Overall - good space 4x game.
Pros:
- exploration system
- leaders are interesting and can have a big impact on the game
- asymmetric factions (only with the dlc though)
- good replayability
- combat is nice and nuanced but not too complicated
Cons:
- Ai is not very good even on highest difficulties (but then again in what 4x is it?) but it is decent
- some balance issues, like missiles being superior to other weapons more often than not
- graphics is mediocre
Overall - very nice space 4x, can recommend it along with all dlcs.
A decent remake of MOO2, a bit simplified in some ways, like you don't need to repair ships and ships don't damage things nearby when exploding. Also instead of food there's a new concept of planetary engineering so your population can grow in any biome depending on your race preference without the need to transport food. Good UI. The AI is rather stupid and I'm still looking for a perfect difficulty balance. This was actually the main issue with MOO2 where you could easily win on one level and the next difficulty level seemed almost impossible. Here the difficulty could be fine-tuned more which is a plus.
Sadly in ISG the ship boarding mechanics is nerfed because neutron beam doesn't kill troops and marine pods tech is rather high in the tech tree
OK I am one of these old farts that have been playing computer games since PCs came out. Master of Orion and MOO 2 were great back in the day, but games have evolved and there are lots of 4X games out there. We still need that beer and pretzel 4X space game. Some are overly complicated like Stellaris and some overly simplified like the new version of MOO. I just re-tried Interstellar Space Genesis (lame title) looking to scratch that 4X itch, and I think it is a worthy successor to MOO. You can feel it in the design choices, but it feels evolved from the original, like what MOO 3 should have been. I like the UI, once you get used to it it presents a lot of useful info at a glance. Ship design is simple. There is even a manual! How old school. For the price point, you could do a lot worse. A modern game based on and continuing an old classic. Get it, it's good.
Definitely a thumbs up - IS:G is very clearly based on MOO2 but with some really nice additions and tweaks. The "remote exploration" mechanic can actually change the map, the leaders are more capable/interesting than vanilla MOO2, and there are more victory mechanics available - giving you more choice on how you want to play. Standard tech tree and ship design activities work well, too.
If you're looking for something casual that has you clicking "one more turn" - this is a good choice.
A great take on the 4x space genre; it's a big step up from Space Empires IV. The controls are intuitive and feel like they're designed for a player to interact with a game, rather than an interactive simulation -- a problem with a lot of games in the genre
This game doesn't have anything unseen before in this particular genre, but is very well put together and quite fun to play. It has just enough depth and complexity to make it challenging but not overbearing.
What I like:
- clean and useful UI, easy to find information
- intuitive gameplay, didn't have to google how stuff works
- sleek ship design tool and engaging combat system
- you are encouraged to use focus on planets depending on current priorities
- good diplomacy system
What I don't like:
- refitting ships should be done from the fleet menu not planet menu, there are a number of unnecessary clicks to achieve that
- not a lot of things to build on planets
- rather weird research system
Very disappointed
As someone who has loved 4X games from MOO to Stellaris I was really looking forward to trying this.
Sadly I cannot recommend this game as its just dull.
Game mechanics, music, meta game, interface all meh
Thumbs down
Kinda like Master of Orion 2. Worth a buy. The DLCs probably not at full price. Some graphical and tactical battle annoyances but nothing major.
Yarp. Lot like MOO2, as many have said. A good thing, as it was the best of the series. Diff enough to make it interesting and other stuff ads sauce. Decent learning curve but not abusive, at least on their intro, play this to learn lvl. Just won first game, now to jack up diff a lvl, as I do with all games per win.
Just wish you could pick diff faction leaders on start or make one. Also, the building slots are kinda a silly thing, you have a whole planet to build on, ffs.
Liked it well enough that I immediately bought the dlc.
The best successor to Master of Orion 2 available on PC. The developer frequently updates the game. I'm eager to try out the DLCs next time I play!
I you like MOO, you'll love ISG
87 hours so far and loving the game! I'm a 59 yo veteran of 4X games. This game strikes a nice balance between complexity and playability; lots of details and options but without requiring excessive micro-management. It's a nice evolution of the MOO series with a better interface and smoother game flow.
super fun. really good 4x. highly reccomend.
Good update to MoO2. Graphics not great but acceptable. Some touches that show the makers played MoO and loved it then thought about what they could do a bit better.
I don't like fleet management - A bit clunky.
When on sale an absolute steal for people who like turn-based 4X, worth grabbing. Its better than MoO: Conquer the Stars in that its more faithful to MoO in general. Conquer the Stars has mods which make it much better but the combat in that game remains awful. Because this sticks to turn-based a la MoO2 it is a better experience I feel.
Additions to ISG like Space Culture are great and the fact your colonies even level up rather than just grow bigger is such a wonderful touch.
A worthy MOO2 successor.
Probably more competent than beautiful.
Fun game. I really enjoy it. The duration of gameplay is short to medium (you can finish the game within 1 day, basically the same pace and length as MOO2). But the replayability is very high because the game mechanics disallows exploring & inventing everything in a single playthrough. It depends on the race as well. You will have multiple games to try various tactics and it's still enjoyable. It's like lift and shift of MOO2 with some extra stuff that modern 4x like Civ, Endless Space 2 or Stellaris achieve in more less various ways but there are also original new features (I won't spoil) and unique approach to espionage or tech. Although, of course, the master remains the same (MOO2) but IS:G is something that I was waiting for long time. It doesn't feel indie although it really feels like the dev stood on hair to deliver quality product with indie budget. Total respect.
Pros:
- Atmosphere, graphics, music.
- Tactical space combat is really good.
- Ship designer makes sense (thanks to tactical combat).
- The races are vivid, have their distinct style, lore and gameplay, and even require different tactics in ship combat.
- Leaders are more than just stat boosters, you have to see it
- Research depends on more than just tech tree, it depends on the events.
- It has many more aspects apart from fleet building and combat.
- Balanced gameplay (you don't have to research everything to win the game, if you go with the flow, early tech is also enjoyable and can lead to domination)
- You can give feedback using google form so I guess the devs care about feedback
Cons:
- Planetary invasion is acceptable but the troop combat part could have been more than a progress slider (I'd pay double the price of DLC for a DLC with ground combat and invasion rework).
- The promo videos on Steam aren't convincing, the ingame graphics is many times better, for some reason the marketing videos look like recorded in low resolution which almost made me skip the purchase.
- The 'Interstellar Space: Genesis with all expansions' as of October '24 doesn't contain the latest DLC - Interstellar Space: Genesis Terrains Pack. I was in good mood and all DLCs were on sale, so I just bought it separately for 4$. But this bundle name is misleading.
- AI could be a bit wiser. For example they go for my outpost when I have a fleet in range of their undefended capital. Don't get me wrong, it's not dumb. They ask for alliance when in trouble, they can have grudges against you, tactical combat seems to look good (although at the time of review I only played a couple of hours). But here and there I can see some flaws.
- At some point I felt like tech was researched too fast. I had to deliberately research every tech from tier not to research the whole branch too fast.
- Price, although I feel it's low in order to compensate for the marketing failure, the game is really innovative and deep, it can rival with Endless Space 2, and in some aspects (immersion) it's better than Stellaris (which I also play)
Wishes:
- Ground combat DLC.
- More storyline DLCs with unique events and rewards. Maybe even multiple main storylines? Or per-race goals?
- Could use a few more techs (but they should remain unique), races, leaders, ships, quests, generally more everything.
- Even more content DLCs.
- I'd give an option in maybe game setup to have a different way of penalizing research, as I don't get why researching the same tier increases time (if you research the use of the same technology in real life, it's actually easier than developing it for the first time). Maybe make an option - so as not make the research go too quick - to penalize researching the next tier until you have researched every core tech from the lower tier. For example Tier 4 tech will have x4 research time (+1 per each tier 3 unresearched tech) if Tier 3 tech has 3 unresearched core techs. Then if you research 2 techs from Tier 3 and 1 remains, Tier 4 will have x2 (+1 for each unresearched lower tier). That way uncreative species would be also properly penalized
The most MoO2 i ever played after MoO2.
Needs MP tho
Very, very similar to Masters Of Orion. Not enough interesting differences to make it worth buying, just play MOO.
Did you like Master of Orion 2 but always just wanted a updated and improved version. This is the real deal right here. Refined and polished. Fun space strategy. If your a MOO2 fan this is a must buy. The nostalgia alone is worth it. Also many refinements and improvements we wish we had back in the day.
Very much like an improvement to what Master of Orion 2 did.
A very impressive game. Inspired by “Master of Orion 2”, but this version is superior in my opinion. The graphics are beautiful, the soundtrack sublime. Too bad the game isn't available to those who don't understand English.
There's a lot of work here. The details, the user interface, the ease of access to information with a simple mouse-over...
No bugs, solid. A little gem.
...
The difficulty of the game can be precisely adjusted. For example, 100% for all players, whether in production or research. And after a few games, while consulting the screen displaying the strengths and weaknesses of each empire, you can change these values from 50% to 200%. In other words, you can truly create “equal” opponents, then increase these values as you become stronger and stronger.
Aggressiveness, production and research can be adjusted.
I can't wait to see what the developers have in store for us next.
I highly recommend this game.
This game is pretty faithful MOO2 clone. It improves on some aspects (e.g. diplomacy, exploration) but made others worse (e.g. combat, metaplot). To me it somehow feels "soulless" or maybe it is just lacking an identity on its own. I don't know. The DLC are nothing to write home about.
Anyhow, if you like Master of Orion 2, chances are good you will like this game, too.
Lovely game. ST is amazing.Really good immersion even though not as big as Stellaris.
The essential parts of this game are lifted directly from Master of Orion 2, but the devs have brought in some new features, more or less a sprinkling of Stellaris-inspired stuff without being as complicated as Stellaris.
The interface is familiar to any 4x player. Essential information not only exists on pages where it's logical to have it, but almost always provide very detailed information on mouseover, essentially an entire breakdown of how the number was calculated, what are the stats of that leader, etc. There are searchable locations to scan for, more resources than money, food, production, and research, and generally a good sprinkling of interesting stuff without making the game too bogged down in complexity. Combat is essentially MOO2 with a couple added features like overloading and heat. Overall recommend as an accessible game to play that at least at the time of this writing isn't overwhelming in DLC cost and complexity.
A very fun, simple and well made space 4X strategy game. It knows what it wants to do and it does it very well. if you like these kinds of games, this is a great choice.
To be fair, it's not necessarily a bad game. I just found it to be tedious. There are a lot of turns spent just clicking next, next, next, while waiting for things to be built. The process to improve a planet is tedious. The research needed to improve a planet takes too long. The amount of planetary building that you can actually build is too few. The game is just, well, boring. Master of Orion, to me, is a better game.
