The game is good. However, you need to fix it before you play it. you need to spend 20 minutes and have just a bit of knowledge of how files work to fix the finding the file error and the FPS error. I think it's worth it, but it's absurd it's sold in the state where you have to fix it before playing.
Great story and loved this on the console back in the day | Played it again on IOS years ago and now I'm back to have another play through on PC.
Mouse sensitivity is unreal so you'll need to sort that out | Game wont load for some people so what you'll need to do one of the following if you get the failed to find steam error
1. Make sure your you have a copy of 'Steam.dll' in your JadeEmpire install folder. You can find the steam.dll in your main steam install folder, for example C:\Steam. Just right click on it and copy. Go to your Jade Empire folder and right click, paste. While you're in the JE folder, make sure you also have 'steam_app_id.txt' in there as well - if you dont, create one and have 7110 in text written in there.
2. Run JadeEmpirelauncher.exe as admin from install folder NOT through steam
If that doenst work -
1. Rename JadeEmpireLauncher.exe to JadeEmpireLauncher(bak).exe
2. Rename JadeEmpire.exe to JadeEmpireLauncher.exe.
Last help - if you screw around with the setting in game - you can edit the JadeEmpire.ini file in the install folder - defaults below;

Jade empire was the first real RPG I ever played fully and will always have a special place in my heart. While the games setting may not be as impressive nowadays now that Chinese developers are able to release Wuxia rpg’s to the west at the time for a boy growing up in rural south western Ontario fantasy chinos was an exotic and exciting local.
I Originally played this on a friends Xbox that they gave our family due to them getting an Xbox 360. This game was one of four discs that they gave us free of charge, I was enchanted by the combat system not simply being different weapons but also different fighting styles, some even transforming you into monsters!
A really cool hidden gem in BioWares catalog that is sadly forgotten nowadays with a cool original setting that stands out compared to biowares other more traditional franchises. While it might take a little work to get running a charming game that is worth a peek into a transitional period of rpg’s and BioWare the company itself.
I played this on the original Xbox and completed it and it is actually much better on pc. I have really enjoyed the series and I highly recommend it if your into feeling some nostalgia and enjoying a really good story in a mythical similar ancient China but not quite.
Pre-Review: Even when you can get the game to work, it's super fucking choppy and unplayable on modern systems, sadly. As far as I am aware there is no character customization either, good to know I was led astray yet again by Electronic Arts & BioWare. There are only presets. You are not even able to change their names. Enjoy the pittance, it's the last you're going to get from me.

The choppiness I leave to you to figure out. It could be my system but I highly fucking doubt it. My machine is more than capable of running it. Should be anyway. I'll update this review if I ever figure it out. Doubt I will, I already have a sour taste in my mouth from this shitstain of abandon-ware. Go check the guides, they might have something, I sure as hell don't.
This game is in a very sad state and honestly should be taken off of steam until its actually playable and fixed properly. Which is very sad, considering this was [and in some cases still is] one of BioWares better games [KOTOR 1 & 2 being better in every regard]! I'm glad I got it on sale for $3.74. It's not even worth that currently! Hell when you buy the game you have to insert the steam.dll and make your own SystemInformation.xml [abiet blank, but still the point still stands] yourself! When I buy a game, I want a playable and complete game. Not abandon-ware that doesn't even fucking work. Remember when games came completed and worked out of the box? I do.

Good game. Took a little while to get it running but is well worth it if you are willing to put 30 minutes to an hour into getting it to work.
I have a confession to make. I kinda don't get Jade Empire?
I picked this up because a friend of mine recommended it and I saw this game being brought up in 'underrated gems' a lot. And sure, I've played the ME Trilogy and DAO. I like Bioware games. But after finishing this I honestly have no idea what to make of it.
Despite the marketing of different fighting styles being a big component, there really isn't any depth to combat. It's incredibly repetitive, frustratingly unresponsive and for the most part pretty unsatisfying, sometimes even cheap. The story is pretty basic, but the thing that makes me feel weirdest about it is the overall vibe. Its interpretation of Asian cultures is incredibly shallow, with this weird tacked on made-up language which sounds weird as hell. Not as weird of the top down shooting sections. Yep. For everything I fault it for though, I didn't hate it? Bioware obviously tried a bunch of new things, and they did so earnestly wearing their heart on their sleeve. Looking at the structure of the game, you can clearly see where some of the later entries were inspired by this. Honestly some of the ideas on display were sick and the characters were surprisingly good, I just feel like the gameplay has aged poorly. Idk man.
All I can say is, I don't regret playing it, despite everything, I feel vaguely positive towards it.
An excellent fantasy with an oriental twist. Each fighting style is based on an actual combat style. For example, tiger claw is an available combat style from the get-go. Although it carries a different name, you can clearly tell it's the Wushu, Tiger Claw or Bak Fu Pai. While the game is great as an introduction to the real life martial arts, I can't help but feel that actual knowledge of these arts would help the player achieve greater success in the game. Unfortunately I don't know enough about it to test that claim. Other wushu available are drunken fist (called drunken master), wing chun (called thousand cuts), and Buddhist Palm (called Iron Palm).
Now on to the story: It's a simple enough story. A chosen one exists in order to destroy the evil emperor. No complaints. I like that kind of story.

Will start by saying that I had more fun than i thought with this classic rpg experience, the game unfortunatelly is a nightmare to run since you can't run it through steam and you need go to the folder just to be able to start it. The story, altough a bit cliché was not bad and had a few twists, the companions you get are very one dimensional but have some funny dialogue sometimes, speaking of that i enjoyed what they did with the silent protagonist with lots of dialogue options to choose from.
The combat is a bit stiff and the targeting is weird sometimes but it works for what it is intended, they give you some variety of styles and weapons to use in battle, the game also has a morality system of good and evil you can choose from that will determine your path in the game.
As a martial arts rpg experience with ghosts, demons and such you should definitely at least give it a try.
It's a Bioware Game. I'm hella biased. It's good though, so have fun.
KOTOR but ancient Chinese threesome

I was always interested in this ever since back when it was an Xbox exclusive. I love the story and the open world RPG elements to it. The branching storylines, the characters, all chefs kiss. The actual fighting gameplay however, is dull and repetitive. I found myself getting through those areas as fast as possible just to get to the next part of the game. All that said, I overall did enjoy my journey through the game. It merits a proper remake with a complete replacement for the fighting gameplay.
Played it after disappointment in DA:Veilguard. It was the only BioWare game I haven't played yet. And it is good. It is okay so far. And comparing to the last two DA games it is masterpiece. I've fully completed Jade Empire and I'm satisfied, even though I don't like Japanese setting.
What I really enjoyed:
- characters are different and interesting.
- quests can be completed in different ways and some side quests are really good and funny.
- choices matter and they have an impact on your story(a necessary thing for any good RPG game but nowadays often forgotten by most of developers).
What I disliked:
- battle system left mixed feelings. There are many different martial styles to test, but from the other side after some time it just gets boring. Also target locking system sucks here. Boss battles are boring and offer nothing new comparing to regular fights. And, finally, my personal pain in the ass, - ghosts. The most annoying enemies in the game. They are immune to any weapon damage and defeating them with usual martial arts makes that fights even more boring and prolongated. Maybe there is another way of taking them down faster but personally I didn't find it. And why the heck they respawn in several places? Why defeating them again rewards just tiny amount of EXP? Very bad decision.
- Steam version still doesn't have a proper launch and framerate fix. So you have to download it yourself. After so many years they still didn't fix their game, yes...
Overall, I enjoyed this game and recommend it. It is really good traditional RPG. And I miss the "Old" BioWare. They really knew how to make some sood games in the past.

jade Empire is the kind of game i want from Bioware.
Interesting companions with own characters some going into the the main story.
Main story is full of charm and very adult subjects for the most part.
a minus point for me is the short playtime after 25 hours the credits where rolling , it is the shortest game of Bioware i think but not the worst.
even after all this years this Asia setting can facinate me with its excotic characters and landscapes.i would love a second game but not from Biowware in thier current state.

Click the Guides tab on the game page to learn how to make the game function, its basically running the game in windows vista sp2 compatibility mode and copying and pasting some files. It is a shame it doesn't just work but this classic gem is worth the minor hassle.
Underrated, "hidden" gem. The game is great, the combat is nice but some styles are better than others for sure (Longswords are basically the strongest weapon style), but it's such a nice way to pass time. The story is good, the setting is interesting, the music is beautiful. Really recommend it.
Classic Martial-arts game.
Historically accurate simulator of Chinese history where all combat is settled by martial arts and transforming into giant frog demons and throwing fireballs and icicle spears.
(also you'll have to go through a lot of faff to get this game working as opposed to being able to just install and play but all kidding aside it's worth it this is PEAK Bioware)
Bioware 2024 has become toxic, they don't deserve consumer support.
I absolutely love this game, and dearly hope it seems a modern remake (it's probably too archaic in design for a remaster) some day. But this version is barely playable, and requires pretty extensive modding to function as intended. The modding tools are just as ancient as the game is, so getting it all to work properly can be a real test of patience.
I can't recommend it in its current state, and highly doubt they'll ever fix it. If its sold on GOG, I might check it out there instead.
Jade Empire showcases early Bioware at its absolute best. The immersive world, clever and impactful story and memorable characters are why it's one of my favourite RPGs. The two paths your character can take makes replayability enjoyable as well.
EA sucks they should al be lined up and shot
It's pretty shocking that this game is being sold on Steam. I've spent hours trying to get it to work, since I loved the original and never got to finish it. Steam doesn't take any responsibility for fixing this game, so you're on your own or get a refund. Once every year or so, I spend another afternoon trawling the web trying to look for fixes, but probably I'll just refund it eventually.
10/10 game, been playing it ever since it released on the OG Xbox back in the day, BUT there are a few hoops you gotta go through. First you need to copy the steam.dll file from your steam install into the game or it will not launch at all. Second you need to rename the launcher as JadeEmpireLauncherBackup and the exe file as JadeEmpireLauncher. then you are good to go. graphics are a bit dated now but plenty of Nexus mods to smooth out the jagged textures and make the cutscenes prettier.

Kung fu RPG that definitely feels it's age. I had technical issues and had to look online to get the game to run without crashing. What I saw was very charming but I didn't stick with it because I just have better games to play. Its not bad, and the idea is good enough that I would be interested in a Jade Empire 2 or a reboot or some similar class based magical kung fu RPG system, but I won't hold my breath

I havent played this game in years and i got me a new computer which is more powerful than my other one. I just installed the game and when I press play a message pops up and says "can't find steam". What the hell im mad and its not cool for this to happen.
You have to go through so many hoops to just be able to start the game, and then trying to get 144hz or even just your controller to work correctly is such a hassle
This game is legit broken and requires jumping through some hoops to get running on modern operating systems and hardware. I feel like a broken record saying this, but, just buy the GOG version if you're interested. I'm still amazed Valve is allowed to sell games on the Steam store that are completely broken when you click play. With that said, you could argue Jade Empire occupies a spot near the bottom of Bioware's catalogue. Mashy, uninspired combat and a bland story. It's not offensively bad, but it's not great. A 6 or 7 out of 10 if you're being generous. The contemporaneous reviews are overly glowing because it has not aged particularly well. Play it if you're a hardcore Bioware fan or just love variety. The setting is the strongest part of the game.

There are multiple issues with this game. I have spent hours trying to get the controls to work correctly with no luck.
This was all after spending an hour just figuring out how to even get the game to launch. I shouldn't have to get into the games configuration and rewrite code for the game to work correctly. I loved this game on xbox when it came out but this is a rip off. These developers need to be held accountable for collecting money for defective products.
Amazing game. Some of the best characters, choices, and sidequests in Bioware RPG history. There is trouble getting the game to play and no achievements however.
