experimental game with some really awesome ideas.

serving as a half adaptation of The Shadow Over Innsmouth which creates the scenario and vibe, the game strays from Lovecraft very few times but this is not a real version of any single story of his, more a pastiche of various pieces of his iconography. Townsfolk that look disfigured and are immediately suspicious of you, ever reducing sanity, and a detailed damage and health system are what make up this unique immersive sim.

Run from foes, locking deadbolts as you close doors behind you, shoot a veriety of 30s era weaponry, and solve the mystery you were sent to before the townsfolk can sniff you out and kill you. Return for the finale with J Edgar Hoover and other FBI investigtators as you find the towns malevolent fish-god Dagon.

buggy as hell and not really the most replayable, but if you can get it to work, its a highly interesting look at Lovecrafts fiction.

Call of Sh*thulhu.

I got curious about this game after a "promising" review on youtube. One absolutely awful playthrough later I knew it was all a lie.

Almost everything about Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth is dreadfully bad, starting with the presentation: The grafics are beyond outdated, even for 2006 standards. It barely looks better than the first Half-Life or Call of Duty 1 at absolute best. The color palette consists of black, brown and grey and the visuals are so undetailed and monotonous that they even have a negative effect on the gameplay, making crucial buttons, switches and items barely distinguishable from their surroundings and extremely easy to miss. The sound and voice acting in particular don't do any better. The main character has a whole village of freaks wanting him dead and hunting him mercilessly, yet everytime he says something he sounds as if he didn't have a worry in the world. Said freaks keep shouting the same extremely annoying words over and over again: "Spread out! Search the area!" "Spread out! Search the area!" "Spread out! Search the area!" During the first levels, it will drive you f*ckin' insane.

Gameplaywise CoCDCotE wants to be a stealth game during it's first part, which is basically just one drawn-out clunky chase sequence where this town full of retarded Chthulhu worshippers tries to kill you while you desperately try to escape. Then it suddenly throws a handful of weapons at you and turns into this crappy awkward first person shooter. Once you get your hands on the guns, the game gets much less frustrating, at least for a little while, because now you can finally fight back. What both parts have in common is that the leveldesign is monotonous, clumsy, dated, frustrating and annoying and the game is extremely poor in telling you where to go or what to do. I made it through the majority of it without a guide but with leveldesign like this i'm sure it was just thanks to trial and error and dumb luck, rather than actually knowing what I was doing. In the last couple of levels however, it got so bad that I just couldn't take it anymore and used a walkthrough out of pure impatience to at least finish the game and avoid a rage quit. The final boss fight, which is arguably the worst final boss fight in videogame history, is designed so idioticly cryptic, that I highly doubt anyone could figure this out by themselves. Wanna know more details about the uplifting leveldesign? Wanna know how the game keeps you from going down a certain street until you are supposed to? It places a common enemy at the far end but makes it unkillable, so that it can just shoot you everytime you try to proceed before the game wants to allow it. Wanna know how it tries to force you to play stealthy at some points? Yes, it endlessly spawns enemies, so you waste all your ammo on them until you don't have another choice. And oh yeah, it's one of those games that takes away all your weapons for completely contrived b*llsh*t reasons, not once or twice, but multiple times. How amateurish, lazy and stupid can a leveldesigner be, let alone a whole team of them?

The AI is dumb as dogsh*t, still even on the easiest difficulty the game is tough as nails, but for all the wrong reasons: The enemies always outnumber you and are lurking around every corner, and as soon as they discover you, you can barely get away from them because of the insanely low movement speed and nonexistent sprint-button. Seriously, he's surounded by crazy psychopath killers who want to dismember him alive, but this guy isn't even mildly jogging, he's strolling along as if that dipsh*t is taking a walk in the woods. It will drive you f*ckin' nuts how slow that assh*le is.
The damage you deal as well as the damage you receive are completely inconsistent and random, but you can always count on one thing: The falling damage is ridiculous. As soon as you fall from higher than a meter, the f*ckin idiot twists his ankle and starts limping, slowing you down even further.
The weapon aiming is extremely wonky and relies exclusively on iron sights (no crosshair!), the stealth mechanics are some of the poorest and most simplistic I've ever witnessed in any game and it all is worsened through something the d*mbass developers are seemingly even proud of: The stupid fear system. At certain moments the game wants to simulate things like panic or vertigo by making your vision extremely blurry or shaking it around like crazy. It's especially amazing that it does this mostly during the crucial moments of, say, platforming sections that are already frustrating enough due to the janky controls or firefights with half a dozen enemies that are already hard enough because of the frustrating iron sight aiming. Thanks for this great mechanic you sh*theads, really immersive, great game!

CoCDCotE is already 7 to 8 hours long at least, but all this sh*t mentioned above, all the cheap instadeath-traps, confusing leveldesign, broken stealth- and platforming sections etc. will most likely drag it out to 12 to 15 hours of suffering and torture for you. The icing on the sh*tcake was a huge grafics bug literally in the second last level, that according to forums occurs on basically every recent operating system and grafics card because they simply can't handle those outdated and broken shaders in that particular level and require you to install a fan-made patch to skip that entire sequence XD.

I'm really struggeling to find anything slightly positive about this game and all i can come up with is that CoCDCotE has maybe a handful of decent moments and tense atmosphere here or there, the guns are okayish and it's one of the very few Lovecraft-inspired games about the Cthulhu myth, that's it. The middle part of the game where it focuses almost exclusively on the shooting mechanics without any of the infuriating stealth gameplay and cumbersome annoying puzzles is even a tiny bit of fun, but it's sandwhiched between two long stretches stuffed with plenty of all the awful flaws described above. Now that we are coming close to the conclusion of this review, we only still need to discuss the most important question of all: Since CoCDCotE is supposed to be a horror game, is it actually scary? Well, f*ck no.

Remember that when this came out, we already had games like Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Call of Duty 2, F.E.A.R. and Far Cry, so even by 2006 standards this game is a complete and utter piece of sh*t. It might benefit from multiple playthroughs after you've adapted to all the horrid jank, but even if you are both a nostalgic retro gamer and devoted H. P. Lovecraft admirer I'd rather urge you to stay away. If you can muster up all the generosity of your entire life and put it in this review, you could give CoCDCotE maybe one point for trying, but for me the game-breaking bug towards the end and generally awful last couple of levels were the final nail in the coffin to make this already bad game one of the worst gaming experiences I ever had. It literally ended with a glitch that f*cked up the final cutscene.

As a huge Lovecraft fan, both of his books and games inspired by his work, it’s with great regret that I write this review.

The game had a lot of potential and some genuinely enjoyable moments. Personally, I prefer older games for their nostalgic charm. Unfortunately, it was plagued by numerous issues. While the frequent bugs were frustrating, they were at least manageable—I could usually reset the game, and it would work again. However, one recurring issue was particularly egregious: pressing "Esc" would cause the game to crash. If you hadn’t saved your progress, it would all be lost in an instant.

Even with these setbacks, I pushed through and managed to enjoy the experience for a while. But now, I’ve encountered a specific stage where a game-breaking glitch makes it impossible to progress.

This isn’t about the cost; the game was under 2 euros, so it’s not a financial loss. The real frustration comes from the time I invested—over 9 hours—only to be left with a bitter taste when I couldn’t finish it.

I’m not the kind of reviewer who tells people not to buy a game just because I didn’t enjoy it. Every game has it's enjoyer. However, I find it hard to recommend a game that is literally unfinishable, regardless of the price.

The game looks engaging, but I can not make it run. It crashes 10 minutes into the game, always at the same place. Reading the Internet did not reveal working hacks.

Classic masterpiece. Finished the game on the Steam Deck (runs great) with no issues, just some bugs (no patches just base game). Game is frustrating at times but it's worth it. A must play for HPL fans. 8\10

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A Masterclass in Lovecraftian Horror

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is one of the most immersive and chilling adaptations of Lovecraft’s works to ever grace the gaming world. Released in 2005, it remains a cult classic for its atmosphere, storytelling, and sheer dedication to capturing the spirit of cosmic horror.

What Makes It Exceptional:

Atmosphere to Die For: From the oppressive streets of Innsmouth to the otherworldly horrors beyond human comprehension, this game nails the creeping dread of Lovecraftian horror. The sound design and lighting are masterful, plunging you into a world where you’re constantly looking over your shoulder.
Unique Mechanics: Forget hand-holding. This game drops you into its world with minimal HUD, letting you truly feel the paranoia and vulnerability of its protagonist, Jack Walters. The sanity system is a standout, with visual and auditory distortions that make you question reality.
Faithful to the Source Material: Fans of Lovecraft’s works will find so many Easter eggs and references here. The game captures the essence of stories like The Shadow Over Innsmouth while weaving in its own gripping narrative.
Tense Gameplay: Combining survival horror, stealth, and puzzle-solving, the gameplay keeps you engaged and on edge. Moments like the iconic escape from the Gilman Hotel are some of the most pulse-pounding in gaming history.
A Few Rough Edges: Sure, the game isn’t without flaws—its age shows in the clunky combat and occasional bugs—but these are small prices to pay for such a richly atmospheric experience.

If you’re a fan of Lovecraft, survival horror, or just love games that demand your attention and immerse you in their world, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is an absolute must-play. It’s a love letter to cosmic horror that deserves every ounce of praise it gets.

I was mildly enjoying this game until I ran into a point early on in the game that consistently crashes. I tried a few recommended fixes that didn't work in my case. I found really convoluted solutions that sound a little sketchy and I'm hesitant to implement.

I slightly recommend this game, because of its age.

The base game, unfortunately, was quite buggy, requiring the unofficial patch to play smoothly.
The game design choices sometimes led to intense frustration.
The controls felt outdated and hindered the experience.
Despite these issues, the atmosphere was terrific. And, I wish there was more game like this one.
So, if you really wish to play and have enough sanity and patience, you should try...

I also think that 800x600 looks more atmospheric than 1920x1080.(Even though ı did play most of it at 1920x1080)

Pretty good, if you can stomach that old-game jankiness. Personally, I thrive on it.

Just google and download the absolutely CRITICAL patch to fix game breaking bugs .

Gameplay: 7/10 - a fun shooter with long stretches of walking.
Story: 7/10 - what can I say, one of the rare games based on the Cthulhu-mythos.
Graphics: ... - They have not aged well but that's to be expected.

While sometimes an absolute slog to get through, this is certainly an old FPS worth revisiting if you don't mind getting around the jank and using a guide along the way. The combat is shallow but fun, the stealth is the same. Idk, just good schlock i guess. Got stuck several times and a gamebreaking bug locked my progress during the final bossfight. 10/19

To play this game on a modern computer you will need:

1) A copy of the retail executable (CoCMainWin32.exe), and
2) The community patch (DCoTEPatch) by Sucklead, and
3) Widescreen fix by ThirteenAG

Links to all three can be found on PCGamingWiki. Install the widescreen fix, replace the CoCMainWin32 executable installed by steam with the retail version, then use DCoTEPatch on the retail executable to, at the very least, "Fix FPS to 60" and "Modify blue light shader", but I also recommend "Modify skybox shader", skip legal and startup videos, "Always show Extended End Movie", and adjusting your FOV to whatever you find comfortable. At the very end of the game, after defeating the final boss, I strongly recommend using the patcher to modify your "Walking Speed" to 999.9 (trust me, Running Speed does nothing). Don't bother with "Double time for escape sequence", it won't help unless you also boost your speed.

As for the game itself: it's fun! I didn't find it scary, but the gameplay is good and the story is excellent. Most of the bad reviews are due to it being an old game that doesn't run well on modern computers, but I had no problems once it was patched. My only complaint is the checkpoint-save system, and then only because the devs, in their infinite wisdom, decided it was a good idea to place a checkpoint before a loooooong section of walking/dialog/unskippable cutscenes/all of the above, followed by 1) an intense action sequence that you will likely fail on your first (and maybe several) attempt(s), and/or 2) an area of uncertain forward direction that you'll need to navigate by trial-and-error-and-failure until you finally master the route. I get that it eliminates save-scumming, but jesus h christ put the checkpoint after the loooooong section of walking/dialog/unskippable cutscenes/all of the above, not before it you sadists. Sometimes I wonder if devs bother to play their own games.

Lastly, don't hesitate to refer to a walkthrough when you feel stuck. The game is solvable without a guide, but due to the stupid checkpoint system it's a waste of your time to try. IDK maybe some people think it's fun to repeat the same 10 minute section over and over and over until you figure it out on your own, but I do not.

2 minute TLDR:

Never beat this one but its pedigree is legendary on Youtube. A random Bethesda game that happened in the 00's, kinda janky and weird, but has a charmingly creepy atmosphere. I would suggest it for that alone, however the game may be tough to run, so do your research before buying/grab on sale.

Avoid this buggy broken mess. Going in, from others' reviews and comments, I knew I would have to patch a few things - no big deal, done it dozens of times and never failed before. Despite a bugfix patch updated earlier this year, many gamebreaking bugs persist and this is one of the few games I have to abandon halfway due to one. If you really need to get your supernatural, horror, or H.P. Lovecraft fix, many have commented that the GOG version doesn't have the same issues. There is also Call of Call of Cthulhu (2018) that is phenomenal in its own right.

From what I was able to experience, the game does story, lore, atmosphere, and pacing well. It doesn't hold your hand and it doesn't hold back - this might filter some, but it should be easy enough for everyone else. That said, I cannot recommend the Steam version.

If you play this you'll probably experience very early-game crashes that prevent you from progressing through the game. Who actually thought that Bethesda could publish a game that wasn't a buggy mess? I for one had to find a fix to this on Internet Archive and completely replace this game for that in my steam folder. If you can do that, you'll likely have a fairly descent game with a linear story progression, however I would not recommend buying this from Steam.
