I guess I'm not fond of spiderweb games.
I normally don't enjoy open world games, but this one was fun to explore.
:)
Fascinating title, this one is. A blend if you will, of Icewind Dale and Fallout 1. With a dash of something even more old-school - the Ultima series.
Icewind Dale because it's fantasy, but much more desolate than you're used to, and with a heavy emphasis on combat and dungeon raiding. Most of all quests and situations in this game are solved through combat. A couple through theft, and some through collecting items or following a linear dialogue tree. But none through negotiations - except for the fact that you can either choose to complete the quest and the combat associated with it, or leave the baddie be. You don't actually need to complete more than a handful of quests to beat the game technically speaking.
Fallout 1 because it's the exact same premise. You're thrust from your comfort zone into a completely unknown world, where every expectation is subverted with something inherently lower quality or more dangerous. And you're left to do what you want right from the opening minute. The focus is on exploration, and it's an equally fascinating realm to Fallout's one, with secrets and encounters hidden in every nook and cranny, items to pilfer, quests to solve at every corner and horrific monsters to be ambushed by.
I remember playing the shareware version of the original Exile: Escape from the Pit on my mum's Mac, this must have been in 1997 or so. I was never good enough to get far in it as a kid, but there was something about it that stimulated my interest and imagination. The mechanics in that version were pretty hardcore - severe encumbrance penalties, getting dumbfounded, diseases, and so on. And you best not get any of your characters killed as their revival will cost a small fortune. I'm glad Spiderweb Software toned it down for this remake. It's a better game for it. But if you're an experienced RPG player - do play it on hard. The combat system is fairly simple and you will quickly master it to the point where fighting won't be a challenge for you on the easier difficulties. You can always dial the difficulty down for the odd battle if you really do become stuck somewhere.
Anyway, I got the first Fallout a year or two later and it quickly became my favourite RPG. Now that I played through this remake, I know why. Because this game and Fallout - well they're basically apples from one and the same tree.
And finally there's the Ultima influence. This is related to the game's art style, its combat system, and its heavy reliance on text descriptions. The writing I should note in this game - is superb. The Ultima games of course were also I believe the earliest open-world RPGs and in this sense are the progenitor of both Avernum and Fallout.
Altogether Avernum is a unique package backed by expertly crafted world-building and a wondrous setting. That said I don't feel like it's an all-time classic. There are a number of things which aren't to my preference. Too much going back and forth and leaving dungeons half-completed only to have to return later as difficulties and challenge ratings even within the same dungeons or across different floors can vary quite widely. The less than ideally balanced combat system and spell tree. The story not hooking you emotionally.. or really being there 95% of the time. Wooden NPCs whose character development is non-existent. And a lot of instances which break immersion - such as being able to pilfer a dragon's treasure only for it to carry on interacting with you as if nothing has changed. I guess you're always aware that it's ultimately a remake of a remake of a game from 1995. But it's still a great time. And a great game.
Gaming peaked here
great game but extreme issues with display scaling and bugs or any resolution higher than super low res. impossible to play on a modern compputer.
Loved these games since I was a kid playing EXILE III Ruined world
This is a simple, single player, story focused, turn based RPG. The graphics are simple and utilitarian. The story is detailed and interesting if you pay attention. Take the time to read the quests and meander through the world. Choices matter in inconspicuous ways. Good luck.
Immersive story, based off an old classic
An excelent RPG classic with good story. Intuitive gameplay, well thought out magic and combat system. No excess of loot and items - and only a handfull of epic items. Enjoyed all three END quests, each od them a different challange. For my liking a 9/10 RPG game. Dont mind the graphics, remember its fantasy, so imagine and use your creative mind ;)
nope, don't waste your time on this
Avernum: Escape From the Pit is an okay video game.
The gist is four idiots got arrested by the totalitarian fantasy empire that basically controls the entire planet, and instead of being executed for putting something that can't be recycled into the recycling bin or whatever nonsense crime they got caught doing they get sent through a magic portal to the PRISON CAVES to presumably die. In the underground the people sent down have founded their own kingdom hanging on by its fingernails, running on scavenged equipment and the occasional pity shipment of supplies from the surface world. Once you crawl of the obligatory tutorial zone you're let loose into the caves to explore as you wish.
The game plays with you looking down at your adventurer squad as you click to make them move around, arrow keys work as well but the mouse is better. Combat is turn based, with your squad going in the order that you've arranged them, but their own turn order among the enemies you fight is determined by their dexterity. There's a zoomed out overworld perspective where you roam the caves, finding towns, digging up treasure, picking fights, and hiking to the next dungeon, cave, or fort full of jerks you need to kill. There's quests that you get in all the ways you'd expect, talking to people and asking if they need stuff done, and they actually have some decent range in what you do in them, it's not all "KILL TEN BOARS IDIOT"
There's some good and some bad with Avernum. A lot of the good involves how much of the world is open to explore so early, while there's the obvious issue of pushing too far in one direction will kill you with enemies you are not ready at all to fight yet, you can still go there. There's also how major quests are connected to each other, you can be doing something, whether that's finding a specific item or killing some clown and be progressing another quest entirely that you don't even know about yet. I also really liked that to get the best version of spells, you didn't just need to go buy training for it in a town somewhere but actually needed to explore the world to find tomes to read, it provides a MUCH better and tangible reward than just another treasure chest full of junk. Then we get the bad. There's like no music in the game beside the main menu, no combat music at all, which really hurts considering how much combat there is. Speaking of combat I'm not a fan of how they handle enemy resistances, I'd hit something and it seems like every single enemy has something in the area of 75% resistances for every damage type, and all it does is make combat a slog unless you're so strong that you annihilate it in one shot. Enemy variety near the end isn't that great and fights can end up starting to feel kind of samey. I don't like how you can get screwed out of the ending if you're missing an item, and if you don't have a save before the point of no return you're out of luck.
Overall, I give Avernum: Escape from the Pit a tentative recommendation, I liked it, but it was starting to drag near the end, and I know that this isn't the kind of game for everyone.
Based on Exile: Escape from the Pit, lots of changes to core gameplay, and they ruin some of the fun for little to no reason. Some artwork is pretty, but most of it is black and white sketches looking like they're from microsoft paint. I get this was made in 2002 and then slightly updated in 2012, but the dev team has to have been a single college student. I'm not buying the later games, but since I enjoyed the original 1995 game so much, I'm not refunding this. If you think you'd like this, do yourself a favour and play Exile from an abandonware site instead.
