This is more for those who enjoy a good relaxing visual novel rather than a life sim. The choices you make (can) matter, but not to a greater extent to what you expect. Essentially, if you choose the wrong dialogue you can risk losing the couple of friends you attempt to make (which are RNG by the way). What really makes this game shine is its inclusion and diversity. You have a solid mixture of individuals with different preferences and values. You get to choose if you want to be more close to them or terminate the friendship.
Again, this is more of a low tier demo life sim and a chose your path visual novel. Which, is still fun if you're marketing to the correct people. It is frustrating that you are only able to really choose up to three friends per session and between those friends you get to choose if you would like to actually marry them. I do like how once you do finish a play through, you can start again with those same parents. What I don't like is that they are the same generic parents as before (with similar if not the same rehashed dialogue). It would have been really fun and creative to see the personalities change depending on what you chose.
The game also leans heavy with puzzles, reminding me of candy crush. You have to play this game as your "exams" and while it was fun at first, it can get tiring after awhile. It would be nice to see other puzzles instead or multiple choice on past decisions the player had to make. However, I do enjoy choosing where to put my "points" after each day and determining which path my character will ultimately go.
I think this is a great start to a game but ultimately needs more options, more puzzles (or something different for exams), and more writing creativity involved. It's a good start, and I hope to see it....grow up.
Anyway, I found this slightly addictive and fun and the dialogue is smooth (though frustratingly limited and rng). It's not really much of a "choices matter" game. But it is a fun simulation that reminds me of a visual novel. It is re-playable and there is no confusing story or dialogue (though some of them can feel lackluster). It isn't a favorite of mine but it is fun and I think others should give it a try. It's fun just watching a character grow up and I like the idea. I just think it can be better.
Extremely cosy, simplistic game play, beautiful soundtrack, and a gorgeous art style.
Growing Up is one of those games that you pick up now and then, really wish there was more content to this game because it's got a great premise - would love maybe a continuation where we'd get to see our characters an the in-game ones go through university or getting a full time job but I also get why it's capped until the end of high school.
Overall, love this game <3
It's not really a life sim. You're forced down a fairly narrow path and occasionally tested on your Candy Crush skill.
Nice life sim, enjoyable story of growing up, love to meet, know about different characters' stories.
Easy to play and surprisingly addictive!
Picked up while it was on sale. Overall, it's not a bad game, it allows you to turn your mind off for a bit and not have to really think about what you're playing.
The only thing I don't care for is that after you start your second "play-through", the character you watched grow up and build relationships with, just turns into their lousy parents no matter what; wish that you were allowed to keep your character's personality once they become parents. Other than that, it's a pretty decent cozy game to pass the time with.
the mini-games get repedetive and i wish there was a way to choose which characters you meet, but aside from that its a great game
It's pretty good, but unfortunately has some noticeable flaws that are apparent even on your second life. However, despite some repetition from the adult side characters (very immersion breaking even ignoring 90's time loop as a whole [and no, it's not one of THOSE games]), the stories of your school friends are actually quite well done. All of the ones I've experienced so far; Nathan, Bobbie, Richard, and Alicia, all felt very personal and believable.
As for the game play, it's like those old Japanese Tokimeki Memorial games. You schedule tasks and raise stats through a roll of a dice. You also manage money, happiness, and the expectations of your parents. The Brain map is kinda fun and gets better once you understand the game. Exams aren't very fun, but neither are they irl, so I give them a slight pass.
I know it would have been like 3 times the work, but if the adults had a bit more randomness like the school friends, this game would easily be one of the best of its genre. That is really my only complaint. Again it's more a Trainer than a dating sim, although its narrative highs do come from those friendships and potential romances.
gameplay loop is pretty enjoyable. the characters are cool and have a lot of depth. my meow meows................................
Really good game to pass the time, and although a little repetitive at times, it is still satisfying to play. There are so many routes and choices that I have not gotten to them all. Still haven't met all the characters either, but the ones I have seen so far are so alive. It's like interacting with real people with real hopes and dreams! Equal amount of characters I prefer and don't prefer. This game will always be a classic, and will always be one of those games I lean towards on long road trips.
I paid $8 for this on sale. And that is the perfect amount, don't pay any more than that. Its just ok.
The game is enjoyable, and with the differences in story adaption it does allow for a relaxing play through with an added benefit of change to the next go around. The downside I've encountered however can affect the game's ability. Twice now I've had to restart my lives without finishing the game due to an odd issue with loading up the game, the first being that on occasion when I go back into my save file, my skill levels will have completely reset making it nearly impossible to unlock any new learning sections. With the requirement of over 1000 points in some skills later in the game, this soft locks me out of being able to fill up the exam requirement as my brain points also reset quickly making it hard to even try to get my levels back to normal. The other is loading the game to find my save is gone entirely, and having to start over. In four hours of game play, I've had to do two different lives, and both of which I've been unable to finish due to these errors. I really do enjoy the game, and think it's worth it for those life simulation lovers, but with disappearing saves and skill levels, it's a never ending battle.
Edit: A second time of loading up the game to find my save completely gone has challenged any enjoyment of this game, and until it's fixed, I can't say I recommend the game anymore. Three restarted lives, all unfinished due to issues with the game itself.
I've tried maybe 8 out of 16 characters' stories so far, very well written and does not hesitate to touch on sensitive topics.
Wish it dug deeper mechanics wise, such as more info on jobs, stat bonuses from spouses, parent's job, parenting styles etc like Chinese Parents.
I don't really understand people's fascination with this game, you get hours of the same gameplay loop that is not mentally engaging at all. I've seen people talking about choices, but so far the only real choice I feel like I've gotten is my gender, otherwise it's boring conversations with your parents with no benefits, being forced to talk to and make friends with people I don't want to talk to and you're not allowed a rebellious phase as if you disappoint your parents too much, it's game over. I started my second life today and realised it's all just the same stuff, except you're forced to talk to DIFFERENT people this time. Completed one life, and personally I don't want another.
This game is exactly like a SFW/wholesome version of HuniePop. Super fun and engaging to play.
Love moving from one generation to the next. I also love how you progress skill trees and see more of the game the more times you play.
HELL YEAH. I love this game. I just wish it had had a bigger budget. More characters, more complex storylines etc. I like the game as it is but I feel like it has so much potential to be even better.
Cute story, and has re-playablity. As someone who doesn't like puzzles, I enjoyed these and found them relatively easy.
TL;DR if you plan to play once or twice and don't mind a lack of story, get it. If you want to enjoy a good game in a Life Sim genre with actual choices, consequences, characters, story and changes based on your stats - avoid this game.
The game is very surface level. Kind of like a demo or a beta version. They have ideas, but no execution. The characters are boring cardboard cutouts that tell you what their problem is directly to you with a detailed explanation that sounds like it's been pulled out of a wiki page. The choices are very Fallout-esque with "Mean" and "Nice" choice. Most of them don't make sense to pick unless you literally want to roleplay an amoral asshole.
The parents literally do not matter. They are just there to give you a side quest that may or may not upset them. Usually it's something really dumb like "do shopping 10 times" ... right before SATs. Or better yet "Increase [stat here] by 100".
You don't get any benefits for finishing a life. No stat bonuses, no customisation bonuses, even the parents are the exact same cut outs, just with a different visual now.
When I finished the first (probably only tbh) life, game didn't give me any more choices. It just shoved me in a box with some career, married my character off to someone and started a new game. Very dissatisfying. Chinese Parents looks and feels very junky, but it's leagues ahead of this nice looking shell of a game. Just save your money and play something more enjoyable.
Chill game
Game is sucking you in with the stories and choices, definitely worth playing!
The story is really sweet, I like the fact that you can make decisions along the way. The minigame is addicting, I loved exploring all the options and bonuses that slowly uncovered. My first playthrough took me 8 hours, while I was aiming to have the best grades, lets see where the second playthrough takes me.
cause its a good
Generic ass ending.
Don't recommend.
Cozy, chill, & immersive.
Touches beautifully on some heavy/deep themes.
Inclusive & diverse characters.
The game is great with presenting new situations and experiences with each generation. The problem that stuck with me is that regardless of the choices you make in your childhood, when you take control of the child of that pair, their personality is the same lame adult personality. Life experiences and developing personalities tend to still echo into your adulthood in some way. If you were this playful, free-spirited rebel, you're not always going to become this lame paperdoll mannered adult.
The game is a lot of fun, but i'd have loved a lot more if you childhood choices game the adult version some personality.
I really Enjoyed this game I re played it more then 3 times and got up to 17 hours out of it so if you want like a quick fun and relaxing game this is it! Only hard part is really to stick with one tree and its so hard with the quest through out the grow up but is doable. Wish there was more to it though id play it!
good yes
Weird and addicting. The more I played it, the more I liked it. I only wish there was extended life DLC, like college years, mid-life crisis. There is always more to learn and choices to make,
This game has been the one I return to when any other game is too much or sounds uninteresting. These characters have depth and I've found myself truly attached to them. This is a shining example of an indie game you can come back to again and again. The art style is beautiful and the soundtrack is perfect. This is a wonderfully made cozy game and you can tell it was made with love. If I had one single complaint, and it's so small, it would be the exam being a match three game. Regardless, this is a game I recommend to anyone who wants to play a cozy storytelling game with absolutely no farming. I love this game.
Too focused on stat building so wasn't fun.

It was fun to play and collect the achievements, but I wish there was some way to control which friends we meet during the game, cause sometimes I had to restart and restart, if I wanted to do something specific. Apart from that, good game.
This soundtrack is permanently embedded into my brain. I hear it in my dreams.
I was absurdly addicted to this game.
I did all the character stories until I just couldn't take it anymore. Some characters are great, others are laaaame and I think 90% of them have problems with their family but still... I highly recommend it!
And one more thing: if English is not your native language (like me!), but you can speak it moderately, play in English because the translation was the only thing that was lacking in this game.
- I failed at watching cartoons
- I mastered creative writing without ever learning how to read
- Parents gave me dead goldfish to teach me responsibility
- Father wanted me to be more physically active, so I convicted them to take me for a ski trip. As a result they approved me being more active and raised my allowance.
- For that allowance I bought a bulletin board so I can grind more efficiently and snack bars to stove off my depression from working too hard.
The music at infant stage is just waaaay too kitsch.
10/10 like a real life. Would grind to gain parent's approval again
Lots of fun story lines, practically a new game every time
Growing Up is a fun game. It's almost addictive.
I usually prefer a life simulator to be more about being a life simulator. Growing Up is at its core a strategy puzzle game. You need to use your energy, brain points, and knowledge very mindfully. The actual blockbusting puzzle part is fun, but even with 90+ exam readiness is very difficult during the SAT.
If you're really focused on story (like I was) the plothole of the world and most characters staying the same over like 3 generations can be a bit annoying, as can some of the characters never aging. Elliot should not be the same age they were when my character's grandma talked to her.
The bigger focus is on the friends your character will meet. You can seriously impact their lives and decisions based on how you act towards them. It's fun and it's interesting -- I don't have the heart to be mean to any of them so I believe they're all getting their best possible endings, except for Sam, who I got the bad ending with because my character was not gonna be screwed over like that. It is important to check the content warnings for this game if anything really triggers you. Several characters deal with very serious subjects and experiences. In my opinion, they are dealt with well.
The easiest way to get rid of this would be to just stop letting your character have a kid. IDK, I like this game a lot, but fluffing out the story would do a lot for the experience and there are some edges that could be cleaned up.
*sniff* Growing uuuup... Changing wishing I could beeeee... a part of everythiiiiing... seems I really do care...
DOOOO DOOOO DOOOOO DOOOOOO DOOOOOOO DOOOOOO
*sob sob sob cry sob*
I bought this game expecting a fun relaxed story based game, and Growing Up far exceeded my expectations. I've tried other story based life sim games in the past, but they typically felt very basic and soulless. At first I thought this game would focus on an entire lifespan instead of only up until 18, but honestly with the level of detail put into those first 18 years, I'm very happy with it just being focused on that age, and that might be why the game feels more organized and seems to have more heart than if they had to find ways to tie in adulthood and old age.
While there are aspects of this game that do feel a little empty and could be fleshed out more, there is enough content to easily get 4 hours out of a playthrough without it feeling stale, allthough it can drag a little near the end as the brainmap minigame gets a little old and has less of an impact. Additionally, you only meet 3 out of 19 potential characters throughout the play through and there are multiple skill paths you can go down which give the game a nice replayability.
I would like to see them flesh out the parents a little more. As it stands right now you're parents are generally static NPCs that lack identities and personalities. They will give you expectations (or tasks), but their dialogue is very generic and they don't react to what you're doing in the game.
The brainmap minigame is pretty good, but it does get old and it's pretty easy to game. It does require you to strategize a bit about what you need to get out of it, and it helps break up the game so you're not just shooting through all the cutscenes as fast. Aside from the exams, there aren't any other minigames though. I don't feel the game really needs more minigames, and the brain map does evolve over time which is a nice way to keep it from getting too stale, but a little more diversity in the minigames would help with the repetitiveness of having the brainmap every turn.
Really the biggest draw of the game are the character stories, which are generally pretty good and fleshed out. Of course they could still be improved on, so anything to build on these and make the characters even deeper would be a great way to improve on a great game. While the game only does go up to 18, it would also be cool if they could add in college eventually, or even just give you the ability to quickly run through your adult life in the epilogue with a couple quick dialogue options and basic narration.
Being able to make manual saves would also be a nice addition, or at least allowing us to have backup checkpoints. While it does make the game feel a little more realistic by not letting us go back, it's also pretty punishing. Especially if you screw something up in high school, becauase you have to play through the whole game again, and if it's a character you met in high school, there is no guarentee you'll even meet them.
It would also be nice if we had the availability after the first play-through to customize and select which character we'd be introduced to at each stage instead of just being at the mercy of the game and having to restart if we were looking for someone in particular. Alternatively, if we could have multiple options at each stage instead of just being forced into one. Also, being able to start at the elementary school phase would help with replays as the baby and preschool phases are kinda the same every single time.
Of course, I think going in blind and following the game as it presents itself to you is the best way to do it at least the first time, but I screwed up something my first playthrough and spent like 1 an hour repeating the baby and preschool phases until I could meet Alex again and not mess things up with her.
Overall though, I am very happy with the game. I was not expecting to get 12 hours or to hold my attention the way that it did. It's great for kids, it's an easy low stress and fun game, cheap, even as an adult the stories are engaging, there are enough strategy elements that keep the game from being too easy, but with decent planning and strategy it's far from frustratingly difficult. I highly recommend this game.
Yeah "dad" I'll find that cure for cancer real quick right after I uninstall this game. Is this just emotional abuse simulator? The characters are only backdrops to the constant obligatory writing. Want to get to know your friends? Nope! That will just push them away. Every conversation is made to feel as vacuous and patronizing as possible! Kid with one arm? Describes them as selfish. Teen with Autistic traits? Make their only quality being a musical savant! And how could I forget the blatant worship of STEM fields. A meritocratic circle jerk where everyone is unhappy. "The ends justify the means" stuff
It's defintley fun I do wish it focused more on plot and relationships rather than stat building but it's fun. I think the developers could make more games like this one from different time periods you know 70's 80's 50's hell even something like medieval times could be fun.
Great Life Sim/Visual Novel with a "puzzle" element. Did feel sort of repetitive after the 4th or 5th run, but not repetitive enough that I didn't want to 100% it!
chill and peaceful
I think this game is really fun! It can get a little repetitive with the actions but figuring out how to win over every character can be an interesting challenge with unique choices. It seems easy at a glance but picking the right option can be tricky. The game really wants you to learn about the characters and understand what the best option to help them is. It is one of my favorite aspects of the game, however, I do wish that after you completed the game you could choose the people to interact with during a play through.
Lovely
