Awesome worldbuilding, feeling, aesthetics.
Incredibly punchy weapons and abilities.

I really enjoyed my time with The Ascent and the environments are absolutely stunning. I had some friends who had some pretty bad bugs, the save wiping one to be specific but thankfully I didn't encounter that.
This game's world building and atmosphere is top tier, really impressive, having played both cyberpunk 2077 and the shadowrun games this one became my favorite cyberpunk world, would love to see more of it specially in something like a CRPG in this universe, where we could play as the many interesting species this universe has to offer, i would love to play as a larkian.
this game reminds me of Project: Overkill (for all you PS1 players that know what i am talking about, game by Konami) but with more cyberpunkesque style. Super fun. Highly recommend. awesome co-op. game has crashed sometimes but it isnt anything to fuss about.
Great game. The music, visuals, vibe, all excellent. Had to spend a bit too much time in-menu organizing items.
the sci-fi setting is one of my favorites, the story is also interesting, the only thing missing is the lobby for online multiplayers

A fun looter shooter with quests with a top down view if you like cyberpunk 2077 this game is like a mini game version with a great look and a bit of strategy type shooting.
When I first played this game it was solid, loads of fun and no issues gameplay wise. When my friends talked about getting back into it I was excited. Unfortunately something happened between when I first played it and now.
My friends and I have been experiencing;
-Frequent Game crashes
-Our hud vanishing
-Constant graphical errors that make it look like items are there when they aren't
-Sound errors where it sounds like our guns are dry firing over and over again when we aren't shooting
-Game freezing when multiple people talk to the same NPC
Initially I would have recommended this game, but I don't recommend it until they fix the game again.

Scratches several of those futuristic dystopian needs. Reminds me a little of Syndicate. Very well designed world.
As a solo player, its annoyingly difficult at points, but I recommend it, because its a good fucking game. world design 10/10
Had it for a while but really didn't get into it much till now, still trying to get into it lol. It's weird seeing just "literally" how far the systems we play vid's on have come. This game has a special "sci fi" feel to it like a mix of The Matrix and Blade Runner (the first one). It's very immersive and that's how I like it!
As others have said - this might later be good, but the beginning is clunky enough that I'll play other games first.
Visuals in this game are amazing. But the rest is... It has so many tiny quality of life things you take for granted in other games missing. Like "one click sell/buy" w/o ability to undo, camera movement has no smoothing etc. The map is also have questionable usefulness, as you can't tell if there is a path or not, and it often shows your marker just hanging in space in the void.
I had fun with this game. The world detail is rich and very cyberpunk.
I did feel like, for me, it just sort of ended too soon. Like, I had just started to max out my character when the end boss came along. I guess I didn't complete all the side quests though.
I would have welcomed a home base to return to. And more things to spend credits on, that aren't guns or upgrades.
All in all it's a AAA game and I recommend it. I may buy the DLC mission.
combat: 06/10: fun but not anything special, its a twin stick shooter with some additional mechanics
worldbuilding, lore, art direction, sounds and overall immersion: 10/10 absolutely amazing
a downside i found to this game is you cant rebind a few keys, such as "open inventory". you can rebind every character action keybind and many others, but theres still a few keybinds missing! i dont like opening my inventory with TAB (default setting), but i cant rebind it. guess they forgot about that.
you also cannot set crouch to toggle/hold. you're forced to play it toggled, which is fine, but i prefer it as hold.
you can also customize your character at the beginning of the game and redo your character later.
outside of sale, the game is worth it. on sale, its completely worth it!
Absolutely fantastic game it looks amazing, runs really well and has very good gameplay that I can't get enough of tbh. I've played through both the main game and cyber heist DLC and I can say with certainty that both are well worth it. There were a couple bugs throughout my playthrough but nothing to the extent that could ruin the overall experience I had playing The Ascent. Anyways this game is great 9/10, buy it now lol.
The game and game play I've enjoyed BUT, Beware of random Crashes, both the game shuting down and your pc completely freezing up.
Fun, graphics are also very nice.
Honestly.... the game is really good, it has some very cool camera action, it is well designed, there is a lot of lore put into it, gameplay is fluid and there are lots and lots of weapons

Just to clarify, 3070, 12600K, 64 GB RAM,
This game crashed once on launch, and twice within 20 min of game play. The artwork in this game is absolutely amazing and beautiful, the character animations seems flawless and very polished over, which is what caught my eye. The cyberpunk-esq is very appealing and immersion sets in almost immediately when you start playing!
However,, I'm so depressed that it doesn't function as good as it looks. I bought it at $8, but its not an $8 I want to keep in my library if I cant play it without crashing. With reviews mentioning crashing and poor co-op experience and its been this long without addressed issues, its likely that the dev's gave up caring and left this game behind. Either way, I've refunded.
Truly sad that this game has not been optimized, and really had high hopes prior to my purchase. I will still follow for updates, despite 4 years since its release, doubt anything will change, but can only hope.

Despite its rough edges, it certainly deserves at least one playthrough but I recommend getting it on sale if possible.
Haven't played the game too much yet, but so far I'm really enjoying it. It's Cyberpunk Diablo, which is exactly what I wanted to play. The setting is a cool mix of Blade Runner and dystopian Star Wars, the soundtrack is exciting and the gun play is crunchy and satisfying.
The main appeal of The Ascent is the cyberpunk visuals and fast-paced gameplay and it Absolutely delivers in both categories. The game looks stunning and the combat is fun. Where the game lacks is all the story and lore elements and the side missions which aren't compelling at all. It does scratch the cyberpunk, top down shooter itch though. Buy on sale.
A gorgeous exploration into a world built with exquisite detail. Upgrading your weapons is absolutely exhilarating, as you annihilate the frantic murderous hordes.
Decent for a cyberpunk ARPG but not enough for a lot of replay-ability.
It's a very average experience with no immediate takeaways.

A few bugs here and there, but overall an immersive world with large maps, and intense single-player firefights.
Fun arsenal of weapons, tactical gear, augmentations, and mods keeps combat fresh and fun.
Some bosses and enemies are very hard and require specific weapons and strategies.
Reminds me of "Crusader: No Remorse" (1995) in terms of isometric world building and weapon variety.
Very atmospheric music similar to Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner.
Great voice acting and some very bad-a$$ mechs.
Highly recommended.
Kinda has Fallout meets Astragon vibes. ets a little repetitive after a while, but the main quests and side quests keep it interesting enough for around 35-40h.
Pros:
~Combat is fun, there are a wide variety of different weapons, and abilities to try out.
~The sound design is good, shotguns sound powerful, miniguns sound heavy and powerful etc.
~The visuals are stunning.
~The music fits the game very well, thumping electro beats for combat, more ambient stuff for non-combat, each song fits the area you are in.
~The world is pretty cool, the story itself is alright I guess.
Cons:
~Most retarded quest system I have ever seen, the game will allow you to accept side quests for areas that are currently locked behind the main quest. The side quest will eventually break and lead you nowhere until the main quest required is completed. It gives no indication that this is the problem.
~Speccing into max health seems required.
A fun game, not sure if it's worth a full $30. I got it on sale for $10 and it was worth every penny.
It's current state is poor optimization. Stutters when loading main menu, random stutters during combat, exploring. Game is fun and cyberpunk feel is good..only last so long then it becomes scenery and you look deeper and further into this game as to what it can give and it just comes up short. What i do not understand is you have something with all these assets and you just let it go and discontinue updates or even discussing any plans for future developement. Game Devs. have all these assets, all these story lines from prior games, yet they fail to utlilize that players would play the same darn game over and over if you updated it, upgraded it, and kept that passion for the game when you first created it in your basement.

Not that good but not that bat either. The world and graphics are amazing but there is something that are missing.
I actually really love this game.
It isn't a perfect game. There are actually quite a few things "wrong" or not ideal about the game, but for me the positives far far outweigh the negatives.
This game has an unmatched atmosphere. The graphics (imo) are fantastic and the environments are so incredibly detailed and dense. The density of objects and population is amazing, and the verticality of this game i've never experienced before in gaming.
I just really wish this game was open to modding. I feel like there is a lot that could be done with this game. There are so many things that are great, like i say the environment, the isometric angle and arpg nature. However i'd absolutely love if this game just had more. More levels, more missions, more loot, and any endgame type of thing that could be repeated for replayability.
In fact, this would probably be my favourite game of all time if there was a loot system more like Borderlands, where there are a list of parts and the mix/match is randomly generated.
If there was anything i'd crave for gaming more than anything, it would be an Ascent 2, or Ascent style game with BL type of loot.
You can find this game on some massive sales (pretty sure thats how i got it a long time ago) and it is for sure worth its price of admission then. Excellent game to play and experience for the first time.

The Ascent feels a little like an AI-generated fever dream to play. The game is polished, beautiful, detailed and just so painfully, viscerally meh. The story is predictable in all but a few moments, told largely through dialogue with characters begging for any kind of personality and whose voice acting (which I imagine is largely voice synthesis using machine learning) is the kind that really makes you appreciate all the talented voice actors that aren't in this game. The game progresses at a snail's pace, introducing exactly zero new mechanics past the first few hours and relying on antiquated "+1% critical chance" upgrades that quickly become a necessity because of the difficulty spike in the latter half of the game. Weapons are varied and interesting to use but become elaborate pea shooters once the game starts expecting you to spend upgrade components to improve them. I found myself relying on a single gun throughout most of the game, switching maybe once or twice once I had enough upgrade components to bring another gun to a reasonable level.
Save yourself the 30 euros (or, if it's on sale, the 10-20 hours) and buy a game with characters whose voices don't feel like sandpaper to your eardrums.
4/10, and I'm being generous.
Great game, Multiplayer sucks hard balls. Lag spikes, frame drops. Literally unplayable in co-op.
But single player is alright.
It has some bugs, including freezes and crashes, but it is a real beauty with a captivating story and decent gameplay. Worth it when on sale.
I've fully completed the game. Done almost all achievements (62/66) at the moment of the review. I've done all the missions in the game.
I've spent 22 hours in it.
After all of that I can safely advise anyone to stay away from it.
I don't deny that it looks beautiful. All enviroments look very rich and nice overall. Impact of almost all weapons look satysfying as well. Visual design look not bad and true to setting.
Alas, this game is very painful to play. And that should be the main focus of any game.
I haven't seen worse design of map than in this game. It's very unintuitive at best times and very frustrating at most times. Almost everytime it's very unclear where to go.
Game has a very vague waypoints on the edges of the screen, however they NEVER show you if your goal on higher or lower floor/stage. I've found that "O" key shows you the way, but that doesn't show anywhere and I don't know why anyone would try all the keys to find it.
If your goal is in another "sector" (game doesn't provide such classification) which can be accessed only via special 'inter-sector" elevators, you won't know it.
You begin to guess that it's the case after some time in the game.
There is a taxi feature ("T" button) which shows you the goal. And if it's not there, then you should deduce that you need to go to that inter-sector elevators.
Bugs. There are a lot of them. I'd say you can't play 1 whole minute without encountering any. That's not an exaggeration. We've used actual timer with my co-op partner at one of our playhthroughs.
They really differ from wierd visual ones to outright blocking any actions in your game. Some of them can be fixed by another player using taxi feature (which is not available everywhere). Some not. And you can't avoid it.
It includes several achievements as well. One time game completely lost my progress. Completely. 10 hours - poof, gone. (We danced a lot with my friends save file for it to work in my game (we cleared the game together))
And another thing is the game design. Last ~4 hours of the main game (without DLC, but with all side quests) was juggling between: 1 minute gunfight, 2 minutes walking to lifts, 5 second lifts (that can broke in your case and softblock you), loading screens ~20 seconds, taxi.
I don't understand why this game lets you collect duplicate equipement if there are no inventory managment in any form. No slots, no weight, nothing. The game let's you sell duplicates but only one category of equipement at a time. WHY?
You can change your player colours (color in which armor will be) only in the surgeon's menu, who... yes, hides all your armor so you can see your character's body.
And yes, your primary color determines what color your character has on minimap. This feature isn't explained anywhere. But if you or some other player chose black, it's virtually impossible to see it on minimap.
I guess that's it. That's a very frtustrating game which exhausts you a lot in 20 hours of the main game and +~2 hours of DLC. And that's a feat in itself!
None of this game's features worth anyone's time.
UPDATE: I've finished all 66 achievements. In 2,5 hours. You just pray that all of them will trigger first time when conditions are met, not to mention that some of them should be triggered separately by other player for them to count towards the friend's progress as well.
The gameplay could be better. It's repetitive, it's either really easy or very bullet spongy. It's still quite satisfying to mow down enemies though with some of the bigger guns. The story is also just kinda ok. I like that every character has a voice sure, but you can tell it's just the same few people with I *think* some sort of AI voice changer. It's understandable if all of these set backs were due to budget restrictions though. But I'd seriously argue the main reason to play this game is for the world. The maps and the design of everything is overflowing with detail and originality. I kept looking for things that seemed like tile packs but I kept finding original stuff instead. That's not to say everything is unique, but you'll need to look quite hard in the environment to find re-used assets. I got every achievement in the game just because I wanted to see every area in the game. I honestly wish I could explore the world of The Ascent (maybe not in person though since I'd get mugged) and see and experience everything it has to offer. I'd also love to see another game from this universe, whether it stays on Veles or moves off-world I know the world design team that made this can make anywhere an absolute pleasure to explore.

The visuals of this game are incredible, especially considering the team size. The world and lore is great too. However the gameplay gets repetitive fast. The action plays like a twin-stick shooter with loot. The RPG elements are _very_ light but does enable some difference in play style, although not regarding interaction with the world and story. The story, quests and level design are just ok.
Much like everyone says, The Ascent is a fantastic action rpg game brought down by it's bugs, short length and questionable difficulty curve.
The bugs in solo mostly boil down to framerate issues and crashes if you're running on DirectX 12 and RTX on, but without those the game seems more stable.
Haven't played multiplayer so cannot judge for those.
The length of the game is about 15hrs for the base game, which is decent but makes the product feels slightly overpriced despite the clear passion behind it all.
And the difficulty curve will sometimes bring you to situations where your only option is to die on the enemies until you get enough experience to level up and find a way to tank through it which is kinda sad, as some enemies will almost certainly cause this (looking at you, spider robots)
Besides all that, the game looks stunning, it has a great soundtrack attached to it, wonderful sound design and good combat feels, just kind of a shame the previously mentioned points bring it down so much - cause when the game is balanced and works it's a great time and I'll definitely come back for New Game Plus soon enough.
Get it on sale, often goes out for 5 euros and you probably won't regret it if you're okay with the few setbacks.
- Main story is ok
- Side quests are 95% fetch quests.
- There's a lot of walking, even in an age where people have net-access. A LOT of walking.
- Armour and weapons are ok. You'll stick to 1-2 guns for your whole playthrough, melee is pretty much an afterthought.
- A lot of bugs. No widescreen support, you'll have to find a fix online or play super zoomed in.
- Missing cut-scenes, spelling mistakes, unfinished entries. Feels uncooked.
- Unplayable on a controller. The aiming is a jittery mess with little to no aim-assist (even at high).
- Music is great. Good electro beats and "Ghost-in-the-shell-inspired" overtures.
- Enviroments are some of the best I have seen in a cyberpunk game. A truly gritty cyberpunk universe, I almost feel this game would be better in first-person because of all the detail, grittiness and lighting.
- Because of the above, some moments can feel quite cinematic. It has overall, good art direction.
In short, a fun little Diablo-clone. With not a lot of depth, very few quality of life mechanics and a few bugs. The environments and atmosphere should be studied as they are very well done. Get it on a big discount for less than $10 imho.
