Warning: Dead PVP Game
This game has no meaningful single player content beyond botmatches, and no playable PvP servers. There is no functioning PvP population, it's a dead game, and cannot be played as intended.
Bohnanza The Duel is a digital version of the tabletop card game, Bohnanza, only with even less players than there are people in your house. Yes, even if you're the only person in your house. The idea of this card duelling game is that you are a bean farmer and you grow and harvest beans, and try to do this better than your opponent. There's a cartoony theme. When you consider people can play games like Hearthstone and MTG: Arena for free, it's no wonder nobody was interested in this.
The focus of this game is pure PvP, there's no single player content (it's just a card duelling game after all). Maybe they could have added some kind of campaign or story challenge, but they didn't, expecting somehow that other gamers would be an okay substitute for content. And this "method" developers use to avoid creating game content almost always fails. Just like it did here.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals.
The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just point and click stuff like a browser/Flash game. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The developers made the fatal, lazy mistake of believing that PvP, other players, would be an acceptable substitute for doing the difficult job of adding single player level design, storytelling, NPCs and other rich aspects of designed game content to the game. As a result of this choice by the developers, the game has little to no actual interactive game content. It's a little considered fact that the vast majority of PvP only, multiplayer only games fail. Developers must learn that other players are not an acceptable substitute for doing the job of game developers and building a game filled with content. PvP only games must have a huge player base for them to "go viral" and succeed. But with no single player experience to add lasting value to a game, the developers instead chose to bet against all odds that their game would "go viral" without any actual reason for players to want to play the game. Predictably, they lost this bet.
You don't have to take my word about how bad the game is, we can measure the interest in a game by how much people bothered to play it. Bohnanza The Duel has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game absolutely failed to capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is "Noob", playing an online match (admittedly not so easy to do with no players), trivial to achieve, but less than 3 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. That's a tiny, tiny proportion of gamers who even bothered with this. Ouch.
The poor quality of this game is also reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 7 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
Unethically, the developers have left this on the Steam store in a dead, abandoned and unplayable state (because there's no players and no meaningful single player content). It's the responsibility of the developer to maintain their product, ensure it runs on all modern PCs, or if they determine there's defects and the game doesn't work, or the population dies, they should remove it from sale instead of misleadingly trying to scam gamers into buying knowingly dead/unplayable products.
This is harmful to Steam and to gamers, not just because it's a direct and intentional attempt to scam people, but because it takes a share of the marketing space and visibility away from other games. It's polluting Steam and making it harder for gamers to find genuine games and for genuine indie developers who put months or years into making proper games find an audience.
You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement. This agreement includes questionable (and possibly law breaching) privacy requirements that no gamer should ever have to engage in. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not control them. I had my cat walk over the keyboard while the EULA was displaying, which fixed that problem for me.
This game not only requires, but automatically and without your permission creates accounts and profiles for you on a platform run by the developer. I didn't ask for this and I didn't want it, and it's also not necessary for making multiplayer games on Steam. There is ZERO justification for this as Steam handles everything the game needs without this, this is just a consumer hostile move by a less than trustworthy developer. Gamers should be warned about this because it's completely understandable to want to avoid this product for that reason alone.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
The developer is deliberately and unethically trying to scam gamers into paying them the farcical price of $4 USD for a game they know is abandoned, dead and unplayable. Don't give it to them. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
Stays frozen after 1 minute. Rubbish.
The tutorial wasn't very helpful. Also, as others have said, the UI isn't great either, but I felt it really just took some getting used to. The game itself is actually very fun, so if you are willing to learn the rules on your own and don't mind getting the hang of the UI, then I think you'll want to check this out.
Worst UI I've ever experienced. I wrote a command line version of this game with a friend, and it is a much smoother user experience. This game makes no fucking sense. I can never get the last hour of frustration back. I'd pay the developers $4 to not have to play this game.
This is an extremely poor implementation, and Digidiced should be extremely ashamed. I'm definitely going to think twice before ever purchasing another one of their games.
Pro:
+ The game itself is brilliant and deserves to be implemented by a much more professional studio.
Con:
- The interface can't tell where you are trying to drag a card half the time.
- The game does not recognize legal moves half the time. (The target area is dimmed out as if the move were illegal.)
- The button that is supposed to bring up the rules manual sends you to a dead web page, so you're on your own if you want to read the full rules of the game you have purchased.
- There is no button in the interface to close the game. You MUST use the Esc key on your keyboard. This may seem like a petty complaint, but it's actually very important to some of us, and it's not that hard to implement. It's just plain lazy and unprofessional to leave something like this out.
- The music is terrible. Yes, you can turn it off, and I did, but it's part of the purchase price. I don't want to pay even a single penny to the person responsible for bringing this aural monstrosity into the world.
In summary, I can't believe I'm actually going to ask for a refund of a game that cost less than a dollar on sale, but I think I have to. I don't see any reason to keep a game that simply does not work. In fact, I think everyone who has bought this game should report it as broken. I already have!
It's entertaining from the very beginning, but after a couple of games have been played and you begin to understand the strategy better, that's when it really becomes fun. The theme based on a German word pun between "bean" and "bonanza" is whatever. I would argue that the game is fun despite it's theme. Not that I hate the theme. After a while I started to warm up to those goofy bean characters.
Interesting adaptation of the Card Game with the added bonus feature.
The user interface is HORRIBLE. It is all but intuitive, discarding a card is next to impossible. Until fixed, please don't spend the money, or expect to loose your sanity over the bugs of the game.
Bottom line: If you are looking for a chilled but still challenging 1vs1 game for you and your partner - take it.
This game is literally underrated on steam ("mixed"). It is fun and close to a stealer for 4€.
For those who doesn't know the game: it's a ~45 minutes, 2 players, interactive, fun and decent challenging (12+ years) card game. We play it as a couple and have much fun with it. You plan, calculate, fool your opponent, make decisions. It's based on a real card game, originally from a german publisher from 1998. (This version, "the duel" from 2016, is for two players). Board game geeks rates this game with 6,9.
This PC version is based on the mobile version. Could the UI be better here and there? Maybe. Is it bad and clunky? No. It does definitly it's job! Haven't faced any bug in 3 hours of gameplay. Just notice a minor thing: the discard pile "hitbox" could be better but you will get accustomed to it quickly.
Tip: If you haven't played the physical version before I recommend to watch a lets play on youtube about this game. The tutorial is ok, but sometimes it was a bit confusing for me. Watching others play helped me a lot.
I don`t know why all this negative comments about this app. I just finished my third game and this never crashed, never stopped working. Yes, it is not the most intuitive and not the AI is not very fast, but it is ok.
It is very important to watch Rahdo runthrough for this card game, in order to understand very fast what is happening here.
And the AI it is challenging enough.
Just drag the cards you want to plant with your mouse, click and offer a gift, or drag the beans on the field you want to sell.
It is that simple to use this app.
Could use some polishing on the user interface but it is still very good and fun.
My boyfriend and I have bonded over the hatred and frustration of this game. If you want a good laugh and have your patience tested because this game is so poorly made then get it. It's really bad, though. It's like they made the game and didn't have anyone test play it before they put it out there.
Decent implementation of a simple but entertaining game. Can't speak much for multiplayer, but the AI opponents pose enough of a challenge to be fun.
Worst game I have ever played on stream. Setting not very good. Playabilty is awful nothing is intuitive very hard game to play.
This game CONSTANTLY gets "stuck" mid game. I've never actually been able to complete a game. I'll make a move, then the computer player will make a move, then the game just sits there with no actions available to either player. I'm only able to play about 5 mins at a time. Don't purchase.
I'm very confused about this. I'm sure they use computers to make these phone games. I assume they use a keyboard and mouse/touchpad to navigate the programming interface, be it C++, Unity, or whatever. Yet the game is released on PC with a phone/tablet interface that is just so awkward to use. It seems like adapting the games interface to mouse and keyboard should be the simplest part of porting to PC.
I wish some developers could be forced to use Unity on a touchscreen only with an onscreen keyboard and get a taste of how important the interface of software should match the hardware it's used on.
Ranting aside..
I recommend the game on its mechanics alone, plus I just don't care much about playing games on phones and tablets or I'd go that route.
A fun card game that requires some strategy. The mechanism where you have to give a card to your adversary each turn (with a possibility of counter offer) is really interesting. The tutorial is O.K., and I understood some rules better when I read the manual. The presentation is nice and the interface works well. I would like a possibility to click on a card and a destination (instead of drag and drop) and a few keyboard shortcuts (at least space or enter to confirm), but that's not a big problem. For now, as a beginner, I lost three times against the easy AI, I appreciate the challenge. A good game.
I love Bohnanza as a table-top game, and really wanted to love it as a computer game, but unfortunately...
The main problem is the user interface. I literally was unable to complete the tutorial as I was unable to figure out how to do what was being asked. I googled/youtubed for an answer to no avail. After about 20 minutes of flailing around I gave up and asked for a refund (first time in well over 100 games bought on steam).
Maybe after this game has been out for awhile and has a good user base, with plenty of help artifacts on the web, it will be a good game. But for now, it's unplayable for me.
Not really...
This is a painful review to write. I have enjoyed other games by this developer. The underlying game is a fun one, and I've got multiple games by the game designer. This game, on this implementation... it doesn't make the transition to a desktop game properly (from its mobile version).
There are many points in there where the interface just isn't right. Things like "drag off the screen" - that doesn't work well in a windowed application. The skeuomorphic ideals of "you just drag the card to the discard area" the tablet don't work on the desktop smoothly. Its nice, its cute... but it doesn't work. Its the same reason why tabletop simulators often feel clumsy.
There is too much dragging in the game where there doesn't need to be (vs select and click). The interface poorly matches the reality of a desktop. Unless one is familar with the card game itself (the tutorial isn't the best of tutorials), has played the mobile version, and is willing to overlook the clumsiness of the desktop version - I've gotta say don't get it. At least not until the devs really sit down and try to understand how the interface for a desktop application doesn't always match that of a mobile version.
I've seen other mobile games make the transition. This one just isn't there.
