Visually, a cute game, But it felt like a mobile game ported to PC. The throwing aspect, where the title comes from i'd assume, seemed pointless to me. The game felt empty, but i only played just short of an hour. You can run super fast or go really slow, no middle ground so thats annoying while exploring. I feel like it just needs polished and desperately needs some finer details. A little quest list on the left hand side just doesnt draw me in to feel interested enough to keep playing. Dispatch camps around the map, place some buildings, repeat.
Fun game...but has some major optimization issues. Day 9 keeps crashing when the bandit raid starts so I can't progress. I start the game on day 1 with 120 FPS. By Day 9 I'm getting 20 fps. Every time you add a building you lose a couple fps until it becomes unplayable. I even turned the resolution down all the way so it looks like a N64 game and I still get very low frames. I have an RTX 3080 and 32 gigs of ram with a Ryzen 7 3800XT, so a game this simple looking shouldn't have an issue running at 720x480.
I think it has a ton of potential and am excited to play this with my wife and friends, just isn't going to be as good if you finish the entire research tree by day 2 and crash by day 9.
Only thing I dislike is that even on the large world, everything still feels so small. BUT with the roadmap showing the plan to add in ship building, I imagine the world will be opening up more, and I'm greatly looking forward to future updates!
Runs super smooth besides having to restart every few years as the FPS drops get super crazy
There have only been two bugs I've consistently encountered. One when placing some objects like infrastructure or terraforming, there's a delay. The second is that sometimes people will just gather in specific spots, but just yeeting them into the stratosphere seems to fix them.
Perfect game for people that are OCD like me since you can pick up and place anything anywhere.
I've put in about 40 hours so figured I'd give my feedback on the game.
Overall, a game with excellent potential, a decent start but room for immediate improvement. In it's current state I would recommend it with some contingencies. It kind of reminds me of early minecraft; no tutorials and you sort of need to figure things out on your own or look up guides. If you go in 100% blind, you're going to struggle. For example your workers need to be fed, the game tells you this. However it doesn't tell you that your citizens want multiple food sources from soup kitchen, bakery, bread shop, butchery and bar. You have to figure that out yourself. It also doesn't tell you that citizens have a hidden "range" for their needs. So for example you might move a sawmill to a forest far away from your city to collect more wood, but eventually the game will tell you broadly that a citizen's housing, bathroom and food needs aren't being met. If you're unaware of this mechanic you'll be quickly confused. These are just a few examples.
With this being said, if you're aware of the mechanics then the game IS alot of fun! It's very easy to get into and with the ever-growing population while trying to keep citizen happiness up you always feel like there's something to do.
It's also worth noting a large update is expected in January 2025 so for those currently on the fence I'd suggest giving the game just one month. To the developer's credit they're quick on the feedback and they're quite active on the discord. They're obviously passionate about the game so I have no doubts the game will continue to improve
absolute love this game! I've done everything i can for now and cant wait for the updates!
- sometimes while flattening land a square will lag until you flatten another area
I made Aoki into a star because he couldn't find his way to an outhouse...
it's as deep as a puddle.
Pretty much everything that is available can be experienced within an hour or two and then you just have to make your own fun.
Which yeah can be fun but for the price tag it's not worth it, there's a lot of content being teased ingame with 'coming soon' or 'coming 2025' plastered everywhere the game has a lot of potential but for the current price it's not worth it imo.
I LOVE the concept so far and the ideas/road-maps is making me extremely excited. I recommended this but I will say that what you see is what you get, the game is still very much in its early phase and so if you are strapped for cash I recommend wish-listing cause that helps the devs while also keeping this game in your sights, but if you truly wish to support the devs and have faith then by all means buy it... But remember its very bare-bones so far.
3 things I wish for.
1. Destruction of a massive scale or detail, the more we continue gaining followers/power, the more anime protagonist we become. I want to unleash some crazy powerful slams that cause earthquakes or level an entire base with magic and have it explode into splinters, I wanna fight crazy monsters with these powers... essentially being a King/Queen with superpowers to boot is such a cool idea.
2. Customization, I love the main character and her color swaps but if I can play as a cool knight guy with a helmet and all that would be extremely cool, or maybe a mage or engineer cosmetic. I have a feeling that you guys are already hard at work at other things so maybe the customization of the character might be in the bottom rung so its all good, Core aspects first, then the fine details later and all that.
3. Maybe the civilian can speak to me and give me quest or point out POI's on the map and tell me what they need and such, just more interaction/choices for my people/kingdom would be great.
Other then those wishes (Which by the way, if they wish to focus on something else then by all means go bananas, the future for this game is very bright.) I eagerly await for the next updates and growth of this game. GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY ON THE DEV TEAM AND GIVE IT YOUR ALL, I PRAY AND GIVE YOU GUYS MY BEST WISHES!
The game has a great potential, pleasurable graphic and nice locomotion. Need more activities, additional side quests and more buildings and citizens variations. As usual with the early access shit, waiting for the future content patches.
I played the demo version a lot and really enjoyed it!
I’m so happy the game has been released!
I’m eagerly looking forward to new updates <3
I feel like some of the negative reviews are unfair. It's EARLY ACCESS - the game warns you that it is when you start playing it. This is the ground floor for a great game and it's only going to get better from here. If you want a polished game, with a ton of options, then just wait. If you want to experience this game, decorate your city, and be a part of getting to see a ton of new stuff added over the months and year(s) to come, then drop the 20 bucks.
The game is a good overall experience. Yeah, there's some FPS issues, especially changing from winter to spring when all the trees pop in. But I feel like this will all get ironed out.
The OWL SHEEPS are not in the game yet... can't wait for those. haha.
I give this a thumbs up do to the game being really fun to play. It is in early access it seems, so I can not fault it for the bugs I am experiencing.
Bugs:
- When I am filling or digging terrain it will have me see through the map, will dig or fill an area, but wont show it is filled or dug up until I do another fill/dig,
-I will be moving just fin and then I begin to tether/rubber band/glitch about.
Overall once the game is finalized I do not doubt it will far succeed my expectations of where I believe this game can go. I love making my own villages and towns and this game sure does quench that desire for those types of games.
Early release... was too early. The game has a lot of promise, the movement is super fun but there is not enough content yet to really justify it yet. I hope to revisit and have the game change my mind.
Cute looking game, love animations and vibe!
Can't wait to see how the game will changed with new updates.
Games fun wish there was more explanation on what to do and how to run a perfect city but definitely a fun game all around
Very creative game. Fun to play with friends. The developers and team are active on the game's discord and take player feedback/suggestions seriously. It's still in early access so it's lacking in some areas for now, but they have been implementing new updates/bug fixes and features pretty regularly.
At the time of writing the game has been in early access for just on 2 weeks, I bought it and an extra copy to play with my girlfriend.
It is very fun and is reminds me of the old Kingdom of Kelflings mixed with minecraft and dungeon keeper.
The game is still a bit rough and needs more work, but the Devs are active in the discussions and are actively making changes to the bugs and issues being reported with transparency on what is to come so if you want to build a city and kill pigs in the woods then grab a friend because it is far better playing with multiple people.
I got to be quite honest and it comes from a good place cause the ideas are great and all, but even for early access this is way under cooked, there is nothing more than there was in the beta and the game has come with many bugs which they are hot fixing quickly which I appreciate. That said I am enjoying my time just making my town and stuff, but I really think they should have waited to release it with their first planned major update which would of really helped it. If you buy this game now at the time of writing you not gonna get much from a progression standpoint, but if you just like constructing and building then there is a good few hours for ya.
Overall like the game and the vision on offer but yeah this is not far from what the demo was, early access or no there is just way too little here for the price, the UI is just...beyond baron and again bugs. I have faith in time this will be a great game but it is far from that at the moment. Give it to maybe first major update in January and this game should be worth a few hours of your time. If you are someone who who wants to see progression and not just build make a nice looking city.
If you do play this now, you are a play tester, like me and many others, and I hope we can help the devs bring there vision to fruition.
To the devs, and the whole team, I see your passion and love, but now, we need to see that commitment. Best of luck to you all, I look forward to seeing the results.
I don't understand people who get an early access game and then complain when they see that the game isn't finished.
The point of selling an early access build of a game is to allow the developers to have a little extra income while developing the game. Anyways this might be the most polished early access I've ever played. The movement feels about as good as Mario Odyssey and The Big Catch. There isnt a lot of decorative buildings yet but the ones we have are basically essentials.
I'm loving the game so far, excited for release!
This is a community builder game where you play as the leader with the ability to throw structures and other things as part of its signature mechanic, with some hack and slash combat added in. However, the game needs more work, more content before its worth the price. As it is, its more akin to a paid demo.
That said, I do look forward to its future update. It has potential and I do hope the devs deliver.
Of course lacks a bit of content, but it's an early access game that was released 3 days ago. I am looking forward to its develeopement!
It's early access, but I definitely see the potential for this game.
It does start with no instructions, expected in this point of development, but things are still pretty starightforward.
Build, gather, fight.
Build your kingdom, preferably in an easily defensible position if possible
you will never have enough wood so chop down all the big trees you see, they'll grow back with season changes
jump while attacking to perform more swings and avoid attacks
build up food production and make sure you have plenty of outhouses
it's better to have the kingdom be under staffed than have citizens unemployed, they may come back as bandits
the map is live, so you can see the encampments even if they are across the map
use your sword for trees, wrench for stones and enemy buildings (hogs, banners, commander tents)
use the shovel, later in research tree, to terraform to your heart's content
if you place buildings right, you won't have to worry about plants getting planted and harvested
taxes are one thing to go up and down on when you have military, up when gold is down, down when gold is up to prevent citizen stress
it does have a small learning curve, but I definitely do recommend it to anyone who thinks fighting games lack content and city building games lack being able to walk around your city, as well as to people who want all that and want to be able to throw almost anything they can see
So far I like the game. I'm looking forward to the changes to come and the fun I'll have as updates roll out!
at next fest the was the best game out there. It dont deserve a mix. Its play super well and only get better
Update
This game is a real gem something you could spend hours on. But.... the tutorial isnt that great its not that complicated but one thing i didnt see is the map if you click on buildings it will show you the radius of the building example soup kitchen or even housing. Example it said i didnt have enough housing so i put many and it still said it so i noticed my mine was out of the range of a house and out house. I restarted 2 times nearly uninstalled and on the 3rd i realised this map system. Its not hard but should be in tutorial. Beautiful game and fun to play
So far, even for an Early Access game, there's nothing in this game. The UI is a nightmare, menu options layered behind multiple layers and even more layers of UI options that only serve to be more of a massive inconvenience than anything intuitive. Navigating the UI to do anything in-game is more like a puzzle than it is easy to search and access and keep a smooth flow of gameplay. You'll be fumbling with your controls due to how awful the UI translates into actual gameplay.
You can see the Early Access schedule for the research tree and... it's really sad.
This game is plagued with performance issues and it's an un-optimized mess. The game can't handle worlds in multiplayer when there are 30+ townspeople. The more egregious issues begin around 15, become more noticeable around 30 and if you ever make it to 60+ people, your game is wholly unplayable.
The only way you're able to play this game is essentially waiting for midway through Early Access considering the hotfixes break world saves and forces you to slog through the extremely slow beginning.
The worst part is, the game drops you in the summer. There are 3 ingame day/night cycles for each season. By the time winter comes along, you have no preparations, no food, no nothing and a small village filled with deserters that will join bandit armies that come to attack you.
The worst part about bandits coming to attack you? You can't see where any of them are on your compass. They are supposed to show red, but never do and you're stuck either ignoring there's an attack going on or you waste loads of time looking for stragglers. The longer you take to find the bandits, the more your villagers defect to them because they're stressed and you're not doing anything about it.
The game straight up lies to you when it says that crops fully grow after a single season. This is blatantly wrong because it takes 2 seasons for your crops to actually fully grow and become usable. You can't feasibly provide for your village because your resources drain BY THE MINUTE!!!!!!! Everything is accumulated or used every minute. Meaning, you're never able to just chill and do stuff. The worst part about this is, the hotfix prior to this review "balanced" structures and gave them paper thin durability. This, coupled with just how many resources villagers use to repair everything, you never have enough for anything.
The villagers never actually do their jobs and you're left doing all of the farming on your own. Doing everything on your own because everybody is just running all over the map, getting into fights with everything, getting stressed out, getting pissed off and defecting.
The warnings the game constantly plagues you with are insurmountable and no matter what you do, nothing is ever good enough and they will continue to plague your screen the entire time you're playing.
There's so much still wrong and missing with this game that a lot of the city builders and survival games have on Early Access release. Especially with games of smaller teams. This game prides itself on it's mobility and nonsense you can do in it, but, it amounts to nothing because most of the mobility for the most part is useless, pointless or too jank to actually get going properly.
Never use the shift key. For anything. The main mobility feature that is advertised the most. Being able to dash through the sound barrier and drift. It's useless for anything that isn't you trying to get around in the water because you run into EVERYTHING uncontrollably unless you have a perfect and empty plane to run on. The parkour is jank because your character will constantly want to move towards the camera when you're trying to do wall jumps and mantle, often forcing you to jump off and away from whatever "mountain" you're trying to climb.
This game feels almost like a scam with it's advertising. What they shown was a lot more appealing than what we actually got.
This game needed to be worked on A LOT longer before launching into Early Access because this game is like pre-pre-alpha. More pre-alpha than Carnal Instinct after it's years of going absolutely nowhere and constantly coming out with worse updates and that's BAD.
I just hope the devs take this Early Access seriously, because this game is just... it's awful to play right now. It's not fun.
The worst part is, my friends were really excited about this game. We are now severely disappointed and want almost nothing to do with this game. See you next year, I guess.
Edit: Thanks for the clowns. I really got under peoples' skins with this one. Good. Seethe. Hate me because I made a negative review on your favorite monetary investment and continue to feel threatened by the impact my one of the almost 100 negative reviews has on this currently mixed game. (Spoiler Alert: it won't get the devs shut down or canceled. So stop worrying.)
I didn't expect people to understand what the first two words in my review mean in the first place. I literally said at the end of my review, "See you next year". Because, that's as long as it will take for this game to make enough development progress to make coming back to for a few more hours worthwhile (Because you can literally see the research unlock dates on when they will be implemented).
Nothing in this review is wrong as of the writing of it and of this edit if you so much as played a few hours of it. You experience everything the game has to offer in an hour (generous) of actual game-play (2 if you're screwing around) anyway because that's about as long as it takes to not only unlock everything, but also, build everything and get your world to the point to where your game is barely playable on a coop world.
Just because a game is in Early Access doesn't mean it's immune to any and all criticisms. Especially if you're selling a product. For 20 dollars no less and has less content than a game for 5 dollars would have on Early Access. Criticism is how things improve. My goal isn't to ensure the downfall of this game. It's to keep people from impulse buying it because content creators that got a hold of it before everybody else (and severely biased closed testers) had/have nothing but good things to say about their monetary and time investment. Thinking you're only allowed to be happy with a game you spend money on that is Early Access is one of the reasons why Valve has been changing Early Access rules and regulations. People allow devs to get complacent and there are countless Early Access scams that have run amok on this platform.
Hopefully I'll remember this game in a year and will change my review depending on the state of it then. But, don't be shocked if I forget this forgettable game exists. I'd be more lenient if this game wasn't thrown onto this platform for 20 bucks when it's essentially nothing. 20 bucks is far too much for this game. Especially in it's current state. You owe it to yourself to steer clear of this game for now. Come back in a year maybe when there's more stuff that has come out for it to warrant it's 20 dollar price tag.
Overthrown is a fun mix between a city-builder and a world Sandbox. I see a lot of potential in this game and I've had fun with what's in there right now.
If you enjoyed the demo, that's pretty much what you get today without the time limit.
The typical city-builder gameplay is in there and revolves around building facilities for your citizens to gather supplies like building materials and food.
But this is mixed with a sandbox experience where you get to shape your settlement however you like with a simple but pretty complete building system. This is surprisingly well implemented into the core loop of the game where the settlement will get attacked by bandits every once in a while and the way you setup your defence will influence the outcome (as well as your dexterity with the blade)
Everything in there is clean and I've encountered close to no bugs or glitches.
But it's important to realise that this IS a Early Access title.
Right now, I'd say there is about 3-4 hours of content to play with (if you exclude the endless hours you could spend reworking your settlements looks and harvest the necessary supplies) and some mechanics seem either underdevelopped or underexplained.
I'll make a quick list of the point of improvement I'd love to see in the future:
- A more lengthy and structured tutorial. Building 3 sawmills, a few houses, toilets and a kitchen didn't exactly teach me how all those work together/
- A better explanation of work assignment and general population management. At first, I thought it was all very intuitive, but after a while, I realised I had no farmers farming and no hunters hunting while having 4 unemployed people...
- Explain the stress mechanic better.
- Make the UI more intuitive. The city-builder part of the UI is tucked away in the menu. There is a supply bar, but for some reason, it hides itself after a few seconds after harvesting supplies. It makes it harder to keep track of things.
- Ability to layer constructions. For example, if I make an arch for a bridge, I'd like to be able to build blocks on it, but right now, these blocks go right to the floor.
- A more segmented research tree. It honestly felt like I was given too many things at the same time and I didn't really understand what they all did so I just built everything since I had plenty of resources without really putting much thought into the management of all of it...
- More defined kingdom limits. The world seems endless so it's sometime surprising to run into an invisible wall you hadn't planned on while doing your city plans.
- More events and scale. The bandit attacks are easily dispatched without guards or walls. It would be interesting to see more
Overall though, I really enjoy the game and I look forward to seeing change and grow!
i really want to like this game it is early access at moment so sure will improve but at this moment i can not say to get it as is right now
but i hope to see some updates and will come back and change this from thumb down to up cuz the time i did play i enjoyed but 2 hours of play is all i got so far
Based on where the current state of the game is, this is a fantastic game so far! Overthrown has proven to be a fun sandbox experience. Learning how to play is a bit touch and go with no tutorial (that I've been able to notice). With several hidden techs to be released in a later patch, it doesn't seem like this game is meant for a very long experience. In 10 hours I managed to do two small play-throughs to test out starting strategies and how the game operates. My third run has taken me 6h, and I've got my town to the point where it can handle its own defences, and there's few problems that ever require my attention. I imagine run times may double in later patches, but for now it's still an enjoyable way to kill and evening and unwind.
This is a Yes... BUT!... This game is in early access.
Even,... Very Early Access!
This means there's very little content!
You can "do everything" that's currently available (dec. '24) in an hour or two.
However!
The devs are indicating what gets added next, so new content is coming.
The game itself is a community management game with some very unique style choice in how to do the thing.
You can pick up pretty much anything, including oak trees, and throw them into the sawmill, or pick up the sawmill and throw it at some trees, or pick up the sawmill and sprint full force through the woods, going excessively fast, until you hit something.
You can pick up the people of your town and throw them.
And their outhouses.
The combat is fast, and the local outlaws will raid you if you don't go after them first.
Currently the combat feels a little imbalanced.
There is wildlife, it's hostile, and you can pick up their dens and bring them home if you don't want to go far for your pork.
There's a genuine sense of joy in the way this plays and the devs openly challenge players to find a way to play the game "not as intended",.. to be creative in your solutions and builds, to find ways around the design, which tells you that they take the work seriously while being deeply unserious.
I genuinely think this is gonna be brilliant when it's done cooking, but right now, that may not be enough for you.
It's still got a ways to go.
But if it sounds good to you, you could pick it up, show some support, and see how wild this goes. :)
I gave this game an honest try at release of the beta, but there is hardly any content. It doesn't seem to be worth the time for now. I would come back to it in the late summer or end of 2025 when the planned updates should be implemented.
It feels like I payed to play a 2 hour demo tester. there was a lack of content, the notification system is insufficient, no player guide, nothing to help the player know what to do and how. Combat is lack luster especially as there are long range enemies and no long range weapons for the player.
Movement and running was fun, Moving and picking up buildings was fun. picking up giant trees was amusing as was running on water.
Movement feels awesome but there's nothing else at this state. No tutorial, no ressource indicators for the build menu. Just go hit a tree, then spawn a building for whatever reason. Way too early to say that you get any meaningful gameplay out of it. But i'll keep it on the wishlist.
The difference between a game and a toy lies in the existence of clear and consistent rules that lead to a goal. Overthrown is not a game, it's a toy.
In this state, which I will consider alpha state, this product does not meet the minimum elements to be considered a game. It is an experience without a doubt and I am going to detail it:
The movement: the reason why I acquired this game was because of the movement, after watching a video of Iron Pineapple on Youtube; and my only problems with the movement, are 2:
a) This game asks for a double jump ASAP
b) directing the character after a wall jump is problematic
Outside of these 2 elements, it's the most fun movement I've experienced in a game, in years.
UI: I got used to the UI after a long time of use, but honestly and even though it's clean and readable, it still needs consistency tweaks. My suggestion: do heat readings. UI is an art that takes time to perfect and adjust. You are almost there.
Art: it's fine, it exists and it's there. It's not ugly, not at all; What I am referring to is that this style of art has become the default for several projects and its overuse prevents there from being a distinction of the product with respect to others. It's important to have differentiating visuals. The princess isn't much different from any Clash Royale character or anything Disney-related. It is not urgent, but for product positioning reasons, I would suggest giving the princess more differentiating elements, which make her unique and easy to recognize and distinguish from other princesses in the market.
Music: please someone stop it! It becomes tremendously repetitive immediately. My suggestion: use more ambient music, which is not intrusive, but accompanies the actions. Look at Elden Ring and The Legend of Zelda TOTK/ BOTW, they make the music almost imperceptible and yet ...
If this were a game designed to be played in short sessions, catchy and repetitive music isn't that much of a problem, but when a game demands hours of dedication, it's best not to let the music stand out.
Gameplay: Is there an open game loop, or under the umbrella of "sandbox" have you been given a license to omit all the instructional elements and consistency in the rules that should exist for this interactive experience to be considered a game? I will lean towards the second. The product lacks direction, there is not even a motivation, which through a story, vaguely stimulates to do anything. There are a lot of commands, given in the top left corner of the screen. How am I going to do that? It is apparently my chore to discover it. It took me about 9 hours to understand that you can only plant on the lowest floor of the substrate pile. Why should I appear in a high area of the game if I will not be able to develop that area later? and even worse, why does no one warn me about it? Why should my "ape moment" of the game be to decipher its logic for planting, being a fundamental mechanic? I understand that early access means: we need money to fulfill this promise of a game that we have in mind; but there must be a game or the basis of one in order to create an early access state; And that's what the mixed rating reflects. We, people who don't give thumbs up, don't hate the product, we are people who would like to love it, but can't.
Combat: it is tremendously clear to me that combat is only a complementary mechanic of the product and that it only serves to exalt those heroic and super powerful characteristics of the princess, which is why combat is limited in theory to dodging and mashing a button to attack. Fair enough, but after I accidentally discovered that I can heal myself, the loop of combat is: tank the attacks and attack back. Running at full speed behind a tree, healing myself and speed back to finish off my opponents. There should be some form of administration or decision in combat, such as changing the command timing, to get different moves and thus make combat fun. This game, by the way, cries out for charged attacks (holding down the button to hit harder on release), as well as parrying and the possibility of focusing on specific enemies (targeting). However, if all this were ignored, what is urgent are i-frames: it is necessary for the player to be able to interrupt the infinite combos, especially when recovering from an enemy attack and when standing up. Even Dark Souls understands this, and it draws itself as a difficult game.
Finally: There must be teleportation to the spawn point. If the world was full of activities, I would understand being made to walk back, because my attention could be caught by an event along the way, but right now, it is actually a chore to have to walk back to base. The game needs for the ability to use markers in the map, markers like that used by the crown.
I have expectations of you, the developers and your product; It can be a work of art if you decide to do so, but at the moment, I cannot recommend others to give their money to acquire this product.
This game is a gem! Slightly undercooked but give it time and I believe this game has the potential to become a game of the year. The movement is great and I really enjoy the artstyle. The city builder and combat aspect needs more cooking but the developers DO listen to feedback like no other dev team i met before and it's been fun to interact with this game's community. There is just so much love in every fibre of this game
This is an early access title and if you go into it with that mindset it is incredibly fun! I've player ~250h in the alpha/beta of this game and I am still having fun. You can unlock everything within a few hours, sure - but there are so many neat little details to uncover. I took the time and explored every single feature to its fullest and i am still learning new stuff!
I would rate this game 8/10. The only thing from stopping it to be a 10/10 is the current lack of objective, enemies could be stronger, the map is a bit empty and the performance needs improvements. But I believe these incredible devs can fix all of that in due time! Looking forward to more updates!
It seems like a fun game, but five minutes in, and the Research screen is broken for me. I'll come back in a couple of patches. It was fun just running around for a few minutes, though, so I think once they get some bugs worked out, it will be fine.
I've been watching this game's development on tiktok for a while. I'm not gonna lie though, I'm a little disappointed, but think people should give it a chance in the future when there is more content.
Pros:
-Movement is amazing. Like really really smooth. Takes some figuring out but it's by no means complicated to the point you can't figure it out by goofing around.
-Graphics are very nice. Very fun cartoony thing to look at.
-Devs are very responsive to issues being brought up and seem to genuinely passionate about this game.
Cons:
-Bugs. A LOT of bugs. Had to scrap a save because for some reason my citizens would not go to the soup kitchen, use the bathroom, or go to their homes despite plenty being readily available.
-Soldiers just kinda... Get stressed over nothing to the point they defect. Then a new citizen takes that soldier's place and the cycle continues.
-There's no content. Like. None. There's enough for maybe an hour to an hour and a half. That's about it. You're paying for what is essentially the demo. I understand the game just released into early access so there won't be as much as a full game... But this fells like paying for a demo.
I wish I could give an "Eh" rating. The devs are very passionate and hopefully will continue working on the game so I don't mind supporting them early on. However I'd be lying if I said what has been released isn't a let down. Hope they continue the game and add enough to justify the price.
Honestly, this game is pretty bare bones in its current state, BUT it is in Early Access. The devs are very communicative with the community and so far the framework of an amazing game is here.
I got a good feeling about this game if it gets the support it needs to truly shine. I recommend anyone give it a shot, its pretty short right now in terms of how quickly you can reach the end of progression, but its worth taking a gander to see what will be to come!
So for an Early access game, its pretty incredible, I really enjoyed my time with it, and after reading the road map, I'm pretty excited for its future!
That said I can see some folks getting frustrated with it in its current form, The Lack of tutorial is its biggest weakness, it took me way too long to realize that my wrench can demolish the bandit tents, I found myself building saw mills next to camps so I could hurl the tents into them! Its also unclear what makes villagers happy or unhappy, and found that there was a steady stream of soldiers becoming bandits even though I was paying and feeding everyone.
I'd also recommend implementing a ping system for alerts, there was a few times my soldiers where fighting and I couldn't find where the attack was happening.
I will say movement and combat are hands down the best bits of this game, I'm still discovering the massive amount of traversal options I have and just running through the fields is one of the most satisfying things to do it this game! I've also been a sucker for a simple combat system, and I feel this balances fights really well, Enemies are pretty tanky but one on one your clearly stronger, the key is using the movement you've got to your advantage, its a real nice feeling to kite an army of bandits into a tight space and then letting loose on them! Its really clear these two elements have been the main focus of this game's development and it shows!
Ultimately the game just needs a few tweaks to its introduction and user experience and we'll have a classic on our hands!
I'm torned whether I should recommend this game or not. But ultimately I'm leaning towards - Wait for patches.
Currently the game has very little content ( which took me ONE HOUR AND A HALF to complete ). Although I'll admit I didn't bother beautifying my kingdom or fixing problems with citizens unhappiness.
To my defence... the game doesn't tell you ANYTHING except : Here's a list of things to do.
There is no tutorial on how to manage the Tax / Happiness of the citizens, the game didn't explain to me that once I pick up a crown I'll be essentially LOCKED to a ONE REGION on the map and as far as I know there is no way to explore MORE?! Why?
The map feels mostly empty and aside from OUTLAW invasion there is no events going on ( even when the citizens are unhappy they will just leave / defect to Outlaws but no rebellion against the player will occur ).
NPC's pathing is rather dodgy, they will complain about not having resources yet I had plenty... There is no explanation on how far facilities have to be placed in order for NPC's to use them... so I found "fertilizer" around the mine which was far away from my main city. Probably poor miners had to relieve themselves lol.
There are 3 maps to choose from small/medium/ large but because players are locked in a small area once the crown is picked up... it doesn't matter that much. There is hardly any animals roaming around and movement can be janky when climbing.
I wish there was MORE.... but sadly there isn't.
Lastly the combat is simple with no special abilities or ranged options. I have completed 1 full in game year and all seasons and the "Tech Tree" says Coming in 2025. So I doubt there's more weapons to unlock even If I push myself on.
Why is the movement in a town-building game so much better than in any open-world game that has come out in the last 10 years? Amazing!
this is just the demo but somehow worse performance, will be a fun game eventually. right now the game can't keep up with even a small to medium city (approx 50 citizens) but sure if u have the money and like city builders go for it, i will copy paste my first impressions from the demo so u can read if u are interested
First Impressions:
this is a chill city builder with a surprising combat system.
on one side you have the classical balacing of citizen's shelter, food, happiness and employment which are all done with a veraity of placeable stations\ houses. and on the second hand, you have a surprising amount of combat, that is pretty simple but fun.
i will start with the combat becuase it is the smaller of the 2.
Combat:
from what i saw in the demo you have 2 weapons, 3 if u count your hands, they both act the same just have different attack speed and attack damage. you can also dodge and dash, and if u combo dash with an attack, you get a powerfull energy wave that flys ahead and dmgs enemies.
you can also get some soldiers from your kingdom buildingsto defend, which is a great segway into the next point which is the city builder aspect.
for every citizen you have you get X amount of research each minute, you can spent that research on things like soldiers or farming.
lets say you unlocked the soldiers, then you will unlock a few buildings, you need to build those in order to be able to place down soldiers. in the demo you can only have melee or ranged, as well as a ranged tower which i didn't see attack even once.
placement is like minecraft on a grid, you can push the object back or rotate it but once you placed it, you have to go to the object and pick it up before you can change it's location. and you can pretty much pick up everything you want, everything i tried, worked.
treating your citizens right, is key. you will have to feed them, house them and keep them safe by building walls, recruiting soldiers and manipulating the terrain for a more defensive placement of buildings.
you will narutaly build a smaller village which will grow into a bigger and bigger city, briging with it problems like low frame rate and if you are like me, need your things organized you will constantly change your houses and other buildings around, just because you need more of a certain type of building.
the game doesnt lack problems, they are mostly bugs, lack of information and quality of life stuff but they are still problems none the less. for example, farming works kinda strange, i mean it makes sense in real life but not in game, listen. things in your farm grow once a season, meaning you need to plant a whole bunch, which is fine. but after the 5 mintues they tend to the farm, they go roam the forests and bring to your village all the enemies they can find. i just wish maybe instead they would give you a lower amount of food but in a steady way, meaning once a day or something similar.
turning things to be more active is also nice, becuase most of the time, it's just you running in between empty houses making you city feel like a ghost town.
a funny thing that happens in the game is, that during night time soldiers go to sleep, and they even demand pay for it.
in the QoL department tweaking the building mode could be good, maybe a top-down camera would be better as everything is already grid based anyway, and even manipulating the terrain, level everything to your current hight anyway.
so to end this first impressions, i would say, yes this is fun, i wish the demo didn't limit me to 90 minutes which is about enough to kill the first wave and that's it. i want to continue managing, my farms, tavens, houses and even outhouses, and yes they generate fertilizer for the farms.
this game comes out sometime this year, no release date sadly, but i will keep my eye on it, so stick around if u wanna see more of this
The gameplay and movement are insane, just like no content for now.
A bit dissappointed by the early access release since it hasn't gotten any more content than the demo had.
Loving the game so far! Feels incredibly smooth to play. I am in love with the movement system already!
