cool game, interesting story just a bit short, worked it out in 30 min and finished in 45, happy to wait for the sequel tho
A Salem Witch Trial is a somewhat good visual novel, but it is not awesome in the slightest. Firstly, to clarify, this game has nothing to do with the Salem witch trials of 1692. It does involve a double homicide taking place in Salem in 1692 where the culprit is thought to be a witch. Although the game's store page states that the player has to go through the evidence to find the murderer, there is little to no evidence directly linking anyone to the murder. Everything is taken from eyewitness accounts. From hearing their testimonies, any number of the story's suspicious characters could've been responsible.
One downside is not being able to suspect of several people at the same time. I definitely suspected multiple people. Nothing is as simple as what was portrayed here. The true ending, while interesting, seemed way too far-fetched to me, especially for that time (1692 - over 300 years ago), but it was an engrossing ending.
I was hoping for the story to be more engaging, but it seemed too linear and full of holes. The game was at times unresponsive and has numerous spelling/grammar errors, as well as often incorrectly labeling speech from one character as belonging to a different character. There are at most four dialogue choices for each character you interview, except when speaking to the suspected culprit. The dialogue itself is extremely basic, and the type of English that would have been spoken at the time of this story's period setting isn't used at all.
Furthermore, from one of the images on this page, you can assume that someone's missing an eye, right? Well, there's more than one person missing an eye and/or talking about it, but the surrounding circumstances are left inconclusive.
The game does feature fairly good hand-drawn animation, but it could still be better. The music sets the mood very well, but there isn't enough variation in it to really make the game shine. The same track plays over and over, which can be somewhat annoying, eventually sounding almost like that featured in alien documentaries. The story is interesting, but easily forgettable, and you end up feeling as if the experience was uneventful. I must give it a thumbs down despite the effort put into it. If you like VN's, wait until it's on sale. Both the story and game mechanics have to work in unison to provide a worthy experience. Otherwise, it crumbles fast.
This game is a short visual novel style "game" where one is tasked with finding a witch that is causing problems for the town of Salem. You do this by questioning the townsfolk to find out more about the events plaguing the town while searching for the suspected witch(this involves going back to some people/places a few times).
Once the witch is found, you then go to the town square and pick her fate(via a set of options and then a map for some of those options) in a set of 6 endings(many of them similar in text and what happens).
Pros: A semi-decent visual novel with somewhat nice looking backgrounds/graphics.
Cons: Very short(even with getting all endings), some grammar/spelling mistakes, somewhat lackluster endings, somewhat repetitive music, and one cannot load a save during the credits.....meaning one has to quit the game and restart it to load and try another ending.
Conclusion: Worth it to fans of the genre for maybe 1-2 dollars(give or take) and if one has an hour to kill.....not worth it much beyond that.
The art is beautiful; the rest can be summed up as: zzzzzzz
Also, the artwork is period appropriate and, again, it is beautifully rendered yet the dialect/speech is not.
Ugh. That's all I have to say. I went into this hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Not the case. I would refund this if I could.
My advice to the developers: lower the price to 99 cents and then use your money to hire a proofreader for your next game.
Pros:
-nice art
Cons:
-poorly edited text plentiful with errors
-not enough content to justify the price--even after it was lowered
-easy to solve mystery that makes you wish you could just skip to the end
-for something claiming to be a murder mystery, this was just way too linear. you might as well just call this a visual novel. not that there's enough content here to qualify for that either.
Don't waste your money here.
This is not a typical visual novel. At least, not as I have seen. Most involve romance in one shape or form. This does not. It is however a really good story. A mystery with supernatural elements taking place in Salem. There is only one true end, and you have to keep your wits sharp to notice all the clues...
Very decent for the price. Would recommend.
A Slim Witch Trial
Bit of a mixed bag. The character art, soundtrack and story are designed with a lot of care. The game is way too short, even by 2 dollar standards, count 30 minutes to complete. Doesn't really require any detective work. There are multiple endings but they're not hard to get. The story doesn't really branch out.
There are occasional bugs with wrong character names, which for a visual novel is a bit careless, especially if it's this short.
I'm going to give it a + nevertheless because after all it's very cheap, I did enjoy my very short time with it, and wished there would have been a bit more to it.
Well...
I had hoped for more, something more intricate, with testimony.
I was disappointed when I first launched the game, and even more so when I finished it less than half a hour later.
It is just a click and read the dialogue. Any kind of reflexion is just you connecting the dots and pointing at one of the suspects. And, when I say suspect, I mean that everything is just pretty obvious from the start.
If I were you, I would just keep my money and find another game.
I purchased this game after reading some good reviews and seeing the "Mostly Positive" at the top. I should have taken a look at the negative reviews, because they all point out what I hated about this game.
It's very short, and I mean VERY short. You run around town asking people the same questions over and over, and even when you learn something new none of the dialogue changes. There are no choices that effect the game, except for at the end and still that doesn't make the game worth replaying.
Visually speaking it is very nice, but still there isn't much to see. You visit 9 places in total which all have a different character to speak with and a different back drop but they just stand there a maybe blink once and a while.
I should have looked into this game more, I expected something completely from what I got.
I do not recommend this game even on sale. (I purchased it on sale)
a salem witch trial was a really nice experience. it's short, but really nice. it has nice designs and nice soundtrack with an interesting story, like a book i read long time ago. the fact that there are different choices you can take make this short game more enjoyable
I'm an avid consumer of story games. This one intrigued me, but alas fell entirely too short. I finished everything - including every achievement - in 47 minutes.
There are no real choices. You run around town asking people the same questions. The 'mystery' is obvious - as in what endings are what/who you can blame.
There are two points you can save at to make sure you don't have to dredge through the entire game again just to get the alternate endings (just picking ONE different choice), which makes replayability obselete.
The writing is not bad at all. Visuals are good. But the story is bland, a lot of text is repeated, and the game is absurdly short. Not worth the price. I've seen better visual novels for free.
Get it on sale, or just skip it. You're not missing anything.
As far as visual novels go, this one comes loaded with an atmosphere that can properly be described as bleak, which is perfectly complementary to the narrative it seeks to weave.
The experience is a brief one, clocking in at roughly two hours (and that's with getting all the achievements and endings, of which there are six), but what it lacks in length it more than adequately makes up for with its gorgeous artwork and quaint aesthetic.
Regarding areas of concern, the only criticism I have is the spotty localization, which is rife with grammatical errors and misspellings; it's still easily intelligible, but it could benefit from a bit of revision for the purposes of clarity and presentation.
All things considered, it's worth your time and investment, especially if you're into stories that take a more macabre, solemn approach.
A short but enjoyable visual novel with great artwork and an immersive atmosphere built through the story
As someone who loves mystery, it was fun to walk through the game and meet the various characters, all the time trying to pick apart their tales and discover the culprit, though I would make a lousy detective, as it took me several goes to figure out the truth.
Areas that could be improved are some polish with regards to spelling and grammar, and that the game left me wanting more, though I also view this as a positive since it meant I was engaged with the story.
Recommended if you like a dark slice of mystery that doesn't demand too much of your time
I'm not sure how to feel about this one... 5/10 maybe. The art is pretty unique and good, and there's one or two decent music tracks. The story is a little bit too short for the price, and is also kind of weird. It is pretty insensitive given what in the real world happened in Salem.
The biggest problem may lie in the program itself: It doesn't feel responsive, the skip functionality is hard to use (and seems glitchy), and the scene transition and ending are kind of dragging. Also, somehow the steam overlay does not work for me no matter what nw.js parameters I add to it...
I don't actually like the ending, but that's not really a negative point I think.
Very short. Finished all endings. I was really hoping for more. Not really worth the money (even on sale) but enjoyable enough. Great premise, cool stories. Just not enough
Nice Game, fun little murder mystery with great atmosphere.
Its fairly short game, but I dont mind that, think its a positive thing as you dont want every game to take every hour of your life away, you can get in to this enjoy the story and the mystery and move on with your life.
If you like detective style games and WITCHES!! then this is for you.
Overall 7.8 out of 10.
I really got into VNs after experiencing Cupid A Visual Novel. I also recently bought Visual Novel Maker as I love to write. I purchased this title at full price not knowing what to expect, but seeing the positive reviews. However, I cannot in good conscience rate this positively at the current asking price. There's just not enough content to justify the price in either the amount or the quality. The whole experience from beginning to end took me 37 minutes. Although, you could replay the game to get to the different endings ... alas, I felt no desire to do that.
It's a story we've all heard before, the Salem Witch Trials. Town has a run of bad luck, then young girls are accused of witchcraft and then they start naming names of fellow witches and the whole town soon erupts in chaos. Probably best written by Arthur Miller in the Crucible. So there's good material to work with and I was not expecting an original idea.
This VN takes from that story and makes it a murder mystery. A young girl's parents are murdered. She's missing. The Town has a plague killing several towns folk. People have started rumors of the family murdered being involved in witchcraft. You are tasked with finding this young girl who has already been found guilty by the towns folk. You are not so sure.
However, we don't really get to know any of the characters. You are the protagonist. But who are you? Why do you care so much about finding out the truth? Why are you searching for answers alone all over town and around when all the other townspeople are out and about with pitchforks, ready to start a lynch mob?
To progress the story forward, you really do just have to make sure you click on all the questions and then read the answers. You go to another area and rinse and repeat. This may be a great "game" device in a choose your own adventure type story, but this VN is really not that. It's really a guided novel that's mish-mashed the pages of the story by choosing this narrative form. There is no puzzle to solve. No missing clue to find. It's just make sure you've read all the dialogue choices in all the areas, then choose what to do at the end.
Sometimes it's great to feel like a detective, when it's done right. It wasn't done right in this instance. Luckily, the story is very short and so it never feels like a chore.
I liked the art. It was done very well. Original assets. The music was okay. I'm not sure what game engine was used, but I think it was TyranoBuilder as I think I saw a quick prompt during the start of the game. Digital Bento, Mr. Ho, is a very talented person no doubt. And I hate to give a negative review on his work as it's better than anything I could make as a total noob to making a game. Just the writing and direction for this experience were not there for me. There's a good game here worthy of $3.99, just not in its current form.
Rate 4/10. Needs to be priced at .99 cents in its current form for me to recommend. Sorry. I know the dev worked hard on this game, but it's just not enough quality or quantity content. I don't expect Cupid VN good, but does need more to justify its current price.
Beautiful, well-written and amazing great mystery game - kind of pricey for the length but the quality is superb.
I personally really enjoyed this visual novel, and the only thing on my mind is that I wish it was a little longer.
Pros:
- Great story
- Interesting plot
- Decent music
- Unique characters
- Beautiful art
- Cheap
Cons:
- Obvious suspect (for me, at least)
- Slow image load
- Very short story
- Frequent spelling errors and slight mistakes in general
Overall, I give the game a thumbs-up, because I really enjoy stories like this, and I thought this was pretty good! I hope to see more games like this in the future, I'd definitely buy them.
Loved the atmosphere in this game and the artwork is excellent. Gave me a nostalgic feeling of some older games, but with an updated painted approach.
I havn't previously played many visual novels , but the style and theme of this one appealed to me as being different from a lot of what is out there. It feels like an interactive graphic novel.
Its short and sweet, but I actually quite enjoy it being a manageable size as i rarely get the chance to finish games these days.
But the mystery itself is quite tricky but I figured it out eventually with a bit of replaying through.
The soundtrack is great as well and helps even more with the atmosphere
Recommended!
