Terra Feminarum is a Finnish mythology themed Japanese style manic shoot ’em up. The characters and the story are based on Finnish mythology. The gameplay and the art style are both highly inspired by Japanese danmaku shooters.
Features:
- Hand drawn HD (1080p) graphics. No wasted screen space!
- 7 Character driven story chapters that leads the player trough the forests and lakes into the mystical land of Pohjola.
- Story Mode where player can experience the story chapters individually. The character progress will be saved. This mode has also special challenges!
- Arcade Mode with traditional arcade like experience for 1cc and score runs. No continues. A true challenge for the most skilled players.
- 4 difficulties: Novice, Normal, Hard and Brutal. While the Brutal difficulty will separate the flesh from the bones, the Novice difficulty will give you mercy.
- Special Weapon System lets the player pick up mana from fallen enemies to power their shaman’s most powerful attacks.
- Enhancement system lets the player enhance the playable characters by beating bosses and challenges.
- The games magical soundtrack enchants you with varied folk themed songs running from waltz to black metal.

Good manic shooting game. Didn't realize the price had dropped to this low so now it is an even better value if you are the least bit interested. Apparently the Devs plane to make it free eventually? Either way I say pick it up at this extremely low price point and give them a little bonus support for their future project.
A great bullet hell game with Finnish mythology.
The visuals are great, sprites look great, the patterns are "easy" to read and look beautiful.
The soundtrack is what you would expect from a Finnish mythology inspired game, nice tracks with black metal tone to them.
The controls are on spot and never fail.
The only downside I can think of is how some of the missions feel tedious, but that's just a minor inconvenience.
I purchased the game for its Kalevala setting, and it turns out quite - not bad.
Personally I would say this game is influenced by the Touhou series to a certain extent, I mean the part where boss have separate 'spells' each with a name and such. I also acknowledge that Cave's shmups are popular in Finland for whatever reason, so they might be one of the inspirations as well.
The bullet patterns are fine, no serious problems, no outrageous innovations. Graphics give a very indie feeling, which is not really a bad thing. For me, the two forementioned aspects are of average / mediocre quality. Seen better, seen worse, that's it.
What makes me think the game really worth more than the 100 yen labelled price should be the music. Accordions and synth-rock give a very, very, almost stereotypical 'Finnish' feeling. Not to mention some of the traditional tune remixes.
I don't really enjoy widescreen vertical shooter, and this one, unfortunately, as well. It's just a problem of habits and familiarity though.
Also, speaking of problems, I experienced some weird lags in input as well as in display. I would suggest that these were caused by some engine / danmaku logic flaws. Fixes will be appreciated if possible.
Overall 7.5/10, considering the very low price.
Touhou game set in the nordic setting!
10/10. Bullet hell, waifus, music: everything is there. It even has actual key config (suck it ZUN).
Game has upgrade system that allows hardcore people finish it "as is" AND more casual auditory to grind abit for easier experience (you get bonuses after finishing levels and then some if you do achievements that make your character stronger).
Game needs some minor polish but it 100% WORTH BUYING.
I bought a bunch of bullet hell/shmup games during steam winter sale and this one was my favorite, for the following reasons:
1. It is drop dead cheap.
2. Utilizes the full screen rather than putting black bars on the side, and using only the center portion for play which most other games of this genre do. It drives me mad. What's the point of wasting 50% of the screen, really annoying!
3. The soundtrack is great.
4. The graphics are very good, they are not some low res stuff that is scaled up. This is a modern product with 1080p graphics, which is what sets it apart from most of the other bullet hell games which seem to low res graphics and seem very outdated.
5. Controller support which surpisingly some of the bullet hells don't have (looks at eXceed with disappointment).
Wish more shmups/bullet hells utilized full screen and had modern graphics. Is that really so much to ask for?
Solid SHMUP with a nice soundtrack and a nice art style. Play as a smug DFC loli, Xena the Warrior Titcow, or not!Holo and go beat up other scantily-clad women in your investigation of the Northern Lights fading.
A stunningly beautiful bullet hell game with some of the most graphically amazing bullet patterns ever to grace a monitor.
The game comes with 7 stages and 4 difficulty levels. Even at the lowest setting, though, the game is hard. If I had to find a negative point, it's the fact that to unlock the last stage you must complete all the challenges in the first 6 ones, and those challenges invariably include completing the stage without ever getting hit. This is going to cause some frustration.
Still, this is just a minor nitpick. If you like bullet hell games, this will certainly be a satisfying purchase. I'd, however, wait for a sale to buy it.
i love it. More Stages please
Finnish mythology is driving the story in this bullet hell SHMUP. The soundtrack sports black metal, polka and folk music. Japanese bullet hell tropes fill in the gaps. The characters are as doujin as it gets. The gameplay is well tuned, refined and pretty much with no skill ceiling. Terra Feminarum isn't easy, even for its genre's standards. There's no Novice option and even Normal is manic right off the bet. The story mode sort of doubles as training wheels. You tackle one chapter at the time and will receive persistent perks for doing so. This allows the player to build up his/her favorite character, everything becomes a bit more manageable and stays fun. Gained skills can be applied in arcade mode and are dearly needed: no continues, perks need to be re-earned with each run, 1CC or bust.
Most bullet hell shoot em ups on steam are plagued by either technical issues (such as very limited resolution options) or overly nostalgic design decisions (like having arcade as the only playable mode).
This game suffers from neither of those problems while also having the most appealing visual style I have seen in a shoot em up and keeping the core gameplay elements of a classic bullet hell shooter intact.
The only thing I severely dislike about the game so far is, that in story mode the final stage can only be accessed by completing all challenges in all previous stages. If you want to move up a difficulty, you would also have to repeat the whole process. I'm not a fan of gating endgame content in general, especially if it feels this artificial and forced. If someone has played up to the end of the game, why would you deny him or her the final chapter? Every other chapter is unlocked by beating the previous chapter, why not the final one too? If you really do want to gate it, at least make it interesting! This almost made me not write a review or even write a negative one, because I think that is a ridiculously bad idea that really rubbed me the wrong way, but at the end of the day, the rest of the game is very good so I still think you should give it a try.
Terra Feminarum is hands down the most beautiful Shmup I have ever experienced; the colors, background drowing and the music are amazing.
I really like the story mode that allows you to :
- Start to play on the level following the last one you cleared,
- Getting back to the level you cleared to get achievements in order to get much needed improvements to your character (extra life, extra power)
This is really cool to do the level you just cleared and getting those achievements, it makes you feel that you really improved at the game.
Ok I said the improvements are much needed cause, and that will be my only slightly cons with the game, is that even on the lowest difficulty it's pretty damn hard :P At least it makes me keep playing it over and over coz I really want to see what cool arts await me on the next level.
I wholeheartedly recommend this game and also getting the OST.
A well-made game with good attention to details. I wish it got more coverage and reviews as I think those would be mostly positive and the devs would deserve for the game to be noticed at least in the community of bullethell enthusiasts. The folklore atmosphere is good and spans consistently over the story, characters and soundtrack. The mix of Finnish and Japanese elements is interesting and fresh. The difficulty is high, as it should be and the core gameplay well implemented. If you like a challenge, smooth bullethell shoot'em up gameplay and welcome the idea of atmostpheric story elements in a fresh and unique take, then get this one.
