THE STORY

The first manned mission to colonize planet Mars is finally launched into space. But before reaching the destination, the mission ends in disturbing circumstances: The crew of the ship has disappeared without leaving any trace.

While the scientific community struggles to understand the inexplicable events, all other colonization missions are postponed indefinitely.

The Space Agency, desperate to find out what happened, decides to send a new mission to investigate the strange events.

The new crew, consisting of scientists, astronauts, and robots with the latest Artificial Intelligence, embarks on a journey into the unknown that will challenge their scientific beliefs and will reveal a previously unknown side of the Universe, forever changing the role of humanity in space.

The Conquest of Space doesn’t seem so achievable anymore…

ABOUT THE VISUAL NOVEL

Event-D is a sci-fi Visual Novel, featuring a thought-provoking story about human exploration of space and questioning the role of humanity in this endeavor.

It is a serious story, aimed at sci-fi fans and players who value story-rich experiences without having to spend hours and hours grinding.

If you’ve ever been curious about Visual Novels, but you are turned off by the ecchi side of most VNs, you won’t find that in this game, so I invite you to give it a try ;)

FEATURES:

  • Kinetic Visual Novel (linear narrative with single ending).
  • Story length: about 60.000 words.
  • Play Time: 4 to 5 hours.
  • Fast and straightforward storytelling, no pointless conversations.
  • No ecchi, loli or waifu content.
  • Thrilling and engaging musical ambient.
  • Produced in 3D (rendered images), with a completely different look from all other visual novels.
  • Unlike most visual novels, Event-D doesn’t use character sprites over backgrounds. Instead, thanks to the 3D workflow, every image throughout the story is a unique rendered image, with unique poses, rich environments, and camera angles.

Surprisingly good compared to most VNs on Steam. No vampires, ghosts, or awkward waifu romances, just a good old fashioned Star Trekian sci-fi adventure with likable characters and an impressive amount of original 3D artwork.

I try not to expect too much from "kinetic novels" like Event-D. These stories can be amusing, but are rarely thought-provoking and usually forgettable. This one surprised me. It's actually solid science fiction! Not the best I've read, but certainly better than many hard copy novels I have suffered though. Event-D is not hard sci-fi, but not space opera either; it's somewhere in between. This story is worth a look. I enjoyed it while reading and it left me with a couple things to keep thinking about afterward.

I find this to be a solid story with real entertainment value. Kudos for the art, too: it's not the usual approach, and it works, as far as I'm concerned. Clearly, the creator invested a serious amount of effort into creating this. I hope there will be a sequel, because there are some cool threads in this story that I would really like to see explored.

In conclusion: SPAAAACE!

I was blown away. This is a truly outstanding work of science fiction by Manuel F. Cedeño. The art is gorgeous. The story is compelling. The characters are well realized. There are some very big ideas. The English grammar is about 98% there, but at no time did I have any trouble understanding what was being said. I highly recommend this gem to anyone interested in space exploration, artificial intelligence, or strong female characters.

Event-D is a sci-fi visual novel. If you look at the preview pictures, you will see what to expect : 95% of the game will be similar to a picture with a few lines on it. What you won’t see, is that there will be a constant background music, suited to the general mood of the story. Also, the visuals in practically every screen will be different in some way from the previous one. A different setting, a different angle in the setting or just a different posture / expression of the cast. Advancing the text without a change in the picture will be the exception and not the rule. The rest few percent will be pictures without texts, like when showing a ship to undock and speed away. The previews are misleading in this way, as much of the textless pictures are from a phase before the text box is displayed after an advance to the next text box. All texts are preceded by the person who is speaking. When merely describing things, this person will be the Narrator. A nice touch is that each person has her/his personal name color, making it easier to track who is speaking. The narrator will have the white color.

The novel is divided into chapters, most chapters were about 9 minutes long for me on average. There are 33 chapters plus an intro, and it took me 5 and half hours to read it through. It is just like a novel, a straight presentation without branches/choices. In that sense watching a video playthrough of this novel would result in largely the same experience as playing it for yourself. However, by playing it, you can control the rhythm of the text advancement according to your reading speed preferences.

The game starts in a small window – always. If you want to watch it full screen, you will have to switch to full screen every time you start the game. I did every time so. Also the user interface is a bit unpolished. I preferred to advance the text with Enter. Most of the time it works, but there will be times, when it has no effect at all. At those times I had to left click the mouse to advance it further. If you advance exclusively with mouse clicks, than it won’t be an issue for you. You can save freely by clicking the Save button in the lower right corner. There will be plenty of slots to choose from. However if you want to use only the first save screen tab, after filling every slot you will have to remember what slot you have overwritten last, because there will be only a thumbnail of the saved screen, with no further info. Since I usually played in 3 chapter chunks, I run into this problem. A minor initial annoyance was that when entering the Options menu from the Main Menu, there is a Main Menu button, but that does nothing. Instead you return to the Main Menu with the Back button. Then again these are minor inconveniences, and the meat of the game, the story/presentation are of an excellent quality.

The music pool is quite large, at no point of the game I felt that it reuses the same tunes repeatedly. In most cases a general futuristic, soothing music will play. The calm background music in Mass Effect is a good approximation as to what to expect. There is obviously no voice acting. The graphics can be judged by the previews. I found it aesthetically pleasing. Clearly a lot of assets were created for this visual novel. I read a negative review regarding some wording and/or grammatical issues. As a non English speaker I had found only one case that didn’t sound right to me. It was when the word aboard was used a few times instead of the verb board. This however can be judged correctly only by a native speaker of English. Also there was one line preceded with an upside down exclamation mark, and ending in an exclamation mark. It was a single case, hinting that the original version of the story was written in Spanish.

Story wise, it is a surprisingly good sci-fi. It is from the genre of the hard sci-fi, i.e. more like 2001 : Space Odyssey than Star Wars. While I like most kind of sci-fis, I generally appreciate the hard sci-fis more. In the first chapter the existence of a mystery will be revealed, and the novel presents how an unexpected event offers a chance to investigate it further. The game presents a complete story, but it ends with a to be continued text. Unfortunately by browsing the forums for further information for this game, I discovered that it didn’t loose the Profile features limited tag (along with the Low confidence metric tag). It can be seen at SteamDb in the History tab for this game. Neither of these tags has anything to do with the quality of the game. They are merely internal flags, more or less showing that the game has either failed to achieve a “reasonable” amount of sells and/or a reasonable amount of concurrent players. Which is a shame, because it is a valuable addition to the hard sci-fi genre. As such, the chances of further visual novel entries in this franchise are slim.

Event-D is a story-driven visual novel. It doesn’t have any gameplay so to speak, and its main feature really is its story which takes us to outer space in order to solve a mystery. So, right off the bat, if you are looking for an RPG or a game to make some story-related decisions, this is not it. But if you are interested in good stories, especially those involving space travel, then stay in your seats.

3 years after one of the space missions went wrong and the crew of the ship disappeared, a new crew is sent to locate the missing ship, to find out what happened there, and to bring it back with any survivors. We are that rescue crew, consisting of specialists from various fields. The story starts off a little slowly as all the main characters are introduced, but it picks up nicely after that and sets a good pace full of intense moments, climaxes, and twists. At the same time, it manages to delve enough into the world building and character development to make them all come alive. In addition to human characters, there is a handful of robot characters too and the topic of A.I comes up a lot and its relevance to the world in the game.

Most of this visual novel is presented as still images using 3D models, and as scenes develop, we are shown dialogue or narration. The way the scenes flow is surprisingly good despite it all happening with still images. It's easy to feel like you're in the scene. The music and sound effects also help with the atmosphere, especially during eerie and action scenes. There is no voice acting, but this is a visual novel, so voiceover is not necessary.

So, overall I enjoyed this. It has a really well-written story with an interesting world and characters. I only wish that it had some more player interaction, like perhaps some choices for us to make during some parts of the story. Hopefully if the devs make another game in the future, they'll add some of this.

3/10 - Bad:

Littered with spelling and grammar errors, Event-D seems like a novel where the director has forgotten that they’re doing a visual novel.

The story takes great pains to tell you what is happening, what is being ‘felt’ by each character, and so on, rather than allowing the story to take place and let the place infer things or try to figure things out themselves.

The various elements fail to work together; For example, visual novels have a visual aspect, there’s character sprites and background art that shows you what is happening. Oft, the novel doesn’t bother to take advantage of this, even if the art shows something happening, the text will go to great pains to explain in-depth what is actually going on.

Furthermore, when there is dialogue, a dialogue box pops up with the character’s name etc. Which, excuse the obviousness, is designed to show you who is speaking. And yet, the game goes to even greater pains to point out who is saying what.

Example of what gets written in a dialogue box:

“This is an absurd game” says Oda, crossing his arms in annoyance (visibly on the art but screw it we’re telling you here too).

“I agree” Nova said, thinking about gigantic aubergines and carrots. Why? I dunno, I’m trying to be lolrandom here.

Why? It’s a visual novel, there’s a dialogue box with a nameplate on to indicate who is talking, why the hell do we need the constant ‘she ordered’, ‘he says’, ‘he exclaims’ etc? The box already identifies the speaker. The art is supposed to convey the emotion, the authority or surprise etc. What we have here is a novel where the various parts that make it a visual novel don’t work in tandem with each other, which is the ultimate sin for a visual novel in my opinion. That could be salvaged by storytelling, and indeed, there’s an interesting, if basic sci-fi story here, but the method of telling it is far too amateur, breaking every rule in the rulebook of storytelling, including telling rather than showing. One to avoid.

This was a fantastic Sci-Fi visual novel that I have enjoyed spending my time reading. I love mystery themed visual novels and this one had plenty of unanswered thought-provoking mysteries that really makes you think. I am really looking forward to the mysteries being solved if there is ever a sequel. I find it sad when stories end with cliffhangers that could last forever because the game didn't attract enough people. More people need to spread the word about this hidden gem. If you want a Sci-Fi visual novel and are tired of the anime/manga art style ones, I recommend this!

A hidden gem of Science-Fiction story!

Event-D is a kinetic novel set in space and dealing with thematics like human evolution and artificial intelligence.
The characters are all interesting, but some are more often seen than others. If you have a favorite, they may not get a lot of screen time.

Talking about screens, the presentation is similar to a photo novel, where you can see illustrations of everything happening in addition to reading it.
This makes it feel like watching a movie while reading its script at the same time.

The story itself knows how to keep a constant flow of events to hook the reader, jumping from an unexpected event to an unsuspected twist, always in a logical way.
Sci-Fi is not used here to poorly explain set up plot twists. It's a great story than every sci-fi lover should read.

Highly recommended!

Very, very pleased with this kinetic novel (no choices, to the uninitiated). The dosh was well-spent.

I appreciate that something like this won't be everybody's cup of Bovril but it's a pretty tight sci-fi story - one with an internally-consistent yet adventurous plot, a twist or two, villains and some commentary on human nature. And humour - always important to have a dash of that.

It was precisely upon reaching a climactic point when my laptop suddenly and inexplicably shut itself down. Words cannot readily convey my frustration at that moment; however my fist pounding the table it rested upon and upsetting my nearby beverage just might... And that, my friends, provides an excellent measure of how "gripping" I have found this story to be.

For those seeking cute anime birds prancing about in their pantii, sorry lads but there's none of that here. However what you will find is some intriguing artwork. The backgrounds are great - as are the sprites which are all 3D stills (which is different). There's nothing horrid on the eye by any means.

Apparently a single bloke seems to have taken care of the whole box and dice apart from the soundtrack (which isn't too bad either), and that is a most laudable effort. In fact, if I had to make any criticisms they would relate to a couple of tiny plot flaws (easily hand-waved), and the English translation which is a tad wobbly here and there but nothing mission critical. Overall this pleases on many counts - it is a solid piece of work. Accordingly I give it a solid 1.625 thumbs. (We are left teased by a TBC so I hope that our intrepid coder/author doesn't leave us dangling for too long!)

Interesting dialogues between the characters, and their place in this alternate future. The future of robotics and artificial life's acceptance as autonomous beings is an interesting thought in itself. The storyline itself is easy enough for most people to grasp; no understanding of astronomy or robotics required!

Very straightforward story telling. Wastes no time with much extraneous dialogue. Easy to put on "Auto" and just coast along. Sometimes if you read the monitor screens ingame, there are strange Latin phrases. I have not had the chance to decipher much of them, but it would be cool to feature a part of the game that translates them!

Great work for a single person to undertake. Any complaints would be minor. I wish more people knew about this gem.

This is a moving story presenting very real issues to do with humanoid robotics in regard to human desire to conquer - let alone conquer space. I literally found myself glued to the edge of my chair, very inspired and yet left with quite a lump in my throat.

Great art, character expressions that fully support the story and it's moods.

I thoroughly recommend this.
