"That won't work, that won't work, THAT WON'T WORK! "
Once again, I wish there was a
Neutral option
, but since this is cute project done by a small team, I can't compare them to massive studios' titles, nor can I give it a thumbs up in case I discourage them to try again.PROS:
- Cute, hand drawn animations. Don't expect Deponia, but the two artists gave their best.
- Lovely setting, beautiful backgrounds.
- Story is interesting enough to keep me playing, the jokes are alright, lots of references to other more famous video games.
- Walking is fast, the world is easy to navigate in.
OBVIOUS CONS:
- It's super short (thank God I bought it when it was on Sale).
- Unfinished plot, with little chance of getting a sequel (but you never know).
CONS that really bugged me on a personal level and I hope the creator will take them as constructive criticism/suggestions for their next game/ chapter, because they are super talented and need to keep creating more games:
- The game didn't feel good to play - it felt frustrating. Here are some of the reasons:
> Please add more dialogue when we are using objects the wrong way. I got so sick of hearing "That wont work!" 50 times before something eventually worked. Just tell me if you don't need to poor some Ketchup in the empty ink bottle so I can die the horseshoe red, ok? XD
> Obvious solutions to puzzles don't work and we are not told why. When not repeating "That won't work", occasionally Joyfess will remark on how, let's say, weird our line of thought is, when in fact it makes PERFECT sense! There were rarely any hints or suggestions on what to do.
> Sometimes you know exactly what to do, but the game won't let you until you go back and forth a few times and do unnecessary things in order to confirm what needs to be done (e.g. The carriage and Oil dispenser, I had to speak several times with the bartender to gain his permission before I could move it. Or when I found out I needed the Red Pepper thingy I wen to the Farmer only to be told I need to speak with someone else first before questioning him......Why?) I mean it's alright to have other characters give you hints on where to find the FINAL hint, but they shouldn't be mandatory when the player has already figured it out.
> I was stuck a few times and really confused. For example: I had no idea how to use the icons from the recipe until I checked a walkthrough. In fact, there were several times I felt completely lost because of the game's mechanics or lack of explanation or hints. For instance when I combined the oil with chicken sauce to get the sleeping potion, one of the bottles disappeared, which led me to believe that the one that is left contains the needed liquid. However, after 20 tries and me cursing under my breath like a proper sailor to get in character, I suddenly realised that the "combined potion" was moved at the end of the item list (which you need to scroll to see). I know it's not a major problem, but it made me so annoyed when I kept wondering where random items have gone!
> The "Indians" and especially their "smelly" chief... forget it, I am not into politics. Just felt Joyfess was rather rude and condescending when dealing with them. The stinky joke was also very unnecessary, didn't have anything to do with the plot. Also Joyfess's parting words to the thribe were... yep, just, no.
> The story draaaaaaaaaaaaaged for too long, and nothing was happening, despite it being short. Some of the objects we had to find were just so random and convoluted and didn't really make the experience fun. Instead of investing so much work and time on the random puzzles, next time the creator can tighten the plot and include more storytelling and character development that goes with the puzzles. I know that finding seemingly unnecessary objects to get to the final one is typical for Point and Click adventures, but at least try to add more humour or minimise their number.
> I wish there was more dialogue option when trying to combine items and/or trying to give/use the items the wrong way...again!
The game is cute and gives you a nice nostalgic feeling, especially to a Point and Click adventure fan like me. It was done by a small team which was probably not easy. It's not a finished product, but it was a good result for a first try. Point and Click adventure games are rarely popular or financially profitable, so I am grateful to every creator who is capable of adding more titles to the market. Keep them coming and good luck!
I was so interested in the game in the beginning, being a huge Monkey Island fan. This game looked so good, especially the graphics and the whole atmosphaire. I will definitely won't support it by buying the rest of the episodes though. This is the most racist game I've ever played! I can't belive that this is a 2020's game and not a 1800's! I haven't seen Natives Peoples portrayed so badly in a very very long time. Unacceptable.
Okay Monkey Island Vibes worth a punt if on sale
-Pros
Nice art style
Good controls, entirely playable with mouse.
Decent voice acting
Standard point and click puzzle design, inventory based for the most part.
Interesting characters
Humorous story and dialog
-Cons
No hot-spot reveal tool, although to be fair there is very little (if any) pixel hunting.
Short
Not a complete story, only episode one of a planned two patter. In fairness this should be fairly obvious from the game title.
Overall recommended.
Surprisingly great game! Fantastic graphics, spot-on voices and nice puzzles. Thumbs up! If only there would be more of the story... guess we can't but hope!
Good point-n-click fun, from a small dev
Very short (under 3 hours with a couple peeks at a walkthrough when I felt hopelessly stuck), decent point-and-click. Could do with a slightly better UI (e.g. the inventory being a grid or a window rather than a single bar considering the number of items you end up lugging around) and more consistently implemented encyclopedia (of food; in theory, you can point it at anything food-related and get a description in the book or a comment from the protagonist, but many perfectly edible ingredients are completely dismissed as non-food, e.g. a rabbit).
Great game. Looking forward to the next episode.
OOO My God ... I enjoyed this game so MUCH ..the closes game to monkey island series ... but THE END WTFFF.... what king of end is this it is apsurd...
It's a decent point and click game for Curse of Monkey Island fans, which it's trying to emulate. That's not a bad thing. The game is funny, but nothing laugh out loud funny. I enjoyed the puzzles, and the story was different, even if it's a bit odd. But a couple of the reviewers complaining about the story weren't paying attention. It's not as bad as they think it is. The game took me two and a half hours to finish. For the sale price of 6 that I paid for it, that's adequate. Any price higher would be too high. The voice acting is decent except for Joyfess. His voice is a bit annoying, but you get used to it. They did an excellent job with the sound effects in the game.
But I wished they would have expanded on a few things. At one point, you have to figure out who sabotaged you, except it took me two seconds to figure that out. But you have to play along anyway and then be shocked when it happens. Joyfess didn't talk to enough people for it to be anyone else than who it was obviously going to be. You also don't talk to everyone in the game. There are two kids by a fountain I wanted to interact with, but you can't. Later you find a message in a bottle, which I'm pretty sure is from them. But even after finding the message, you still can't interact with them. It's not crucial to the game, but little details like that would flesh out the game more and make it longer.
It’s an excellent game.
A very nice point and click with loads of humour. Puzzles are not too easy or too difficult. Good voice-acting.
I’m looking forward to the sequel.
Bought the game for its obvious Monkey Island references. Graphics are nice, animations bearable, voice acting not too bad. It has voice acting, that's a serious plus nowadays. But the writing... Nothing makes sense. So there's this chef who invented a famous dish, wrote the recipe down, lost the sheet with the recipe, and now he can't cook the dish any more? Right at the beginning every single dialogue lets you scratch your head because logic is stretched to the max like in the above example. Will give it another chance but the first encounter made want to get a refund.
It's a nice game. Nothing exceptional, but it's not that bad either. I like its art style a lot. The puzzles are easy, but a few may require some thought. The dialogues are a bit funny from time to time. But the game includes only the first episode and I sincerely doubt we'll ever see the rest of the episodes. Additionally, the game is quite short. Still, the game is quite cheap, so I bought it to support the developers and I don't regret it at all, since I enjoyed it. Till next time, don't forget to point & click.
Very good but short
Really nice environments. It tickles my Monkey Island nerve. And I did have some good moments with it. Unfortunately, the negatives outweigh the positives.
Pros:
Great environments. Most puzzles are logical and satisfying. Amusing.
Cons:
*Completed the game in 2.8 hours, and I payed 12.50 £ for that....I'm sorry but that is just too little game for my money.
Potential spoiler:
* Some puzzles are a bit flawed. There was some ingredient I needed and I found something similar, which the character said would work since he was wasn't able to get the real one. Which I did not understand as I had not been presented with any info about that. It wasn't until later that I unlocked and got to a new area, that I found out why that was. And the method of unlocking this area was basically to ask the right person about the ingredient. But I din't ask anyone about it since the character had already found a replacement for it. So I was stuck for quite some time until I had to watch a walkthrough of the game that someone posted.
*Also, when I had just started the game, I didn't know the plot because I didn't read that much about the game. But the character mentioned something like "I might need that for my recipe". And I was like... what recipe???
A very nice and entertaining inventory-based adventure game, in the best tradition of the genre. Nice graphics, funny story, not too difficult, nor too easy, no silly QTE''s (they dont belong in REAL adventure games). A bit on the short side, but looking forward to ep. 2, hopefully on its way ?
I am a huge fan of point-and-click adventures and of Monkey Island games in particular (not so much of the Telltale Games' stab at it), so I was sure I was going to like this one. Alas, I wasn't able to.
The art style is great... and that's the only thing I was able to enjoy about the game. The writing is bad, the humor felt forced and never funny to me. Also, the game has nothing on the atmosphere of the Monkey Island games.
For a slightly lower price you can get The Secrets of Jesus (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1142230/The_Secrets_of_Jesus/) point-and-click adventure game. Despite having a more simplistic art and no voice-overs, it has much better writing, puzzles and overall story - and these things are the most important for a point-and-click adventure, in my opinion. It is also extremely funny. Oh, and it's a complete game (unlike this one).
I enjoyed the first chapter and am looking forward to the next episode. The puzzles are logical and I was able to figure them all out without the help of walkthroughs etc. I found the nods to the other adventure games charming but not overbearing. I love the art style and am looking forward to more. All point and click adventure fans should be happy with this one.
