great story and mechanics
Awesome adventure game, interesting story and very tense thriller atmosphere! Also some cool gameplay mechanics like short and long term memory, and you can play multiple characters. Difficulty is decent. Love the style too.
I am absolutely ride or die for Wadjet Eye games, but that's not to say every title they've been involved with has been stellar. Case in point: xii games' Resonance. A pretty mediocre point & click game with a generic story, flat characters and mediocre puzzles. But! Even when Wadjet helps to put out a bad one, it still manages to be interesting.
Resonance is bad because it is over ambitious. Like a corgi trying to do a backflip, its failure was inevitable, but it's hard not to find the results endearing, even if they're disastrous. There are some genuinely interesting ideas here, chief among them the memory system. While playing, you gain access to "short term memories" and "long term memories". The long term ones are important events or pieces of information you witness, whereas the short term is where you can store points of interest are your character to then use in dialogue puzzles. It's a confusing system to explain and an even more confusing one to actually use, but it's a promising idea. Unfortunately, after the first couple of hours the short term essentially never comes up again whereas your long term memory and item inventories become so bloated that it's borderline impossible to know what to do without a guide. I do think there's merit to the idea, trying to marry the guidance of a limited inventory and the player freedom of a text parser, but in the end it's a clunky, finnicky system that can only deliver obvious puzzles or cryptic roadblocks.
Resonance is narratively ambitious too, with not one, not two, not five, but four whole player characters (ish). The prologue section probably uses them best, as it's there they're all separate and allowed to display some individual traits, but for the middle third of the game, they're all together. You can swap between them at will, and they each (in theory) have different abilities and problem solving skills. Once again, there's a dissonance between the freedom allowed by the system and the specifity of the answers the game wants. Any character can hold almost any item and go almost anywhere, so get ready for a whole lot of annoying, clunky inventory management. It's not that long before they're once again split up, and it's pretty obvious the burden of writing and programming interactions for four whole player characters became too great a workload and it had to be simplified. Again, I admire the ambition, but it's an inevitable result.
While Resonance is undoubtedly a failure on several fronts, it's at least an interesting failure. It's not even close to the upper echelons of Wadjet's catalogue, but it contains within some mechanical nuggets that should be revisited and brought to their full potential someday.

Can't recommend this one, couldn't keep playing even though I wanted to like it.
It doesn't hold up to the other wadjet eye games in terms of how naturally the story unfolds or how the puzzles/gameplay feel. The story and characters are interesting, but there are too many puzzles that really weren't needed or were obnoxious to solve without a walkthrough, also including some dialogue that was just painful to read and listen to because it was obviously filler material, too much backtracking to get something into short term memory (looking at you, janitor and your damn wrench) to then use in a later area. This game has too large a focus on arbitrary puzzle solving instead of letting the puzzles work for and be a part of the story. It could've used some (more) playtesting before being released, maybe.
This was a fun game. It adds a few new dynamics to a retro point-and-click adventure. Instead of collecting things and talking about certain topics to solve mysteries, this game implements a long-term memory (LTM) and short-term memory (STM) where experiences and happenings can be referenced during dialogue and puzzles, as well as standard inventory. You also eventually control and switch between four separate characters with their own memories, inventories and specialties. While this is a strength of the game, it's also a bit of a weakness, but I'll get to that later.
The story is pretty good. Scifi mystery adventure with likeable characters and a couple thrilling parts to it. There are some interesting revealings and twists. Ultimately, it has two endings, both of which can be achieved at endgame. Unfortunately, not a whole lot else you do or say changes anything.
So, like I said, the multi-character and memory dynamics are great and all, but I feel like it made the game a little more complex than it needed to be. I got somewhat overwhelmed when four characters I wasn't really familiar with were suddenly thrust into my control and I had four objectives to complete, each with their own puzzles meant for specific characters. However, I'm sure some people like challenges of that nature. Maybe I just wasn't as into the game as I wanted to be.
Regardless, if you like retro point-and-click adventure games, both old and modern, you'll have fun with this one.
