Update Notes

Now with Valve Index Controller support - Finger tracking, grabbing and throwing :D

About the Game

ATTENTION: THIS GAME REQUIRES HIGH-SPEED CONTROLLER TRACKING

Unfortunately, Steam removed some VR compatibility indicators, so we have to put it plainly here: Rainbow Reactor uses extremely accurate physics that only work with high-speed controller tracking. This means that throwing accuracy can suffer greatly from using wireless solutions like Air Play, Virtual Desktop etc - depending on your setup. Also, the game does not support lower frequency positional tracking like what is used in WMR for example. In short, it is advised to play this game using external tracking like lighthouses. On a side note, this makes this game an ideal tool to find out how good the inside-out tracking of HMDs and also the speed and reliablity of your wireless transmission is.

A very simple game.

Beautiful graphics and sound. The environment and aesthetics are really cool.

It is definitely fun and relaxing to play. Don't let the very first mission fool you, it definitely has at least a bit more depth than just beer pong with colored orbs.

Worth picking up, especially on sale.

Rainbow Reactor has an interesting approach to bring Match-3 into VR: you grab colorful spheres with your hand and throw them into a hex-shaped grid. If three or more of the same color are next to each other, they disappear and you score some points. Through the natural feeling of throwing, it all feels very physical. The nice 80s music, which is in sync with the spheres rolling to you from the left and right, almost makes it feel like a rhythm game. Definitely an interesting mix with addictive high score hunting!

So I fail if I throw a ball at the annoying robot? So much for fun.

Dev edit: I just want to nail that robro with some paint balls my dude. Maybe add a gamemode next time where I can teach that smug bucket some manners.

I like this colorful game. I think it's great for parties with kids on rainy days, if one player plays and the crowd is watching whats going on.

I like this game. It's a little more hectic than I expected but it's unlikely to make you sweat. I particularly like that I got it at 67% off, it's definitely a bargain at that price!

I completed the 8 levels of the main game in about 2hrs but haven't managed to clear the bonus time stage. I also had a little teleport around. I haven't tried SINGLE SHIFT yet.

The world you are in is well made and gives some grandeur to what is otherwise a quite simplistic game i.e. throw coloured ball in hole. However it does that very well. The colour blending (light not paint) works nicely, but they have clearly spent quite some time getting the throw of the ball just right.

I think they could have padded the game out a bit more. The level progression is all at once. The balls come faster to you, the extra balls come faster from the reactor and more and more floor sections are removed. They could easily do baby reactor i.e. higher walls, full floor & slow balls. Normal reactor i.e. what you have now from level 3+. Super reactor i.e. weird chunks of floor missing, higher ball rate with irregular ball releases, reactor balls coming from all angles. And have 8 levels in each. Or go the whole hog and have a full set of rainbow coloured reactors from red though to magenta. I'm not expecting much different, maybe just change colour of the lights. At least then grandma could play the first reactor, rather than just the first level. Perhaps the single shift will answer some of that.

The only thing I found a little annoying was the lack of feedback for why you just got another strike. I think when you fail to catch a ball it should explode and spray that side of your vision in paint (a bit like blood splatter in FPS games) and when they fall off the reactor should explode in a column of light. Also the robot should prioritise strikes rather than cutting off and saying the last thing that happened.

Overall though I really like this game and will be playing it again. It is also on the list of games I will bring out to show VR virgins, it's at least as good as the games in The Lab.

A fun, addictive game. I was surprised by the level of polish of this game, considering that its coming from an indie studio. The throwing mechanic is very well implemented and consistent, making it a very satisfactory experience

Actually I never liked match-3 games. But I also didn't like rhythm games before Beat Saber. In combination with the throwing mechanics, which work great on my OG Vive, Rainbow Reactor is a brilliant new game idea - challenging, action-packed and only possible in VR. Give it a try!

That's so much fun. I just bought this game and have to dive right back in for a few more rounds but wanted to give my feedback first. And with the sale that's a true bargain.

Great game! This ‘match three’ type game deserves to be played by more people. I loved playing a similar game, Puzzle Bobble, back in the day and enjoy this game just as much.

There are nine levels of increasing difficulty with level 9 offering a great challenge as you have to try and make 99 matches. The ability to mix colours to form other colours is a great addition to the game play and is well executed. I found the friendly robot, Dottie, to be adorable and, unlike some, won’t be turning her voice off! Also, in between games you can take a breather and do a tour of the factory which is a nice touch.

This game was made by a very small dev team but you would never know this as the level of polish to the game is top notch and the background environment of the factory and the cityscape is stunning. It’s a great game to demo to VRgins as there’s no motion sickness and the gameplay is intuitive.

This game should belong in everyone’s VR library!

Its a match 3 game that relies on your aiming being off to create tension...

The graphics are colorful, the game easy to understand and pretty entertaining to play.

Id love for a way (pistol shoot with a guide of where it will fall?) would be great. because my biggest frustration was that i didnt hit my intended target, and levels are challenging so having bad aim is a game killer.

That being said, the throw mechanics are very well done, its quite probable my misses where my fault rather than the games fault... still, its easier to blame the game because i knew where i wanted to throw the ball.

Enjoyable, kid friendly, relaxing.

Fun match-3 with a VR twist: you have balls to throw and colours to mix. (Just don't throw the controllers by mistake!)

It's playable while seated, and you only need locomotion if looking around; you don't need it while actually playing. And even when you do use it, it's using the teleport method, so no problems for anybody who suffers from the VR equivalent of motion sickness.

While I'd prefer a native version, it works fine via Proton.

Thanks for a great game.
I just wanted to drop in and say what a great game this has been .. :)

I'm glad that you guys are still adding stuff. :) I read the recent news and just know there are people out there that greatly enjoy what you have created. I thank you for taking the time and talent to do so.

I had to not play it for a month and a half due to an oculus S bug that did not allow me to throw properly in ANY game at all.

They seem to have fixed that.. off to playing this game again.

I'm sure when my daughter sees that it can be played again she'll be at it again too.

Again .. Thanks :)

You have the index controllers implemented wrong. We do not want to grab the balls with the trigger, when actually grabbing them is way more immersive.

[edit] Replying to the dev: What is this Steam VR window you are referring to? The tiny one I have does not show anything controller related when right clicked.

If you like to stand at the exact same spot inside an interesting looking complex industrial building and are the "match 3" loving type of gamer go ahead.

I have to admit that I am not a fan of "Match 3" so I tried to have a look around. The only spot reachable by teleport seems to be in front of the exit button. This is too bad since the building looks stunning and I would love to explore...

The throwing part actually was surprisingly accurate, can't confirm the problems some other reviewers were experiencing. From a technical point of view this is done very well.

I did not find enough content for the amount they are currently asking. This might be different for fans of "match 3" games.

They also could add different locations or the possibility to walk around and explore...

Cool concept, but the gaming mechanics just don't work. Throwing doesn't work right (I'm on an Oculus Rift) - throw it as hard as possible and it barely clears the beginning of the playspace.. Also, the left and right hands are reversed - something is wrong there:(

It's cheap enough that I'm keeping it, but I hope it gets fixed.

This is Puzzle Bobble/Bust A Move in VR where you can throw the balls with either hand and mix balls to make different colors. It's fun, looks great, has good music, and has global leaderboards.

I'm having a lot of fun playing this - it ticks a lot of boxes for me.
I love throwing stuff in VR.
The music is sick.
The factory environment looks really good.
The game has a sense of humour.
The core game play requires good strategy.
Works great on the Pimax!

Fully functional, it does what it says on the tin. A serviceable match 3 in a genre that strangely see's little movement in VR.

The positives:

Seated or standing, it plays the same. Graphics are nice and tidy, and looks the part when you increase the in game rendering scale. The throwing mechanic works, the game is can be played at differing paces that will alter percentages of scoring, that is backed up by a global leaderboard. The Rhythmic update is a great addition, very like 'To The Tops' cool vibes if you enjoyed that.

One or two nit picks:

Struggled with lack of instruction, there appears to be no visual text explaining things. There's vocal instruction, but it seemingly flew over my head as it happens while your in a game and easily missed if you don't happen to start the level where things are explained to you.

Performance could be sketchy, at 1.0 on the render it looks very average, something you'll want to change. I have a powerful computer and upped to 1.8, the motion of the balls coming towards were very slightly flickering.

There's a lack of visual or vocal 'pow' when you clear lines. One of the most appealing things about match 3 is that gratification that's normally conveyed to you visually or vocally when you succeed with things.

I do recommend this though, it is fun to play and has that frustrating one more go thing about it.

Fun game for everyone!
We installed this game at our company to try our freshly installed HTC Vive with some non-violent, inoffensive content. Now the problem is, I can't stop my colleagues from playing! Young, old, male or female, everyone loves throwing and especially mixing these paint balls! Really a fantastic showcase that pretty much works for everyone and has you play more, the depth of the gameplay starts to reveal itself. Will be interesting to see how this game develops, so far it's got great visuals and perfect playability. The audio side, especially music, could have more punch and variety but this really doesn't make too much difference for the game. Still I guess we'll have to restrict the use of this game to outside of work hours. OR, we let the boss try it as well...

EDIT: 1/21/19 - I originally expressed hesitation toward paying full game price, but that was before I realized the FULL ACCESS version would be much larger, and almost certainly a better cost / content ratio. Yes, I think a bigger and better game will be more worthwhile and more fun game.
-----------------------------------------------------------

I paid full (sale) price (and I’m glad I did!)

This reviewer just spent 30 minutes playing Rainbow Reactor, and I had such a great time I (literally) had to force myself to stop! While perhaps not the world’s biggest fan of color matching games, I’m far from a stranger to the genre, and I have enjoyed it often while on Steam. Yet even in that context I don’t hesitate to take this opportunity to say that color matching through a combination of dexterity and strategy (mostly strategy, I’m inclined to think at this point) is just remarkably fun, and I sincerely thank the friend who told me about Rainbow Reactor.

First, the reason I had to force myself to stop is the same reason I had some hesitation about acquiring Rainbow Reactor (RR). I’m 100% permanently disabled and have been almost entirely sedentary for over a decade. Movement is pain, especially where the back, neck and shoulders are concerned. (Yeah, now you get it, right?) But as far as game reviewing, that might make me perfect. After all, this game relies 50% on that thing I have zero ability in; throwing. (But the other 50% is that thing I have NOT neglected; strategy!)
Actually, throwing in RR is designed to be something pretty much anyone can do. (Later, as I expect speed increases will require the use of both hands, I may tell a story of less success but I suspect no less fun.) The tricky part isn’t so much hitting a target as it is throwing with not quite anatomically correct VR hands! Actually, it adds to the whole cartoony story atmosphere, and I hope that never changes. And even with no throwing skill to rely on, I can come reasonably close to most targets I aim for.

The concept of the game, and the means leveling is accomplished are both intelligent and intriguing. The learning curve (which is more a skill curve) feels ideal to this player and seems to offer very reasonable and realistic challenges. In just half an hour I managed to reach Level 5 and Leaderboard position 21 (out of how many I suspect I’d prefer not to know, thankyouverymuch!)

Rainbow reactor is at first look, both a fun game and a great VR game. I experienced zero headaches or nausea, played while sitting on my couch, and the VR graphic and physics (throwing) aspect seems just about perfect. This is a game for anyone (thus the reason I explain my "issues"), any age, and while I doubt I’d have paid full price, I’m VERY happy to have this game for the price I paid.

Thank you, both readers and developers.
