"Turn darkness to light, weakness to strength."
Some call it a neon paradise, but in reality, Cyan City is a hell on earth where the strong prey on the weak. Rays of sunlight seldom breach the thick smog of pollution looming over the city, creating an endless night where the criminal underworld never sleeps.
Jeong Moon had lost everything and everyone. Living in the slum district, she was barely scraping by. Finally pushed to her breaking point, she wanted to leave it all behind. Instead she was pulled even deeper into the belly of the beast and forced to become a member of the Yakuza.
Within their ranks, working to conceal her true identity, she would catch the attention of a dangerous and tormented yakuza leader - Yuki Yamaguchi - a man who had nothing left except his inner demons. To survive in his world, she would have to face her deepest fears and give in to her darkest desires...

Love where this is heading - it's extremely emotive, intriguing. It is a little slow development-wise but every release is worth the wait - the story quality is very high.
The story has a great deal of potential but I purchased this back in 2018 and there are only 3 chapters... keep this on your wishlist but I wouldn't recommend purchasing at the moment. I will update if/when things change.
Edit: As of Aug 2023 (released in April 2023) there are now 4 chapters. Still, this is really really slow. Again, I've had this VN since 2018. If you really want to read something new or support the author then sure go ahead but I'd suggest checking back if/when this is fully released. I still wish the author luck and success. I'll change my review if I see more communication and progress.
Edit Part 2: As of April 8th 2024 Chapter 6 has been released. I'm happy the author is doing well and updating the VN but I'll keep my review as Not Recommenced for now (I'll wait to see how long it takes for chapter 7 and then I may change to recommend) as I purchased this in 2018 and there are still only 6 chapters with a very long wait in between.
However, if you are patient and willing to support the author I'd suggest getting it on sale. Or keeping a close eye on it. The story from what I remember, it's been a while, is quite good and the art is lovely.
I got this game because: I was curious about visual novels, the art style looked interesting, I like futuristic settings, and I wanted a story told in a way that had a female audience in mind. I feel satisfied with my choice. The story and the characters have pulled me in so far and I'm curious to find out what happens next. There was an enjoyable amount of tension and building of relationships. I really like the art style and the overall color palette. The music and sound effects did a good job with helping set the tone. The rainy scenes were kinda relaxing despite what was happening. The touch of animation on some of the scenes and character portraits added to the mood or intensity of the scene. It also helped bring the characters to life. As of right now, the game is early access with 3 chapters so far, but I checked their social media and it's still being worked on. No idea how many chapters there will be, but I'm ready for whichever ones drop. I suck at writing reviews, lol, but wanted to show support.
Awesome start to a visual novel! The story line is complex and interesting and the choices are realistic and believable. After completing the chapters available I am definitely left wanting to discover more.
The art style is not 100% my cup of tea, but I have to say that the world that has been created is very immersive and I applaud you for all the details you have managed to insert!
People are complaining about the lack of updates. PLEASE READ THE UPDATE ABOVE AND ON TWITTER. The game dev has had a baby and was adjusting to her new life routines (I know this as I had a son myself in 2018 and it ain't easy breezy!) Good things come to those who wait and I actually respect Yume more for not rushing and making a sloppy job of it. Please support her by buying this game.
Dear Yume, first of all, CONGRATS! I hope you enjoy your precious time with your little one! Please take your time as it goes by soooo quickly. I look forward to the future releases of Yakuza Kiss. All the best from my little family to yours :D
It is a fantastic game with a great story, if you ignore the lack of save options (only auto save is currently implemented).
The reason I'm giving this a 'no, please don't buy' is because none of us have heard from the developer since January. It's been 8 months without any news, no response to contact and no updates.
If this game is ever complete, I will come back and change my review, but until that time I strongly urge that you do not buy. You'll only be disappointed by the incomplete content.
okay, so I started playing this game because I love yakuza stuff and know way too much about the yakuza,
and I have to say, what seemed rather "semi-pro" at first to me due to the-start and comic art and many "she did this and that..." type of writing, actually surprised me a lot. regardless of my own preferences of (art style etc. )
this game is definitey great to play and has a great bgm & sfx system.
moreover it reminds me a lot of psycho-pass, so if you like psycho-pass. you probably gonna like yakuza kiss too.
either way I look forward to read more of this and wish the developers much luck to make it big and popular.
Around 8 months since the last chapter, feels like this game has been abandoned. It's a interesting game but the wait is terrible.
This visual novel is among the best I have read so far. I wish they don't drop quality and keep up good work till the end. This is the first time, I ever comment on a game at steam. I moved by the fact that so little comment this game received eventhough it is quality. I hope this comment be a little contibution. Hoping to see interesting and good quality more chapter release as soon as possible.
This - Yakuza Kiss - is a hidden little gem.
The story has good pacing. The art grows on you. You can tell the dedication the dev put into this with FX, every scenes feel carefully crafted, it either make you feel guilty, damned or fluffly.
The protagonist is relatable if you are more into the dark side, no more naive, cheerful female lead, no more miracle girl.
But don't let that dissuade you from buying this game, my fellow otome fans. It's sad, it's dark, it's depressing but the warmth you find through illusions and your "boss" makes it worth fighting for a little longer after all.
For now, it's still Early access so there is little to read and lacking some basic functions in a visual novel game (Text speed etc...)
With the second chapter released today, i can finally say- that i really do enjoy this game. Like im just so eager for chapter 3!!!. Who does not want more Jeong or Yuki ;-) But neverless, great work pink potion, keep up the good work! I will be rooting for you <3
A really intriguing game so far. I am excited at the idea of having only one romantic interest in an Otome. As much as I love choice, this gives the game much better opportunity to fully flesh out this relationship. Also, it'll be interesting to see how player choice effects the story, possibly in ways outside of the main romantic plotline.
This is very short as of yet. I was disappointed when it ended! The themes are dark and heavy and the setting immediately leaves an impression. I think a lot of players will be able to sympathize with some of what Jeong is going through right away, setting her aside from the common shallow player-insert or overly pure otome protagonist. Art and music help set the stage quite nicely and this early chapter is well paced. I was engrossed, and usually VNs take some time to catch my full attention.
So far my only concern is the text being difficult to read in some areas. During the scene in the "Megamart", the background image is very bright, behind a neon aqua text box with skinny white text. Perhaps I am showing my age a little, but I squinted to read the text during this scene. I didn't have a problem beyond this part as the backgrounds were much darker everywhere else, creating more contrast. I would appreciate if the dev added some options for the text size, font, or text box color.
I like the game very much, the aspect of a dark story that surounds on 1 person is a bit new for me. Personally i like the idea that you make a story for the love between the main characters. Find it daring and good that there is mature content. Most games are not like that, or it is in Japanese or Chinese main language.
If you ever want to try to crawl in the skin of someone involved in a mafia gang. And am a sucker for a love story but not the cinderella type that it is only smuchy and sweet. Go for it, this game for what i read is a good story, that pulls you in and after the first chapter you curse all people because you cant read anymore and you are here with us waiting for the next chapter.
My note help us help the makers the early purchase makes it easyer for the developer to hire more staff and to make this game easy fast and adoreable to read. Also read it with lights off dark story needs to be read in the dark, it highlights your senses :)
The only negative i have about this game is IT'S NOT FINISHED, but i must be patient.
I really love the moving sprites, the way they move and breath, everyone is beautiful and i'm so enamored with this world. everything is beautiful, it really has a a cool feel. uhh i'm really bad a reviews, but i love this game.
Purchasing a game in the “Early Access” development is a risk because sometimes the developers don’t complete it. I was searching for an otome visual novel to read, so I decided to give Yakuza Kiss a try! The story begins with a passionate scene with Jeong Moon and her lover, but it is cut abruptly to another scene about her life. I really thought the introduction is a great hook to capture the audience’s attention. Jeong Moon works in the retail industry who seems to “love” her job. Cho doesn’t believe his friend. His words connected to me. “How can she be smiling?” Her actions contradict how she truly feelings. Cyan City is heaven to others, but it’s a living hell to the main character-- full of darkness, painful memories, and mental issues.
Before you dive into the story, there’s a warning for mature content. Take it seriously. I had to step away from the game a few times because it triggered some recurring events of my circumstances. I felt relatable to the Jeong Moon. Describing her mental state was well-written. I love the features—animated characters, karma system, soundtrack, backgrounds, and the comic book style illustrations enhances the experience. The vn doesn’t focus on a multiple love interests branching into different routes instead it’s a complicated storyline centering Yuki Yamaguchi and Jeong Moon. It can also benefit the plot to have happy, lighter moments to maintain a balance. However, you don’t want to lose what captivated the audience. Great storytelling. The gameplay is about 1-3 hours depending on fast you read. Since it’s in the early stage, there are things lacking such as no manual save, skip button, no backlog…The game has an autosave feature which it’ll automatically save.
Should you purchase Yakuza Kiss? It’s very high quality. The developers who made the vn put a lot of effort into it. The price will increase once more chapters will be released. Of course, the chapters are free. No DLC, no additional costs! I hope to see a CG gallery in a future update and a save button. I don't regret buying it now. Seriously. We need more vns like this. So what are you waiting for?
I played the early Access first chapter.
Its a visual novel with a lot of choices.
What i liked:
+ the world building. the setting is great
+ compelling story
+ character is great and you see a Story Arc building
+ you strive for more and really get hooked up into
+ more choices than expected (not sure how they would play out, i mean how much impact it would really have)
+ very polished (especially for an early access game)
+ great graphics and atmosphere. you get a bit of a cyberpunk / blad runner vibe
the -
not much to complain as everything works and the story is obviously still int the works.
regarding the chapter1 story, i had bit issues with a drama component of the mistaken identity which is stretching my suspension of disbelief over the edge. i wrote the developers (below the lewd gamer article) about it and we´ll see if our feedback during early access has some impact.
in any way this shouldnt hold you back as this story looks very promising indeed. :3
So far so good! I bought this game for $9 as a "risky investment" (not that risky), with only four reviews and only one chapter out. This is a one of a kind game (so far) and I'm excited to see where it goes. I don't review a lot, but I really think people should give this story a chance and fund the devs. There's obviously a lot of care and creativity and I highly appreciate it. I can't wait for the next chapter release!
Edit:
I'm pretty disappointed in the lack of updates. It's been nearly six months since the last chapter (2) and it was multiple months before that. I completely understood that it was early access, I had no qualms about the game, but I'm really left hanging about the future of this game. I wouldn't recommend people get it right NOW just because I don't see any progress and it would be frustrating to get two chapters of this great game and have to wait a year or more to see anything else.
Edit 2: Over a year of no updates, DO NOT PURCHASE
Edit 3: It took two years, but chapter 3 has arrived! If things return to a normal enough schedule, I would wholeheartedly recommend this VN.
Great graphics, sound effects/tracks.
Setting is unusual (at least, for western), pretty dark. It's low on content (playtime is ~1-3h depending on your reading speed and if you want to see different decisions), some regular VN features are missing.Updates are taking quite a bit of time, but I cannot say, that they're not worth it.
If you're wondering if it's abandoned because last update was X months ago, it's not. Devs are just prefer to tell news on their patreon. I can recommend this game but keep in mind that this is a long term investment, as I already said, there's not enough content right now.
Edit: Updated for second chapter
I just played through the first chapter and oh.. my.. god.. is this an amazing game so far. The story is dark and engaging. I love heavy Blade Runner inspired setting. The music and sound effects are on point. The cinematography for the cut scenes are delicious and the artwork is beautiful and interesting. I can't wait to see the future chapters. Thank you guys so much for your work on this!
A visual novel is an interactive novel that tells it's story mostly text with some pictures and animation. It does not have gameplay in the traditional sense. You will not be in control of a sprite or 3d model character and move them around a virtual world. It is a novel. You will be reading and clicking on choices. (Just a heads up for the uninitiated. I've seen reviews of other visual novels by people who didn't understand what a visual novel was)
This is information come from the initial release of the first part on early access.
Yakuza Kiss is an Otome(visual novel directed at a female audience generally romantic in nature) that is very unlike a lot of the other otomes I've experienced. It doesn't seem to deal with multiple romantic routes and interests like a typical otome. Instead it seems to focus on the development of the female protagoist, Jeong. It deals with themes of loss and the psychological effects of loneliness. This is not a fluffy romantic escape(not that there is anything wrong with that).
Warning: You might not want to play this game if you have lost a family member or friend to a car crash or to suicide. This game deals in dark themes and you should not go into this unprepared. Please practice self-care.
If you have ever felt lonely or secluded for any extented period of time. If you have ever found it hard to make social contact with people. If you've ever felt depression. You may relate to Jeong. If you haven't ever felt depression you may not understand her or why she may feel or do certain things.
Remember this is a work of fiction. It is to be used for entertainment purposes only.
Other than all of that. I personally enjoyed it and am very interested in seeing what happens next. It is currently unfinished and will be updated and have chapters added throughout early access.
This is still early days but I have played chapter 1 and it took about 3 hours and I really love the look and feel of the game. I am very interested in what happens next. Although I am disappointed that you can’t save manually that you have to rely on the game saving at check points besides that the game does draw you in and I don’t usually purchase or play games that aren’t completed or write reviews but I made an exception.
