Using fists, feet and whatever weapons come to hand, the EIGHT DRAGONS must fight their way from one end of the city to the other, to reach their ultimate showdown. But each Dragon has a different path - it's only when they come together that their true destiny is unlocked, as their stories intertwine and the full epic fight is revealed!
Up to eight people can play co-operatively on one PC, with any combination of controllers and keyboard!
Each of the EIGHT DRAGONS has their own story, with its own route through the city and its own characters to fight on the way. In multiplayer, those stories combine and expand on each other.
If you're looking for a consistent challenge to improve against, then the Arcade mode will give you that - a fixed path through the game, with MR BIG awaiting you at the final level!
With adjustable game speed and difficulty, you can make the game as hard, easy, fast or slow as you like!

Not as good as Renegade or Target Renegade on the 8-bits. It just doesn't feel right. Too many keys. Enemies taking hits when they shouldn't do - ie. when I'm kicking in the opposite direction. Back-kicks and flying-kicks look rubbish. Enemies follow too closely when I move - There should be a slight delay.
The game started in a resolution which didn't fit on my screen, and then the alternative resolutions offered are bizarrely limited. My monitor is 1680x1050 but this was not supported. Even 1920x1080 is not supported.
Mouse pointer stays on the screen when the game is in play.
On the positive side, the game looks nice. Sounds are ok too.
Nice as remake, not so good as beat'em up

Eight Dragons is a nice classic inspired beat em up game that you can play with up to 8 players locally, It has 8 different characters a story mode and an arcade mode, It also has a nice soundtrack.
Story & Characters 7/10
There is not much of a story, The game has a story mode but it is not much different from arcade mode with a small scripted dialogue when you start and a short slideshow at the end. All characters do have their own story, Their own order of 5 levels, In multiplayer these stories will combine in 1 story and you will have to play some more levels.
There are 8 playable characters, I like the looks of the characters, they are all very different, But they lack a bit of dept, Who are they, what do they do? Why do they fight? The animations could be a bit better.
Gamemodes & Gameplay 8/10
The game has a few different gamemodes, The Story mode will set a path depending on which characters are playing. Arcade mode is a path set not dependend on which character you Pick, Super arcade which is the same but with a different order of levels. And Score attack, Which allows you to play a single level and set a high score.
All gamemodes can be played with up to 8 players locally, I have only tried it with 5 so far and this was working fine. I think this is the killer feature of the game, Without it I would probably not have reviewed the game.
I think the gameplay is a bit stale, Surely it is a great loveletter to the classics from the 90s, But we are not the 90s, I would expect some next gen elements. All characters have the same moveset, Maybe they kick a bit different, But it is all jump, hit, pickup and jumpkick. It gets repetitive pretty fast.
Graphics & Soundtrack 9/10
I think the game looks great, Especially the backgrounds, A lot of little hints to classic fighting games like Streets of Rage and River City Ransom. The characters all look different, There is a lot of variation in enemies and there are some nice bosses. The soundtrack is also great, It truly feels like a classic.
Performance & Support 7/10
It runs just fine, I do not like the FPS lock, And the colors seem to fade a bit if you turn off the CRT filter, which is a shame, Because I really hate CRT filters but I love the colors. But the game runs fine, I encountered 0 crashes, I think I played about 10 games? Some achievements do fail to unlock, At least finish the story mode with X character for several characters And maybe more.
Endgame & Replayability 7/10
I think the game has an okay replay value, But it certainly could do better, The nice scenery helps a lot, but a lot of things hold the game back. I would not mind playing the game twice, But completing all stories feels a bit like a chore because it is too easy or too hard and you have a limited moveset especially if you are surrounded jumpkicking is your only option. I ended up just jumpkicking the whole time, And I noticed it was about what everyone was doing. So in the end you just end up repeating the same move over and over again.
Improvements
I see a lot of potentional but the game should first and foremost get a proper UI, It looks kinda horrible, The UI for the controller support is where it is most horrific.
I think the animations could be better, the characters move a little like they are made of rubber, Their arms all wiggly and stuff, I would also love to see more levels, And maybe a random level order mode or a Versus mode?
I think the game feels a bit bland because you jump kick the whole game, I wish there where more different attacks, Low and high attacks, maybe even a fourth button? or enemies that block a jump kick?
I also think the game could use more playable characters, When you can play with 8, 8 playable characters is the minimum, They would also benefit from a bigger moveset and a bit of background, Maybe a real story mode even if it is simple.
Conclusion 7/10
The game left Early Access not too long ago, But I do hope they will keep on improving the game, I feel it can use a bit more polish, It does have about 11 levels and a lot of enemy types. The 8 player local multiplayer is the killer feature, But I imagine not a lot of people have 8 controllers. I would recommend it to play a few rounds if you like classic beat em ups, But in its current state it is not for longer consumption.

Great idea. Great look. But..................... For those who, like me, loved Target Renegade and Renegade in Spectrum, and were always looking for some remake, some homage, some tribute, some modern game that got inspired on those classics, this one, seemed to be a good choice. Sadly, i think it lacks of something that Target and Renegade, had in plenty: flow and gameplay/playability. Im playing it in a VERY low resources PC, so maybe that has some or a lot of influence in the way im experiencing the game. So, i want to say that very clear.
I could play Target and Renegade a hundred times. And mother russia bleeds too. Theres gameplay and playability there. But on this, i could only play some minutes....
I got the sense of an android game for cellphones, roughly transported to PC. The optics are great, but theres no playability at all. Im not saying this to *destroy* this game. I wish it keeps getting updated and worked on. But this was my sincere take on it. Thanks.
As a long time fan of scrolling beat 'em ups, Eight Dragons brings the genre back to basics which it does with terrific style.
I couldn't help but be reminded of Konami's Crime Fighters when I first looked at the game in motion, it just seems to capture something from that game and that era which is so vital when making a game like this.
Dropping in subtle and not so subtle (the shop names! haha) references to old beat 'em ups was a really nice touch. I really enjoyed the back and forth elevator level that was an obvious nod to the first stage of Target Renegade.
Loads of characters, a massive (for this genre) online multiplayer mode, multiple stories, it has the lot.
A great game, one that fans of older arcade beat 'em ups will love!
Probably the best Target: Renegade/Double Dragon retro style remake game I've played. The graphics are beautiful and the controls are smooth. (I've been using the Steam Controller). A really awesome arcade soundtrack also. Different game modes, Steam Leaderboards and Steam Achievements. Game feels solid and well made. 10/10. Awesome Steam game.
This is a fun game that the developers are actively working on. Double Dragon with a good sense of humor. Weapons, clean, crisp retro graphics and satisfying action.
If you are lucky enough to have 7 other friends then you are in for a real treat, but having said that I had a blast playing this game solo.
Anyone who has played Double Dragon or Renegade will feel right at home. The retro style graphics and it's 80s style aesthetic takes you back to those days of at the arcade or loading tapes on your Amstrad .
With constant updates being rolled out, this is certainly one to keep an eye on.
If you love classic beat em ups you'll love Eight Dragons. Very simple controls makes it easy to play, I really enjoy the pixel art that gives it that classic 80s feel. You can play with up to 8 people on screen at once, I haven't been able to do it but it sounds insane. No online, but there is a leader board that tracks your scores in the arcade mode. The developers are making slight updates to the game and take community feedback. Definitely give Eight Dragons a chance.
Ok where do I start with this little gem of a game. ok I know.... This game is sooooooo much fun it is unreal, It has been a long time since I enjoyed a game this much. Everything from the sound effects to the controls just oozes the 90`s.
Graphics: Graphics are very retro pixel style with the details of the levels been akin to one of my all time favourite games on the spectrum target renegade. The animations of the characters are fantastic each player character having their own unique style.
Sound: They sound like they have been ripped from the 90`s from the cracking fists to the crunching of been kneed in the family allowance. They fit the ambience of the environment very well and are just what you expect a 90`s brawler to sound like.
Control: The controls for the game are confusing at first but once you get used to them become second nature. The character auto turns towards the nearest enemy enabling you to give devastating attacks to the enemy. With each character having their own unique fighting styles they have their own animations for each move they perform.
Gameplay: For me this is where this game shines as when I first started playing the game it instantly took me back to when I played target renegade on the spectrum omg I loved that game and spent hours upon hours playing it. I love brawlers they have this charm that pulls me in everytime.
Verdict: 7/10 The game is way too much fun and obviously been early access has features and stories currently been developed for it and I honestly can`t wait for the release of this game.
It's still in early access, but this is already one of the best fighting games i have played. It looks and sounds like it is right out of the nineties, my era, like a Streets of Rage game that Sega or the other publishers never got around to making. I really love it for that, and so many other reasons. Its a shame there are not more games of this style.
With One or Two players it is a kind of tactical game where you pick off the enemies as quickly and as efficiently as you can.
You cannot just wade in hammering that fire button. You have really got to think about it. Do i go left first or right first ?
With four players, it starts to get proper crazy. The big tactics soon go out of the window and you just brawl your way through each baddie just to survive. I can just imagine what it would be like with eight players. WOW !!
Crank up the difficulty and it is tough but not to the point that it is unfair and you are always getting hit. There is usually a tactic you have to find when it gets tough and when you find it, it does get a bit easier.
It has a real nineties crunchy feel when you hit people, especially when you use the weapons, although i think some blood and gore would have made it more impactful.
So many levels to play, so many characters to play as. I feel like i have only scratched the surface with it.
With the weekly updates that they have said, it looks like i am going to feel that way for a while longer.
I did also hear on Twitter that they are going to bring in online play too.
Now's my chance to show those Battlefield gamers what nineties fighters are like.
Played a fair few hours of this with some mates the other day! It's a solid couch co-op game with great music and a really nice art style! It gets fairly spicy later on, which is perfect for couch co-op.
Definitely recommend picking this one up for a fun time with some pals!
