Rosetta space probe.

Realistic space program management game. Created in cooperation with ESA (European Space Agency).

  • Good tutorial and gameplay pace.

  • Provides encyclopedia about space exploration and its history.

  • Well thought out tech tree.

  • Decent graphics and realistic models.

  • You need to build your own base and design your own rockets.

  • Government, scientific and commercial missions are available.

  • Design of the projects available varies depending on the space agency selected.

  • In-game competition with other space agencies.

  • You can send man to the moon as USSR or first man on orbit as USA.

  • Original achievements.

😐
Economic aspect kept to a minimum. Game should have modding support.

❌[list]
  • Mini-game that becomes a tedious chore and doesn’t provide relatively good reward when skipped. Unfortunately they’re part of every mission.

  • Non-existent replayability, only achievement hunting.

  • Soundtrack is a torture; better mute it and play something of your choice.

  • [*] There are some, default designs that you will use most of the time. Early game does not encourage experimentation.

More on a casual side, but fun enough space race game. It is focused on basic economy and simple strategy decisions, with simple minigame thrown in. Includes great encyclopedia and photos.

Good for one go, do not expect much replayability.

I really like this game and would recommend it, you can compete with other space agency's reach mile stones and ya.. manage a space agency, as of time of review I have not reached mars yet so I might not be seeing the bigger picture, but you have a base basically where you build what you need for space.
There is a demo for the game so you could give that a shot! But just be careful, your progress does not transfer from the demo to the paid version so don't put to much work into the demo unless you are ok with starting all over lol.

It's a simple game that gets rather repetitive quickly since every mission is just a minigame of swapping resources around until they're above or within a certain threshold. Astronauts are surprisingly unimportant. In the mid-late game, all of the missions to the outer planets have large gaps between sections, so you just skip through several months at a time. The demo was a good preview of the game itself.

It was on sale for 6 USD and it kept me entertained for a good few days. I don't think it would be worth it full price. The sequel is looking interesting and will have a lot of new features, so it would make sense to skip this one if you wanted.

You can get involved in this game.

I'd change the success Process for space missions, but the basis of the game is very good.
It is not perfect and is not for the action minded player.

    7/10
-2 for the lack of random success scores early on.
-1 for the Building Bonus system

Once again, I wish there was an option between "yes" and "no", because I can't, in good conscience, call this a bad game.

It is, however, somewhat disappointing, by being less than what I expected based on the cover blurb.

What we're dealing with here is obviously something inspired by Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space, or perhaps its board game parent, Liftoff!, a simulation of a space race as a strategy game, informed by historical data and at least somewhat approximating the choices that went into the whole affair. Which is illustrated by neat-looking animations, and generally works well.

The problem is with the in-mission minigame, where you juggle resource counters through commands that transmute resources into other resources. This feels so divorced from the decisions that a space program mission control would have to make during an actual mission, that it seriously breaks immersion - particularly the way heat and radiation management works... The further you go, the sillier the options start looking compared to what the mission is supposed to be doing, and the more tedious the process gets. And then you realize that the mission has an extra phase where you have to do it all over again, and then another three times.

Theoretically you can excise this portion of the game completely, but it's on by default and you can't turn it off after you started the game, never mind that it robs you of agency.

The other, less severe problem, is that while mission choices are mostly historical, and based on real and proposed space missions, some are nonsensical. Hermes shuttle was way too small to send up an ISS module in it, at 3000kg payload capacity, yet I built mine primarily using them. All the immense variety of space probes and communication satellites is condensed to one example per category. This may only annoy people who are already familiar with the history of the space program, but I am among those people.

Otherwise, this is a fun and educational game... when it isn't being stupid or annoying, which is unfortunately often enough.

This game is amazing for its price. The basics:
The game is a space race against other countries. Research better technologies and construct rockets to travel into space. It isn't an easy task. The space missions require strategy and space is a harsh place. Heat, cold and radiation are challenges that play a big role. The ultimate goal is to be the first to set foot on Mars and win the space race. Don't worry about being slow. You still beat the game even if you aren't the first on Mars.

Overall a great game that has so much potential to be a really strong franchise.

    Like:
    - The game can be as immersive and techinical as you would like. It has a place for huge space program nerds like myself but also can be reined in an enjoyable for the casual game player.
    - There is no DLC. The experience of the game is great out of the box and that is refreshing.
    - Easy to hop in and out of.

    Dislike (All very minor)
    - I wish there was more historical cold war space race drama involved.
    - No central way to keep track of how your program is doing or metric in which to measure it.
    - Theres a couple UI things that could be cleaned up to make it easier to jump back and forth. For example it would be nice if on the solar system you could easily switch between planets using hotkeys so you can see which missions you have available more easily.

Like i said though. Incredible concept that give you a really immersive experience.

Mars Horizon is a turn-based space agency management and simulation game that starts you in 1957 as the head of one of five space agencies, representing the United States, the Soviet Union, China, Japan, and Europe. Throughout the game you’ll launch missions, build a base, and research technologies with the ultimate goal of being the first agency to establish a manned presence on Mars.

Completing missions gives you research points and public support. Research points are used to unlock additional payloads, rockets, and buildings. Public support is tied to monthly funding, which you’ll need to increase as the game progresses: late game payloads and rockets are far more expensive than those in the early game. The first time you complete a mission it's considered a “Milestone Mission” and gives additional rewards to the first, second, and third agency to accomplish it. Once completed, these missions can reoccur as either “Request” or “Joint” missions with other agencies.

Within each mission are a varying number of phases. A simpler mission will typically involve building the payload, designing and building the launch vehicle, and scheduling and launching the rocket. If this sounds complicated, it’s really not. The game does a good job of walking you through the steps and will stop you from some obvious mistakes - such as setting up a rocket incapable of meeting mission parameters.

Some missions have additional stages beyond launch, such as performing an EVA or mid mission maneuvering corrections. These are done via mini games in which you have to balance and exchange various different resources to meet an objective.

Both payloads and rockets have reliability. When you go to launch, the game rolls dice behind the scenes: a poor enough roll can result in a critical failure with both rocket and payload destroyed. On the other hand, a very good roll can result in mission bonuses. You can’t totally remove risk here but you can mitigate it. Payload reliability affects the ability to complete the required mission phases while in space. The game does model launch windows depending on the mission, so a given month may fall into optimal, sub-optimal, or an invalid launch condition. You have to balance whether waiting for an optimal month is worth the lost time and productivity.

The game features some base building elements. As you research additional buildings, you’ll be able to clear out the area around your base and choose the location to build them. Certain building types have adjacency bonuses or penalties so the game does reward thoughtful placement. You’ll need a lot of buildings - additional mission control buildings for mission slots, larger launch pads for bigger rockets, astronaut training facilities, and so on.

The game’s mission tree follows a roughly historic track, with early missions involving orbiting satellites around the Earth and moon and launching the first animal and then human into space. Mid game missions involve launching space stations, a manned lunar landing, and exploration of more distant planets. Late game missions involve building a modular space station (essentially the ISS), sending Mars rovers, and larger satellites to Earth orbit such as space telescopes.

My biggest issue with this game is the mid-mission resource minigame is just not fun. Some long missions will require you to play some variation of this mini-game a number of times, and it just never clicked with me. Fortunately, at game launch there's an option to auto-resolve these: I recommend always enabling this.

Rival space agencies are not well balanced: some have objectively better base maps, payloads, or rockets. The Chinese agency is the most obvious example: they're able to get access to a crewed lunar lander that's massively lighter than any of the other agencies, which basically means the race to the moon is theirs to lose. As a side note, if the player chooses custom agency settings it’s easy to create an overpowered agency, particularly if you’re okay with save scumming.

Mission balance is also an issue. Most of the manned missions and the outer planet flybys are not worth the time and expense. If you’re playing on high difficulty you’re better off sticking to unmanned missions in the inner planets until the very late game.

My last piece of criticism has to do with the pace of the mid to late game. It can get a bit grindy, churning out the same missions over and over to get the required research for the Mars projects. The competition with other agencies has also usually fallen off by this point. Either you are so far ahead that no one will catch you, or somebody else is too far ahead and you have no chance of catching them. The early game missions have a sort of tension because everybody starts at the same point. You might be in a situation where you have to choose whether to risk a bad weather launch and get to the milestone first (and get bonus rewards), or play it safe, wait for better weather, and let somebody beat you to it. The farther you get into the game the less likely you are to see this kind of scenario.

So, is Mars Horizon worth playing? If you have any kind of interest in space exploration or rocketry you’ll probably enjoy this. There aren't a lot of releases in this genre, and even with its flaws, this is still a fun game. If you're on the fence I would recommend waiting for a sale.

It'll keep you busy for awhile. Lots of RNG, mini-games get old pretty quick, not much replay value. The AI may be cheating. It can seem more like work than playing a game. You can finish the game using only a fraction of the items available. Many rockets and base components are simply not needed. Experimentation with different rocket designs is not possible due to your need to beat your competition and budget constraints. Because of this, game-play is very linear.

That said, if you like incremental progression games you may enjoy this. You're always trying to be able to build that next generation rocket or research the next base improvement or mission. Rocket assembly is simple but not too boring. The graphics are ok. Mission planning was pretty good. The transit times for space travel were realistic. The types of rockets were historically accurate. There were a good number of different types of missions to do, although they strongly followed the historical timeline.

Not a bad game but not great fun. Really more of a simplistic simulation of historical events. It'll keep you busy for a while.

Really fun game for the first half, up to about the Apollo program. But truly the moment I did Apollo I just could not be bothered to play anymore--each phase of each mission requires you to play (the same) minigame to complete it. Theoretically these are skippable (except for the first of each type of mission), but there's a small chance of failure for skipping and a very small chance of extra resources, so in terms of gameplay, skipping is really suboptimal. And when you get to Apollo, you have to do 5 of these in a row. There's nothing wrong with them, they are just a little tedious. It's not what I want to play the game for.

The tile-based building portion of the game is super underdone--there's no fun to be had there. The rocket designer is interesting sometimes, but usually I just reuse the same design over and over and maybe swap contractors--no fun there. Research and diplomacy are barely even systems, just stuff to enable other parts of the game. It is really just the minigames that forms the content of the game, and it's thin, unfortunately.

Every so often, I find a game that just grabs me. It's not the flashiest or most complex, but it gets hold of me to the point I find myself going "what do you mean I've been playing for six hours?". Mars Horizon is just such a game. At its core it's an alt-history sandbox starting at the dawn of the space race and going until you found a colony on Mars. It shifts between managing your space agency (choosing research, missions, rocket and base design, etc.) and optional mini-games to determine the success of each mission.

Missions often involve multiple mini-games and a single playthrough can take 50 hours or more if you're not beelining through milestone missions, so Mars Horizon is more likely to appeal to those of a meticulous nature. There are other annoyances, such as AI competitors launching advanced missions out of seemingly nowhere and China's desert-based launch facility getting tropical rainforest levels of precipitation, but all told the game is a good time. You can customize your own space agency, there are ample role-playing opportunities, and the cooperation of the European Space Agency lends some needed realism and legitimacy to the game's scientific angle. Try the demo for yourself and see if the balance between management and mini-game appeals to you. Good luck, Commander.
