Neat little anime game, I loved the characters and the story.
Combat feels a bit clunky at times.
Everything about this game is cool but I am having trouble with dying because of the camera angles in fights
Outdated graphics. Messy story. Bad translation. Terrible voice acting. Lackluster combat system. Horrible and I do mean horrible camera. A really dumb and out of the blue difficulty spike near the end.
And still had tons of fun with the game. It's inspirations in DMC, Kingdom Hearts and Dark Souls show. It has a very big scope and it fails to capture all that it tries to do, but the diamond in the rough is there.
The idea to give you freedom in how to chain your combos is nice, too bad you don't have enough moves for it to really come together.
Weapon variety is basically just a stat boost, by the end I only had two swords that could change my game plan in being either physical or magical, but the touch was nice.
The fights in closed areas are a struggle against the camera, there are enemies that you can onlhy hit in the air, but your combo does not fully connect.
This game is full of jank.
It also has a lot of personality, it's earnest in what it's doing, even if it gets cringy at times. Really looking forward to the next one.
Yeah, don't recommend it... tried to finish it but had to rage quit which for me is rare. Just badly balanced enemies who spam cheap unavoidable moves over and over again at faster than reaction speeds. All adding up to a deeply frustrating jank-fest. Too many projectiles, too much AOE, no real gap closer on certain enemies/bosses, bad aerial combat. Difficulty is all over the place. The feeling you get playing this game is like fighting a CPU on Street Fighter who only spams low kicks then teleports when you get close and switches up to hadoukens.
A significant upgrade over the main game in almost every aspect. I say "main game" and not "previous game" because this game is not a sequel, but a retelling from Nameless' perspective. Think of it like the Jetstream Sam DLC for Revengeance.
Nameless feels better to use with more tools to play around with (Bearer & Ergo both felt very samey to me despite being separate characters) and you feel that you're actually dealing damage to enemies! He's also a lot faster than B&E, he's running automatically and you can travel further by his VERY long distance assault and dodge moves, making backtracking a lot more bearable.
Since this game is pretty much an expansion pack some stages from the main game make an appearance with slight changes. For example the cathedral level is now burning and there are new puzzles you must solve to progress. Some enemies and bosses come back from the main game too, but there are also some new ones present. The content's recycled in a way that doesn't bore you to death and i appreciate it. Though i would've liked it if they did more with the original content they have. I was really looking forward to have more of the first Nowhere puzzle where you find stage pieces and essentially create your own stage, but sadly that's a one-and-done thing.
Considering only three people worked on both games the end results are very surprising. Looks like they took a few lessons from the main game too. Really looking forward to their future games, hoping the best for them.
Stylish and challengeful hack and slash action RPG.
Definitely a hidden gem among indie games.
買了好久終於想到,今天開起來玩
結果一進去,畫面都黑漆漆的,雖然還勉強看的到敵人
但讓玩家調個畫面亮度很難嗎,都不知道要往哪走了 = =
Awsome story a bit harder than the bearers game.
Hooked after playing Gate of memories. liked this one too :)
The Nameless Chronicles plays much like its predecessor in regards to hack and slash and magic attacks. Despite that, I prefer the way Nameless moves and operates compared to The Bearer and Ergo. The story runs parallel with the first game, with that in mind there are fewer bosses and less to do as far as content. However, that doesn’t mean it is not as good as the first one. The same still cutscenes and OK dialogue are still present with much of the music being used from the first game. There are a few new tracks that I was really a fan of and really had me catching some feels in the tender moments of the story.
The majority of the new content is about 12 new bosses and 3 new areas. You will fight some old bosses that Nameless will come across on his own terms. Traversing through the older areas is almost identical minus some enemy placement. Your intentions as Nameless is what breaks up the monotony of the older content. The combat while similar is just as fast and chaotic as the first. Even on easy, you are not safe and really need to be able to pick up on cues from enemies and bosses. Some are just ruthless and you almost need to replace dodging with moving to avoid some attacks.
A notable downside is a bug that will make you immune to fall damage and traps. It will essentially make your character unrecoverable from instant death instances. For example, you usually take a small amount of damage and return to the platform you were on if you fall off, this bug negates that entirely and allows you to fall indefinitely. It will also allow you to not be affected by environmental traps such as spikes or giant swords swatting out from the walls. The major annoyance here is a particular boss battle that is situated upon a smaller circular platform when one part of the boss fight involves a lot of knockback inducing moves. Normally restarting the game fixed this issue, and I dealt with it about 3 times.
Overall, I enjoyed Nameless’ story and wrapping up the loose ends from the first game. Is it worth $20? I would argue $15 due to it being somewhat short compared to the original. My first run took about 10 to 12 hours to get through. Recommend getting this discounted if you want to continue down the Anima journey, though if you’re a fan of the series I could justify you paying $20 for it.
This is more linear and shorter than the first game, but other than that it's still solid and fun. Though this time you got a new meter resource instead of Mana, which is called Thanatos. When used it powers up your abilities to have different properties and such. Overall I would recommend the first game over this one, but if you've already played that one then this still worth buying.
As with the previous game, if you have ~200 FPS or more, the mouse sensitivity might be too low even on the fastest settings, as it was for me, but I solved it by limiting the frame rate of the game to 150.
Anima Gates of Memories the first was fun, the port was fine, this one is but a hassle, difficulty isn't balanced, fights are repetitive, moves are not as interesting as the first, and it's way less fun to play, plus it's glitchy while the first was flawless... I'd recommend you play the first opus but leave this one... There's nothing exciting about it.
So, from the first moment I had a bad vibe about this game, and after finishing it I can confirm it.
While the game have a couple of positive points (like the OST and the backstory of the main character) it has way too many cons.
I won't talk about the reused content or the reused bosses from the previous game, since I didn't play it and everything was fresh for me, but the structure of the game itself is bad, and I'm being nice.
The main focus of the game is the combat, and it's the worst part of the game itself. The game revolves around this idea: you can either attack melee or "cast" ranged spells, dealing physical or magic damage, and many enemies are either resistent to one or the other. The problem lies when an enemy is resistent to magic, since many enemies aren't balanced at all, leaving no room for melee attacks without losing hp, so you can either trade the damage or stay ranged an take a loooooong time to kill.
The thanos mechanic is interesting on it's own, but it has flaws, like you can't regenerate it if you attack a blocking enemy, and guess what you need to break the guard? the thanos itself.
Then there is the worst part of the combat at all: the aerial fighting. I've never seen a so bad designed aerial fights in a videogame. In theory you can dodge while in the air, in reality tho you will just smash the ground most likely being hit, so once again, stick to magic.
Another thing is the rewards, both experience and items you get from exploring aren't well balanced at all. A couple of examples: a somewhat hard boss rewards 300xp, an easy as heck boss rewards 1500xp. I mean...
For items is even worse, I remember being hyped for a weapon I got from a sidequest that was way stronger than the one I was using, and like 3 minutes later I got one even stronger just from progressing in the main story.
To conclude:
While it has a couple of good things, the game isn't worth both your time and your money. It's a frustrating experience that adds nothing new to the genre, you are better off with any other game.
It is a great side-story to the previous game. It is shorter and the puzzles and bosses are somewhat easier but it is an enjoyable ride.
what in the actual f....
first boss the inquisitors its like playing oldschool tekken with a 7yr old, no matter what fancy moves i pull or how much i dodge i will get hit i will die and will lose. im out
if you have spent money on a mouse with extra buttons you cannot use them to keybind either.
PROS:
can't think of any
CONS:
• Lots of reused content
• Fullscreen effects like red or white flashes aren't optimized for >1080p. You get a colored square instead.
• This game feels more like a DLC than a full game. Therefore it's overpriced
VERDICT: 5/10
I bought this because "Anima: Gate of Memories" wasn't half bad. But The Nameless Chronicles are a joke. It uses a lot of areas, enemies and even Bosses from the previous game. Only buy this one if you are a super fan of the first one.
Combat's not very fluid,
Story couldn't be less interesting,
World design makes me want to vomit.
Not outright the worst game ever, but even on sale I don't feel like it's worth $5.
First, if you haven't played Anima: Gate of Memories, don't even bother looking at this game. None of the story will make any sense and the difficulty starts more or less where the first game left off (and they're both on the harder end). Don't mind my hours. I played the game through on Switch. My hour of gameplay on PC revealed no technical issues.
This game is basically a stand-alone expansion of the first game (. Being that it reuses a significant portion of the areas and enemies from the first game, this feels overpriced. But if you liked the original game, you'll like this one.
Overall, it is a weaker entry than the first since several of the coolest mecahnics are removed or lessened. The biggest of these is that you now only have one character. This means:
1. Less leveling and cusomizing options.
2. Less versatility in combat with less move options.
3. No health balancing between the characters, which I really loved in the last game.
You also only get to equip one weapon, which makes most weapons useless as soon as you get an upgrade.
Still, the core of the game is very similar and still works very well in this game. I was worried that the story wouldn't be as good since it is an alternate perspective on the original story. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was almost as good as on the first.
Anima: Gate of Memories - The Nameless Chronicles
More linear, than the first game, but still engaging action.
The story takes place at the same time and place as Gate of Memories from the perspective of one of the antagonists, the Nameless. There are new locations, as well as the ones, presented in GoM. Instead of the Link system, there is Thanatos. It allows to power-up and sometimes alter attacks. Different equipment is visible on the character. Puzzles are interesting, platforming sections are rare and much easier, than in GoM. The soundtrack and graphics are good, the controls are responsive and customizable, but there are no on-screen prompts for keyboard nor 5-button mouse support.
My review for Anima: Gate of Memories.
With the Nameless Chronicles it would simpily be showing you a different perspective of the events that has transipried within the Towers along with giving you a backstory to a onimous character you rarely encounter known as 'the Nameless' or 'Immortal' (ironic that he dies and dosen't have infinite HP, smh) and will traverse the towers as him as well as learn about his past.
For those who've playen Anima: Gates of Memories it's not just recycled assets doing the entire same thing, while yes that's inevitable (since it's taking place in the same tower), new stuff would also be introduced.
Gameplay wise it feels like your 'generic' hack n' slash, nothing too cluncky with combat etc. all seem smooth (my opinion).
For new players looking what to play this or just Anima: Gate of Memories, it dosen't matter both of these stories happens simultainously within the same day/time etc. You're just given a different character perspective so start with either ^.^
I actually like these sorts of games because they make me feel good. It's not your AAA title or AA title and it really doesn't need to be, because it's only concerned with telling a story and having fun. I have fond memories of the PS2 era of action platformers and action/adventure games and this title is a callback to that for me. I like it and recommend it.
My only complaint at the time of this review is that there are very minor, almost entirely missable collision issues with the geometry, which almost got me stuck on the first few levels.
