From the dawn of history to the Roman Civil Wars, from Iberia to Cyprus, revive the ancient naval battles of the Mediterranean. 24 historic naval battles, including Salamis, the final defeat of Xerxes in Greece, and Actium, Downfall of Antony and Cleopatra.
Choose between fourteen ship types, ranging from the small and primitive penteconter to the powerful decares and wage war in historic naval battles. Ram enemy ships, board them, or make use of your on-board harpax to make their encounter with Neptune the last!
Squadron system with chain of command, the ships needs to be under command to be able to receive orders. Admirals and commanders have special abilities and a squadron range, lines of ships could be arranged out of this range to give command to all of them. Gameplay includes crew fatigue, atmospheric phenomena like fog, rain and a variable wind system and special rules for treasure ships, local command, plague, anchored ships and transports.
Naval Squadrons employ real tactics of that time, and the WEGO system will force you to think three moves ahead of your opponent. Multiplayer mode allows multiple historical and skirmish battles to be played by two players using Slitherine’s easy to use PBEM+ system.

This game fills a unique position, as there really aren't many games on the market which let you tactically engage with the galley warfare of the ancient Mediterranean, even though these tactics are some of the most interesting battles of the ancient world, and the fundamentals of the strategy aren't that hard to understand. I wouldn't pick up this game at full price, as it has pretty limited ambition, but at 5 USD, it's a good deal if you are an ancient history fan.
I love that this exists, I would describe it as Combat Mission but for ancient naval warfare. It has command radii like CM, WEGO, 60-second turns, you can fast-forward to get through boring/uneventful parts of a battle. I enjoyed playing while listening to a podcast as a way to relax. Learning about ancient naval warfare is very interesting, these units are nothing like land warfare units you may be used to from Combat Mission.
Bought this to play against a friend, not for solo play. Very primitive controls and battle feedback. Most battles hard to tell what is going on or even who is really winning. Battle replay in multiplayer mode too cluttered. Good sound effects, horrible intro song (turned it off). Seemed like a great concept, but the implementation is too crude to enjoy.
Ships have mind of their own. Just cannot get my head around this. Looks fun but soon becomes frustrating.
A very slick and refined game with an amazing amount of content (shiptypes, factions, scenarios, settings). the turn based WEGO game mechanism works perfectly for huge formations of lumbering galleys. Worth every penny if you have thing for turn based naval games.

Runs and fails - like any of the games on this site. Where is the maintenance and file cleaning? No, you pay your money and get an un-supported piece of code.
Lots of fun to play. It would be nice if historical tactics were workable here, but the game is a lot of fun to play.

This was on my wishlist for a year and a half and I'm glad I pulled the trigger. The game is made with the unity engine which makes battles run well and offer visual interest. The controls are easy to pick up but I can tell it'll take me a while to hone my skills.
If you like Field of Glory II, or ancient warfare in general, this is worth the price.
Great little game with a unik subject matter: Ancient Naval Battles.
The gameplay and tactics are deeper than you should think, and the graphics (though basic), looks good and clear.
The campaigns are interesting and different, and should give you many hours of quality gametime.
It's not worth the full price, but at half price on sale, it's a little gem for fans of Ancient warfare.

After Qvadriga comes another nice little game from Turnopia! This time covering the ancient naval battles in the Mediterranean Sea (also called Mare Nostrum in latin).
It's a simultaneous turns type of game, and feels very challenging to command the fleets with yout captains and admirals.
It's not a game for everyone, but for an hardcore wargames player and history fans it's almost a musthave. Maybe the price is a little too high, but it's currently (timeof review autumn sales 2018) somthing like 6€, and it's worth every cent!
The graphic is simple yet nice, but the core mechanics is where the game shine, a little gem.

Like many on the forums I want to like this game. This is a *great* subject matter for a game, the devs have clearly put in a lot of work, there are an excellent mix of scenarios. But because of the issues below buy only if you have serious subject matter interest and then be ready to get annoyed at the game:
Using hexes can't go wrong, everybody does it. Except when you then invent half hexes, when a unit is in neither one hex nor the other. Makes no sense at all and is counter intuitive - if you're going to segment the board into spaces, use the spaces you create, don't then create 'mini spaces' which are invisible unless you know they are there, that have their own specific rules (like requiring you to reverse back out again to regain control).
The stacking limit is (I think) one of each ship per hex, except when a ship is captured and then what? The rules of the game are unclear, particularly in regard to maneuver which when mixed with the awful half hexes above makes the game hard to love.
Ramming is absolutely a random stroke of luck. Sure you can try to aim for the enemy, but they move 4-7 hexes and so do you. The turns are too long for that kind of guesswork. Half-length turns would have been a much better decision.
The half speed effect of friendly ships trying to stack doesn't seem to work very well - often your entire formation crawls to a halt for some undeterminable reason.
Shooting kills troops, but ships never strike - so what's the point?
Do i have to then go and capture them? I don't know, the manual doesn't tell me.
All in all, this is a good indie effort purely because of the subject matter but there are some pretty awful design decisions here that they will not be able to code themselves out of at this point..
A good tactical wargame.
Its from the makers of Qvadriga, and carries over much of the feel of that game. Relatively simple mechanics given depth by the interaction of lots of moving parts (well, moving triremes). It is a Wego format, so a decent part of the tactics is anticipating where the enemy triremes will move to and trying to aim to ram into their sides.
There is a major focus on positioning, which makes it feel a little like Fields of Glory on the ocean.
The game it's self is good and you should buy it.
So after trying the tutorial battle, then reading the manual(takes about 15 mins) and then replaying the tutorial, here are my thoughts:
This is a turn based(WEGO system, my favorite) "tabletop" style wargame, with utilitarian graphics. It is easy to get into but still feels challenging to play.
I would highly recommend this game to anyone who likes this period of history, likes TB wargames and doesn't mind minimalist graphics. If you're an RTS kind of gamer who needs state of the art "bells & whistles", stay away from this one.
