Lite point and click with decent graphics. Perfect for winding your brain down after a long day of adulting.
Of Steam's recent HOG 'Bundel', Elements is better than average in story and execution. Faint praise, indeed, but the game isn't bad.
Elements makes heavy use of a Match-3 minigame. I found the thing mildly entertaining but you need to match-3 almost every time you click on something. Even if your intelligence is as limited as my own, you may be overcome with tedium every now and again. Thank goodness skipping is an option.
Game mechanics are not always clear but I managed to figure things out before suffering too much hair loss.
I freaking HATE the constellation minigame. Fortunately, there is just the one.
Some philosophical questions raised by Elements:
- Why would a fisherman wait for a princess to come along and repair his boat?
- Why does a clarinet look so much like a flute?
HOG 'Bundel' Rant
I am so sorry that I purchased that miserable bundle full of hot garbage. I was expecting a curated bundle of quality HOGs. The misspelled title should have relieved me of that foolish expectation.
Still, there are one or two games in the entire mess that aren't bad. The Far Kingdoms: Elements is one of them.
Hmm... This game is kinda short, huh? I mean most of my time was spent playing Match-3 and getting the parts I need to drop to the bottom... Get stuck in corners I can't get them out of... Woo?
So this is a Very Easy setting H.O.G. + Try your luck Match-3 (95% of the game)... It's not strange, as the previous two games WERE Match-3 only.
If you are used to smooth animations of newer games... You wont find that here. Not that you need great graphics to have fun anyway.
The enemy is back and she casts a curse on the Kingdom... You/MC/The Heroine wakes up and has to help/save everyone's ass. The enemy NEVER comes back into play... She just left an item behind and was like "f it! I will return in the next game."
It was also funny how the Floating Islands were under attack, but that guy was like... "Hey, I can't find my chameleon...? Help?" I wanted to ask him if he wanted me to maybe do THAT AFTER I save EVERYONE?! I mean... The pet is fine and is just hiding... I am pretty sure he is fine!!!
That's just silly... Pointing stuff out.
OH AND DON'T WORRY... Match-3 DOES HAVE A SKIP BUTTON -> BUT... There is a huge but...! You have to Shuffle 3x first. I just gotta say... Shuffle wont save you once the "drop down" piece is in the freaking corner of the entire map! Grrh!
So I played some. Saved some and that's it. Game ends rather abruptly.
XD :D
The puzzles were extremely simple, when there were any. For the most part this game relied on "gem drop" style of "puzzle" for EVERYTHING, over and over again, only changing up the patterns or goals. If you're okay with just playing that sort of game for a long time, it's fine, but it doesn't really hold up against the better "hidden object" games out there today.
I am tepid about this game. It's fairly inventive for something in the "match-3" and "hidden object" categories. But it's pretty slow-going for a game where nothing appears to be that difficult. It had too many match 3 exercises where the point was to match icons and nudge a specific icon down to the bottom. The point of these puzzles was certainly unclear, and they were only fun for a couple of minutes before they became outright tedious.
Now that I have continued on I will reiterate that the match-3 puzzles which involve many, many matches to achieve some small goal, are enormously tedious, and there doesn't seem to be any end to them!
This game has interesting puzzles.
This is my least favorite of all the Far Kingdom games. I like HOG and Match 3 so was looking forward to the mix here. The HO scenes were just okay and the Match 3 mini games were a complete pain in the rear. No power-ups to help and the skip option took 3 times of refilling the meter to use; plus moving the pieces felt clunky. The entire game is mediocre but I did finish it so I guess for the price it's okay. Meh.
A short but fun Adventure/Hidden Object/Match 3 game. It doesn't need a map as there are only a few areas accessible at a time. It's more adventure than anything, but it's still fun. Get this one on sale!
This game is relatively easy to navigate great for beginners
Not a good story, hints do nothing, I find it tedious to play.
A mix of match-3, hidden object, and puzzles. And if you don't like hidden object scenes, you can replace them with more match-3. I think. I love HOs so I never glossed over them. The music is nice and some of the backgrounds are quite lovely. However, the game is very short so I don't believe it's worth the asking price. On sale though, I think it'd be a nice addition to your library if you're a fan of match-3, hidden object, or puzzles. Or all three. :)
If you like match 3 games and hidden object games, then you'll almost surely like this one. The story is okay and really serves to simply bind the game together. This game is very heavy on match 3 games, so if that's not your thing, then you'll want to skip it. It has great art and music, very enjoyable hidden object scenes (though I do admit I had difficulty and had to get close to the monitor several times to spot the objects), very enjoyable match 3 games, and enjoyable mini-games. The best thing I can probably say about this game is that I played it in just over 4 hours in one sitting, and it didn't seem like that much time had passed.
Pro:
+ Great art
+ Great music
+ Very enjoyable hidden object scenes
+ Very enjoyable match 3 games
+ Enjoyable mini-games
+ Very little backtracking
Con:
- Difficulty getting it back into fullscreen mode after accidentally changing to window mode (had to close the game, then restart it and hit [ALT-ENTER] as the publisher logo appeared; clicking the fullscreen button on the options screen to re-enable fullscreen had no effect)
- Crashed to desktop once (immediately after speaking with the blacksmith), but no data was lost
Neutral:
+/- Very heavy on match 3 games (pro if you like them, con if you don't)
Nice game but finished within 2 hours, not worth the money for such short game play.
