El Hijo - A Wild West Tale –

a stealth game with very good mechanics. story is a bit convoluted but it was fun to go trough it.
Great artstyle and soundtrack, decent gameplay that lacks some depth. The levels keep getting better the more you progress.
El Hijo is a breath of fresh air when it comes to wanting a puzzle stealth/escape chill adventure. What caught my eye were the beautiful stylistic graphics. I particularly love the way you can control your character in a detailed overtop terrain with a lot of detail and things to explore. Runs great on my SteamDeck too (forgot which Proton I used but it works), the controls respond perfectly. I really like that you can "get caught" or "lose a life" so to speak, and the game resets you to your last checkpoint and you can continue from there, it doesn't end the game. Since I am not that good at games, I had to scour YouTube for a couple of hints, but no big deal. For the sale price, definitely worth it for my taste in puzzle games.
There is a bug where El Hijo's mother can constantly moan.
El Hijo was a nice game with a simple story.
Gameplay isn't too complicated.
Music didn't make a lot of impression on me, but did accompany the game well.
Simple characters.
At the end the game gets a little bit repetitive, but one you'll continue playing.
Would recommend.
Finished the game in 9 hours. Overall enjoyed this game and I think it totally worth the time I put in. It does a nice job of introducing new mechanics in a fair pace.
The progression of difficulty is okay, could be improved as I think the later levels are too simple. The devs seem to increase the difficulties by putting the save points further apart, but I think the puzzles should designed to be harder instead.
Regarding the negative reviews, I personally haven't encountered any game breaking bugs so I guess the devs must have fixed a lot of those since the game launched. I've only encountered 2 bugs that requires me to restart a level, both pretty minor as I wasn't that far into the level so I'm not loosing tons of progress.
I bought El Hijo for the amazing art style and found the gameplay to be really enjoyable as well. It's rather on the easy side but you'll encounter new obstacles and gadgets quite regularly and getting to switch to another character every once in a while also helps keeping the gameplay fresh. Also loved the music, it really helps bringing the western setting to life. The non-violent gameplay approach was a nice touch and works well in the story.
Only complaints I have are the controls which can be a bit unresponsive and I had two bugs where I had to restart the level due to the character being stuck. While it's not a big deal since the levels are quite short, it would have been nice to have the options to go back to the last save point instead.
Nonetheless, I really enjoyed playing El Hijo and recommend giving it a try.
Really strong aesthetic, but the AI and "game feel" isn't there. 30 minutes in and the gameplay is already incredibly repetitive and mundane. Also, as the other reviews have mentioned there are bugs for sure even early on. I got softlocked twice in my short playtime. Once while opening a hatch on the first level, and then again after talking to the first child.
For 20$ you could also get "Metal Gear Solid V - Phantom Pain" or "Ground Zero", as well as "Inside", And I would suggest you do that instead if you are looking for a great game with stealth elements.
Yet another one of those games where I wish we had a neutral rating, or informational like curators have. The game idea and gameplay loop are awesome, the problem comes with technical stuff, it's unpolished, janky and straight up broken at times.
My game broke on the very first level with enemies first time I played it, then it kept happening pretty frequently throughout with other levels as well. There's an issue when you complete a level, your character just stands at the exit and the prompt is gone, as you already pressed it to "complete" it. So you can now restart the whole level, enemies will also not see you in this state so you can't go back to a checkpoint either, as you have to "die" in order to do that. Enemies have preset routes they follow, or certain angles they turn, which will randomly change for whatever reason when you get caught and get sent back to a checkpoint, making some parts virtually impossible to do without again, restarting the level. This soon becomes very tedious, especially as it wipes all of the level progress, even "collectibles". This also makes some of the achievements, like finish the whole game without being seen, way more difficult, because you cannot affect how enemy AI will react and if they will break or not at some point.
The game usually follows the very reasonable learning curve where it gives you a new item or a tool and then teaches you how to use it on the most basic setups as it ramps up to more difficult ones. Problem is, sometimes a certain setup is encountered only once in the entire game, so you'll most likely not know what the game wants you to do, there are also enemies immune to getting stunned or moved by noise, so you'll have to learn a lot on your own without any hints or tips. Some personal things that bother me is not being able to use crouch anywhere, but only when against a wall or inside tall grass and with all the jank going on, you'll sometimes get spotted because character isn't pixel perfectly aligned to said wall so you can't engage "crouch".
Final escape sequence was also very bad, you're supposed to ride a cart through swirly railway while being chased by enemies, so you can't slow down, but also having rocks drop on top of you, for which you sometimes have to slow down. This was never used in the game before, but now it does and it's absolutely horrible. You get sent back to a checkpoint in the beginning of all of this so you have to do it all over again even if you fail at the very end of the sequence.
A cherry on top is achievements are not working as they should, either they pop in game and not on Steam, until you turn the game off, or they pop in game and never on Steam, even after turning the game off.
For these reasons I'd rather give give it a neutral rating until and if they fix it, in the contrary I'd just not recommend it at all, but since that's not the case, I'll give it a positive rating with a warning that you should only buy it on steep discount and not expect much from it, unless they do intend to fix some of these fundamental issues.
This really is the type of game I love, but this is just so full of bugs, that it is unplayable. First bug I encountered was when I needed to crouch at the scare crows. It just did not want to crouch. Then, after a restart it worked. Second bug was when I needed to open the hatch to go to the second level. It opened, but the character did not go in. I was stuck there and pressing "E" just resulted in a sigh from the character. Another restart. The third bug, in level 2, was when I inspired the child. The game went in "movie" mode, but just did not come out of that anymore. That was when I decided to quit. It needs more bugfixing.
I would highly recommend this game to anyone who just wants something to I guess relax in, this game was very much worth the purchase and it was really fun to complete :), I really enjoyed the puzzle solving and trying to figure out how to use the very few items they give you to avoid being seen, I really enjoyed the game :D
I really want to like this game. It's pretty low-key and looks amazing. It's a great premise storywise, and the gameplay is right up my alley too. But in an hour of playing, I've encountered three bugs that left me frozen so that I had to restart the level. There are enough save points where this isn't too bad on its own; however, the controls and movement seemed "sticky" or unpolished, where I couldn't always tell if the problem was me, the hardware, or the game. And hey, I'm not always great at games, but the level design (winding and somewhat unclear) and the story/objectives (why are we talking to the other kids?) didn't really draw me in enough to where I wanted to keep going.
Good game.
As it stands, it's a fun, kiddie Western game. Since I'd partial to the Wild West, having been born and raised in it, it reminds me of my own childhood as a Mexican anime child.
The art style is great and there's a surprising amount of effort put in the animation quality, the environments and the setting. But therein lies the conundrum for buying this game right now.
The price is simply too steep for something that you'd probably play once on a relaxing weekend. And it's painful to write this as I bet the studio hired a lot of expensive and great artists to make this and will have to make money off it, but considering the game only has about 30 reviews right now, it's fair to say the price hasn't attracted too many people.
If the game was 5-6 euro, I'd say buy it on the spot.
I kinda expected more, the dynamics were quite repetitive... but it was still as adorable as a kitten.
The animations look strange, the music in the cutscenes seems disconnected to the emotions and actions portrayed and I encountered a glitch in the first level, where opening the hatch left me stuck.
It's in the middle. It's definitely not bad, it's just not great. Absolutely loved the art style. I'd say consider picking it up but on sale but maybe be warned of the pacing being too rigid? Too slow? Just couldn't get myself to want to play any longer.
I liked this game quite a bit. The non-violent stealthing is casual and fun. The cartoony art style is pretty well done, especially the cut scenes. And the spaghetti western setting is new and refreshing (at least for me). There are unfortunately still some bugs that need to be fixed, but it's otherwise very enjoyable. 7/10
I am not sure yet.
I will say it is probably a fun game for kids... but...
I only played this game for about 90 minutes.
It is not bad, but so far, it is not very exciting.
Presumably it will get better with time.
That being said, the controls are not like any game I have ever played using a keyboard. You are playing in the 3rd person, but with a camera view that is off center, in front of you , looking back at you (look at some of the screenshots). This is a requirement, as you need to be able to see everything around you... but it makes controlling your character quite difficult. to that end... I have only played 90 minutes in over a month and can't muster the will to try again until i get a controller.
I will update as time goes on.
Just know that this is a stealth game where you are not taking out any enemies. This is purely sneaking by unnoticed.
Beautiful game... Everything i expected it to be. Only downside is a lot of bugs which force me to restart levels, especially the longer levels. Not a deal breaker for me though, the good outweighs the bad easily.
Ultimately, I recommend this game, but with some caveats.
I learned about this game in the desperados III discord, but gameplay-wise, those two don't have much in common. Somewhat easy stealth game (took me about 6 hours to clear it while inspiring all the children) with a handful more difficult spots. You'll rarely have to worry about finding a spot to hide or wondering how to get through a corridor that has 5 patrolling bandits with intersecting routes. All levels are about getting to the end of the level, and although you may sometimes wonder WHERE the end of the level it, you're usually steered in the correct direction, and there are usually multiple paths you can take to get there. The game's cute, the art style is agreeable, the music has a nice heavy Morricone vibe.
Whatever gripes I have with the game can probably be patched out as most of them are about the controls; crouching is often a pain in the ass and is not as snappy as one would hope (there seems to be a delay of quite a few seconds after standing (after a crouch) before you can crouch again, how close you need to be in order to properly crouch seems to change all the time, sometimes you can't even tell if you're crouching and hit spacebar again only to stand up and get detected), the toggled aiming is really a preference thing, but I've always preferred "hold to aim" control schemes and having to learn how to deal with a different mode on the fly lead to some frustration (and ignore the in-game tips saying that you can hold Q to aim, it's really a "hold Q to toggle aim until you fire, but if you don't want to fire after all, you need to toggle out manually" kind of thing). On multiple occasions, I clicked out of the fullscreened game WHILE trying to aim and shoot. Outside of the controls, there are some things that have annoyed me that seem to be bugs more than anything else, such as enemies occasionally not going through their pathing/viewcone routine until I'd reloaded the game (via getting caught) a number of times, or when I noticed that I'd lost some ammunition for my rockets 'cause I hit the checkpoint spot, but the thing I'd destroyed with my last rocket didn't stay destroyed through a reload, so I had to come up with a new strat to get through a bandit.
So like I said, I ultimately recommend this game, but maybe wait a bit for the first couple of patches to come out.
I played about an hour last night and had a lot of fun. The art style is really impressive and the stealth so far has been challenging while also remaining low stress (lots of places to hide and plan your next move, as opposed to the sort of stealth game where you're never "safe"). Looking forward to see how it develops as levels progress, but already enjoying my time enough to give it a solid recommendation!
So I think this might be my first ever review:
I'm moved to write it by the pleasure of playing this game for a couple of hours.
The art, level design, art direction, and music are exceptional. There's a consistent visual and auditory aesthetic which really works to tell the story through the characters, and the game oozes atmosphere. It's gorgeous.
Gameplay wise it's an excellent combination of simple and complex: the premise is fairly straightforward; sneak around obstacles (monks in the first few levels as you escape a monastery). The way it's executed is intuitive and gradually adds layers of complexity and interest: you sneak around monks reading, doing washing, cleaning, cooking, and learn more and more ways to interact with the environment as you go. I'm a couple hours in, and it gets more challenging without getting frustrating.
I'd recommend it to anyone who feels like being transported to the Old West with tasteful art direction, music, engaging level design, and gameplay that is fun and challenging (and without having to murder everything you see; despite the clear inspiration from Jodorowsky's El Topo this is a refreshingly non-violent game).
