This game does a lot of things but nothing well. I finished the game and feel like I only wasted my time with it.
I wanted to enjoy this game for its Twin Peaks-style quirkiness, but instead I was treated to the most boring 30min of intro gameplay since the time I played Golden Nugget on PS1 as a child. The gameplay appears to be built around fetch quests with nothing fun during or inbetween. Clickspamming is what you end up doing to find who you need to talk to next and while the environments and the character design are interesting, that's about it. It isn't necessarily the clunky translation of from Spanish to English that makes the script less enjoyable. Rather, it's the jokes themselves that aren't very funny. Perhaps it's a difference in culture, but if someone asked me for a comedy-centric game to play, I'd point them to Jazzpunk instead.
To be frank, this game is more a walking simulator than anything else. The puzzles are trivial at best and annoying at worst, the controls and movement has the horrible on-ice-feeling and the writing is quite possibly the worst I've ever witnessed in a game.
You might be like me, see this game on sale for under a Euro and think "huh, might be some cool weird point&click game that is too niche to be widely appraised, let's try it" - don't.
Nothing in this game sans the unique and sometimes even charming graphic style and music is worth spending your money and time on. The texts read like a 6 year olds writing, truly nothing makes any sense (and not in a charming, mysterious way), the "gameplay" is worse than a 90s flash game. The only somewhat redeeming thing is that is uniquely weird, but even that is neither very creative nor interesting in any way.
tl;dr: The game doesn't instill nostalgia, the gameplay is tedious at best and forgettable most of the time, the writing is abysmal and could've been done by a 6 year old and you wouldn't notice a change. Baffling how a guy could draw all the art for it and go through the trouble of recreating that VHS tape atmosphere just to publish this... nongame.
I paid a HEFTY amount of $8.08 for two episodes and expected AT LEAST 100 hours of gameplay. Didn't get that, but the MASSIVE loss of funds was still worth it since this is one of the more unique and interesting games out there. I was surprised to learn this wasn't a game by Adult Swim.
I would recommend this game because the price is just about right.
I think this game tried its best to look real bizarre that it can become somewhat selling point.
The overall atmosphere is really weird and even made me feel headache all the time while playing it.
It's like you're having one of fever dreams
The gameplay is not that great but not bad either. The last part of the game is really confusing that I had to look up the guide. Also, some level designs are somewhat boring and irritating with too many needless obstacles and ridiculous objectives but I give the devs praise that they make the game interesting by adopting different genre to each chapter. For example, the game changes into 3-d game format for a while and sometimes shooting game. It was memorable endeavor for the game with price range under $5
But overall, the whole game is mediocre. it's too easy and can be finished in 2hrs.
The story is unfinished and there's a sequel to this too. So buy this game if you are really into weird stuff.
IMPORTANT: Currently there is a part in the game where a password is needed. The character mentions that maybe it is on a website related to the game. However, it seems that the developer let the domain expire and now if you click on the steam "visit the cite" it will direct you to a very sketchy web page where it is implied you now have a virus. This is documented in the discussion section. I liked the game up until this point but this is a serious problem. So for now I feel obligated to give a thumbs down. Fix this!
Where do I start...
I get the feeling that the creators didn't really know what they wanted this game to be, so they made it a little bit of everything; an adventure game, a puzzle game, an RPG and an FPS. This may just be my personal opinion, but I think the game would have been a lot more powerful if they chose one style and stuck by it, perfecting the mechanics of one style instead of being too ambitious.
The graphics are inconsistent as well, not just between each game style but also within the cutscenes. It's confusing when some environments are beautifully detailed with great shading, when others look like they were quickly thrown together and lack depth.
The game runs quite smoothly but I couldn't be more frustrated than when I tried to play the first-person part and couldn't beat it just because the controls were not responsive enough. In this case, you would think "then why don't you use a controller to make that part easier?". Oh I tried. From the very beginning I tried playing with an Xbox one controller (bear in mind that the developers claim this has full controller support) and I couldn't even start the game because the controls didn't work at all, and therefore had to resort to using my keyboard.
The music is pretty cool but it's (again) incohesive and there doesn't seem to be a general feeling that the music is trying to convey (for example, the main menu song is cheerful with bells and a bright melody, whereas the main theme in the opening cutscene is very dark with almost a horror theme). Usually, music can be used as a tool to strengthen the atmosphere in the game but here it falls short, as the music choices are as confusing as the game.
Finally, my opinion is that a great game doesn't necessarily need to have any plot at all, as long as it can immerse you in other ways, like innovative puzzles or clever character development. However this game does try to communicate some kind of plot, but even that seems half done since there's no reason as to why the playable character is a cop and it doesn't have anything to do with the actual gameplay.
I think I can sum up my experience of this game in this question: "What were you trying to achieve?". In every aspect (mechanic, graphics, music, plot, etc.) I feel like there was no clear decision made to go in any one direction with the design choices. Instead, we're presented with a big mix, and it seems like the developers were hoping that there will be something in this game for everyone. I think this might be the main flaw, because I can tell that there are some cool creative ideas in there (has anyone else made their main character an eggplant cop? I don't think so). Targeting a very niche part of the market could help give more depth to the game as a whole and might help convince others who didn't initially like e.g. horror/halloween or comedy games.
TLDR; The game had a lot of potential but is confusing and doesn't seem to know what it wants to be.
I enjoyed this game, even if it isn't really a stellar example of its genre. The aesthetic is lovely, spooky yet charming, and the soundtrack works really well with the graphics.
However, it definitely looks like the person who wrote the dialogue is not a native English speaker. There's nothing wrong with not having perfect spelling, grammar, and punctuation in your general typing, but when producing a game it's a great idea to have a professional editor or at least a native English speaking friend to look over your dialogue before release. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what the dialogue meant and fixing the errors in my head, which really spoiled my immersion.
While the puzzles could be said to be a little on the simple side, sometimes that's exactly what you want from a game. I know I love to spend hours scratching my head over puzzles, but sometimes what I want is something that I can just blast through with puzzles that are fun and not ridiculously hard. Really the only part I particularly disliked was the first-person section, but fortunately it was over relatively quickly so it didn't ruin the game for me and having the style of the game change from top-down, to side-scroll, to first-person was a fun little addition. Perhaps allowing players to change the control mapping would have helped as well since I was trying to jump with ctrl and move with w/up arrow, which just... wasn't really the best layout.
If you're a fan of RPG puzzle games with a touch of weirdness then this is definitely worth a look. At $2.99 it doesn't break the bank and if you end up not enjoying it you haven't dropped $60+ on a shit game like with AAA titles.
However, I will likely wait for the second episode to go on sale before I play it...
This is a fun, retro style RPG...
but the reason I can't recommend it is the fact that there are various glitches (can't play the game in windowed mode on Mac because of glitches, requiring a restart) and various things you need to solve the game (a code on the dev's site) are no longer available and must be found on the forum.
If you like retro style games and Twin Peaks/David Lynch, this game is supposedly for you. However, note that although the game consists of 10 acts, the acts vary in length from taking 30m+ to taking literally under a minute.
What was disappointing was that this game ended up feeling a lot like a demo reel. Some acts have unique mechanics in the context of the game. There's a Zelda type level, a 3D first person type of level, etc., but those were the only two that stood out to me.
Various Easter eggs were never implemented and are now red herrings. Some achievement conditions are unclear: e.g. what does "Complete the dungeon in time" even mean? And apparently, the "talk to everyone in the game" achievement is bugged or broken.
There's a VHS overlay that's well done, and toggleable, which I appreciate, but, various VHS effects weren't disabled even when VHS mode was turned off: namely, in terms of how text was displayed (in a faux VHS fashion in both VHS and non VHS mode). The text ended up looking really blurry and was hard for me to read.
The start of the game definitely felt more put together than the end of the game.
The oddball adventure game starring a humanoid eggplant who has to overcome bizarre obstacles in order to make his way through the mystical town of Flamingo's Creek. The game world is imaginary to the point that I can barely see what's coming up next. There are bits of action RPG, first-person adventure and puzzle solving to keep things fresh along the way. There are even cultural references and a theme track that sounds inspired from early Soviet comedy films. I get a bit nostalgic turning on the 80's VHS mode in the graphics settings.
As fun as the featured contents have been thrown together, the pacing and gaming dynamics get compromised by clunky interface and single dialogues from same NPC's. With all things said, though, I'm looking forward to experience further whimsicalities of the story going on in Flamingo's Creek in the 2nd episode.
I love a lot of things about the game. I love the way it switches between 2D and 3D. It's clever and visually interesting.
However, the innovative concepts and don't excuse the clunky gameplay. The simple task of grabbing a shovel took me 20 minutes and countless deaths because of shoddy game design. I think there is some really good stuff here, I just wish they would put more effort into finessing and polishing the game mechanics.
This game is not good. I like wierd retro games and even I was turned off by this game. It's just random for no particular reason. The story is terrible. The graphics are bad. I like cute retro 2d games, but this is not good. Controls are wonky. Puzzles are stupid. The one puzzel were you literally have to close the game and got on the internet to find the stupid code is just pointless. I will probably finish it, but man it's painful.
Usually weird games are fun and interesting, but this one's neither.
Under the surface-level dadaism of Baobabs Etc is frustrating, boring, and uninspired gameplay that you've already seen done better elsewhere. None of what you're doing is particularly interesting and the story and dialogue is so lulrandom that there's no reason to get invested.
Horribly sloppy controls, tons of typos, and poorly tiled environments also help contribute to a persistent feeling that this game is just unfinished. The game requires a code to progress at one point as a copy protection joke, but the website that is supposed to contain the code has expired, which I feel says a lot on its own.
At least the game is short enough that you can easily refund it. It's a bit over an hour long if you have the patience to make it to the end.
Just applied for a refund. I love weird games with unconventional stories, aesthetics, and gameplay, so naturally, I was quite drawn to this game. But there is a line between strange and interesting, and just "lolrandom". Like, in the first minutes, all these characters are introduced and people are using all this jargon that might make sense later but at the moment renders any dialogue incomprehensible, and next thing I know I'm putting "Mr. Nutz" into a catapult to kill an inexplicable werewolf man so I can get into the secret bar toilet passage where the tentacle and one eyed deer live. And no explanation for any of this has been given. It's one thing for a game to clearly be meant for atmosphere and context doesn't matter (like, say, Hylics), but having "Acts" and clearly named characters with implied backstory and just saying "to hell with it" immediately leaves something to be desired. And goddamn if I can't make that first set of jumps in 3D (yes, there's 3D platfroming. And it's clunky as hell.), which wouldn't be too bad if it let me try again without staring at a picture for 30 seconds and then being whisked away to the beginning. There aren't even any obstacles before then, so what's the purpose of sending me back!?
Basically, I guess I just didn't have the patience to put up with the awkwardness (of the controls and the translation) or the pitiful attempts at being "unique" or "hip" or whatever the mood is supposed to be.
I picked up this game because it looked interesting. I've played point and clicks before, and while they're not my favorite game, I generally enjoy them.
This game feels like someone who's never played a point and click coded it, then refused to fix any of the faults. I'm not talking about the gameplay, which seems to use the standard moon logic. I'm talking about the actual mechanics.
So, with a point and click, generally you have to talk to people a lot, and interact everything with everything. Point and clicks allow quick skipping of dialogue you've heard before, and running to allow your character to move faster. This game has neither. Not only does dialogue just repeat the same 6 lines, it takes about 3-4 seconds to move past each line. Your character only goes at a casual walking pace too, so trying to figure out what the game wants me to do takes even longer. When you're trying to figure out what to do, this quickly becomes frustrating, since the vast majority of the game ends up holding down buttons and waiting for your character to meander across the screen, just so you can see whether or not you figured out the puzzle. Nope? Well, time to meander across the screen again. I don't know what my gameplay length is, but the actual game is about 10% of that; 90% was spent walking or re-reading unskippable dialogue when trying to figure out how to pass the next moon logic test. It's such a simple fix too, and the dev either refuses to acknowledge error, or does not care, so I'll never know if there's an interesting game behind the obsfucation either.
It's a fun game with some nice art and a quirky atmosphere. The gameplay is flawed in many ways. The puzzles are mostly either extremely easy and obvious or obnoxiously punishing – forcing you to restart a whole section or level, just because of some poor collision detection or badly designed gameplay issue. It's fun and short enough to keep you going...just. But it feels like a game that was never tested effectively before being released. There's plenty of bad grammar/typos in the game and bugs too.
By the way, if you come up against some 'anticheat' system, the code is 1 6 0 2 1 7. This makes no sense to me at all. The game asks for a code during one of the acts and I had to trawl the web for it, finding it in a walkthrough. I don't understand the purpose of this or many of the other nonsensical elements of this game but I'm sticking with it for now because it's funny and enjoyable in other ways. I got the game in a sale for a small amount of money so I don't mind the quirks and it's good to support indie developers but I would probably not be super happy if I'd paid full price due to the bugs.
Such a beautiful game.
kind of a walking sim for the first half but it's very enjoyable to play and becomes a bit more skill based as it goes.
Seems like the brainchild of a beautifully artistic mind and as such mechanics are not as sound.
I'm looking forward to the next chapter.
Woof, let's start with the good stuff. The art direction and sound design are great. And that's about it. The puzzles, if you can even call them that, are repetitive and far to easy. Find a key to open a door to a room where there is a key to another room. Repeat. At $5.99 this game is overpriced.
This is the kind of inventiveness I love seeing. Every step of the way is a weird, fun adventure.
Despite a couple design hiccups, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great music! And some standout cinematic moments!
It fits well in the burgeoning Avante-garde JRPG genre with games like LISA the Painful RPG, Undertale, and Oneshot.
Baobabs Mausoleum is an eclectic game, pure craziness that keeps changing its gameplay. The plot is the thing that links the whole thing and it's as weird as it is charming.
The world has a "Gravity Falls" vibe that I ended up diggin a lot.
If you like the looks of it and its narrative premise go ahead and get it. It's a cool amount of fun for its price.
