Total War: THREE KINGDOMS is the first in the multi award-winning strategy series to recreate epic conflict across ancient China. Combining a gripping turn-based campaign game of empire-building, statecraft and conquest with stunning real-time battles, Total War: THREE KINGDOMS redefines the series in an age of heroes and legends.China in 190CE
Welcome to a new era of legendary conquest.
This beautiful but fractured land calls out for a new emperor and a new way of life. Unite China under your rule, forge the next great dynasty, and build a legacy that will last through the ages.
Choose from a cast of 12 legendary Warlords and conquer the realm. Recruit heroic characters to aide your cause and dominate your enemies on military, technological, political, and economic fronts.
Will you build powerful friendships, form brotherly alliances, and earn the respect of your many foes? Or would you rather commit acts of treachery, inflict heart-wrenching betrayals, and become a master of grand political intrigue?
Your legend is yet to be written, but one thing is certain: glorious conquest awaits.
ANCIENT CHINA RECREATED
Discover Three Kingdoms China, a land of breath-taking natural beauty. Battle across lush subtropics, arid deserts and snow-capped mountains. Marvel at legendary landmarks like the Great Wall of China and the Yangtze River. Explore the length and breadth of ancient China as you restore harmony to its embattled landscape.
CHINA’S GREATEST LEGENDS
Forge a new empire as one of 12 legendary Warlords drawn from China’s celebrated historical epic, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Peerless commanders, powerful warriors and eminent statesmen, these characters each have a unique playstyle and objectives. Recruit an epic supporting cast of heroes to command your armies, govern your provinces and strengthen your growing empire. Characters are the beating heart of the game, and China’s very future will be shaped by its champions.
GUANXI SYSTEM
Modelled on Guanxi, the Chinese concept of dynamic inter-relationships, Total War: THREE KINGDOMS takes a paradigm-shifting approach to character agency, with iconic, larger-than-life heroes and their relationships defining the future of ancient China. Each of these characters is brought to life with their own unique personality, motivations, and likes/dislikes. They also form their own deep relationships with each other, both positive and negative, that shape how your story plays out.
ARTISTIC PURITY
With stunning visuals and flamboyant Wushu combat, THREE KINGDOMS is the art of war. With beautiful UI, vibrant vistas and authentic Chinese-inspired artwork, this reimagining of ancient China is a visual feast.
REAL-TIME & TURN-BASED HARMONY
The turn-based campaign and real-time battles of Total War: THREE KINGDOMS are more interconnected than ever before. Actions in battle now have much greater consequences, affecting your Heroes’ relationship towards you, as well as the friendships and rivalries they develop with other characters. In a world where powerful allies are one of the keys to success, this adds a brand-new element to how victory is achieved.

I really don't understand why this games online is dead. I've been playing Total war games since the first game that was released back in June 2000. This game is the best total war game iv played in the past 20 years or so,
Graphics - Fantastic
Sound design - Legendary
If you have played Dynasty Warriors games growing up on PS2 the generals and the story in this game will be familiar to you.
This game is a (sadly abandoned gem). While the unit roster certainly lacks the variability of f. e. Medieval 2 or Rome (and even more so, Warhammer), the playstiles, starting positions and faction mechanics are different enough to make it much more diverse as f. e. Shogun 2. The setting is new and (at least ofr me) exciting,
Sadly, the game was more or les abandoned after a year, at leact concerning new dlc, wasting a great potential.
The only real downside is the absence of naval combat - which in reality was a huge part of the wars of the Three Kingsoms (although mostly river warfare).
Got this game after I finished watching Kingdom the anime.
The game was a 10/10 until I got to the endgame. The game became a bit tedious when you reach the 3 kingdoms stage. 8/10.
Also surprisingly playable on the steamdeck.
9.5/10
One of the only total war games I enjoyed.
Fun game, good graphics and hours of entertaining content.
cannot recommend this game enough, love the designs and gameplay, this game literally made me buy both the romance of the three kingdoms and a english translation of it
the xung wu disagreement, 23 million killed. 32 planets destroyed, 36 trillion pounds of rice stolen and 16 dudes made emperor, average gameplay
Seems to crash a lot. Used to play on a lower spec laptop which ran it fine, now I'm playing on a better desktop though it seems to not want to work. Really annoying as it tends to happen a few turns in when I'm just getting used to it. Makes it unplayable so needs to be a thumbs down.
Only 6 hours in and I am hooked. As someone older and slowing down I struggle with the games that require fast reflexes. This is the perfect mix of high level strategy and battle level tactics. It is absolutely stunning.
Constantly crashing during AI turn, at random. Used to run fine on the same system and config.
Great game
Great battle mechanics, though it lacks things like apike men to deal with cavalry, which is present in anterior titles of the total war series
Perfect diplomacy
I hate eunuchs
- Watch Three Kingdoms (2010) TV series.
- Get hyped and buy the game.
- Pick Cao Cao because TV series.
- Form early coalition with Liu Bei because bros before foes.
- Deny everyone else trying to join your coalition—sorry Sun Quan, no room for you at this bromance table.
- Proceed to steamroll the entire map, side by side with Liu Bei. No Battle of Chibi to stop me this time.
- Kidnap—uh, I mean rescue—the emperor and suddenly gain cool toys like imperial edicts.
- Use that and your proxy war ability to manipulate your enemies into fighting each other, then "negotiate" a piece of their land as thanks.
10/10 would recommend
been a long tim fans of total war games but only played and finish the campaign on several of them, i know currently theres a divide in the fan base regarding the historical and fantasy camp and i can say that i'm in the middle camp. I do love historical more but having OP generl is not bad either based on my experience playing WH 2, but surprisingly in this game i prefer the record mode more than the romance. I feel the Generals are much more usefull when they have several bodyguards with them and duel mechanic while cool doesn't really effective when it can be declined.
BUT WHAT IMPORTANT IS AS DW FANS I CAN FINALLY DESTROY CAO CAO AS LIU BEI LMAO
With enough modding, I could finally realize my wet dream of restoring Han empire
Such heroic deed, such majestic work
Remember guys, get rid of Sima Yi every time
Just make sure to save the game every time you are about to enter a war against Liu Biao and you would be fine.
I have played some Total War games for around 20 years. This is the best one Ive played so far. If you are interested in buying your first TW game, I recommend you start with this one. It feels like this game is the result of years of iteration and improvement game on game. Highly recommended.
more complicated than I imagine. I haven't been able to proceed further with Cao Cao campaign than first 10 turns.
feels like less of game compared to Shogun 2. each commander only allows specific units in roster. each commander only gets max 6 units. Not as colorful or beautiful as Shogun 2. I will say i have more diplomacy options than Shogun 2. very interesting Hero implementation. And as always to many dlc's, but that's everywhere now.
Best one to try if you are three kingdoms fan except there is no character creation & customization in this.
Poorly implemented non-tactical battles where magically immortal enemy generals and their cavalry get to ignore your spearmen and roll right over everything.
I went into this sort of expecting to hate it. But in the end I really enjoyed my second campaign after giving up on my first. They really managed to hit that same sweet spot as Shogun 2. The game oozes atmosphere and has a bunch of interesting mechanics.
While I haven't been back for another playthrough I do feel it's been worth my money so far. The systems just work really well together even if the DLC is a bit of a mess.
A must-play for Three Kingdoms fans. Includes a ton of historical figures, details, events, and just has a ton going for it. Very much worth it on sale, 66% off or more, which is frequent. Massive battles, great music, and a good level of strategy for newcomers and veterans alike. Love this game.
Total War: Three Kingdoms is an exceptional strategy game that masterfully blends deep tactical combat with rich storytelling. The game immerses players in the chaos of ancient China during the Three Kingdoms period, offering a vast, detailed campaign map and highly engaging battles. The blend of diplomacy, espionage, and large-scale warfare provides endless strategic possibilities. What truly sets it apart is the dynamic characters, each with unique personalities, abilities, and story arcs that bring the historical narrative to life. With its stunning visuals, challenging gameplay, and intricate management systems, Total War: Three Kingdoms offers a truly captivating experience for both strategy enthusiasts and history lovers alike.
So this game got review bombed multiple times in the past. People were buttthurt about a bunch of things, lastly about the decision to stop running this project, as the code and basic game design could not keep up anymore with the ideas they were implementing. Watch out for part 2 though.
Aside from that it is a great game, lots and lots of factions, plenty to do on the campaign map and in the interaction between factions and leaders and with some very unique combat mechanics.
Unplayable. Stutters non stop. I have a new high end PC and cant even play this without my frames tanking.
Best Total war game ive played so far. Coming from troy and warhammer this is such a fresh experience, This game reninds of the good ol time of shogun 2 and rome with new innovative feature like advanced diplomacy. Im looking forward to complete all of the achievemt this game havve in store, cheers
Three Kingdoms feels like it's from a parallel universe where Total War games are actually good.
After taking a break from the battlefield for a couple of years, stepping back into Total War: Three Kingdoms felt like reuniting with an old friend. The game's accessibility and depth are as engaging as ever, making it a fantastic choice for both returning veterans and newcomers to the series.
The game is set during one of the most tumultuous periods in Chinese history, and it masterfully blends grand strategy with the intrigue of character-driven storytelling. The intricate web of relationships and rivalries adds a layer of strategy beyond mere conquest, making every decision feel significant.
One of the standout features of Three Kingdoms is its emphasis on heroes and their unique abilities, which can turn the tide of battle. The game's mechanics have aged well, and the strategic depth remains impressive. It's clear that the developers poured a lot of love into recreating this historical period, from the stunning visuals to the atmospheric soundtrack.
As a long-time fan of the Total War series, it's hard not to dream about a potential Lord of the Rings Total War game. Imagine commanding the armies of Rohan or orchestrating the siege of Minas Tirith! The possibilities are endless and would undoubtedly make for an epic addition to the franchise.
In summary, Total War: Three Kingdoms is a delightful return to form. Its blend of strategic gameplay and rich historical context keeps it fresh and engaging, even after several years. Here's hoping the developers heed the call for a Middle-earth adventure in the future!
Enjoy your campaigns and may your strategies be ever victorious!
One of the best Total War games and the one that best encapsulates feudal stuff in general.
Should have been the model going forward. Was screwed over by the developers.
I am a historical nerd and dislike the Warhammer titles as 'strategy games' but this? This is solid.
Mod it, though, to make sure Records gets treated properly.
Most beautiful totalwar game UI, skill tree, and other is just gorgeous
Have combination both fantasy and historical elemen
Cool diplomation system
very cool commander 1v1 duel
one of the top total war game for sure
game good but better if yes guns. Me want machine gun. Brrrratatatatatatatatatata.
It's a solid Total War game with some change up to the formula. It doesn't capture the epic scale of the battles of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms very well, but it's still fun. I waited till it was on sale and I'm not upset with the purchase. New comers will like it, fans of the older TW series might find it lacking or overly convoluted, but overall it's not bad.
Awesome game. Looks great. Runs great. The end.
Total War: Three Kingdoms is... Okayish in a lot of ways. Right now, on a 40%-off sale, the complete game, all DLC included costs 90 euros. That's a days' wages, for a 6 year old game. For that price, you had better provide more than okayish, in my opinion.
Good stuff:
- The Diplomacy system is built out and interesting. You can do a lot with it.
- The art style is unique, and quite pretty.
- It's more Total War, if you love that genre.
Bad Stuff:
- The Hero-units dominate the game to the point where strategy is hardly a factor.
It essentially plays like Total War: Warhammer, if every faction could only build Tier 2 Empire units and heroes. If you have better heroes than the army you are going up against, you will win the fight 99% of the time.
- The units and factions lack style and character. Their only identifying traits are the hero that leads each faction, and usually some kind of game-mechanic. Your soldiers are little squares of colour, bereft of all identity, and even their unit-cards are shadowy silhouettes of men.
- There's clearly an interesting story at the heart of the game - The Romance of the Three Kingdoms - but the game takes no interest in retelling the story in a way that gives you some immersion as a player. If you are from a western audience, and not familiar with the story, this game will not help you understand it, beyond "Child-emperor, crumbling dynasty, kidnapped, everyone wants him, here's the game." -- and that is a shame.
Conclusion: Buy it on a 90% sale, if you really want it.
The atmosphere is amazing.
Been starting reading the stories it's based on. It's just great!
아주 재미있는 전략 삼국지 게임, 추천!
Very fun strategy Three Kingdoms game, recommended!
Great game. Nothing to complain about. Just wished they had larger maps that included all of east asia.
Very well done, and thought out game, fun to play, exciting battles, and duels.
the best tactical strategy war game ive played in my personal opinion...this is my first total war game and i am impressed...look foward to playing Shogun and the warhammer triology
Great strategy game have wasted tens of hours on it. Will keep you engaged and up way too late. Tons of unique animals and artillery that can change the tide of a battle. ITs a really cool wartime game that captures the great war age of china.
A great way to learn about Chinese history while playing a deep strategy game that combines high level economics and politics with real-time tactical strategy.
this game is very fun to play with my friend, but it has a lot of small bugs compared to older title, like Medieval II.
Easily the best TW. More complex than any other TW by a fair margin. They could just reskin, increase character count, maybe push the stories/events a little more and I'd buy.
Heavenly Game
Total War: Three Kingdoms is a stellar entry in the Total War franchise, blending the rich historical backdrop of the Three Kingdoms period in China with the series' signature grand strategy and real-time battles. This installment offers a compelling mix of deep gameplay mechanics, a unique visual style, and an approachable yet rewarding economic system.
Unique Art Style
One of the standout features of Three Kingdoms is its distinctive art style. The game uses a vibrant, painterly aesthetic that draws inspiration from traditional Chinese ink paintings. From the intricate details on character portraits to the sweeping landscapes of ancient China, every visual element contributes to an immersive experience that feels both authentic and beautiful.
Diplomacy and Strategy
The diplomacy mechanics in Three Kingdoms are among the best in the series. The game introduces a more nuanced relationship system, where alliances, rivalries, and personal bonds between characters play a significant role. This deep diplomatic layer allows for various strategies—forming coalitions, betraying allies, or manipulating factions to weaken your enemies. It provides a refreshing alternative to the brute-force conquest typical in other strategy games.
On the battlefield, the tactical options are equally diverse. The ability to deploy ambushes, exploit terrain, and utilize specialized units makes each battle a thrilling chess match.
Economy and Building System
The economy and building systems in Three Kingdoms strike a balance between simplicity and depth. While not overly complex, the system is highly functional and rewarding. Players manage their empire’s growth by constructing and upgrading buildings that enhance income, food production, or military recruitment. The straightforward design makes it easy for newcomers to pick up, while veterans can find room for optimization and strategic planning.
A Perfect Game to Unwind
Total War: Three Kingdoms excels in offering a gameplay loop that can keep players engaged for hours. Whether you’re meticulously planning your next move on the campaign map or leading your troops to a hard-fought victory on the battlefield, the game provides a satisfying sense of progression. It’s the kind of game you can dive into after a long day, losing yourself in its world as you build your empire and shape history.
Total War: Three Kingdoms combines deep strategy, stunning visuals, and engaging mechanics to create a highly enjoyable experience. It’s a must-play for strategy enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
If you liked dynasty warriors (especially the empires versions) and total war games then you will love this game. While the empires dynasty games give you a taste of what it would be like to strategize your campaign to conquer china, Three kingdoms really immerses you in every aspect of what it would take. Building your economy to sustain your next moves, gathering the right regimens of troops, negotiating with nearby factions that may or may not decide to whoop you if you left an area underdeveloped and unguarded. Overall its just a really really good game.
Coming from Shogun 2, it takes time getting used to the mechanics. But once you do, this game becomes a total gem!
I'm a fan of the ROTK games so I figured I'd get into this but there's too much hand-holding, not much freedom, and everything is just so scripted and slow. It's my first Total War game so that's on me for not knowing how it goes but this one feels like some other game with ROTK characters slapped on top.
I love RoTK and I love TW. CA did a great job at the marriage of the 2, with this good balance of Historical and Fantasy TW. The only downside is they dropped support of this game too soon but the product we have now is still very good.
One of the best total war games series, especially the characters that are in accordance with history, character skills, character positions, diplomacy, etc. I have also played the romance of three kingdom series from koei, this is better and feels more realistic.
It's a shame this game was not developed further, if possible, there would be an expansion for the year 208 when the 3 empires faced each other.
Coming from Total War: Warhammer III this game was a little complex in comparison. Most mechanics are far deeper and well-done rather than Warhammer's alternative. The learning curve for that reason may be steeper but once it's overcome, I have a hard time going back. The AI is easily better in every way, the sieges are far more enjoyable, and the scenery/graphics are impeccable, even if it's optimization can be rough around the edges.
Love this game. I have 1829 hours currently. I use a few mods that I found on a forum that made the game even better (nothing crazy). I've played this game with multiple friends and solo for nearly three years. Absolutely insane game. Loved the Dynasty Warriors games. Gonsun Zan mains are all geniuses. Phenomenal!
