If you love roguelike deckbuilders, Monster Train is an absolute gem that you shouldn’t miss. It takes the core elements that make the genre great—strategic deckbuilding, satisfying synergies, and high replayability—and elevates them with a unique multi-lane combat system that adds an extra layer of tactical depth.
The game’s core mechanic of defending a train with three ascending floors feels fresh and engaging, forcing you to think beyond just card value and consider positioning, timing, and unit survivability. Each clan offers a wildly different playstyle, and mixing two clans per run leads to endless possibilities. Whether you're stacking insane buffs on a single unit, spamming spells to obliterate enemies, or playing a long-game economy build, there’s always a new strategy to explore.
The presentation is also top-notch. The art style is vibrant and distinct, the UI is smooth and intuitive, and the music keeps the momentum going. And let’s talk about difficulty—this game knows how to challenge you! The Covenant system (which ramps up difficulty in layers) ensures that even seasoned deckbuilder veterans will have their hands full.
Simply put, Monster Train is one of the best roguelike deckbuilders out there, standing alongside the greats like Slay the Spire. If you enjoy deep, strategic gameplay with a high skill ceiling and near-infinite replayability, this is a must-play.
Monster Train is a deck-building game. It's following in the footsteps of other great games like Slay the Spire. As a result, I will be comparing this game to Slay the Spire a lot.
In Monster Train, you defend a train full of (you guessed it) monsters. You fight a series of battles, with each battle involving a bunch of minor enemies followed by a major (boss) enemy. In-between battles you do some deck construction using various stations. One run takes about 60 to 90 minutes.
I've gotten 85 hours of fun out of this game.
THE GOOD:
- Monster Train is a really fun card battler.
- The train level mechanic, where you have 4 different levels in your train, adds a lot of strategic depth and novelty.
- You can always refuse a new card or artifact, something I always wished I could do in Slay the Spire—which would force me to take cards I didn't want and then make it really hard to get rid of them.
- It's also easier to remove cards you don't want, often allowing you to craft the deck you want by the endgame.
- The game lets you know who the major bosses are at the very start of the run. This allows you to build your deck accordingly.
- Great variety of enemies, cards, and special abilities.
- Great learning curve, as new concepts are gradually introduced so you don't have to drink from a firehose of knowledge.
- Nice graphics and music.
THE BAD:
- There is no real story to the game. There's kind of the veneer of a story, but it doesn't really explain why you need to do multiple runs.
- Even with the better control over your deck than other games in the genre, you are still at the mercy of the random number generator. It can be frustrating to lose because you never found the cards you needed, or because of a terrible draw for an otherwise great deck.
- The game developers claim this game is a roguelike, but it's not really. You play to unlock new features, which is a good tutorial mechanic, but to be a roguelike the game should require you to learn by failing. I won on my second attempt.
THE UGLY:
- In this game the protagonists are the demons of Hell, and you actually fight against Heavenly angels. This doesn't bother me, but you might find it offensive.
- When using a mouse and dragging a card to play it, if you linger the game can automatically scroll up to a level above. This is a great way to ruin your battle by playing the card on the wrong level!
- The game enables you to ramp up the difficulty with a feature called the Covenant. This is ostensibly a good thing that gives the game some extra life and challenge. Unfortunately, in trying to find a variety of ways to increase the difficulty the game designer has mainly made the game more annoying. They add lots of junk cards to your deck and make it harder to remove those cards. Hence, rather than ending with a bang, the game kind of fizzled out with a whimper as I got increasingly frustrated and quit.
Just buy it, you pay more for beer and donuts in one week !!
I'll be honest. I didn't like it that much. Primarily because the game at higher difficults devolves into gigagbuffing one monster to solo the final boss. Still though learning the game was great.
The most glowing thing I can say about this game: you get to love these monsters so much it feels like a shame to say goodbye to them after a run.
The dev is such an a$$ by disabling progression when enabling mods
It's pretty fun! Nice music as well. Fairly deep game play.
amazing game
I played this roguelite cards battler on various platforms, gamepass pc ,xbox and steam, and its a great game. Fun.
For me the progression of the game is really good, while you play more you unlock fun other stuff. The combinations are a blast, you can make over the top OP cards. I like the sounds when the train is totaly full and your cards all packed with buffs, the sound is not beautiful, but catching, and I like the raw sound of the abilities clashing into each other.
Its cool and easy to play some rounds, make comobs and have fun.
Game is fun and well made, for sure worth your time
A solid addition to the card-battler genre! I just completed Covenant level 25 - time to see what the expansion has in store!
I stand by my early impressions that the UI clashes terribly in this game. For context, I've played and love Slay the Spire, and I THOUGHT I'd like Monster Train, but I thought it was kind of ugly...I admit I wasn't in the mood to give it a fair shake, and it is now starting to click with me. It's good, but not great, with tremendous replay value.
I don't even know what it is about this game, but somehow I just keep coming back to it for "just one more round".
I can't stop playing Monster Train. No, you don't get it, I CAN'T stop playing Monster Train. This is a cry for help.
Great evolutionary take on Slay the Spire mechanics.
High Quality Time Deleting Machine. I have hundreds of hours on mobile as well. Base game is good but I recommend getting Wurmkin DLC as well. Unfortunately, not nearly enough Steam Community additions and sorely needs additional characters, cards, and artifacts.
Game's amazing wish there was another DLC.
Multi-lane roguelike deckbuilder where you're not necessarily defending every lane, you just have to stop monsters climbing to the top at some point. There's tons of replayability as you choose 2 factions to combo with some choices for each faction to switch between.
Solid entry into what is perhaps my favorite genre. I'm having a lot of fun with this game.
Only downside for me is that the vibes feel a little off: the sound effects are sometimes disturbing, and it's a little weird to be on the side of hell, even if the monsters are pretty cute.
Fantastic deck building rogue lite card game.
Huge variations and play styles, combos and ways to stack buffs...
Progression feels good, art style and ambience entertaining.
Highly recommended!
Great fun deckbuilder that gives the player the opportunity to get very broken very quickly.
This is a good game for anyone who likes Roguelikes with deckbuilding
I’ve been a huge Yu-Gi-Oh! fan for years, so naturally, I jumped on Inscryption when it came out for the Switch. The experience was incredible—I genuinely thought nothing could top it. Then I tried Slay the Spire. Its deck-building mechanics completely blew me away, and I was sure I’d found the pinnacle of the genre.
But no! Enter Monster Train! The synergy between the different clans and the endless combinations took things to a whole new level. I loved it so much that I double-dipped, getting it on both Steam Deck and Switch. The Steam Deck version, hands down, is the best way to play it—perfect performance and absolutely stunning visuals on that screen. And while not many people talk about the music, it’s phenomenal. (Yes, it’s on Spotify, so do yourself a favor and check it out.)
Sadly, Monster Train is not available on Android, but iOS users are in luck
Lately, I’ve been obsessed with Vault of the Void. It’s got a lot to live up to, but I’m curious to see if it can dethrone Monster Train. Let’s see if it can climb to the top of my deck-builder rankings! Regardless, if you are like and just enjoy the battle mechanics of CBG without having to buy a bunch of extra cards due to "power creep," this is right up your alley!
A top tier deck builder.
I think about this quite a bit but I honestly like this game more than Slay the Spire and I love that game.
Great card Rogue-Like game. Reminds me of Slay the Spire. A must play for sure.
Slay the Spire + Pokemon = Monster Train
Amazing roguelike deckbuilder!! It really scratches that cardbattler itch left by Slay the Spire. Also here you have kind of Pokemon elements, where you have to collect and grow powerful monsters for your deck.
10/10

Awesome card battler with a ton of variety. Love that no matter how crap the item drops may be, there's always a way to get a crazy OP run once you know about enough mechanics of the game.
a very fun card game
has plenty of depth and many options to explore and unlock (also to make it much harder on yourself)
there's a neat backstory, but no need to engage with it
(no in-game package purchasing microtransaction stuff as far as I'm aware)
My most favorite Deckbuilding Roguelike ever and a very interesting blend of deckbuilding, turn based tower defense, auto battler, and so on.
Fun graphics, very good strategic depth, rewarding unlocks, interesting enemies.
What I love most about the game is that it throws many challenging fights and enemies at you, but also provides you with enough strategic freedom to solve them.
Fantastic!
Get the DLC. It's worth it!
If you like StS you'll most likely enjoy Monster Train, doesn't quite have the same atmosphere though.
It's not like this is a bad game by any means, the game is quite polished and has a very interesting concept.
So why do I not recommend it?
That's because the gameplay feels kinda off in a lot of places, making the overall experience feel quite unsatisfying. To give a quick overview of how a run goes without getting into details: You select a primary and allied clan to play with, determining your starting cards, and then the game is a loop of choosing 1 of 2 paths to use all shops, events, etc... on that path, fight a group of enemies in an encounter and repeat until you beat the final boss. An encounter sees wave after wave of enemies start on the bottom floor and make their way up the train to attack your core.
1. Upgrades are too impactful. As an example, one of the weakest upgrades for spells is "+10 spellpower", if you apply this to a damaging spell, it causes that spell to do 10 extra damage. The "problem" is that your starting damaging spells will likely be something like "deal 2 damage", so this "weak" upgrade straight up makes that spell 6 times as powerful. These big and easy powerspikes result in making getting stronger feel pretty unsatisfying. Other games in the roguelike genre, typically have upgrades be more gradual, like slay the spire for example, where you can upgrade a 5-damage strike into an 8-damage strike+.
2. Enemies jump in strength too quickly. This goes hand-in-hand with the 1st point, because the problem isn't that enemies outscale you, the problem is that they need to get big jumps in strength in order to keep up with your uprades, but this does very quickly invalidate your non-upgraded cards. overall it contributes to this unsatisfying feel the game has. Also, within a wave itself enemies differ wildly, one enemy will have 95 health, and the enemy right behind them will have 4, the idea is that the lower health enemies are easy to kill, but hard to reach, so it does make sense from a balancing pov, yet it still contributes to this unsatisfying feeling I've been talking about.
3. Enemies move too quickly. Each round, every ally and enemy on each floor will attack once, and then the enemies move up to the next floor, if they reach the 4th floor, they'll start damaging your core. So your goal is to build a defense that's able to kill each wave of enemies before they reach the top. My problem however, is that combat feels way too short, each ally will only get 1 attack round on each enemy wave, and vice versa, this again isn't a problem from a balancing perspective, but it ends up feeling unsatisfying.
Luckily, the final boss of each encounter does stay on their current floor until all your troops or they are defeated. Getting to test your defenses in a fight to the death is definitely the highlight of each encounter, but it also makes me wish that the rest of the encounter (which takes up the majority of your time), was more like it.
I don't think the game has actual balancing issues, yet every time I win a run, it felt unsatisfyingly easy, and every time I lost a run, it just felt unavoidable.
A super fun roguelite-deckbuilder that isn't afraid to occasionally let players become OP and wreck its balance.
The 5 races of the base game are pretty compelling (as are their champions), and make for interesting synergies in combination with the secondary race.
Criticisms
- Champion upgrades could be better balanced, there's plenty of upgrades that are detrimental to get to level 3, so the missing data in the compendium is just gonna bug me forever.
- The random button could be better designed to preview which is chosen, so as to allow reshuffling, as not all secondary race cards synergize with certain primary races. Had to use external random generators instead, which isn't ideal.
[*] Didn't have to make every unit moan when you they get hit, on ultra-speed it sounds unnecessarily sexual.
Incredibly underrated deckbuilder rougelite. I would definitely recommend if you enjoy Slay the Spire.
Super fun and addicting. It does remind me of Slay the Spire but has a lot of nice differences that keep it fun time after time. Even with the OP DLC faction, it still isn't a breeze every time. Definitely recommend if you like Slay the Spire.
More variety than Slay The Spire, more experimentation is encouraged, less RNG and overall less punishing of a time each run. Average runs lasts about an hour or so and it fits great in small 1 hour play sessions!
The flexibility on offer here means the game is less tightly balanced than StS but overall that is a positive rather than a negative in this genre.
Very good game, the synergy between the cards, and how you place your monsters can literally alter the course of the battle.
Really like the game and highly recommend it for every roguelike deckbuilder fan.
If there's something to criticise, from my perspective the game is very grindy for a strategy game. I wish I wouldn't have to spend so much time to unlock the different clans, but rather, playing them and learning how to use their decks.
*ROG Ally certified*
While the hours played may look small, I played it on Xbox 1s in 2020, then eventually got it on Nintendo Switch when it was ported in 2021 as I wanted it portable…,then in 2022 I saw it on the App Store and since I take my iPhone with me everywhere, i couldn’t resist and it wasn’t expensive.
Fast forward to 2023 and I bought it on Steam. I heard about mods, and knowing I can play portable with my ROG Ally even just in the lounge while watching TV made it easy to repurchase it, especially since it goes on sale often.
Monster Train was the game that got me buying every roguelike deck builders. No regrets.
I am extremely glad I decided to try this on gamepass. It was just a random download to “try” and probably delete since it was part of the available games.
I would have overlooked this game based on the pics not thinking it would be for me, but boy was I wrong. I had more fun in this than StS. I love how it blends in a form of tower defence feeling, the simplicity of choosing left or right but actually has complexity to choices and planning ahead based on what you will face and a whole lots of variety.
I would play this game until sunrise. Roguebook also had me addicted playing until sunrise. Bad habit, and don’t recommend doing that…but these games have that one more go approach and the progression system is just awesome. No run ever feels wasted.
Game is fun, but there's a bug which freezes your PC that's been out for 4 years they haven't fixed.
Not worth giving them money if they haven't tried to fix a bug so awful you have to ctl+alt+del out of it.
My favorite game in the Roguelike Deckbuilder genre - Monster Train not only has the gameplay to keep me satisfied, but it has a much more robust and colorful setting, soundtrack, cards, bosses, and choices than most of its competitors.
I find Slay the Spire to be drab and depressing after a while. Monster Train keeps me engaged and happy to go another round!
Awesome game. Quite unique too, many similar games to 'slay the spire' but this one is different. It's short in terms of winning the campaign, but in reality to complete all achievements, play with all factions, and challenge yourself it's quite good in length. I wish they add extra content though, like a new mode with challenges updated monthly, or has new battles monthly etc. Maybe connect other players and make a co-op mode, each player protecting a floor to protect your clan's empire. This game is very promising to expand and become bigger in my opinion, up to devs
If you've played StS and other card battler roguelikes, you know the drill. Difficulty-wise the base game seems much easier than StS, although the DLC addition adds considerable difficulty. There is also a covenant system with 25 ranks similar to the ascension system in StS.
The main gimmick here is the addition of floors. Enemies spawn on the first floor each turn and any that survive until the end of the turn move up to the next floor. There are 3 floors where you may play spells and summon defenders. Enemies who reach the 4th floor will be able to attack your Pyre (health pool) directly. When the Pyre is destroyed the game is over.
Floors add several dynamics to the gameplay. Floors have a certain amount of space to deploy units and each unit has a value determining how much space it requires. You are also able to place units on whichever floor(s) you like and some cards are able to move units from one floor to another.
The flow of the game also differs from the StS formula in that every battle you encounter on the map has a boss. The early rounds consist of waves of lesser enemies. After so many rounds there will be a single round where no enemies spawn, giving you a turn to prepare for the boss battle.
Boss combat differs from regular combat because of an effect called relentless. When a boss enters a floor, you will be able to play cards from your hand before ending your turn. After that point combat between the boss and any existing units will continue until either the boss is defeated or all units existing on that floor are destroyed. At which point the boss destroys that floor and moves on to the next. You will then have an opportunity to play your hand before combat resumes in this fashion. The floor mechanics along with the relentless effect create opportunities for strategies that don't really exist in other games of this type.
In terms of the deckbuilding elements, the game gives you a satisfying amount of power upgrades and control over your deck. It isn't terribly stingy about card removal and you're able to fairly reliably upgrade cards to mitigate weaknesses and make them more suitable to your deck. The overall effect is less punishing and less "RNG" than StS. There are also some pretty wild synergies that make a good match to how ridiculous some of the bosses can be!
All in all, if you like StS and other games in this genre you're almost certainly going to like this game. It's easily one of the best in the genre without feeling like a copy.
Deep gameplay and strategy, lots of reason for replay and conquering challenges.
Pros: Innovative deck-building with tower defense, deep strategy, high replay value, stylish aesthetics.
Cons: Steep learning curve, some content locked behind DLC.
Overall: A standout roguelike with rich gameplay for strategy enthusiasts. 8/10
Really only second to slay the spire. This is an easier game than Slay though.
Really good deckbuilder.
A solid entry in the deck builder genre. I really enjoy the factions and mixing them together to create unique combos. It helps keep the game fresh feeling and is fun to find good combos between the factions
Out of the Deckbuilder Roguelikes out there, AKA "Slay the Spire" clones, I think this one is by far the best. Surpassing Slay the Spire and IMHO better than Balatro too.
What makes this game really stand out is a very cool cast of creatures and characters represented in cards, all of which have flavor text that serve to paint a picture of the characters and the world.
A fun as fuck joyride. The strategy of mixing up monsters and spells alongside unlocking new cards makes for so much damn fun. Cannot recommend enough!
Still holds up rather well. It kind of lives in the shadow of slay the spire, but it's rather good in its own right, and is a delightful deckbuilder.
Great game. Loved Slay the Spire and the tower defense aspect of Monster Train makes it even more fun in certain ways.
