About the Game

Detective Michael Stone arrives in the small town of Pineview to assist the local police force with a seemingly simple case - A couple is found dead in their kitchen. The locals believe it to be a case of murder-suicide, their speculation fueled by rumors of the turbulent nature of the couple's relationship.

Is it just small-town gossip, or is there some truth to the rumors?

Help Detective Stone, assisted by the driven and empathetic Amy Blunt, discover the truth behind Chris and Diane's story. But be warned: the further he pursues the case, the more his own past shall come back to haunt him. And the closer his sanity will be pushed to the edge.

  • Taking inspiration from works like Twin Peaks, Deadly Premonition, and Night in the Woods, Rainswept is a character-driven drama that balances tragedy and melancholy with humor and beauty to deliver a life-affirming, cathartic experience.

    • As Detective Stone, explore the beautiful town of Pineview, talk to the many locals, interview suspects, dig through the victims' pasts and try to piece together the story behind Chris and Diane's brutal deaths.

    • Also play as Chris and experience his story with Diane - joining them in key moments of their lives together as they meet for the first time, get to know each other, and fall in love.

    Featuring:

    • An emotionally captivating story set in an immersive and atmospheric game world

    • A wide cast of characters with deep histories, meaningful motivations, and distinct personalities

    • A moving original soundtrack by Micamic (Downfall, The Cat Lady, Lorelai)

    • Pine trees, coffee, and rain. Lots of rain.

It isn't much of a detective game so much as a visual novel. There are too many cutscenes. They are tedious. Dialogue would have been better. I wanted to find clues not see the relationship of characters play out. Not sure if I want to continue.

Rainswept is a good narrative game where you play as a detective to solve a murder. The designs are great and the ambiant is cozy. I recommend it!!! 💗💗💗

I've only been playing for an hour and a half but I'm giving up. First of all, it's more of a visual novel than a proper point & click game, so there's not much game to play. Still, that's not the worst. The worst is that you spend most of your time walking from one place to the next at an extremely slow pace. There's a map but there are no shortcuts. It's really infuriating. Plus on Mac there isn't even a "run" option so it literally takes forever. The story is interesting and I'd really like to know how it ends but the gameplay is just terrible. Not recommended unless you have the patience of a saint.

If you are accepting of a story dealing with heavy topics and don't mind a video game not having lots of gameplay mechanics then get this game immediately. If not, then maybe this is not for you.
Personally, I had a great time with this game. The art at the beginning had me thinking that the game was going to be a little more playful but it turned out to have really heavy topics that were also handled well and carefully. I didn't even mind that 20 minutes in I realized I, the player, wasn't really going to be the one solving the mystery and that this was more of a visual novel and walking simulator hybrid. I just embraced it and enjoyed unfolding the story in my own pace. What I think made me really enjoy the experience was the many little subplots you can find in the town, most did not affect the story at all, but seeing how you can affect their little story and seeing how their story went throughout the days felt very cozy and felt like something that only a video game as a medium can do. I also did find some conversations and scenes to be a little on the melodramatic side, which I am personally not a fan of, but it wasn't enough to deter me from continuing. Also, the atmosphere of the art with the great music was really good, I kind of wished there was more of the music throughout the game honestly.
Overall, really fun 6-hour story for those willing to experience it and don't mind the heavy topics they discuss about.

What an absolutely lovely game. It's very easy and there aren't really puzzles in the traditional point-and-click sense, but that's fine because what the game excels at is story. Dialogue choices do somewhat shape the story, though, and can lead to different outcomes. There are also a lot of extra characters around town who you can get to know a bit or help out in different ways, which is interesting.

The character animation is a bit weird, but it has its charm, especially since the overall visual design is well done. Pineview is very atmospheric. Most importantly, the story is good and the characters are deep. You get to know the victims well. The dev really knows how to tell a story and how to use visuals to send an even more powerful message. Really a great game.

(PS: disregard my playtime. I mostly played in offline mode, so it didn't get logged. I fully played the game.)

Insanely well made game! My only gripe being that I wish there was more in depth case solving with the notebook that you fill out. Awesome art style with stunning visuals, well crafted and interesting characters, gripping story, strings you along despite the rather linear storyline, little touches here or there that make certain interactions so much more enjoyable. What's not to love?

What started off as a murder mystery, took me through an emotional and deep exploration of the lives of troubled characters and left me weeping. Experience this story for yourselves. Best 5 hours of gaming I ever invested in.

This is clearly the creative work of a single person, and I'm glad the developer has received such a positive reception here on Steam. Unfortunately, I was left rather unmoved by the story, both as a character drama and a mystery. My hope is that this brief critique can help readers grasp whether this game is likely to also leave them cold.

I'd like to open by praising the often compelling visuals. Given the minimalist art style, I was pleasantly surprised by how often I was struck by the beauty of a given scene. It makes for a delightful atmosphere, although the graphical quality drops sharply during either facial close-ups or more complex animations (e.g. climbing into a window). Still, overall something of a visual feast, which was delightfully unexpected.

Now, onto my first hang-up: the mystery. There are two key components to a detective game: first, narrative. Is the mystery a compelling one on paper? That is, would this satisfy you as a story in a book or movie form as well? Are you drawn in by the premise, given enough clues to be working through the whodunnit yourself, and yet surprised by how well the final solution bookends the little details you'd yet to fully piece together yourself? Sadly, on this level I was very disappointed by how much of this game is spent spinning its wheels. There's certainly a passion for the procedural components of policework - interviews, checking alibis, jotting down notes - but there's very few compelling clues (mainly just the gunshots question at the outset) and most twists just kind of happen incidentally to your actual investigation. Also, don't try to think too hard about the final solution - without spoiling anything, it actually makes the murder less comprehensible than it originally seemed. Food for thought: guns make loud noises,, yet no neighbours hear the initial shots; multiple entry wounds should be obvious on autopsy; no way that blood spatter makes sense.

The second key question to ask of any mystery game is do you feel like you're actually detecting? Sometimes this can mean giving you actual deductive agency (think Obra Dinn, Tangle Tower, Danganronpa...), and other times it simply means giving you enough details to collect and ways to collect them that you *feel* like a detective even if you're essentially on rails (e.g. Frogware Sherlock games, Inspector Waffles, Darkside Detective, Blacksad). A lot of games fall somewhere in the middle (e.g. A Case of Distrust, Phoenix Wright, Aviary Attorney). In this game you get neither. You exercise virtually no agency in the plot, and generally most scenes only have a handful of clickable objects to examine. A handful of times you get a minor quiz worked fairly organically into character dialogue - probably the best bit of gameplay - but getting it wrong carries no consequence. Most of the time you simply hold the stick down and click when prompted. I had high hopes when the game introduced a case book early on, but I never had any reason to refer to it.

Finally, a brief comment on the dialogue. This is admittedly highly subjective, and I'm delighted that other players found this game compelling. Personally, I found the characters to be either boring or infuriating. The protagonist and his partner are probably the most effective dynamic in the case, although they're basically two walking noir detective tropes - the grizzled veteran haunted by a dark past partnered with a younger idealist. You can probably fill in their character arcs from there.

More troubling for me was that the game repeatedly features flashbacks to the world's most bland romance. I simply felt no spark to the dialogue in the early bits, which meant that when the characters started to fight later on that was equally uncompelling. The result was that I felt more of an odd mix of boredom and disdain than actual pathos at the breakdown of their deeply unhealthy relationship. Seriously, if you're ever in a partnership where conversations of that nature are routine, read the red flags and make for the hills.

(To give a barometer for this subjective opinion, I consider the high-water mark in video game romances to be Haven, possibly followed by Sherlock-John in Sherlock: Chapter One. Those are some real yet still deeply moving partnerships where you could actually believe the characters fuck.)

Ultimately, I'm disappointed by Rainswept, but would very much encourage the creator to continue with game development. My priorities for their next project would be honing their writing chops and making a more compelling moment-to-moment gameplay loop. In particular, it would be great to look up ways to make players feel more of a sense of pseudo-agency. For the rest of you, I hope this can help you get a measure of whether this game will work for you.

I played this game years ago on Playstation, and it became my favorite game of all time. I've watched a friend play this on my PS5, bought this game several times as gifts for my friends on Steam, and now I'll play this game myself on a computer.

Rainswept is a simple visual novel with a linear story with two endings (and afaik where only one choice actually changes the ending). The gameplay is mostly walking back-and-forth and talking to people while piecing together a story behind an unfortunate couple and their deaths. The story is amazing, though, and I genuinely feel that it changed how I view the world. It's not ground-breaking, but I just really enjoy a more realistic story and I feel that this game tells one very well. It inspires a slight hope despite the tragedy by the end.

The art is great in this game despite its initial rough appearance. There are only a few times where you get a detailed look at a character's face, and it makes an impact after seeing two little black dots for so long. The landscapes and settings are beautiful and contrast the grim police investigation into the two deaths. Diving into the past of the characters and all their uncertainties and fears and hope makes their final reality so much more tragic.

I like this game a lot, and I hope it lives up to the expectation I'm setting up here (fair warning this game likes to crash a lot, 5 times per playthrough on my PS5 before saving and at random, different sections). It tells a story, and it made me feel.
