The game can NOT connect to server, and single play no good
fun game if big battles and summons are yer shtick. paticulary fond of my "yo dog i heard you like summons" deck i built up. only gripe is it's a little on the grindy side and no way to earn premium currency through playing so if ya want skins ya gotta pay up also there's like zero people who play this in the west so good luck finding a 2v2 match or playing the co-op unless ya got a friend or 3 ya can rope into playing with ya.
I remember playing this in it's early days and kinda forgot about it for a while until I decided to play again recently and this game has improved a lot. Easy to learn and there always seems to be some people on. Much of the game is translated to English by now but I have seen some bits here and there that haven't been but it's nothing major. Do Recommend this overlooked gem I'll prob be playing for a long time!
Very enjoyable Touhou experience, if lacking in any formal story. Simple controls make the game easy to get into, and the tons of characters and customization options make for a rich and varied strategy experience with tons of replayabiity. Great artwork and music; I actually found myself looking up a couple of the songs. New content and fixes are rolling out constantly.
As of this writing, English isn't fully implemented in-game, but I haven't found that to be hindrance in understanding or enjoying the game. The official wiki covers everything in English if there is anything you can't figure out.
My only real gripe is the apparent lack of other players; finding random co-op partners, for example, has been quite difficult. This may be tied to the region settings or the time of day I normally play, but I haven't been bothered enough to look into it further.
Bottom line, as a free to play to game, there is no reason not to give this a shot, especially if you are a Touhou or strategy fan.
Chinese RTS/MOBA fan game of Touhou.
Pros:
-LIterally updated every week for the Eight Months I've owned this game
-Before the sprites were pretty rough but after an update they look fantastic
-awesome soundtrack
-Decently balanced and often patched
-art is gorgeous
-tons of references for true sweaty fans
-just satisfying to play
-Good AI
-describing this game to my cute and old African proffessor for a paper.
- got a 90
- Costumes are cute AF
Cons: (Mostly minor)
- Matches are almost entirely in Chinese, but you can read the unit descriptions in main menu
- English translations are a bit rough (also a bit funny), not big deal
- the connections ooooh boi, playing with bots is fine, but playing with other people can be rough, guessing its cause me and my friend are in the states
Conclusion: Its F2P now so try it out!
Got game ages ago as I was grabbing anything touhou related, was astoundingly meh, everythings buggy, laggy and chinese got bored and left it. Since the world got fucked by the virus i went back to this game while combing my library and found that the game was not abandoned and the devs have been and still are churning out the updates. The game has improved greatly since it came out and in my opinion if it keeps this up will be one of the best touhou fangames availible and definitly worth keeping an eye on.
Side note: I bought this game and some point till when I started playing again it became free, I was given a bunch of premium currency as compensation, something that I would not have expected and shows that the devs are actually considerate of their players which scores double points for me.
For a long while i would have recommended this game. Chibi battles are fun to watch, touhou is a franchise that attracts alot of players and it's fun to build your Team with your favorite TH characters.
Why do i not recommend this game however?
Multiple Reasons.
1. The endless increase in greed of the developers.
We all know, nothing is free - developers want to make money, no problem.
They changed the reward system a couple of times wich resulted in a decrease of money you get in battle - twice.
No problem, i like grinding.
Then they increased the price of Units.
Okey... this is a bit annoying, but with enough grinding still doable.
Then they released paid DLC for more content.
Despite having already changed to a cash-shop model with several overpriced characters and skins they apparently need to sell DLC now aswell?
Felt a bit greedy to me.
The DLC is cheap and optional content though, so i tried to not be sad about it.
Then they introduced "master" minions , wich - in simple terms - means another price increase for the already somewhat grindheavy characters.
Might aswell play an EA game at this point x)
2. Performance, translation and bug issues.
The translation of the game is wonky at best and the performance has been stuttering even for better pc's for a long while.
Also this game has / had several bugs and connection / ping issues.
Some of them even prevented you to gain rewards from battles, what fun! (not)
3. Balancing mechanics.
I won't go into detail on that one, since every pvp game suffers from their own issues of balancing.
So i played THBBB since the very early beta and i'm very disappointed the way the Devs have gone with this game.
Maybe i shouldn't have expected something better from a chinese moba-style game anyways :(
Edit:
Newest patch just introduced "monthly-subscribtion" benefits. How desperate the devs are trying to milk their playerbase is really ridiculous.
very good game, with fair microtransaction model. very gentuse with in game cash. also the game play is fun and has depth and a great art style. i cant wait to see what the future will be like. only problem is that i think that some of the player chricters cost a little too much in game money (10,000 credits or 7 pound if you want to buy), however minons are a fair price and you can quickly earn most them.
the game is getting good support, and being Touhou, the music is really good.
score-9/10
The game has been greeting me with "login failed" at the initial loading screen for the past 2-3 years, rendering it unplayable.
Even after upgrading my setup the problem remains.
My old review from 2020:
So my opinion in short is that I love this game. Good job developers!
It manages to have great depth, strategy and combat rhythm while also being relaxing even in the more heated parts of a match.
Originally, this game wasn't fun.
I bought this game when it actually wasn't free. I also bought every DLC. And when I first played it, I set it down and never touched it again. It was a waste of money, plain and simple. However, I accidentally discovered the sudden update surge and felt obligated to try again.
And wow, did the developers fix it.
The game instantly feels smooth and interesting. I don't know what happened, but all of a sudden it feels really fun to actually play the game! Everything makes sense to me after touching it for two seconds, and that's not something that happened with the original version. Plus, the new progression system feels a lot better than what it once was. I didn't mind the old version, but the new one just really feels better.
I will not be asking for a refund, which the developers graciously handed everyone. I will be playing the game quite often and recommending it to friends. I want the developers to know that they've saved the game in my eyes. All I would ever want is a bigger variety in playable characters and more units. Even without that, the game is incredible.
Thank you for saving your game the way you did, devs. Keep being awesome.
Oh, and if there is some way I could help with absolutely no coding experience, let me know. I'd love to.
I don't know a ton about Touhou, however this game is very fun. It can get competitive in the online mode and the units are diverse and unique. I would recommend this game to Touhou fans, and anyone who likes real time strategy.
Don’t bother with this, it’s just a “free to play” game with a lot of grind and a in game cash shop.
I bought the game almost as soon as the game came to Steam. I also bought all the DLCs as they were announced. The game looked good and fun. The Devs were always updating and balancing units. I was confident that the game would only get better and so I didn’t play the game, I just waited for it to be closer to the finished product. I sure was dumb on all of these decisions.
Since December of 2019 the game took a weird turn, which I had a hard time believing, so I installed it to see. And it’s a free to play game now. All the DLCs were converted to in game cash, which is not enough to buy the same characters those DLCs unlocked. Also, the move to free to play made it so that the steam cards the game had are now unobtainable by idiots like me that just waited for the game to fully release.
I mean, the game in its core is still there. It’s grindier by what I can gather. I believe this turn will make it so the in game store will get more stuff, probably more characters even, and that’s not at all bad. But this isn’t what I paid for, so I feel cheated and regret my actions.
It’s a weird turn that makes me uneasy about future developments on this game… so don’t support this game as it is now, these Devs and this game don’t deserve your time…
Damn… and I really like the game play and art style… but there’s nothing more important than trust, and they broke it.
Game is not worth your time with the current grind and payshop prices. Currently you have to grind for 10 hours straight and win every single match to buy one of the most expensive units. Alternatively if you want to not grind and buy units with real money you are looking at some pretty absurd prices. To buy one of the most expensive units you have to spend $10. Previous character pack dlc for this game gave you 5 characters for $4. Now with this change the cheapest unit you can buy with real money is $2.50. I think the entire roster is around $200 if you wanted to buy them all with money, and there's still more on the way to make it even more expensive. In comparison other f2p games have lifetime passes for $30 which instantly gives you access to every unit currently in the game and in the future just for 1 purchase.
I understand the devs need to make money on the game but this change just killed the game. New f2p players will instantly see how steep the grind / paywall is and just quit before even giving the game an honest attempt. It's impossible to recommend friends or new players to this game in it's current state. The devs also refuse to implement character packs or season passes to make it more accessible.
So to summarize, in an attempt the monetize the game, the devs went too far to an extreme and made it a grindy hellscape that's not worth anybodies time. I can't recommend this to anybody unless they change the model or introduce character packs that wont murder your wallet.
Extremely not recomended to play!!! Don't even bother to look into this "game". At the beggining it was fun and all (I bought every DLC it had at that time when it wasn't FTP game), but then the donat made it worse. The more it updates - the more bugs it has (most of them are really critical and are making all the playing frustating and annoying). After the last adventure update (11.04.2020), I've lost a huge part of the completed dificulty levels. That was the last straw. So I'd enough of it already. OST it the worst that I've heard, those remixes are making my ears to wither. Of course, this "game" is so long in the BETA state, this will be a permenent state (it's now so popular, like in the other "FTP" games), but then it's just close and all. So there will be no full English version and Wiki. And finaly, the last DLC that you can buy, it's a total trash, instead of helping in Adventure Mode it's just making things much worse...
The most recent update has removed all previously acquired units from players (save DLC ones) and put them behind a grind and pay wall many times more expensive than the old way of acquiring units. For context, I have 104 hours on record, I played enough to have all the units several times over, I have all the unit skins, I even got the box set for the youmu skin and goodies (which I had to import!), so I'm clearly a enormous fan of the game. I loved it a lot, and had been anticipating the launch of this new store so that I could purchase the new skins and support the developers further, but instead they chose to remove *all characters* from everyone's inventory and hide them behind a grind and paywall so large that even I, a player who had enough ingame currency for all units a few times over, could not afford the full roster.
The price to obtain all units is going to be 1200 yaun/200$ usd so that's more or less the cost of the game now in real cash.
Do not get into this game until they make changes with how they operate their in-game store. I will of course update this review if they change things for the better. But as it is now, this is a very money-hungry game.
I'm hesitant to just dismiss it as greedy. It seems MyACG is just a small studio trying to survive. I think their mistake was trying to make money from what should've been just a doujin/fan game.
The current way the in-game store works is you need like US$200 to unlock all the characters, and there is no unlock all package unlike most other games. You can grind for it, but it will take literal months, for what is essentially a very repetitive game.
We voiced our concerns on their official Discord and the devs are listening but so far do not seem to want to really change how their store works, justifying that they need to make this change to stay afloat as a studio. I understand that, but we've been suggesting other ways.
The real problem is that their game is fun, but not fun enough to justify the lack of options you have early on until you're able to grind for more characters, who you aren't even sure you'll like or will work with your current roster btw, or shell out the cash needed to unlock them. The fun of the game before the change to the store came from the variety of units, the deep gameplay options you had. Practically all the units had pros and cons, which made you have to think hard about what units to use and how many to deploy at a time, given the limited resources you have. It was interesting and lead to a lot of metagaming and discussions on strategies. But all that was removed since almost nobody has enough characters to make interesting decks yet.
In short, avoid this game for now.
A simple and fun RTS. This game is quite basic so if you're looking for something way more in-depth you'll laugh at this game. However this game is really fun, especially if you're a fan of TouHou series. The game has 1vCpu with 3 lvls of difficulties, 1v1/2v2 casual matches, 1v1 ranked, & custom matches. All matches give you points in order to unlock more characters to fight with, so no p2w, which is awesome. Honestly besides being easy (at least against A.I.) the only thing missing is more translations for the game. I was able to figure everything out on my own, however more translations would be nice. There is much that can be build upon this game; with it only costing 6 bucks the game is fun enough and can pass the time. People complaining about the game not being f2p are just dumb. In closing....
A simple RTS, Touhou based game, easy to learn, needs better translations.
7/10 overall
[EDIT/UPDATE:]
Now that I've put way more time into this game and there have been quite a few update, I am happy to adjust my review for this game. So the Dev's have added more servers than just U.S. and China. They've added all of Asia and EU. Translation issue has been COMPLETELY FIXED. They've added more characters, another stage, and even fixed ranked mode and added ranked rewards. In all honesty this game has been improving more and more. A balance patch update, more content, and plenty of fixes whenever an issue pops up. The meta for this game is evolving into something awesome.
My new score 8.9/10
All that is needed is honestly a few more stages and more characters to use and this game will be a solid 10/10
For an early access game, it's really fun to play. Many teams can be made and all that is really left is to add the rest of the characters, the campaign and the English translations.
This game is great overall, great soundtrack, great gameplay and it's touhou.. \o/
The cons about this game is only the English translation is kinda poor, but I still manage to understand the game..
The multiplayer need some works since I'm pretty far from China or US, but the solo mode is still enjoyable.
Thank you for a great game and fast update.. (^.^)/
Rarely I will write a review for games. But I can't help it but to do it for this one. Rarely I am impress by an Early Access game. But this one seriously is very fun and extremely addictive. More optimization is needed that's for sure, but still really playable despite that. That's definitely not a complain as I understand this is still EA. Really cannot wait for more contents to be added and better optimization to come along. This game really have huge potential.
遊戲很棒, 超好玩. 只是需要更多优化, 還有更多遊戲內容的增加. 加油加油
