not horrendous, but i found it pretty dull - life's too short (and my game library far too large) to waste time on dull games. just didn't grab me or hold my interest.
its an old game to be playing in 2023. but i enjoyed it nonetheless.
what i like:
-the theme, mata hari is a mysterious yet colorful character. Fascinating historical background and intriguing storyline.
-game developers were able to weave historical events of that era into the story
-visuals are good
-play well on my rig on Windows 10. No issues.
what i don't like
-the traveling and avoid-the-spies minigame gets irrating after a while. Often, you need to travel to another city just to carry out one conversation. Duh...
-the dancing mini game...some of them are impossible with a mouse
-likewise for some of the avoid-the-spies mini-game...5 spies waiting to catch you ...seriously. Sure, you can skip the mini games at expense of gaining points.
overall, its not a bad game, I will recommend it for history buffs who wants to know about Mata Hari.
Got the game on sale and I really enjoy it! Nice Point & Click game!
Now I wanna be as cool as Mata Hari with all the seducing skills!
In the past, point-and-click adventure games used to be my favorite genre. However, most of the games I played didn't have a translation to my mother's tongue, preventing me from fully enjoying the experience. Nevertheless, I have always appreciated the gratifying puzzle-solving mechanics.
As time passed, there was a natural transition from 2D to 3D graphics, accompanied by other technological advancements. Consequently, many other titles were introduced, including this particular release. The game's story is intriguing as it is based on real events from the past. The question remains: Is it a good at all?
The story follows a linear path but is divided into different segments or chapters, each separated by a significant leap in time. The graphics, considering the time of release, are satisfactory. The sound effects and music are also adequate, and I have no major complaints in that regard. The voice acting, although a bit cheesy, doesn't bother me personally. In terms of gameplay, the developers attempted to combine various mechanics. It's not solely a point-and-click adventure game; there are also puzzles to solve and even rhythm segments, exploring Mata Hari's background as a dancer. Additionally, there is a points system that may have some impact on the outcome.
To be completely honest, the execution of the game falls short of greatness. I find it difficult to relate to any of the characters, and most of the time, I found myself yawning instead of genuinely enjoying the experience. If given the choice, I would provide a neutral assessment of this game. However, since that option is not available, I have to settle for a negative review.
Different from most adventure games but quite interesting to learn the story.
This is an avarage game... the story of Mata makes it a liitle bit fun to play but other than that you would need special motivation. During the game to travel around the cities you have visit the train station again and again and it makes things even more boring. A map or quick travel would be great. Puzzles are few and easy... There are also some bugs and game stucks without you realizing which would end up you travelling back and forth without an outcome. Naaah
Design, setting, story are all engaging. The "performance" puzzles are mechanically weird sometimes, but a small price to pay for an otherwise immersive character experience.
Very good game! I don't understand the mixed reviews. The puzzles are a bit easy, but it is to be expected. You are a spy, which means you must use seduction, subterfuge and the right words to succeed, not cary around an entire inventory of household items in your pocket to resolve situations MacGyver-style. The design is excellent, courtesy of veteran game designers Hal Barwood and Noah Falstein. And for once, I didn't need to use a walktrough to finish an adventure. Some of the minigames repeat themselves, but I found them enjoyable. Overall a very good game, and worked fine on Win 10.

TLDR: Slow to unfold. Lacks early solid plot hooks. Feels like being a tourist. Would rather watch than deal with the puzzles and the point and click interface to be honest.
this is an point and click game with good voice acting, intriguing story, easy puzzles and good background graphics but gameplay is not enjoyable. there are too much repetitive backtracking, dialog and inventory mechanics quite unpractical and mini games also quickly getting repetitive and tedious. there is also a glitch and this prevents to finish game. if you don't follow the linear "right" path, your next actions not gonna available to you and you re gonna be stuck. this happened a few times to me and i finally gave up and uninstalled the game. if you still want to continue the game you ll have to reload from a old save and play everything again because there is no auto save. that's why i give thumbs down to this game. there are also better similar point and click adventure games. don't bother play this one.
This game is very impressive, even if it has been developped a few years ago. I rarely played a game with such an atmosphere. We really have the impression to play in europe in the early twentieth century. Background and costumes are wonderful. The soundtrack is excellent and Mata Hari is a very seductive character. You'll have to make an effort to get the best ending, even if you play with a walkthrough as i did in my second walkthrough. For me, it's a must play.
Really interesting game. The small issue with the game not starting is easy to fix. After that I was a bit surprised by the gameplay. After I got used to the approach, the story really got me and I now would recommend this game. I may play it again because it seems there were more things I could have done, and must have missed. :D really nice, and I liked the details and the graphics, though maybe not everyone would.
All good and worth it - nice and interesting story, decent graphics (for it's age); gameplay is typical point-and-click. You also get to meet a few historical characters, and those which are not (minor spoiler - a certain 'Jacques Brunel') blend in well.
Although travelling could seriously have been improved through something like 'Fast Travel' as in Frogwares' Sherlock series.
Oh, and as an easter egg, you might learn a thing or two about the applications of Chemistry as you play through.
I give this a thumbs up because, as others have said, the story is interesting, the settings are good and the voice acting better however it is marred by the repetitive train travel, although the expresses help a lot here, a clunky interface requiring you to drop icons on characters to converse (!), action hot spots which are far too hard to find and the pretty terrible dance mini-game dynamics. I know I could replay and improve in some areas but the painful parts don't bear repeating, which is a shame. Steam achievements wouldn't go astray, either. It's still worth grabbing it when it's on sale if you have nothing better lined up, for it's good parts. Overall, 5/10 and a missed opportunity for something much better.
To be concise, the game is just barely ok, where it could have easily been at least 'good'.
Cons:
* Puzzles are just very easy. No real challenge here.
* !!Too much backtracking!! For a game that requires so much going back from one place to another, the very least the designers could have done, is to make it easy and fast. Instead, moving between locations takes ~50-60% of the gameplay time. Moving between countries is required a lot, and often, but everytime you must: go to the current-location --> taxi --> train station --> target country --> target location. So moving from A to B takes ~4-5 screens. Every. Time.
Frustrating, annoying and tedious, it adds absolutely nothing positive to the gameplay.
According to record it seems I played for 7.0 hours. I theorize that if traveling has been easy, I could have completed it in as much as 3!
The story of Mata Hari had some great potential, but the performance is rather poor
The game is an old-school point and click. You play Mata Hari, seductive, desired, curious and suspicious as she is meant to be. You will see the many sides of a sexual spy during a political, psychological and mysterious war.
Although predictable, the story is a nice trip through history.
The main issue with the game is repetitiveness. You have a huge amount of discussions, repetitive OST, repetitive puzzles, impossible dance mini game (another repetitive puzzle) and a bit too much of going between towns.
The good side is, you can turn on the panic button for mini games, including the dancing one. It is barey possible to be successful at it on a computer without a touch screen.
Do I recommend the game? Definitely, for the fans of quests with lots of speech and conversations. As a whole? Nope.
*Sorry for the typos!
Its an average game, the story doesn't really get engaging until towards the end.
The puzzles are decent, the graphics are meh, but not atrocious. The voice acting is done very well and makes up for any lack of polish the game may have.
The main character seems a bit out of touch with reality in some cases.
It would make a good stocking stuffer for anyone who enjoys point and click adventures.
+ Decent graphics
+ Idea behind the game
- Boring conversations
- Boring gameplay
- Low resolution
- No customisation option
Good Point-and-Click Adventure game offering a classic experience with some quite challlenging mini-game puzzles. Playing as the legendary spy who was actually a dancer by profession means you will be doing some fliriting, object-combination and item fetching throughout. Mata's mission are varied and interesting, even though the actual story progression is happening at a decent pacing.
Overall this one is a recommendable adventure game with some replayability as there are different endings to get, depending on three values (Wealth, Spycraft, Skills).
So-so p&c adventure. World famous spy from one hundred years ago mind-fucks and bangs dudes to manipulate them into giving up state secrets. There's way too much emphasis on lame mini-games involving traveling between train stations trying to elude other spies and they even found a way to make her burlesque show boring. Thankfully, they can be skipped if you don't want to rack up points and just play the adventure part. I got it for $5 and took me a little over five hours to beat. This game is geared more toward the casual crowd. It's not horrible if you're desperate for a p&c adventure and you can get it on sale.
