TLDR: Good soundblaster audio tracks. Poor level design. Consumable items are mostly useless. Poor hitboxing. Improper Xbox360 pad controls. No ingame map. No sound FX.
Controls Note(Steam Forums):
Control of Brian is achieved mainly by joystick
Right - Moves Right
Left - Moves Left
Up - Jumps
Down - Fires Selected Special Weapon
However you will also need to use the keyboard for some funtions.
SPACE - Select Special Weapon
RETURN - Enter Door (IN MY CASE, IT IS "ENTER" THAT WORKS!)
F1 - Pause
F2 - Slows internal clock of game engine
F3 - Speeds Internal clock of game
F10 - Quit
P - Pause Game (DO NOT WORK WITH ME)
TLDR: Dosbox sidescroll hack&slash with minor 2D environment exploration, health system and odd combat. Joystick doesnt pick all keys so you end up having to KB+M mostly. No SFX sound only music.
Game fullscreened ran seemingly well and the audio for the music and the art was pleasant. The game is a tiny bit grindy but not too hard yet still a tad tricky due to the odd hitboxing and slightly armstrung controls.
The animation work looks pretty good for a game of this caliber and the core gameplay is a tried and tested formula and the implementation here works alright.
There is a well designed health system and basic itemization and coinage.
No XP, much of any special ability, linear however.
You can only use joystick for combat, leaving engaging with doors, shopkeepers and navigating the item selection is all done separately through KBM. No obvious way of rebinding or configuring.
You also sort of have to reverse engineer the controls by trial and error. They are logical but might not be your first try.
Hard for me to recommend even for just a dollard or two... the gameplay loop is not really enjoyable due to the shortcomings. This game uses a mteroidvania level design but no maps, leaving you guessing where to go. Most of the items you can purchase are useless. Grinding coins for those items can take a long time. The hitboxing is very poor, your sword barely reaches anywhere and being near a mushroom without touching it can get you hurt many times. Altogether even something simple like 8bitBoy is much better done than those old Dos Titles. So I will just remove it permanently for declutter. It is too bad because the sprites still had some charm despite the very brown color palette and the soundblaster music was as awesome as when I was a kid. But that is not enough to carry the game through especially since there are no sounds for hitting other creatures, getting hurt etc, I remember them being there on PC speaker at least when I was a kid.
I was lucky enough to have grown up with a dad who had loved computers during the golden age of DOS gaming and even earlier. However, most of my favorite games were a mix of DOS & NES games though my NES was stolen so I was only left with playing DOS games through most of my childhood. It was probably a good thing because I may never have discovered gems like this game. This game does take most of its inspiration from Wonderboy in Monsterland but in some ways does it better. The music is top notch and gameplay hits the sweetspot for me, Difficult. If you are looking for a true sidescroller from the early 90's to go with your Commander Keen or Duken Nukem 1 & 2 collection then add this to it and support the guys who are keeping these games alive on steam.
