I am use to the game mechanics, as I have played Napoleon in Russia as well. The game is not very historical as time frame of day 1 is off. The XI corps has no chance to move north of Gettysburg prior to the confederate arrival. With that said it is clearly done for play balance. Night time should have some mechanic for unit regroup and recovery. The game is relatively easy to learn, quick paced and fun. It is hard to master.
MOVEMENT STRATEGY
In conclusion,
Civil War Gettysburg is a simple rendition of a war game. It is too simple, the AI too poor, and the visual quality too mediocre. The tutorial explains the rules, but the charts are poorly integrated into the game. Civil War needs significant AI improvements and a user interface upgrade to be worthwhile. I wouldn't recommend it for the multiplayer experience (where at least you wouldn't have to play against the AI). I appreciate the developer is trying to make a war game/miniature game, but this isn't worth the player's time.
Civil War Gettysburg: Utter Defeat
After 18 minutes doing unnecessarily tedious tutorials, I was too bored to play the game. All the tutorial info could have been done with quick videos a la Ultimate General: Gettysburg -- at least as an alternative. They do have quick slides that show the how to play info though which I wish I had used instead of the tutorial. Was looking for a classic hex and counter game and this is disappointing. Just from what is covered in the tutorial it is obvious there is nothing interesting put into the game. Apparently not play-tested. And poorly designed. I am always amazed at the games that publishers release with so many flaws. It's like a complete lack of awareness of what makes a good game.
I was able to try to play the actual game and lasted for only a minute, almost all of that time supposedly the enemy turn. Why such a simple game would take a minute for a turn IDK. It was never clear when it was my turn and I could not do anything. UI is simply awful.
If you have ever played CWG2 this game will be a complete disappointment. Due to lack of abandonware success I purchased this game to satisfy the craving, needless to say it did not.
its ok. has potential to be a great game but mising alot of features found in similar games.
Reminds me a bit of when I played Sid Meier's Gettysburg as a child -- simple, straightforward, and fun.
There are too few Civil War games on the market, and this game has a simple charm to it. I bought it thinking the graphics were entirely 2D, so I was pleasantly surprised to see the 3D animations. The gameplay itself is quite straightforward. You can change unit formations between a marching column and a firing line, and have the option between ranged and melee attacks. The combat is very similar to the Civilization series, with hexagonal movement. You don't get to choose your army; rather, reinforcements filter onto the map as the battle progresses. You have officer units which can be either independent or embedded into a regular unit. Overall, the combat is quite fun.
I see myself playing this game and getting a good number of hours of enjoyment out of it for the money. If you love Civil War history, and can't find many games of this era, then I recommend it.
ONLY HAD 1 GO BUT ITS NICE AND SIMPLE A GOOD GAME TO STARTER GAME IF YOU WERE SEEING IF YPU LIKED TURN BASE GAMES , OR TABLE-TOP WARGAMING
easy to learn how to play, fun playing
To be honest, I dont think the game is historically accurate. But it nonetheless embodies the essence of HEX warfare. There is no provision for embedding artillery with Cavalry, which puzzles me. And the way cavalry works in this game seems somewhat off. But i have largely enjoyed this game.
Covers the Gettysburg campaign of the American Civil War. Gameplay is as most HexWars games. Decent array of scenarios. If you are comfortable with HexWars style, recommended.
Room for strategic thinking and planning.
This game is not good. It's interface is bubble gum (not detailed not accurate). The battle mechanics are kind of atrocious, it doesn't matter what unit fires on which, or what the veteran levels are, you will do "one damage" (2 exceptions/rare), Also, the game doesn't tell you, IN ANY WAY, where the combat is taking place, you literally have to guess which unit is taking it's turn (enemy turn) by following the sound of gunfire, THAT'S CRAP, because it forces you to memorize troops strength from before and after. The AI (coding) is incapable of understanding "surprise" (ambush) "charge" (speed impact) nor "experience" (increased AI boost/skill for veterans) mechanics. In closing. There is one, and only one good thing about this game, it teaches you (if you've never EVER played a turn style combat before) strategic positioning and troop rotational skills (though that is not fun in any way).
As civil war games go, this is BAD. As turn style sims go, this is BAD, as bubble gum games go (fun vrs stressful), it STILL FAILS.
I got this game on sale and it still wasn't worth it.
I ALMOST FORGOT THE WORST PART OF THIS GAME. THE MUSIC. There is only one song and it plays on a perpetual loop regardless of what's going on in the game, moving? same song, fighting? same song, attacking/defending? SAME SONG. HATING THE SAME SONG? "SAAAMEEE SOOOONG"!
It spammed me, I turned off the music and was left with clicking noises and the odd pot shot noise generator.
If you're looking for a nice simple playing experience in an old school wargame format then this is pretty good. Very reminiscent of old tabletop wargames like Volley and Bayonet and 80s/90s hex computer wargames. Graphics are nice and simple but the terrain could have done with a bit more clarity. Quite a decent AI from what I've seen so far and for less than a tenner it's well worth a go.
A solid game for the price. A few problems though. It would nice if the game would follow the action during the AI turn. It is too easy to miss the action while trying to scroll. The Day One scenario seems to be unhistorical in turns of Union arrivals. But otherwise a fun game with some really nice features.
GREAT GAME, LOVE IT, WOULD LIKE TO HAVE HAD THE UNITS MOVE A LITTLE FURTHER THAN ONE SPACE AT A TIME FOR SOME UNITS(LONG TIME TO GET TO SOME SPOTS) AND DLC IS ALWAYS GOOD THING TO, BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS, STILL FUN TO PLAY.
First off I have played table top civil war games that were alot more fun to play than this. The map is not to scale to the units as well as the area that the battle took place was not right. The Morning battle with the Union Cavalry did not take place near a Bridge or a river I know because Ive been to the battle field twice and played many games of Gettysburg. but that aside the game just was not at all fun to play.there are alot of Civil War GAmes that are more engaging than this.Sorry but thats my opinion.Never asked for a refude before but this is the first and hopefully the last.Game just rates a 1 out of ten.
This game is good. I suggest you give it a try. Recreates entire Gettysburg battle and even small parts of it. Table top yogoigo type game. Enjoyable - like 'just one more turn' - is the feeling. ****
