Reminds me of Civ games. What will the next turn bring? Got to click 'next turn' in order to find out. Becomes kind of addictive. Hours may fly by.
This game is broken on modern PCs and you shouldn't buy it.
Shame on the devs for continuing to sell it.
Well, after more than 2000 hours in Stellaris I came back to this gem, and it is so relaxing. Still deep yet not that complex or even complicated.
The diplomacy seems to be a bit off, but probably there is a mod to improve that.
Space not actually endless, so the game lied but I don't want my time or money back. I suppose that means I had fun anyway, imagine that.
TL;DR:
It’s a black hole of a 4X strategy game: dense, absorbing, and mercilessly slow. While its galaxy of possibilities shines bright, its flaws often pull you into a void of tedium. Average gamer? Not recommended for the average RTS gamer.
Endless Space – A Real Razor Review
The Good: Depth, Options, and Gorgeous Stars
Endless Space is what happens when someone decides to cram every 4X dream into one game and then balance it surprisingly well. The tech tree alone feels like a buffet, offering four sprawling branches—each packed with dilemmas about what you’ll neglect while pursuing your empire's destiny. Whether you’re terraforming poisoned desert worlds or designing custom battleships, the sheer number of choices is impressive.
The galaxy generation options are equally flexible: pick a race, create your own, tweak win conditions, or just build a sprawling cosmic playground. And let’s not ignore how visually stunning the game is. The sleek interface and star systems make it a treat for anyone who’s ever dreamed of dominating the cosmos.
Combat: Fast, Smart, but Impersonal
Fleet battles in Endless Space are quick, clocking in at two minutes per fight, and strategically hands-off. You issue three broad commands (long-range, mid-range, and close-range tactics) and watch the carnage unfold in cinematic glory. Some players will love this streamlined approach; others will feel like they’re playing Pokemon TCG in space. "I’ll play my engineering card and counter your sabotage card while pew-pew cutscenes play in the background." It’s clever and keeps multiplayer fast, but don’t expect the personal, white-knuckle engagements of other RTS or 4X titles.
The Flaws: Tiny Text, Tedium, and Tech-Teetering
For all its polish, Endless Space is far from perfect. Let’s start with the UI design, which feels like it was made for 2012 monitors and hasn’t aged well. Modern gaming setups render the interface so small it’s nearly unreadable, making basic navigation frustrating. It’s not just a minor oversight—it’s a glaring flaw that the developers admit but refuse to fix.
Then there’s the mid- and late-game drag, a classic 4X pitfall. Endless Space may start as a thrilling race for expansion and tech superiority, but once the galaxy is half-conquered, it devolves into a slog. You’ll queue up improvements, end turns, and wait for fleets to shuffle across the map. Micromanaging becomes overwhelming, while automating makes the game feel hands-off to a fault. The result? A lot of clicking “end turn” and waiting for something meaningful to happen.
Tech Extremes and the Cruel Galaxy
The tech system, though robust, can punish players in brutal ways. One wrong branch of research, and your empire is toast when an AI with counter-tech steamrolls your fleets. There’s no way to recover—you either dominate or get wrecked. Fleet sizes are also strangled by arbitrary limits, forcing one-dimensional tactics. Need to invade a system? Hope you enjoy watching fleets fight one at a time while reinforcements queue up for the next 1v1. It’s painfully slow and far from epic.
Endless Tedium
At its worst, Endless Space reduces itself to a waiting game. Ships build. Planets improve. Fleets crawl to their destinations. Rinse and repeat. If you don’t micromanage (and let’s be honest, nobody loves micromanaging 300 turns deep), there’s little to do but skip turns and wait for the next battle.
Verdict: A Brilliant but Flawed 4X
Endless Space is a masterpiece of ambition and balance, but it struggles with some glaring issues. For hardcore 4X fans who can overlook the tedious late game and punishing tech extremes, this is a galaxy worth exploring. For casual players or those who value pacing over density, steer clear. It’s smart, polished, and undeniably addictive, but its flaws weigh it down like a black hole in the center of an otherwise dazzling galaxy.
Score: 6/10
Great for masochistic strategy fans. Not so great for anyone who values comfort or modern UI standards. Average gamer? No, not recommended.
Spaceship go brrrr
This game is terribly boring. There is no real gameplay apart from clicking buttons so certain numbers go up slightly faster. I love space strategy games, this barely qualifies as a game because I don't think I had a lick of fun over my entire gameplay. I'll have to retry Endless Space 2 but considering I've got less than 80 hours on that as well, it's likely the same boring trash. I don't even need to name Stellaris the bloated $500+ dlc Paradox wasteland, try Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. It's more real time, but wow is it ever leagues above and has endless mods.
I came to this game after playing ES2 extensively. I would say there are some great things here and they are not the same game. I can clearly see where they were going and the changes they did game to game. I would even say ES2 is better. Even so, there are hours of space genocide to be enjoyed here and it seems that even though there are overall less features than the second game, the galaxy generation options seem better and more varied.
In a lot of ways ENDLESS™ Space is a perfect space sim, at least on paper it's the Master of Orion game we always wanted but never got. But there's one glaring problem. And it's a huge one. Or should I say, a tiny one.
See, the developers of the game didn't bother developing the game for modern PCs even after remastering it into this "Definitive Edition". The UI is impossible small, it's tiny, you simply can't read or use the UI if you own a modern gaming PC. It's unplayable.
The developers acknowledge this problem, they admit they screwed up. But the refuse to fix the problem.
Apparently it's "too hard" to fix basic UI issues with a game. And I guess, removing a known defective game from Steam is also "too hard", because they want your money for a game that's obsolete, superseded by Endless Space 2, and will never be fixed or maintained. This is unethical.
Because of that, it's "too hard" for me to recommend this old and busted game to gamers. Spend your money elsewhere. This is unplayable on modern PCs.
I see your face in ENDLESS Space.
yes
i really wish steam allowed for a "mixed" or "mid"(e.g., not bad) score you could give, since after playing on the lowest settings to the highest ones, iv'e seen at least what 80% of the game has to offer. not a bad thing, since i got it on sale for like, 2.50, so it's not too terrible. 36hrs fro the price of a convenience store snack aint bad, i just know i would have been disappointed if i spent, say, $20 or more on this.
currently the only reasons i would have to come back to this game would be twofold.
1: the custom factions i set up. figured out how to change some settings and give myself unlimited traits for lore accurate factions from other properties. really wanna see how that goes.
2: the main mods for this game, and the only one i managed to get working without qualification.
it's a mod called imperium aeterna, and i must say, it's an amazing overhaul mod
so as it goes, it's baby's first 4x, again not a bad thing. XCOM: EW is baby's first turn based and i loved the hell out of it
but really after playing what i have, i can't recommend it to anyone when it's not on sale.
giving it a thumbs up because i can tell that this game is a labor of love, thank you amplitude studios for this amazing work
however, i do also understand now why most people play the sequel instead, even if it's like, more than 8 times the cost
Game breaking bugs ... portals you can´t build and need to raze planets, fleet repairs doesn´t work, couse the game thinks a planet inside my teritory isn´t mine, fleets disapear on retreat ... sad
It's a 4X game that heavily draws inspiration from resource types and weights in other 4X games. The core gameplay should be familiar to 4X fans and possible to digest over time for players who don't have that level of familiarity...albeit from learning via trial and error. Probably a lot of error. Everyone needs to start somewhere.
The biggest unique area for Endless Space is in the fleet management system, where you can use your researched technology to create completely unique ships which engage in detailed simulated battles where you can even apply tactical gambits in a bit to win a complex Rock/Paper/Scissors variant with interesting weights and consequences. The entire system feels fun and novel if a bit clunky. I enjoyed both the ship design and the interstellar battles.
As a whole it carries the theme of space well. This game is much more like "Civilization in space but with a weird tech tree and a complex fleet battle system" than a competitor for Stellaris. Definitely do not come into this game expecting anything resembling Stellaris, if for whatever reason you've played Stellaris and know nothing about Endless Space.
It's a good game, though, if you give it a chance. The different species are unique and creative, with intriguing advantages and disadvantages.
It is a old game, i personally think endless space 2 is a better game in every aspect.
Complex and involving. Top class XXXX
something is wrong with the game.. it starts with the same setup.. not like when I first started playing it.. it is not a random start anymore. the same planets and characters are generated each time.. very frustrating.. I have reloaded the game.. but the same thing is happening to other games in steam too.
id trade 40,000 h*man so*ls for 1 more season of H O T D right now without blinking
Probably the least fun strategy game ive ever played. I liked endless legend and humankind but this was just so boring
This is a strange mixture of Sins of a Solar Empire and Civilization in space. It's fun, relatively unique, and the atmosphere is enjoyable. Unfortunately, the game is very repetitive very quickly because there are relatively few things to because each research only give you one or two improvements to build on your planets. And the combat only gives you a few customization options, but it really comes down to throwing the most weapons your ships and make a few adaptions on the enemy layout. Overall it's fun, but limited replayability.
