only in italian. not very beginner friendly, a lot of text and it disappears quickly. some characters are very difficult to understand too.
it's an okay short game, really tests your italian comprehension.
Onironauta is an old school Kings Quest/Monkey Island style point and click adventure game slapped together badly with the Adventure Game Studio construction kit (not a particularly good construction kit at all). It's from Gabon (as far as I can tell), so congratulations to Central African countries for not letting Russia and Brazil hog all the shovelware production for Steam.
There's no English translation for the game, but that's ok. It turns out, the language of bad games is universal. The game has you controlling yourself in a lucid dream (which just means they didn't really want to write some kind of cohesive plot and you just wander around scenes like dungeons or your house or whatever). A poor concept delivered poorly.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
The artwork here is terrible, it's some of the most amateurish MS-Paint style drawings I've ever hurt my eyes on. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget to arrange someone who can do graphics properly, or lack of talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result of these decisions. This game made me genuinely wish I was reviewing another asset flip, because at least asset flips usually look "okay" compared to whatever this train wreck is. I mean, the screenshots speak for themselves here.
There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. There's no way for gamers to try improve the low quality graphics.
The implementation here is of such poor quality, the developer couldn't work out how to make the game display in fullscreen, it only runs in a window.
The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers.
Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the video game construction kit/toolset, Adventure Game Studio. This is a very poor quality toolset sometimes used by amateur/unskilled developers as it doesn't require advanced game development skills, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine.
The very poor quality of this game puts it squarely on-par with ancient 1990's Flash/Java games, and given it's 2023 (and this was released not so far back in 2017), gamers and the industry expect and deserve better than this kind of low effort shovelware.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
Onironauta is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.
