Yes its old, can you tab out... no, is the learning curve awful.... yes, does the computer cheat, well, yes. despite all those things its still a lot of fun and I can strongly recommend this game to retro gamers and anyone else looking for a cheap thrill.
An amazing classic.
Man...the memories I have of playing this game as a kid...
Great strategic retro 90's game. Helps to have the plots on but you should read the manual before you do. Build your army ASAP and make getting blessed a 3rd priority after building your happiness. try to build a large castle on your gold territory in between you other 3 main resources. 2nd priority should be food, then iron, and last being timber as it is the least used resource.
Classic game. Borders on an Idle game, but requires constant monitoring to avoid downtime.
Very challenging, could never beat it in my childhood - still haven't quite figured it out.
Right-clicking double-times the game, important.
General strategy notes:
Always use all workers.
Knights can be built at 6 army workers.
Castles at 100 strength supress rebellions in adjacent territories.
Certain actions (attacking, diplomats) have a cost, careful that you can afford your various upkeeps.
If you stuff all your troops into a tight mob, they tend to be more effective than fancy formations.
Terrain matters.
If you played the original, it's a fun trip down nostalgia lane, but newcomers will be disappointed at this early format that subsequent decades built on top of and improved
I bought it for nostalgia porposes, i remember playing it as a kid
Although basic compared to modern games it was still very fun and challenging to play years later.
There are some issues with this game such as sped up music and some blank messages but nothing that breaks the game. Still very playable and enjoyable.
An MSDOS classic and a part of my childhood. It's great to be able to play it again. As a kid I always encountered the copy protection that led to a game over, but today that shouldn't be a problem. Since I haven't played it in decades I'll have to do the tutorials first. I'm a big fan of realtime strategies.
Slightly different version then the original, the subplots are different and have an animated animation not sure how I feel about that but the trade off of having premade castles ready to go is worth it in that respect. The difficulty level also seems to be different but other then that it is the Original Late Great Castles 2. Probably the greatest game of my childhood rivaling the original Zelda. If you've never played it still holds up 30 years later, well worth the small investment.
A blast from the past. You will probably only like this game if you played it in the late 1990s / early 2000s.
One of my favorite games when I was younger... along with its predecessor the original Castle's Game. Though I forgot just how fast paced it was. You have to build up fast, or you will get conquered fast, because the AI in this builds itself up very fast. If you don't, you'll quickly find yourself excommunicated from the Church and your Happiness level dropping fast.
To this day I feel the more modern and more advanced castle building games like the Stronghold seriers for example, just can't compare to this . Because this Game, and its predecessor both have just enough randomness to keep them challenging and interesting. I can't help but wonder what a Castles III game could have been like if this series had continued.
It took me a few minutes to remember how to do everything... a few, precious minutes... that the AI used to stomp me in its gathering and army building. By the time I remembered how to do everything... the AI already had me surrounded and vastly out numbered me.
All that said, this IS a Steam Port of an old early 90's game. Its 30 years old; originally marketed as an MS-DOS game, ported from a Pre-Microsoft Windows Era (Windows is not even mention in its original "specs" as a "supported platform") to work on modern Windows based PC's. So its not without a few bugs... but its still fun and enjoyable for the sake of Nostalgia, just be prepared for its ridiculously fast pace!
This is an old game, but one of my favorites from when I was a kid. It preceeded age of empires, and has much simpler gameplay, but it led to this type of strategy game.
This is an old school classic. Yes, the combat is clunky AF. This is pre-dune II grand rts, and in dune II you couldn't select multiple dudes either. I have this for old ass mac as well, and its definitely a more graphically enjoyable game than the DOS version, but if this is all you can play it on, I'd still recommend it. Take the fight to the rest of France, then even take down the pope himself!
pure nostalgia
the gameplay is as shallow as a puddle but it is just like i remember it from the 90s
Nostalgia? wonderful.
Quality? questionable. So many in-game messages were blank. It ruins the flavour.
Nostalgia? still wonderful.
Price? ridiculous. This game is almost 30 years old. *If* the steam version worked perfectly, maybe half of what I paid would be appropriate.
Nostalgia? I am about to play it again.
So, if you want to pay for something you already owned many many many years ago, it is fun to revisit. If not, don't be insulted by paying for an ancient game that does not work properly on steam.
As a huge fan of the original disk based game I'm rather disappointed in this port for steam. Some highlights. Yes the game is functional, but the music will randomly speed up and stay there turning the once pleasant soundtrack into a nails on the chalkboard type sound. When you attack a player that's blessed by the pope it doesn't let you know that he's angered by it. I'm sure it does the same with the other players but I smashed them all so quickly it didn't even matter. The following are probably just flaws with the CD version of the game and not the port itself. You have to wait and listen to hear how much gold the diplomat is requesting instead of seeing it on the screen. This wastes time and doesn't add any enjoyment to the game. In fact all of the not being able to read the dialog and being forced to listen to it wasn't fun. I think the next time I want to play Castles 2 I'll just do it on my old DOS machine. I don't think this port is worth the $10 unless you don't have a machine capable of playing the original version.
I love this game. Probably more for nostalgia than anything else. So for those ten or so other people that played this in the 90s and loved it then, it is a must buy. If you are interested in general in classic old-school overly simple games, you may like it too. For the 99.9% of the rest of you, you probably would not like this game. Still for those fortunate few of us that would enjoy it, this game is and was amazing.
Fun game that brings back a lot of great memories! However, right now the game is broken. Whenever I try to "design" a castle, the screen goes black and it locks up. I can't find anything about how to fix this, so I guess I'm out of luck :-(
The only reason I don't recommend this game is for this reason.
EDIT: Discovered how to get around the crash. Save a castle or make your own and then load them all out from the saves. Haven't had a crash since! Changing my recommendation.
An old favorite. I don't think it has all of the soundtrack of the original, but it works fairly well. This is a good little strategy game and rewards patience and diligence. Tips. Right mouse speeds up progress bars. Castles worth over 100 points stop revolts in their own and neighboring territories. Don't think because you've got excellent diplomatic relations your neighbors won't stab you in the back. At a certain point, expansion is the only win condition and if your army is weak, they're going to come after you.
Far inferior to castles one. The additional features (regions and intruige) just have you staring at a screen, waiting for progress bars.
This is the first video game I can remember playing as a young kid, it was great to take a trip down nostalgia lane. Castles 2 is a game where you must balance resource accumulation, military advancement, build castles to prevent peasant revolts, please the pope with indulgences, and increase your stake for the title of King of France. I enjoy this game because I grew up with it, Castles 2 is older and does not have a tutorial to take your hand and explain the game, however after a few play throughs the game mechanics and strategy is easy. I do want to warn people that my opinion of this game is biased largely by nostalgia. I do think for its time it is an excellent strategy game but compared to contemporary games in its genre is simplistic and lacks intricacies that strategy game buffs come to expect for exciting gameplay. I recommend this game, but if you are on the fence about it, I would wait for the price to come down, I argue that 10$ for this game is too high. Also hold down the right mouse button to speed up gameplay.
