It's insane that it's 2025 and this doesn't allow in-game saves vs the AI when a game takes about an hour to play. Moreover, only meaningless exhibition games allow you to play without the timer.
Grown humans have dogs, wives, children, calls from work, and friends who call and say they're headed to the pub and you should come along.
So take your downvote, incel developers, and continue to never sell the game except at a steep discount. There's a bunch of DLC I'd even buy if the game was playable for a functioning adult.
The game sucks worse in every aspect than its predecessors. It looks worse and the amount of content in the game is behind pay walls, not skins but factions you can play and they want you to keep playing for what there isn't even any real cool looking items the game is frankly disgusting. Its agonising playing against AI as they have loaded dice and it takes so long for it to make a move.
Everything you do in this game is 50/50, either it works or it doesnt. Change my mind
I got this on sale for $15 and even playing offline it's good value for that - really good looking, responsive, well made version of the tabletop game, with plenty of included teams. I think the extra teams are a bit pricey at $10 each, but if they had a sale I'd happily buy more. Not perfect but I think it's much improved from what I've read about the launch.
my game is not working. it will not load now. I do not recommend
Was not a good game at the start. It is now! It still needs work to be a great game but the developers have listened to the community and are actively improving the game
Absolut unbelivble bad AI
with it stalking the game out for simply no reason
The game monetization is another extrem example for how ill willed this all is
i can NOT recoment this at all
The AI is incredibly slow. You have 2 min turn timer for each turn, and after that there is a pool of 7.5 mins extra time you can spend during the whole game. AI goes over the 2 min turn time so frequently that it has spent up the full extra 7.5 min pool several times. As the AI uses the max time allowed, you objectively *can't* spend more time on your turns than you do on waiting the AI, so you *will* spend most of your single player time just waiting for the AI to make a move.
Does that at least mean the AI is great? No. On a very basic level, it is unfinished. Some parts of the game don't seem to have been implemented. If the kick-off roll gives AI the chance to quick snap or blitz, it never uses it. It will sometimes win the coin toss and then give you the option to go first, in situations where it really shouldn't. It doesn't take into account the half-time turn limits, so if it's losing on a last turn it won't go for an "improbable but possible" way to score points but rather builds a cage around its ball carrier to defend it against your non-existent next turn. And every once in a while the AI ball carrier randomly leaves the safety of its team and runs alone somewhere to be easily blitzed.
Well, if the single player isn't great, maybe the multiplayer is? Hard to say. There's a million different options for it. There is an official season ladder, but I gave up after it didn't find me a match. Seeing that there are 25 teams on the list, it might be dead? Might be enough players to find matches at the right time of the day. (EDIT: It's not just 25 teams, turns out their "top 100" list just isn't top 100, it's "top 100 that have reached elo 2000" so it currently show 29 players. It is playbable, even if the long matchmaking times and issue about not being able to find players at certain times of day are real)
The main multiplayer game mode seems to be "Norsca Arena" which is "Try to win 7 matches, run ends on 2nd defeat". To enroll to it, you build a custom team that follows a set of rules (non-standard starting value + you can buy extra skills, some star players are banned, etc.). All of this seems fun! The thing is, there is no UI support for this.
You first need to Norsca Arena description, screenshot the rules (which are different for each tier of teams), then go to another place in the menus to build a custom team, build one that follows all the rules (with no indication of whether you're doing it right nor not), and then enroll it. If you enroll a team that didn't use all of its allowed extras, you don't get any warnings, you just will get slaughtered in the run. Another feature that is clearly just unfinished.
I really want to like this because I want a good Blood Bowl implementation with modern rules. And if you want to play against your friends online, this is probably a perfectly good tool for that. But for everything else, I'm seriously considering to check if FUMBBL is still alive.
Worst interface of any port of BB to date, ill go back to fumble. The devs so worried about pleasing console players they screwed up simple PC controls and made it over complicated to do simple tasks like pass, hand off, blitz. Missing KEY CLASSIC BB races like Chaos dwarves, And many undead options, over 18 (super Exaggerating) diffrent versions of Orcs. I played through all the campaign as well as some league games and this is truley the WORST BB yet in favor of silly cinematics.
I've played all three versions of the game and the current state of BB3 development makes it the clear winner
This game has finally gotten to the point where I can recommend it as a successor to Blood Bowl 2 that's using the current tabletop rules.
I still think BB2 looks nicer in certain aspects since I'm not a fan of the darker and duller lighting of BB3, but the latter does however feature much higher quality models, textures and animations based on the tabletop models. There's still a lot to improve, especially regarding the AI, but if you do enjoy Blood Bowl this is now the best way to experience the game digitally versus other coaches.
Blood Bowl has been one of my favorite tabletop games of all time and BB3 is a faithful adaptation.
It occupies an interesting spot in gaming because its gameplay intersects high skill and high luck. Success is determined by positioning, risk management and a developing an effective roster. I absolutely love it. BB3 had a rocky launch but they have steadily been improving the game and adding content every few months.
The updated ruleset is more balanced from the old ruleset of BB2 and the official ladder it way more balanced with skill ranking and team value limits.
The single player is serviceable in demonstrating the basics and selling the theme of the game. However the AI is pretty bad and doesn't reflect even a novice player's skill level. Blood Bowl is such a nuanced and deep game, I can't imagine the AI would ever be as sophisticated.
The game is at it's best against other players anyway, so lace up your boots and start bashing skulls!
It is so sad and I cannot recommend to purchase it for PvE Players.
When you host a league and add some NPCs, they do not level up after a match against an NPC (NPC vs NPC). All they get is some experience, but they dont use it, Its always a 1-0 or 0-1 result. They just receive Money when a player plays against them and only use and level AFTER the match.
That results into a Players team with 1,8m points against an NPC with 1m points.
Bloodbowl 2 had a working System, what happend?
I would buy every DLC if that thing is fixed, but for now? AllI know is, I never buy any Cyanide Studio game again until its getting fixed.
AI Ladder sucks
AI wont level their units befor they play agains you and they dont earn money vs other NPC Teams......
NPC vs NPC Team always 1-0
Please Fix!
They have done a lot with this game. They listen and you can ignore some quirky bugs after most patches.
my favourite game i also play tabletop if you are interested in getting into blood bowl this is the place to start
Massively improved from the original release, I can recommend Blood Bowl 3.
Pros: Easy to get a match. True to the board game rules. Ever-expanding content. Great (board) game that's had 4 decades of development, (but that also means some of us have been playing for that long).
Cons: WTF was with the release? Untrustworthy developer. It's as if the UI was designed by hamsters working for Chrysler in 1986. No single-player mode worthy of the name.
Pointers: If you're new to Blood Bowl, you're going to lose... a lot. You'll think it's your dice. It's not your dice. Watch AndyDavo on YouTube to pick up some pointers.
There's literally no primer on the controls. This is to help you through that unbelievably dumb fact:
Left click to select a player. Right click (sometimes twice) to cancel an action.
The hot keys are on the lower left of the screen.
Hold left-click over the active player to bring up the "skill wheel." You'll need this to "Jump up" or "Stab," etc.
Sometimes, you'll have to answer a contextual question on skill use, Apothecary, whatever. That'll be on a strangely invisible wheel in the middle of your screen, with oddly tiny, non-intuitive symbology. Want to reroll your dice? It's that super-duper tiny die with a red arrow on it that pops up way below the huge "accept this roll" die.
Hamsters. Chrysler. 1986. Think "K-Car." I know 50 people who could design a better UI in an afternoon for like $500. There are indie devs who could do it while in a dream-like state while fading to sleep after an all-nighter in Vegas. I have a 10-year-old who, and I mean this literally, can do better.
All that said, the game is now worth it, and great fun. If you're new here, don't take it personally when you lose. You're going to lose, and lose a lot. Blood Bowl teaches certain lessons about chaos and responding to the game state you have, not the game state you want or you wish you had. It will *destroy* your systematic approach, so you had better learn to think on your feet (while also having a systematic approach). The good news? There seem to be a lot of relatively inexperienced coaches in Ladder right now.
There's some DLC you can earn/buy in-game. The main thing is expansion teams, which are reasonably priced, given that they often have special rules that need to be implemented. If you're new, you don't need any of that. Spend a year playing Orks and Dwarfs, my foddery friends.
You'll get better.
game is busted developers know it and refuse to fix it on the premise that everything is ok.. the dice rollers is absolutely broken tho its claimed it is working as intended and developers openly ignore the community with comments like if you want somthing show us with your wallet... well here is me showing you bade review and and lost customer along with an uninstall.
Currently with how the development is going,I still cannot recommend the game. There's a lot of missing animations, the UI is horrible and the AI is still very bad! The sound design is not always working properly and there's a lot of issues server side-wise.
I am currently sitting on a 168 hours ban from official ladder because the Devs cannot fix their bugs and I end up bugged where I cannot move my team and have no choice but to concede.
Ontop of that,I have been rage banned by a dev for no reason from the BB3 forums, because I made a post asking for the devs to stop the extra time exploitation from raging players who may choose to not do anything for 7 mins and 30 seconds on purpose because either they are getting bad dice or are just overall salty. Asking this to be fixed so it can't be exploited or used for griefing,I was banned.
Therefore I will leave this negative review.
Finally decided to try the game after a year or so of updates. Nope, still worse than BB2.
UI weird and unintuitive.
Half the roster is locked behind micro-transactions.
Single player is nearly unplayable. AI takes ~5 minutes to play, and poorly.
went into this wanting to play some solo experience. What i realized is this game favors mainly Online play. I can play a campaign and thats cool but, I also would like to customize my teams armor as well as acquire points to unlock cosmetics. Playing in the Offline mode basically strips most all of this and just gives you a story mode with stupid AI. So i dont recommend this game for solo players. But if you wanna play against people. you have more options.
Saw reviews saying the game is better now and they basically fixed it. Buy bloodbowl 2. It's actually finished, and you can get very similar content for a far, far more reasonable price.
Another review said " Since the release (Feb 2023) a lot of upgrades were made. Now it's very enjoiable. PLAY THIS IF YOU LIKED BLOODBOWL 2"
That's almost 2 years as of the time of writing this. You should not get this if you liked bloodbowl 2. You should play bloodbowl 2. Anyone who says this is the best in the series is wilfully misleading you.
Plenty of issues, but a big one is the AI. It's not just stupid, which it is, but it seems to be programmed to wait until its turn time has run out, and like clockwork, the moment it hits 0 it starts to make moves. wouldn't be a completely terrible experience, except their turn doesn't end because they still have a pool of time to keep their turn going, which is 7 minutes 30. So much time is wasted just for the AI to make a move.
Surprisingly it was fine, until I cleared the tutorial and my first match, then spent time making a team. After that, AI issues kicked in. I crossed the period of being able to refund it by that point. It's like it was designed to look like it works initially.
Got bitten by the cash shop twice. Bought Goblins because that just what I like to play, using warpstone, the in game currency, because gone are the days where you could just buy DLC without strings, and of course it's designed so that you always have more premium currency than you need. Right afterwards, I was on the main store page and there's a deal hidden away to get both stunty teams for a reduced price, which would actually have been for an amount that didn't require me to buy more than I needed. It didn't make any effort to tell me about that deal, so Well done, you got cash out of me.
Secondly, I saw the norse team was out, and you could get it with the game pass. Fair amount of cool stuff to get on there, and it unlocked the norse team to play, seemed like a relatively good deal. What I didn't realise (and once again the game made no effort to tell me), is that the norse team was also just free as part of the basic free pass if you completed it. So well done, you got more money out of me.
Massive extra kick in the teeth that when I come to write this, the game is on sale. And I can't refund it for the better price. That's just bad luck, but it really just adds to the sting of how I've been fleeced so far.
The UI is clunky, reads very poorly, and it results in misclicks, which is echoed by other reviews. If you don't want that issue, you should play bloodbowl 2.
It all just really smells of laziness. Voice lines and sound effects are torn directly from bloodbowl 2, with some impact sounds actually made worse in this game from the previous installation. I'm not sure what they actually put any time into developing that anyone would want.
When you first start the game, there is zero customisation beyond simple colours, armour patterns, and team emblems. No pitches, coaches, cheerleaders. Minor gripe, as it seems these are unlocked over time with player level, and are free, but all players of the same type will be entirely identical to begin with.
Playing offline is just not there, made particularly bad by the AI. There's a short campaign, but if you just wanted an endless league to play in and have your team part of it, that's not there. You should get bloodbowl 2 if you want that. It has been mentioned that an endless league is on its way, but with the AI the way it is, that just sounds painful. I realise that this is really a multiplayer game, but there are far too many people defending the lack of single player because it's not "The way to play". Don't make excuses for them. They've had almost 2 years.
2 years of development post release is way too long to wait for it to still not be finished. This game doesn't deserve you paying for it. I'll keep playing it, becuase I've already sunk cost into it, and I have to make sure I get my moneys worth(?), but I am telling you, get bloodbowl 2, you'll have a good time, there's plenty more fun to be had there at this point time. If it gets better, I'll update the review. I'll also add anything else that I find here as well, more out of pettiness than anything else, but I'm just never buying another Cyanide product again. Considering the way they handle most things that are handed to them for development, their name is a bit on the nose.
A lot of work has gone into Blood Bowl 3 since launch. Having played 1, 2 and 3 I can honestly say that at present this is the most supported the official Blood Bowl game has been.
The release of this game was an absolute show. Must have been embarrassing for everyone involved.
To be fair, Its good now and improving all the time. You can still grind on the ladder if you want but you can also make proper Naf teams and play the way you want to.
So glad we got there in the end!
As someone who has wanted there to be a decent Blood Bowl game forever I keep getting suckered into the same BAD business practices and BAD service development. This game requires permanent online connection and Cyanide CANNOT reliably keep their servers running. There is an offline mode that it will revert to as a result. But nothing you've done in game until that point will be saved. So enjoy creating a brand new team to play against the AI with loaded dice.
As for the game itself. Somehow it is worse in every aspect than its predecessors. It runs worse. It looks worse and the amount of content in base game is frankly disgusting.
Fix your servers or make it offline. This is not acceptable.
I bought pre-order and was extremly disappointed. But now we are back on track, admin tools are there, new teams are comming, bugs are very rare. More than 500 hours spent.
Love the fact that devs team is listening to community and is growing fetures to support online privet leagues. There is plenty of ways to play and enjoy the game.
An great way to discover the completely unhinged sport that is Bloodbowl !
This is perfect to discover the tabletop game (same rules) with no limits of time, space or materials
There are a lot of teams to discover, strategies to experiment and opponents to leave in the dust !
The development team has been really active making sure the game is in the best shape possible and I can't wait to play the next Bloodbowl Teams !
-The game has had a good cadence of new content; teams, unique star players and game modes.
-The play is smooth and probably a bit faster than previous versions.
-Match making has been faster than is previous versions as well.
I see myself coming back to this game for years to come both for the exciting game play that BB has always provided but also as it grows it a better game with every season.
Blood Bowl 3 is a faithful recreation of the 2020 Tabletop version of the game. If you love the tabletop game, you will love this game as well.
Newer players may find the random dice rolls and unbalanced teams frustrating at first - but that is the beauty of the game. Anyone can beat anyone with a bit of luck, but you will notice the better players tend to win more often than not.
It is a very challenging game at first, but also very rewarding once you get better at it - mixing elements of fantasy, sports, statistics, probability and good old 80's Games Work humor. You will not regret giving this game a chance.
As a beginner tabletop player at first, BB3 was my go-to to learn and get acquinted with the basics, the different teams and strategies.
However, I need to make a disclaimer here, all of this is by playing online against human opponents.
AI is still not optimized and I would not recommend it for learning purposes ! But the devs are working on it, as they are working on a lot of stuff to make the game more enjoyable.
Each season brings new teams and it seriously becomes better and better. It's an amazing game and this PC version is slowly making it really really cool !!
As a person that has been in the Warhammer hobby for 20 years and having Blood Bowl as my main game for most of those years, I appreciate having the opportunity to play the setting as an online version and keep in touch with friends. I know there are other possibilities, but they either aren't as immersive, good looking or take too long to set up (TTS). I like the new system of Bloodpass and appreciate there is no pay-to-win. The game has been getting better since launch and I hope more people drop in and give it a try. I know turned based strategy games are an acquired taste, but this is as good as it gets for fantasy football! Praise Nuffle!
I left a review when BB3 first came out and it was still the game I loved for over 40 years but it was buggy and a mess. my review back then said as much. Today the game is much better, nearly all of the bugs are gone and its fun again.
The Ai is still awful and so single player games have a very limited appeal, but where this game really shines is playing multiplayer.
If youre new to the game and thinking of trying it out, id recommend it now, learn how to play and then immediately move to an offical multiplayer league and then find a private player run league and once youre part of a league community thats where the game will truly shine.
It's good!
If you want to play Ladder, get this one. Most BB2 ladder players have switched to BB3.
If you want to play in a League with friends and you don't mind the 2016 rules, get Blood Bowl 2. You'll get more teams for less money and the league tools are fully developed.
If you want to play only against AI, get BB2. The AI is getting better in this one, but it's still pretty dumb and extremely easy to defeat.
At launch, it needed a lot of work, but now is a awesome and sturdy experience for the blood bowl community. Fun and with a growing community and competition, my favourite game!!! Nuffle, hace mercy o me!
With the latest patch (season 6) the interface has been upgraded just enough for me to finally want to recommend it.
While it was great before already, it was still a bit rough on the edges for a full recommendation, but now it's good.
Visuals are pretty good, rules compliance is almost perfect, admin tools are good (though the UI of these tools is still meh), interface is improving and quite good now.
In terms of useability/bugs, it's leagues above release and while a random bug might pop by, the devs listen and fix stuff pretty regularly/fast.
The only issues I have with the game are independant from the devs/publisher but more in the tabletop rules the game is based on.
Good game, would recommend (but buy the rulebook. It's also available in digital on games workshop's website)
Great game, More teams added with each season. Rules tend to be up to date with Tabletop rules.
The game had a rough launch but the developers have stood by it and they continue to develop content. 20 teams released so far, hopefully the remaining teams are on the way together with more quality of life features. Will continue to play this game for years to come.
If you like blood bowl and want a competitive environment to train this is now the game to do so.
The release two years ago was atrocious but the developers kept working on the game and fixed most of the glaring issues.
The competitive community is healing and stronger than ever.
There's still the issue of single player mode not working as intended but developers are now prioritising it and should be solved in 3 months time
If you pick the game up I highly incentivise to get on discord and seek the community.
Yes. After many many years we can finally say that the game is at the state it deserves. A proper Blood Bowl game. I am having fun, no frustrations and all the problems I used to have seem to have been vanished. It is ok to join now fellow Blood Bowler. Come and join us.
The game is in much better shape than it was at the beginning. Arena is what I missed in BB on PC. There are still some shortcomings, but I'm having a great time and I can't wait for the rest of the teams and the development of Arena mode :)
I've been playing Blood Bowl since its release in 1991, so I know what to expect. I've also played the other two Blood Bowl games.
After Blood Bowl II, I had hoped that the developers would address the absurd dice results of the AI.
There is certainly no real AI built in, but the new Buzz Words help selling games.
An AI behaves differently, learns, adapts. Blood Bowl III doesn't do that.
If you're looking for a Blood Bowl game in which the AI always makes all the rolls, even against all mathematical possibilities, then this is the game for you.
If not, stay away from this game and its high price.
Blood Bowl III is a game with great graphics.
But this algorithm is a disaster and takes all the fun out of the game.
Why am I creating an overcount situation with my players in the game?
So I can roll 2 or more dice. The game doesn't need that.
Its simply against all odds and possibilities
I am sorry devs: You can do better
I have been playing Blood Bowl since 1992 (ie, pre-3rd ed). So I knew what to expect. Blood Bowl is turn-based gameplay and, by modern standards, it is incredibly rules-heavy.
I know all that. But this is -without a doubt- the worst iteration of the game ever made.
The game has been out for close to two years and it still isn't finished. In this time, they have managed to squeeze out DLC most months to squeeze more money from dedicated players, and yet they have not got around to finishing the actual game.
The single player mode simply DOES NOT WORK. The Ai - such as it is - fails to complete its moves and runs down its timer virtually every turn without completing any actions. When it does deem it worthy to move players, it invariably runs them far away from the action, allowing you to walk by them unchallenged.
Now, you can say that BB is a multiplayer game. But the single player mode is required to learn the UI and inputs - at the VERY LEAST. But there is absolutely no reason for single mode to be as absent as it is here. The game, as sold today, is unfinished and, after 22 months on the shelves, appears highly unlikely to ever be completed.
BB3 is a massive UI own goal compared to all previous versions. The controls are unresponsive and frequently result in mis-clicks. The players are far to large and obscure other models - again leading to misplays. The camera mobility is incredibly limited and unhelpful. These are just basic things that shouldn't exist past the first round of open beta testing.
There's also a bizarre (but only anecdotal) appearance that the Random Number Generator is skewed-low the whole time. In a game where rolling a natural 1 translates to a catastrophic failure, this weird, seemingly-scripted RNG just makes playing the game a miserable experience. I have honestly never seen the string of abysmal dice rolls in IRL TT Blood Bowl, FUMBBL, or in BB1, DB, BB2, that I habitually see in Blood Bowl 3 (first-hand, and while watching multiple streamers). It is as though the game is scripted to make gameplay a misery, while setting all players on a grind treadmill to snatch free versions of the overpriced pixels sold through the in-game shop.
I have loved Blood Bowl for 32 years. I still love Blood Bowl. And I just uninstalled this game with less than ten hours on the clock.
To the developers: I am embarrassed for you.
REFUNDED.
Great Game
Not terrible.
I've had to say, on balance, I would not recommend this game. This is especially true if you want to play single player. The AI is awful. Sometimes it will just run the wrong way, move the ball carrier INTO trouble, or ignore your ball carrier entirely. This is compounded by the AI taking ages to decide to do these things. Often I'm just left staring at my screen, waiting.
However... Online play negates the AI issues. Human players with the latest ruleset for BB can be fun! You can expect to go up against some good players with a high rank as the game has been out for a while.
My final note would be in regards to the store. The in game purchases are just a joke. You can grind or buy Warpstone to unlock teams and cosmetics. This was the biggest FU of them all. I will refuse to spend any cash to get the teams and just grind it out. Luckily I got the game at a massive discount.
I play games offline, I prefer it that way. BB3 gives you that option... but only as far as creating a team and playing in the first round of a 'Campaign'. After that first match you cannot advance to play the second.
It's a lot of money for a game that only lets you play one game in a league, which is probably what many players are looking to do.
Game uses in game currency like it's a free to play mobile game. And it's only sold at the in game store so you can never get a steam sale on it. It is a pay to play game in the worst way. Do NOT recommend.
What is there to say? Its Blood Bowl! Faithful conversion of the table top game to the Digital Environment
Abysmal for single player.
AI will often sit around doing nothing for each turn's time allocation, until it starts ticking into the over time. Half the games I've played against the AI have been "won" by the AI running out of time and conceding.
