Описание

From PRINCE OF PERSIA creator Jordan Mechner, the original side-scrolling karate classic comes to Steam with art by Jeff Matsuda (The Batman) and music by Grammy-winning composer Christopher Tin (CIVILIZATION IV).

Set in a feudal universe, your mission is to rescue your beloved, Princess Mariko from the evil warlord Akuma who locked her in his castle fortress hidden in the mountain. A unique classic love story that will take you in the arcade games golden age.

Karateka charms with its graphics inspired by Ukiyo-e print art, its love story and its Feudal atmosphere. Let the in-game cinematics take you right away to the Japan we've heard in history books.

Be prepared for the battle. Akuma’s henchmen will do everything they can to stop you in a demanding fight to defeat. But threats can also come from the environment itself or from the air, as the warlord may decide to send his hawks on your way.

Who’s going to win Mariko’s love? The fearsome Brute, the noble Monk or her brave and true love? Three endings await you with those three suitors.
All of them will challenge the most advanced and skilled players to unlock more difficult achievements and endings.

Karateka is an ancient game from 2012. It's a whopping 12 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for the typical features of modern gaming PCs, hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on contemporary machines. The game looks and feels dated. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an old game. This seems to have be lingering on Steam with an inflated price to try profit from abandonware.

The funny thing about this is it's a remake of an ancient Apple II/Commodore 64 game of the same name from 1984... so this is a 12 year old remake of a 40 year old game that was never that popular anyway, because everyone just played International Karate Plus instead because it was better. Like the combat in Karateka was never great... always really clunky and not suited to the devices of the time. Making it a crappy console game in the remake only made things worse.

On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers.

The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the 1990s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with.

PC gamers will be insulted by the presence of console peasant children's toy controller prompts, despite this being on PC. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're developing for.

Because this is designed for consoles, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the inferior console gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the console-centric developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for consoles forces upon a game. Once more, console peasants have made gaming worse for everyone.

These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.

So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?

Karateka is relatively expensive for an abandonware nostalgia gouge, at $4 USD, and it's not worth it. The game is just too old, hasn't been modernised. And as the old saying goes, you can't go home again. Even when it was new, this was never a triple-A game. This is the kind of game that went almost directly from the warehouse into the cheap bargain bins at the front of the shop. Now, on Steam, without any modernisation? This is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid prod

I love this game. In true Jordan Mechner style it's cinematic and emotionally impactful despite using a very light hand with storytelling. Mechanics are fun and quick to grasp. I love the tension of bowing to a foe, having them taunt me, I bow again, and on rare occasions they will relent and bow back. It's rare that a game makes such a strong first impression on me. I wish I bought this a long time ago.

For current discounted price, felt like steal, only thing can buy with this amount is a can of soda...
The game is better than current AAA game in 2024.

you could use Re-shade make the graphic event better by adding FXAA SMAA and Some HDR light and shadow effect

I played the original Karateka on several platforms growing up. I feel like the original was very underrated, as the combat has more depth than it may seem on the surface. Timing and spacing are critical elements in the original, as well as which attack you choose can make the difference between eating a counter or not.

This remake had so much potential and does a lot of things really well. Sadly, the combat is not one of them. This essentially boils down to QTEs on defense, and the camera angle changes to tell you when it's okay to attack. Enemies are somewhat varied visually, but their attack patterns are largely the same. There isn't much to learn from fight to fight, and the health pool for the monk & brute are so large that you don't need to be very good to win. I found myself getting beaten up and still winning.

I feel like there is some replay value to try to go deathless and hitless, but once you have the defensive timings down that should be it. I mean you could try to speedrun it, but the game inserts so many natural delays that I think you can only get it down so quickly.

Most frustrating is that the game lacks even basic elements of movement. This was essentially like a 2D fighter ahead of its time in 1984, but the 2012 version plays like a flash game.

It's only $4, so it's not like I feel cheated for the money. But it's not worth it unless you love the original...and in the case, buy The Making of Karateka first and enjoy the original.

One of the old cool games for the Commador 64.
This is the same game but, with of course, much better graphics than back in the Mid-80's. CRT monitors. Very pixelated indeed but was so cool for it's time.
Levels are or seem to me, been a long time certainly due to technology improvements, more challenging.
Have not made it to the end yet but not addicted as before to make the conquest, but if the same ending, I already know what it is to expect .

Karateka is such a great remake of the original game that came out in 1984 for Apple II by Jordan Mechner. The guy is also responsible for the original Prince of Persia which is renowned for its rotoscope animations. The same applies to the original Karateka as well. Using rotoscope animations in a game back in 1984 was a revolutionary success, but how does that reflect on the gameplay itself? I’m personally not a big fan of the original Karateka because it was quite slow, and its controls were not that great. It was also very punishing, leaving no room for errors, but what games were truly fair back then? I ended up beating the NES version after months of practice and figuring out how to get past the trap gate, but I wasn’t satisfied with my victory for reasons I don’t remember why. I probably ended up being way too frustrated due to the unfair artificial difficulty to be satisfied with my accomplishment. Also, the game traumatized me with its soundtrack back then and my inner child still shivers whenever I boot it up.

The remake, however, is exactly what I could ask for. I’m a sucker for QTEs and this game revolves around very well-designed quick-time events. Instead of pushing a button to get into the fighting stance, the character automatically takes it upon encounter and leaves you to deal with the enemy. You have to block the attacks the enemies throw at you and then hit them hard with everything you have until they are defeated. Unlike the original game, you can use your Chi Attack to stun them for a brief period to perform a special attack and replenish your health with flowers you come across. Upon failure, a new suitor, who replaces the previous character, is shown with their motives to rescue the lovely Mariko. There are 3 characters in total: Mariko’s True Love, Righteous Monk, and Loyal Brute. Mariko’s True Love has the lowest HP point and attack output among them and if you’re not careful, Monk replaces him pretty quickly. It’s not easy to fail while playing as the Monk since he hits hard and has more HP than the original protagonist, but if you somehow fail, Loyal Brute takes his place who’s literally a tank which means nearly indestructible.

Mariko, however, won’t be satisfied if she’s rescued by the Monk or the Brute since she longs for her True Love, but getting to the Akuma as him is not an easy feat. The game’s production value is extremely well since everything is supported by several cutscenes despite its length which is around 30 minutes. You also face many bosses on your way to Akuma and their introductions get you in the mood for vengeance. The character designs are also very good, and the sound design is where the game shines best because you are kind of forced to listen to the sound cues to know when to block or attack. Achievements are also fair, but there are some hardcore ones such as getting to Akuma without getting hit by his minions and that means surviving 42 enemies without getting a single hit. The game’s pretty short and pretty easy to learn, therefore; it shouldn’t take you long to get all of them, nonetheless. It took me 3 hours to get a 100% completion rate. Oh, and, the infamous hawk is in the game too, but not as annoying as it was in the original title.

TL;DR

A wonderful remake of the original Karateka that revolves around very well-designed quick-time events with 3 protagonists. With its cinematic cutscenes, Karateka will get you in the mood for vengeance once again!

Another fantastic remake. I still haven't managed to win with the first character yet but I am working on it. The hawk seems to give me the most difficulty defending against so far. The game play is simple yet rewarding.
