This is more of a card-battler style of game than it is a mostly casual deck building game, though there are elements of selecting cards to boost your abilities in the games. It is an interesting mix of solitaire style card layout for you and your opponent, yet you must mix and match cards to create a poker hand in order to do deal damage. If there is a chest, you need to create the hand it asks for in order to open it an gain access to different types of cards; each type either does a different kind of damage or provides you with a different type of defence. There are a few levels to the cards, so you have stronger capabilities as the game progresses and the enemies get tougher to fight.
It is simple enough mechanically, though there is a little luck as it all depends on what cards are turned over and what cards the enemy will select. As with poker the higher scoring hands take more time and patience to set up, though being able to take unmatched cards from your opponent's board helps a little. The casual side of play drops off a little as you need to keep track of cards a little for when you are setting up for a hand, which may mean putting in a bit more thinking than your were wanting to do in a more laid back game.
Taking damage build up your 'rage' pool, another name for mana, which grants you the ability to cast any of the spells you have gained access to either though allies or acquiring the card. You gain these cards by winning battles or spending the limited silver you get at a merchant; it is good you can customise your combat to your play style somewhat, however the computer tends to be on the more aggressive side which means you can end up in a race to deal damage rather than bother defending.
The story is simple enough; you are an unnamed being who has no idea how they arrived in the area or why they are there, only they have a destiny to fulfil. Don't let the simplicity fool you, there has been a lot of effort to ground the story in history and has used the tale of Beowolf for inspiration. Gives the story some way to stand out from the rest of the casual games.
Visually a lot of thought has gone into the design of the map, characters and cut scenes in order to create a blizzard wrought land and yet have enough of a colour palette to distinguish all the elements from a bleak winter setting. It is mostly a 2D game, though there are some basic 3D models during the combat, which is where the charm of this game lies - I could leave the 3D models.
The sound choices are gorgeous and fit with the mystical vibe of the setting; they are mostly calming and ethereal, though are played on a loop when in the map. It can get a bit repetitive after a while, mostly during combat, where most of the game play takes place.
The repetitiveness is why I have given a thumbs down due to how much time is spent in combat and mostly making the same poker hands. As much as I liked this game, it is rather easy to want some variety after a while. I wish there was a neutral option as I am sure some people might no have as much of a problem with the repetitiveness as I did.
In addition, I am going to have to not recommend based on how much grinding you need to do in order to get some achievements. It doesn't feel like the right game to have grinding, though I do understand the game needs some way to have progression, so sits in a weird spot of not completely casual but a bit too casual to require the time investment you might need to get all the achievements.
I am done with this game. The computer is very aggressive. You can buy spells but event the basic ones are expensive. You can grind for more spells and silver but it such a slog and it gets really repetitive. I was able to get to the fourth pillar (the one with the lantern) and just couldn't beat it. I give up. There is no way to increase your health, which could have helped a bit with survival.
Overall, not recommended, computer is too aggressive, gameplay is boring, repetitive, and slow. Although, the poker gameplay is different but not implemented in a fun way.
Game is overly brutal and a relic of the pre-deck building craze we saw with Enter the Spire. It isn't a fun game.
I kept shelving and retrying this game over like 5 years, always forgetting why I stopped playing it before digging it out of the rubble of my steam library a year later and then getting frustrated, deinstalling it and repeating the cycle. Now, I am leaving a review so I can actually lay this game to rest properly and remember just why I stopped playing it.
Long story short: the RNG is unbearable and the AI is too unforgiving. This game essentially has you play a mix of solitaire and poker against an AI and, to spice things up a bit, you can use power cards as well to turn the tide. The problem is that the AI simply never ever lets you play any move that may be advantageous for you, as it constantly steals useful cards the moment it sees them. The reason this happens is that every "player" gets 3 moves in one turn, and thus the AI constantly ruins your plans the moment they seem to come to fruition.
That combined with the card appearance RNG just makes the game very frustrating. You are essentially fighting a battle on two fronts; on one front, you hope for RNG to give you the right cards to make good combinations with and that you can securely tuck away in a combination before the AI can steal it; on the other front, you fight an AI that always goes for the best available combinations anyway while ruining your day. It is a battle only won with a lot of luck and patience, but sadly, it is not very fun. While the presentation of the game is intriguing, it is simply not worth going through the struggle.
Extremely simplistic gameplay, unfortunately the skills and poker set gameplay mix poorly and in a way, not at all. While it's an interesting idea, all the elements are located at surface level, leaving no sense of deep strategy.
I really liked this game. It had a nice rpg feel about it, as well as having a very well thought out card game system that kept the game entertaining and challenging.
My only real negative about the game is that the game didn't really feel like it had a proper ending. You get a cutscene which shows you going to the place you have been hearing about during the quests, but then the credits roll. I could understand if there was a dlc or another game to follow on from this one, but sadly there isn't. It feels unfinished as a result.
Still, don't that put you off buying it, especially if it is on sale, as it is a good game and kept me entertained for over 12 hours.
The core combat of making poker hands to fight enemies is pretty fun. The game is very shallow and has a very lackluster story with choices that impact absolutely nothing.
Get it on a sale or from a bundle.
As a avid player of Match-3 games, and appreciator of the Puzzle Quest saga, I convinced myself to give Runespell: Overture a shot, intrigued by the fact you play with a standard deck of cards instead of coloured gems.
The first battles were interesting, the poker-like combos felt novel. Diving more deeply into the game, it got more depth with the addition of magic cards and sidekicks.
Unfortunately, it appeared that most of the magic cards are just copies of the same basic spell (unlike other games where fire, ice, lightning and poison have different tactical effects).
From that point, the battles felt too much similar to sustain interest, and the constant sight of these clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades turned the fantasy background into the trivial one your regular Solitaire.
These kind of games are supposed to be easy to develop on a reasonable budget, deliberately limiting fancy graphics to focus solely on gameplay depth. Sadly, this game is a living testimony of a team being too lazy or too tired to make a truly great game.
Maybe they lost faith in this game at some point. No wonder this happened to me too.
Fun card dueling game. Uses traditional poker cards / hands, along with special abilities. There's not a whole lot to it, but the gameplay is mildly entertaining. The story isn't very good, but I'll still recommend it if you can find it on sale.
Make sure you like the core poker-styled game mechanic before you buy because that (and the nice presentation) carry the game. If you like the gameplay, this would be a good game for you. If you're unsure or not especially enthused, there are other games that might suit you better.
Took me a couple of tries to finish the game; I stopped playing and restarted a couple times because I got bored with the game mechanic or early grinding for silver.
Not a very long game once you learn how to properly win games. The story is really like a prelude to the 'real story' which is never revealed. The ending is pretty lackluster. As far as I can tell, there is no reason to Continue+ (for achievements, it's better to just not do the last stage so don't have to unlock all the map again).
Almost all allies are either impractical or unnecessary. Hrodbrokk is a pretty good source of damage for the RP/AP it takes; Brin is usually a waste of a turn because you should be better off moving cards around for bigger damage and using the RP elsewhere.
Runespell is a combination of RPG, Solitaire and Poker, similar in nature to Puzzle Quest. You stack cards like in solitaire to form 5 card poker combos to attack your foes and cast spells. It's fairly simple to play an so is the presentation. The story is based on Norse Mythology and while it's somewhat thin it does has its twists and turns. I found the gameplay enjoyable for the most part and the game doesn't overstay its welcome. Unfortunately, as the Overture in the title says it feels like a first part of something bigger, a second game that may never come out. That didn't upset me but can frustrate some people who got more invested in the story.
Think Puzzle Quest, but instead of match 3 you play poker solitaire to fight your enemies.
It's fun if you're into this kind of thing. The story is cliched but well-written: I appreciate characters with a sense of cynicism. The art and sound are nice. Tutorials can be skipped when you replay the game.
Downsides: Mystic Box appears to fallen off the face of the earth. Technical settings do not save when you quit the game; I constantly have to hit Alt+Enter to resize my window and re-pick "click and click" (dragging is a pain) when the game starts up
Overall, I enjoy this game. I use this game to kill time or relax: it's not as mindless as a match 3 and it's a fun twist on the premise. I don't expect it to do much more than that.
It's like playing poker and classic RPG at the same time. Challenging gameplay and good spells to help you through dozens of quests. Strong allies to unlock with fantastic artwork will make you want to summon them again and again.
This game was a surprise! I was expecting something like Fairy Solitaire, but has much more the RPG feeling and the RPG elements. And on top of all, keeps my poker knowledge fresh:)
I can definetely recommend this game as a Casual, Relaxing, Adventure with nice visuals.
and for 1,80euro...it's a steal!
One of the best card based game I have ever played. And now it's a real bargain, you cannot have good enough reason to not buy it. ;-)
The core concept of this game is essentially solitare poker againt the AI. Matching varying combinations of cards will inflict damage against the AI (and AI to you). The damage will increase the better the combiation, from two of a kind to a royal flush. The game mixes things up by adding in spell cards which can be used to inflict status effects, heal, do elemental damage, etc. The additions of the spell cards keeps the battle fresh as certain enemies require specific cards to counter their abilities. Overall, this game is average to above-average. I recommend a purchase of this game during a sale.
If you like casual games and you like an RPG style twist, then this little game was executed very well. The concept of using a standard card game as a fighting system works very well actually. Solid little game, I like it quite well!
I got this as part of a bundle and really tried to make it work for me, but it was hard to escape the 'solitare with animations' feeling I got from the game. I'm sure a greater enthusiast for card games will find something they like in here, but I could not recommend it to a general audience.
Why don't they make more games like this?!
Simple card playing mechanic that's fun and addicting. Then you have a vaguely interesting storyline that your character has to make his way through.
If you like Puzzle Quest (1st one), you'll love this game!
Seriously, they need more games like this!
Puzzle Quest-like but with poker hands being constructed on the board and their relative ranks determining damage dealt when they're activated. There are spells, abilities and allies, of course, and a decent story, albeit perhaps slightly on the short side. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game and will likely go back for more despite having completed the campaign.
