WISHLIST XENONAUTS 2
About the Game
Xenonauts is a strategy game in which you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions.Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it!
Please note that the native Mac / Linux versions of the game are still in beta, however older WINE-wrapped "ports" are available and known to be stable whilst development of the native ports is still ongoing.
Key Features
- Ground Combat: Xenonauts delivers tense turn-based combat across realistic, varied and fully-destructible battlefields, against almost fifty different variants of enemy. Missions range from capturing crashed UFOs or alien bases to defending cities (or even Xenonaut facilities) against alien attack. You'll experience the chill of encountering a new alien for the first time and the joys of test-firing a new weapon for the first time. Deeply asymmetric combat keeps the battles interesting - after all, you're fighting intergalactic invaders with 1970's ballistic technology!
- Strategic Management: You will also be managing the defence of the planet, dealing with the invading alien UFOs with your customisable interceptors. You need to balance the needs of your funding nations with your own. Your funds are limited - are you going to spend them on battlefield equipment, more scientists, or expanding your coverage of the planet? Your priorities must be balanced carefully if you are to win the war.
- Research Tree: Xenonauts has an extensive research tree with almost a hundred projects to unlock, each with its own unique description and painted artwork. It slowly reveals the intentions and origins of the invaders, while also unlocking new battlefield equipment, aircraft and vehicles for you to use as you harness alien technology and turn it against them.
- Persistent Soldiers: Soldiers in Xenonauts are persistent from mission to mission, improving their stats and gaining ranks with combat experience - but their deaths are always only a single bad move away. You will grow to care about the brave men and women under your command as they slowly grow from green rookies into hardened veterans, but that only makes it more painful when their heroic tale is cruelly cut short by a burst of plasma fire...
- Detailed, Emergent Simulation: Xenonauts contains no scripted missions, just broad rules setting the pace of the invasion. As such, no game plays out the same twice. If you shoot a Scout UFO down over a polar area, you get a Crash Site mission where you can capture a crashed Scout UFO in an Arctic tileset. Commence a battle at night and you'll be fighting the mission in the darkness with reduced sight range. If your base is attacked, you fight the defence in a perfect replica of your base. A lot of time has gone into weaving the two very different halves of the game together into something that feels both natural and enjoyable.

its good! its like someone remade x-com warts and all.
I understand what they are trying to do. Unfortunately they don't get it right. Too complicated. Too difficult. The graphics are awfull. Hope they get it right the next time.
"Xenonauts" is more than just a strategy game; it’s a powerful tale of humanity’s resilience and the indomitable human spirit that surface when faced with existential threats. The game expertly mixes turn-based combat and resource management, showcasing the determination of your soldiers and the sacrifices they make to defend Earth. The gameplay is tense and strategic, with every mission carrying real stakes. The graphics may be basic, but the isometric style creates an engaging and immersive atmosphere.
The older you get the better it gets.
Why instant negative?
The game does not provide larger fonts in 4k resolution, I cannot read any description texts.
Brings back fond memories of the original X-Com and the horrors of low % grenade throws and being 1 TU off.
Like a modern version of Xcom Ufo enemy unknown-ish
WINMAG
very challenging but fun
fun game, if not a little lacking in the polish department, never got around to beating it but gave it a fair shot. I just see no reason to play it over the firaxis xcom games though, as in my opinion they both have so so much more to offer
Not the UFO Defense remake we deserved, but the one we needed.
Kill the ayy lamos.
Game is fun, good lore, cool animations, gives good nostalgia vibes of an old game, but can sometimes be unbearably unfair even on easy difficulty.
Tex sent me. Download all the Beeple stuff. Add in more fights. Make Jackal Profitable. Profit.
Join now to the Defense of earth!
Meet new exotic and exciting aliens! Kill and capture them for the good of earth!
Capture their technology and reverse engineer it for your own use!
This is a game where you can shoot, beat, gas and interrogate the filthy invaders!
Xenophobia has never been this fun!
Solid 7.5/10
some rough edges but nothing a little digital sand-paper can't fix
Particularly rough features and systems:
Psionics are nutty overpowered, and you do not get to have them. Recommend setting their AP cost to >1000 so they can't be used. If there were a way to consistently defend against them, it'd be fine. But, there isn't. (psionicpowers_gc.xml)
Morale values are incredibly punishing. If you don't enjoy watching Pvt. Signedup Forthis ditch his gun and move 12 spaces away, I recommend reducing the chance for Flee (and Berserk if the idea of someone losing their cool, turning 180° and doming his best friend sucks to you) to 0 or 10 (and bump up Panic to fill the gap). As it stands this system alone is a mission-ender, chain morale failures are 100% going to happen, no matter what (moraleconfig_gc.xml)
Reapers. Reapers. Go get Reaper Rebalance. Just...do it. Some things are not worth emulating and OG Chrysalids are 100% something to avoid making, even if they're nowhere near as tanky. Unfun mechanics top to bottom.
Heavily recommend grabbing "Jackal Armor Profit" from the workshop, because I'll be frank, it's insane to consider that no one wants to fund the organization keeping them safe for some reason. That your operating costs can eclipse income by a factor of 5 in short order, is nonsense.
To that effect, I also recommend snagging "More Alien Materials From Downed UFO" which makes shooting down UFOs that don't leave a crash-site actually give a usable quantity of materials, to supplement income from crashes, landing sites, and bases.
Otherwise, it's a good game, a shame it was abandoned so fast for the sequel once this was a "finished" product
Ironically it is also somewhat more fair than X-COM, as despite the aliens hitting like trucks while you're armed with a pool noodle cannon to start out with, aim percentages aren't lies and seeds aren't static (so far as I can tell)
Incredibly fun and addictive to replay, especially modded!
Fun homage to the classic X-COM UFO defense games, feels very similar including the difficulty, though you can adjust it for your own sake. With mods from the community it is even better and can make it a truly amazing time.
Very much worth it.
Grug see alien. Grug hit alien with big rock. Take alien rock. Alien rock bigger. See bigger alien. Hit bigger alien with bigger rock. Life good.
I hate Aliens. :(
Absolute garbage in comparison to xcom defender, the grenades are woefully restricted.. there's 3 spaces in your craft transport that cannot be used when you take a vehical when there's clearly 3 spaces for 3 units. The alien craft doors remain open only during the aliens turn so your always garanteed to get shot dead if you used up all your time units and there's only two kinds of aliens for the first 3-4 months much less than the varied xcom defender.
The research yields very little that you can manufacture in the first 3 months one of which is the Mig Foxtrot aircraft that only has missiles which doesn't work against the starter scout craft that can sidestep evade missiles and you'll never know the craft your against untill you first engage it, far too late by then.. you can research their guns but not use them unlike defender.
The game also randomly crashes after you finish a ground assault. Frustrating to say the least, it only makes xcom defender truly outshine this even compared to the newer limited games that over simplify and only let you have 1 base globally.
Legitimately Amazing, if you enjoyed XCOM: Enemy Within and want something more complex, and very diffrent, i would highly recomend!
the interceptions far more interactive, and incredibly fun to play. the missions are incredbly fun aswell, the game gives you a very cool feeling, like you truly are saving humanity from an alien invasion. the way the science team acts is very humorus, the ideas the game comes up with, and the justification for the techinology, is very intriguing, once you get ahold of the combat it becomes much easier to beat missions, main advice for new players to either this genre or just this game, is to play on an easier difficutly, i had experience with XCOM: EW and still got my ass handed to me in the begging of the war, its hard to figure out how much expansion you need first time playing.
Very good game, you should buy it for sure!
Would recomend playing the community edition, which is officially in the game, you just need to go to the betas to activate it.
would Highly recomend reading the Iceland Incedent, you should be able to acesses it from the launcher.
PROTECT HUMANITY TODAY..... or whats left of it.
Sorry, the game is just boring. And looks quite ugly. Looks like paper figures and. The music sucks too.
Back to OpenXCom
Fantastic game, much more difficult than xcom EU/Ew xcom 2. With mods this game is a blast! BPL Armory is highly recommended. Its the 70s baby! Elephant rifles and RPGs, Aliens have a bad day!
It's still the best commercially available X-COM clone when played with a bunch of mods, namely with everything made by kabill.
I keep on coming back to this game every few years to see why i can never get past the initial start.
Then I remember why and promptly stop; no real way to make money other then mods, god awful air combat, line of sight issues like not being able to see aliens standing NEXT to your troops and a nonexistent strategic layer.
Its a dull, grind of a game that acts like its a spiritual successor to OG XCOM with none of its charm.
It's basically XCOM. And I love XCOM. It's not XCOM. Nothing is XCOM except XCOM, but this is pretty good. It can get a little repetitive, but that's when you load your whole squad with rocket launchers and go have a blast.
The game is stable on vanilla, I tried using the Community Edition with Lore+ and Armored Assault mods, but the game crashed like every 10 minutes with those. I reinstalled and haven't had a crash in days.
If you never played XCOM before, this is a good place to start your alien defense simulator adventure. You manage everything and it's really like 3 games in 1 where you manage your development, do air battles with UFOs, then go to the crash sites to get tactical on dem AYYYS. It's kinda like Fallout 1&2 and Fallout Tactics. Turn-based, beer&pretzels, save anytime type of deal. Plus they did a really good job with the hardware, I love just looking at them planes and guns.
Great Game
I certainly had a lot of fun playing this game. It was a fun little X-COM style romp where you need to protect your soldiers and stop the alien menace! Create bases across the globe, send out your teams to fight back the aliens, and accrue technology to overcome them!
The only real gripe perhaps is that the playthroughs can be a bit on the long side, and you have to manage 'all' your soldiers individually quite a bit.
play it, addicting then start installing x-divsion mod (which i highly recomended if you wanted more flavor)
yes
Game is Good
If you liked the orginal X-Com you'll love this. It's like being able to play X-com again for the first time.
game makes me big laugh
Very satisfying strategic and tactical gameplay. My only complaint is graphics glitches that occur when opening the Battlescape, such as the terrain texture not loading.
Played more than 77 on another launcher.
This game is ridiculously hard - I have never come anywhere near completeing... in other words 10/10
Very nice game.
Used to play just fine but now crashes every 30 minutes. Basically unplayable. Don't give these folks your money.
Recent reviews are giving a lower rating than I think this game deserve, though there are a few valid complaints I will warn below:
This game is old, and not very well known. IMO graphics look strange, but its not too bad.
The tech is also old, and kinda buggy at times.
The aim chance is annoying, but its not unlike from what I've seen in Xcom 2.
The gameplay is slow and exhasting, I only play a couple missions before quitting since you have to slowly clear each possible position, despite the low chance, since being ambushed early game is certain death for your unreasonably unarmored troops.
However, I find the larger troop deployment and i guess gritty-er feel more compelling than xcom 2. Can't say the same comparing to the first, I haven't played :p
Give it a shot on sale if you are interested, just put on a 2 hour timer to make sure you can refund if you don't like the feel.
it a fun game with mods
Graphics 4/10
Play-ability 7/10
Casual-Play 6/10
Replay Value 7/10
Overall 6/10
Xcom, not Xcom, turn based easy to play, complex to master. Can manifest some bugs :(
Ehhh. Didn't really do it for me.
The game is really good. I've never played the original XCOM so this was a little challenging(but in a good way). Has a couple of bugs but nothing game breaking.
The game is fun! That being said if you are playing it on Windows 10/11 or possibly even slightly older OSs expect this game to crash CONSTANTLY! Tabbing out will almost always be a crash, unless you are willing to power through this consider Xenonaughts 2.
It's just a lousy copy of the original x-com series. Graphics like the 90s, no sound/minimal sound, badly thought out concepts. Don't buy, it is not worth it!
The original XCOM still exists.
Xenonauts isn't that much of an improvement that it would be worth playing this over the original.
I've heard the argument that the UI is more user friendly.... I completely disagree. It's about as ugly and unintuitive.
So if you're patient enough to learn the controls for Xenonauts, just get XCOM UFO DEFENSE instead.
A lot of the problems the original had could be tweaked in the mod OpenXcom, allowing the game to be about as intuitive as Xenonauts.
The graphics aren't updated enough compared to XCOM that it is a direct improvement either. I honestly found it more ugly than the pixelated graphics of it's spiritual predecessor. XCOM's lack of graphical fidelity may have actually worked in it's advantage. It not being crystal clear what something looked like made aliens feel more uncanny and let your imagination sort of fill in the gaps
One of my biggest criticisms is how similar it is. It's like they made a carbon copy. The original XCOM spent a lot of effort through its soundtrack, sound effects, graphics, and design to set a unique atmosphere of paranoia and anxiety which really complimented the gameplay and scenario. You really felt like there was some unnatural threat that you could just barely meet head on.
I'd say that's the thing Xenonauts is lacking the most. It's like they copied XCOM's homework and forgot to inject any of the soul that was in the original.
The only thing gameplay wise that has seen major improvements is the interceptor minigame. Rather than an overly simplistic and predictable minigame like in UFO Defense, the intercept missions actually have you moving around your aircraft manually and actually takes a bit of skill to take full advantage of.
It's just that overall I wish this game tried to stand out on its own. It is too similar to XCOM, playing it just feels like I'm having an objectively worse experience. It makes me wonder why this game even exists to begin with.
Artistically, story wise, setting wise, style wise, they should have done something original. Instead they have a clone of XCOM that while sucessfully capturing many of the same gameplay elements, fails to capture any of the soul the original game had, leaving Xenonauts 1 and 2 as hollow husks that seemingly have no reason to exist.
Like the other reviews say. It's pretty much a old school version of x-com. That said I loved the original x-coms so it's worth my time and money.
If you played with army men as a kid you would like this game.
This game offers a deep and strategic take on the classic alien invasion theme. With its tactical combat and base management, it provides a rewarding challenge for fans of the genre. The blend of strategy, resource management, and combat keeps the gameplay engaging and offers plenty of room for tactical planning. If you enjoy detailed strategy games with a retro feel and complex mechanics, this one is definitely worth a try.
Super buggy. Played for less than an hour before I had to google a fix for not being able to click on anything. Seems like a common problem. There is no excuse for continuing to sell the game in this state over a decade after release.
