Close the game 7. Enable internet connection and switch steam to online mode 8. Start the game again
About the Game
The official adaptation of Potion Explosion, the award-winning puzzle board game. Play this game solo or against players from all over the world with Solo, Online and Local Pass & Play modes! In Potion Explosion, you will explode ingredients, trigger chain reactions and gather it all in your caldron. You will then use your hard-earned unicorn tears, fairy dandruff and whatnot to craft powerful mixtures with wacky effects! May the best wizard win! HOW TO PLAY At the beginning of the game, each player is given potions to complete with specific effects and ingredients. You will have to select ingredients in the dispenser; once your selected ingredient is removed, the ingredients above will slide down. If two ingredients of the same nature collide, they explode and you get them too! You can then use your ingredients to cook up your potions. You only have a limited tank space to store remaining ingredients from one turn to another, so choose carefully! Once a potion is completed, you score points, get to use its powerful effect and pick another potion to craft. The wizard with the most points wins! Needs an undo last move option. I do have to wonder if in the base game you are a) required to preserve any unused ingredients in your stash (or if you can play defensibly and opt not to so your opponent can't steal) and b) if you can opt to stash an ingredient (I.e. for use with a wild-card potion) instead of (what the game does) force you to fill in any matching slot in one of your active potions you're completing. For the latter, you can run into situations where you could have completed both potions, while the game forces you to play in a way where you can only complete one.
Good creative game. Very easy, but also strategic. Everything I like in a game.
solo play 2h is enough
October 2023. This game is back online but more unstable than ever. Half of my games with other people turn into a game that's me vs me. What's going on?
FIX THE DAMNED GAME!
It is a fun game, but the latest "fix" broke it. You can't play offline because even though you can add an opponent (sort of) it doesn't recognize it and allow you to play.
Great fun! Casual game play, but can get deep with the different adjustments.
Bought this game and a week later it stopped loading. Tried everything including contacting the vendor with no resolution.
Checking the forums about it, numerous people are having this same problem across platforms.
I like the game and I'm hoping they resolve this soon, but anyone checking the reviews needs to know about this before making the purchase.
Decent game, doesn't take too long to learn the basics, there's a tutorial and help file.
The DLC adds interesting twists to the way the game's played.
The main issue is finding multiplayer games, there's a lack of players.
There are players if you prepared to wait though and I like it that you can set the game length finish time.
Most players tend to set it 7 days, that's fine, it gives you a bunch of moves to play if you got a few other games on the go at the same time. Games are done before that 7 day time though. Also has a friends list so you can invite to a game.
The Ai on hard isn't too bad, but like most Ai, once you know what you're doing you'll beat it more often than not.
Bought this on Android too, that's how much like it although I'm not great at it atm!
I've played a lot this game. I don't ever played the physical version but playing this online is a great addition
This is a great game for solo play to your favorite show or a group play over mics. I like it better on Steam than table top as the marbles have a tendency to roll off everywhere and the dispenser gets flimsy over time.
It's a fun little quick game to play wit others or just by yourself! The rules are pretty easy to grasp, and with the expansion you will have enough different elements to combine in order to create different challenging sets.
Love the game - and the expansion - but it's tough to find players for online play. I have a small group of friends to play with but still sometimes like to play against random others.

Bare-bones.
Things aren't as easy to find as they could be.
Tutorial makes me feel like a demo person has just abandoned me half-way through.
No Steam achievements though the game has achievements internally.
You can't check rules mid-game.
After a learning curve, the game is fun! I would drop a star for the glitches. After playing several times, the sides the screen got cut off (like something formatted for Wide Screen on a Full Screen), so sometimes the "-2" or "fill all" button aren't visible. This is even more bothersome with the Expansion, with some of the colors on the right being completely blocked off.
I've enjoyed playing with a friend and it's an interesting board game. Also looking at the actual physical one it's represented very well, so I can tell they matched it very nicely. Mechanics make it really fun, nothing really overpowered or things that make it stale (that I've found thus far). Remote play also works very well, nothing to gain seeing your opponents screen.
Great game - very fun and the kids like to watch me play and they get interested. Then they want to give it a try - so it's a good intro to board games.
I only play games single player and I can't recommend this game for single player.
Very little incentive to keep player, few stats and no challenges let alone a campaign.
I found it very frustrating playing against the computer AI. You accumulate potions which give you special abilities, which are a key to winning the game. One potion is very annoying in single player, steal all an opponents contents in their "pool". I almost always have stuff in my pool, in fact you can't avoid it, the computer automatically adds unused ingredients or whatever they are called to your pool. The AI players almost never have anything in their pool, which makes the potion useless for a human player.
Regardless, this game is very limited for single player and I don't think I would like it much more in multi-player.
Attempted to play a local game twice. Game keeps randomly crashing, and won't save game progress so unable to continue. Will refund if keeps crashing, currently unplayable.
Potion Explosion was in my life since the day TotalBiscuit mentioned it on The Co-Optional Podcast. Of course, back then, he only talked about the board game and the mobile game.
I bought the Android version straight away and I spent countless hours of playing on both mobile and tablet. And now, the game made its sneaky way to Steam and I can't be happier, as I genuinely adore this game and everything about it.
Addictive gameplay of potion making, filled with scheming and planning, is certainly the main draw for me. But, visuals and music, as well as the dash of silliness, are the main contributors for creating a wonderfully charming ambience that keeps me hooked for hours.
I will absolutely recommend this game for anyone to try, especially, if you have people around to play with ... not to diminish the enjoyment of solo or online play as I had a great deal of fun with both.
Grade: A
The boardgame is fun to play, this is still the case with this pc-adaptation.
There are lots of problems though...
- The gameview looks like a simple drawing
- no overview of all the bottles (you have to click on an opponent to see anything)
That said, I'm still happy to be able to play the boardgame on my pc when my friends are not able to join me for the tabletopversion... However, I bought this thing on sale. If I would have to pay full price, I would have instantly refunded it because of the really ugly look (looks like a very cheap free flash game) and the lack of overview (very important in a boardgame).
Excellent digital version of the boardgame!
If you were a fan of the boardgame, which in itself felt like a classic videogame puzzler ala Tetris Attack/Yoshi's Cookie, this game is a great digital verion of it.
The tutorial is very clear and it is easy to jump in.
I haven't tried out online multiplayer yet, but so far I recommend this.
Special shoutout for releasing a Linux version too, no issues whatsoever.
