This tower defense game with its stunning and pleasant graphics is an absolute delight to play. Its attention to detail, addictive gameplay, and positive atmosphere make it a standout title in the genre. Whether you're a fan of tower defense games or simply looking for an engaging and visually appealing experience, I highly recommend giving this game a try. It's an absolute gem that will keep you entertained for hours on end.

Why TailQuest Defence
I stumbled upon this game on the Linux Gaming subreddit and immediately added it to my wishlist. I make it a point to support games featured on the subreddits I follow, saving them for future play. The game struck me as similar to Dungeon Defenders, a title I sunk a lot of time into back in the early 2010s. I'm a big fan of tower defense games. My therapist advised me to inject some fun into my life, so I decided to grab this game on impulse.
Story
I won't lie, the story didn't really grab me. I get the gist of it, but I couldn't tell you the names of the characters or the creatures involved. You're some sort of creature, and your job is to fend off other creatures using color-coded plants. The "enemy creatures" are out to snatch your offspring, and you're the last line of defense. Honestly, it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.
Audio & Video
The audio and graphics of the game are unremarkable. However, they blend into the background and don't distract from the gameplay, which is a plus for elements that don't stand out. Make no mistake, however, the visuals are cute. I love the character design of all the moving parts. The graphics overall are just simply nothing to write home about.
Gameplay Mechanics
Overview
TailQuest is played from a third-person perspective and sticks to the classic tower defense formula. You set up defensive towers along a predetermined path for the enemies. Eliminating these enemies earns you gold, which you use to upgrade and plant more towers. The game features just two enemy types, each with three variations: standard, fast, and tanky. Your towers are plants, and you can only place them in designated nest spots. You can also plant extra seeds in the soil to create landmines in both color types, serving as a secondary defense that detonates upon contact. Besides towers and bombs, you have a ground pound attack that damages enemies, with more damage inflicted the higher you drop from. Each map is also dotted with secrets, often rewarding you with gold and free plants.
Controls & Camera
The controls really drag down the experience. The camera also adds to the problem, as it's linked with the control issues. Your character can't jump very high due to the ground pound feature. This often leads to getting stuck on terrain, as the jumps aren't high enough. The character movement feels slippery and floaty, which isn't ideal for this game. You need to make precise choices with towers and interactive items. But sliding past them or dealing with two close interactables can be really annoying.
Replayability & Final Thoughts
These are usually two different sections, but for this game, they can be combined into one. There's not much reason to play again after the first completion. Nothing new unlocks after beating the game. You can aim for three stars on each map, but that's likely achievable on your first playthrough. Overall, I'd recommend skipping this game. If you've played tower defence games before, this won't offer any new challenges. But for young gamers or genre newcomers, it might be worth a try.
Should you complete TailQuest Defence?
You'll get all achievements by playing it just once. They feel like they were added simply because games usually have them. As a completionist, I wouldn't seek out this game specifically. However, if you already own it, it's an easy way to boost your 100% game completion stats.
Very beautiful little game for everyone. The game is both a challange to experienced and inexperienced players.
To reach maximum score it is necessary to explore the levels like in a plattformer, observe the environment and to place your towers.
The first three levels are not overly challenging but it the difficulty level adapts and the later levels are very rewarding.
The soundtrack fits very magically into the environment.
The game runs very stable and the only problems encountered had been imprecise controls on rare occasions.
With this game, you'll find a perfect blend of cuteness and thrill! In terms of graphics and music, the game is like candy wrapped in sugar, and the characters (even the evil ones) are adorable, but if you are concerned about our small friends being abducted, the 'defense' part will get your blood pumping! As much as I enjoy the world and its tranquility between enemies' waves, I also enjoy the challenges that come with them. We have the story, we have the logic, we have the action, exploration, and tower defense all rolled into one, and at such a reasonable price for such a quality product.
Eh... It's a good looking game and it does what its supposed to, but... the camera is annoying in co-op and its just not that fun.
I had a blast playing this game. While being a classic tower defense, it has a nice twist in that there are some pretty serious platforming and exploration elements. And don't let the charming visuals fool you – It's challenging not only strategically, but also in terms of actual raw mechanics, which keeps it fresh all the way until the end. My only gripe is with the camera work - sometimes it makes the platforming tougher than it needs to be, but that aside, it's an excellent game.
This is an interesting and very well made tower defense game. I love that it's not only about building towers, but also about exploration - every level has some secrets to discover and it makes me forget about the defense aspect sometimes 😀
The impressively colorful art style is refreshing in the sea of video-gamey grime.
Really like the graphics and music, it's just a nice world to spend your time in.
The gameplay is enjoyable and/but requires a bit of thinking.
There are some bugs on Linux I couldn't start the game the first time on Fedora Wayland, but after logging out entering X session and back in Wayland game worked fine.
Tried the game both on my desktop and Steam Deck and on Steam Deck the first time the game controls stopped working just before the first level as game thought I don't have a controller, restarted the game and it solved the issue.
If you can look past the minor issues the game should be a fun experience!
If defending a sky-floating world from robots isn't on your bucket list, it needs to be. 10/10 - would fluff again
Finally game i was waiting for! Great cozy tower defence, can't wait to play it more with my gf!
For seasoned player beginning can be bit slow, but for co-op with a kid this tempo, and non-violent chill setting its's way to go. Quite impressive game for team of two!
A cute, comfy Tower Defense game that's deceptive in its looks - much harder than it appears!
It's not too often that you need to actually move and explore in a Tower Defense game, is it? You can't just plop down / upgrade a few towers, start the wave and then wait, you need to put in some legwork yourself!
During waves you need to run around and collect the loot that drops from incoming mobs, while inbetween waves you need to farm any flowers that have fully grown... not to mention keep an eye out for secrets, explore every nook and cranny of your level, and use the environment to your advantage.
Definitely get this if you're looking for a more unique approach on Tower Defense games!
Cute, our kiddo loved it. Its good if you need a chill game
She played for half an hour, and I played a bit longer.
Wholesome game with cozzy feeling. I really have fun playing with it!
I like a good tutorial. Good job on the split screen mode!
Great, cute tower defense with a sprinkle of exploration and searching for secrets. And a cherry on top ? Co-op mode with a kid :)
Long awaited game for me.
Really cute tower defence.
Stages are full of secrets, and either I have overestimated my skills, or the game is hard.
A wonderful and very cute game. I am happy to see it done and having fun playing it.
A very lovely and charming mix of tower defense and light platforming/exploration, sorta like Captain Toad meets Tower Defense. You not only just set the towers and watch them blast enemies to smithereens, but you also get to control the hero and traverse the levels in search of additional items, secters, or to just melee-stomp enemies to death.
Best of all, it even supports two players local co-op mode! If you like this kind of puzzle/platforming/tower defense kind of games, and preferably have a friend to play with, I'd say definitely give this one a go!
Very polished. Perfect gift for your kid to enjoy quality gaming time. If you are a parent you can also play together. Awesome!
