It was fun for a bit, but it becomes really boring once you realise the pattern in all the books: Reach the end with EXACTLY the items you need, or you lose. And there are also so many paths that just lead to insta-death for little reason, so you have to constantly save-scum. And you can't try to be smart and not take certain paths, because they might give you a critical item. It's honestly just a huge mess.
The devs did an amazing job at creating digital copies of these classic books. Added in some dice rolls, character sheets, inventory, background ambiance options and other nice features. If you never experienced "choose your own adventure" books in the past, these are still great to experience as a fan of rpgs and tabletop games. House of Hell breaks the usual formula and is instead a spooky haunted house story, highly recommended just to change up the routine of the other books. I haven't read a book in probably 25 years and this still pulls me in.
I really enjoyed these books then as of 1/12/2023 they all died. clicking on books installing options home button all completely and utterly useless now. Not sure what happened with the last update but none of the books work so I will wait to buy the last book appointment with Fear, if they fix it. Never seen anything like it.

Now in the digital age, Fighting Fantasy is still very much alive and kicking, 40 years on. May its STAMINA never fail and the luck of the gods go with YOU on the adventures ahead! YOU are the hero!
Really great port for anyone feeling nostalgic about the Fighting fantasy series
I'm loving the opportunity to go back and play again the adventures I've played as a kid. I still own a copy of some of the books but having them all here on steam is cool.
That being said, I understand that these adventures are not for everyone. If you enjoy reading a good story and saving the world, by all means try some of the books!
The "hardcore" challenge is definitely not for the faint of heart as, starting with AT MOST 10 skill is, in some of the books, almost prohibitive (like Bloodbones, Trial of Champions and Island of the Lizard King). Doable, yes, but not without its dose of pain.
I currently own 2 books (Trial of Champions and Bloodbones) and enjoyed them so far. Planning to buy the rest soon!
I thought I had lost these books from my grade school days forever. When I found the books in the store way back in the mid-80s I was instantly transfixed by the story, the artwork and the immersion that these kind of books give you. My parents then were happy to buy me more books in the series as it helps me develop my reading then and saw it as a positive impact. That it certainly was.
I was on a Twitch stream in very late 2021 and my mouth dropped as he was streaming one of the books from the series. Over 25 years later, here they are again in digital format!
I IMMEDIATELY headed to Steam and purchased the ENTIRE series within 10 minutes of seeing these again.
I can't recommend these books enough. If you are a fan of choose your own adventure books with a more substance, wonderful artwork and a compelling story, you've found the right series here. I could not be happier.
Five minutes into my first book, I was transported back to grade school and all the memories of that era. Thank you SO MUCH Steam for having this available! Kudos to whoever brought this to Steam!
[TL;DR: Gamebooks are good if you are a fan of the genre, the app kinda crap but not bad enough to prefer pen and paper, prefer standalone versions to DLCs]
These classic game books are quite good, sort of short and very simplified solo DnD campaign which you retry many times until able reach the end. Known for causing rename of Final Fantasy and for influencing Demon/Dark Souls.
But if you don't like classic DnD fantasy and don't have patience of a Dark Souls player, this stuff is likely not for you as well.
The app itself - not good.
These are text games with some pictures, could be done with HTML and some Javascript easily. But this is an Unity app that eats your CPU and discharges your laptop battery while only showing a static screen mostly filled with text. And it is full of bugs and has UI/UX problems. Buttons would sometimes stop working, content downloads freeze, "fast battles" setting reset to "off" or don't apply to special encounters, the automap is chaotic, icon placement often opposite to in-game directions, like "east" or "west". Controls are cumbersome.
Still way better that playing the books the normal way, throwing dice lots and lots of times, tracking battle progress and equipment/inventory with pen and paper.
Standalone versions of some of the gamebooks also being sold for almost the same price and have at least better automap.
Also some of the games exist on iOS.
Despite all the problems I listed, absolutely worth buying, but if somebody made a better version, I'd certainly advise to ignore this one.
Blood Bones, the book that comes with the "game" is absolutely terrible. The rest of the books range from below average to amazing, but Blood Bones is terrible. It has to be one of the most unfair, and at times utterly stupid, things I have ever encountered in the Fighting Fantasy series. A sham that it was this book they gave for free.
That being said, it being free... I can't really downvote this. Even if I wanted to.
It's like the old times. Well a little bit diferent, it's on the computer but I remember the old books I bought.
When I was 14, I used to play these games in the printed book version. I would play for hours and hours. Nowadays it is very difficult to find these printed books here in Brazil. For my happiness, I ended up finding here on steam the digital version. The mechanics are excellent and the quality with which the games were made is impressive. It is basically an ebook of the originals with the mechanics of data and calculations. Perfect!

it is a good game when you can have a big score but if you cant then u have to roll alot
it is a good game to play if u press the dice before they stop becose then u get a better score
in conclusion this games is a good game to play if you like textbooks
Its your childhood all over again! You can do the 4 finger redo (with the bookmarking function), the old-fashioned pencil-and-paper map notes, or go hardcore with make-your-choice-and-pray methods of choosing your path. The client lets you do tap rerolls or you can let the numbers fall where they may for your dice rolls. There's even some nice background music and ambience tracks to accompany your reading. The character sheet keeps track for you, so no editing is needed on your part. You can just sit back and enjoy your adventures through these classic solo gaming books.
Fighting Fantasy Classics are a good value for the money. You get all the books for a great price, but the question is whether it's worth the time. If your thing is to take meticulous notes mapping your trail, have lots of RNG battles and get very little guidance what to do then you may like these books. I played through Warlock of Firetop Mountain and it was interesting for about 20 minutes until I got stuck in a page number maze where I kept clicking on different page numbers and ending up back in the same spot. Then I finally get out and defeat the Dragon and meet and defeat the Wizard... only to find I need 3 keys to win the game and I only have 2. So i get the message that I failed and need to start over. At this point I had zero interest in replaying this or going to an earlier save point to try and find the third key. There's only so many "Do you go X direction? or search for a secret door?" messages I can take. I may try one more to see if it's any different but I was not impressed with the first one.
Right, out of my love for the classic Fighting Fantasy books I have ended up buying your releases twice, Tin Man games partly out of stupidity and partly out of the hope that you will eventually release more in the original series. I have done my bit, now it's your turn, chaps!
Fun books I read through as a teen. combat system is faithful to the original books. A nice stroll down memory lane
Honestly its just a blast from the past playing these books again, only thing is the unlimited bookmarks make cheating just that bit too easy....if you were limited to say 5 or 10
Game may feel more like a game but unlimited bookmarks is like playing God mode
but other than that ...Good stuff
Had like 20 odd of the books when i was younger, these are just as good.
First time replaying warlock of firetop mountain:
after a hard fought battle against Zagor (the warlock), being brought to 1 stamina, I landed the last hits to bring the master of the mountain. Upon entering his chambers and finding his chest is came face to face with the grim reality, i didnt have any of the keys needed to open is chest. Thus ended my story, having slain my foe only to fail with no hope of ever succeeding.
I Forgotten how much fun these books make failure.
Love these classic interactive books. I remember when they first came out in the 80s. I hope the entire collection will soon be available on Steam to enjoy. Thank you for making this possible Tin Man Games.
My childhood revisited 35 years later! Simple and basic, bt very functional ports of the adventure series that bears the same name. A few minor bugs here and there, but overall a superlative experience providing you understand what the product is before buying it.
