Dreamstones is a competent brick breaker game and probably my favorite game from Windybeard I have played so far. The game has over 200 levels with a decent amount of variety in level design.

The game feels good to play because you have a lot of control over the ball with your paddle. You also get to customize your active and passive skills. Throughout my playthrough I changed my loadout frequently because as the difficulty increases you will need to adapt to the new challenges.

Some minor issues:
The game gets grindy towards the end if you are a completionist.
It can be hard to distinguish background and foreground and the only solution the game has is to make the background grey.
The passives for critchance don’t work.
In some of the levels the ball can get stuck forever, even if it unstucks itself after a couple of minutes the ball will be so fast it is uncontrollable.
You can’t rebind the controls.

I love this game. By "love", I mean, it forced its way into my brain through a nostril and lodged itself firmly behind my eyes and wouldn't let me go until I'd completed it. At its core, it's breakout / arkanoid, with arcade elements, powerups (so many powerups), choices.. all the choices.. collectables, powerups and loadouts, weapon configs (yes, weapons to attack all the monsters.. yes there's monsters, yes this is still breakout) - it's got a lot of stuff going on. It starts off a little "..wait, why are there monsters?" and quickly becomes "I _really_ gotta kill these things or I won't sleep." As you progress the levels, you get more xp, you get cash, you get Dreamstones, you get STORY - there's a mental story going on that's full of interesting characters - you get powerups, you get to make choices of loadouts with your powerups to try and beat levels - there are BOSS battles that can be challenging... yeah. Love it. Really great gaming experience. If you have a spare £10, it's definitely worth it. If you've ever loved breakout / arkanoid, then you should definitely give this a try.

Steam is a place full of Games. Of course! it is a gaming Plattform, i know, i know.
But sometimes it is not easy to find a way through the masses of Games and we all know there are many bad fastly done games, just for the Money.
And that is something that makes me sometimes sad, because there are Developer, who have their heart on the right (Gaming) side. People with passion for Games, making wonderfull Games FROM Players FOR Players.
One of these Developers is WINDYBEARD.

Mr. Windybeard has the rare Talent to make nearly every Game on a simple way, but addictive to the player.
Creating his own Graphic Style, what you can see on every game he created, he made his own charm on his Games.
Starting once with a very nice Shooter called SWEEZY GUNNER, a wonderfull crossover of a Shooter with a lightly open World in Space with many Extras to set free, he then created GEO one hell of a very addictive Mix of Action and Economy Simulation. The next step was DREAMSTONES.

Once i was young i remember playing Games like ARKANOID, IMPACT or BREAKOUT. Oh, i hated that games, because i was not so good at steering a paddle to let a ball explode many Blocks. Just 3 Lifes and fastly the Game was over.
Well, well, well.
So i was looking at DREAMSTONES and thought: Oh no, Mr. Windybeard did an ARKANOID Clone.
But then i looked back at SWEEZY GUNNER and GEO and just remembered how many hours of fun i have had with his Games. So i decided to give that game a chance.
And i didn`t regret it.

Starting with the Game i fastly found out that this game is a Challenge ... but fair.
Mr. Windybeard created a nice World with a nice Story and added (like every game) a wonderfull Soundtrack.
The Kingdom of the Dreamweaver was attacked and it is up to you to restore their Kingdom.
While you and you paddle fight your way to the 5 Worlds, you free Dreamweavers, collect Money for getting Buildings and upgrades, fight Monsters and also Boss Monsters.
And the Game is fair. With the help of the upgrades you can set free and vary among each other, each level is to master.
Find your own perfect armored paddle and then give`em hell.

Again Mr. Windybeard took much content in a simple Game. Content for hours, garnished with fair Achievements.
Again i got addicted by his Game. Because of the music, because of the unique cartoon Style, because of the "Only one level more" thinking that made me forgetting time.

DREAMSTONE is a little pearl in the Sea of Games, like every Game from Windybeard.
It has so much nice details like Characters from his other Games, you know you play a Windybeard Game, when you play a Windybeard game. :-)
Like every Game of him, the Game has a fair price and i would pay more to support him.
Windybeard deserved more attention and i like to thank him for all of his Games and the Games to come.
I´m excited of GEO 2 (Is upcoming!) and still hoping for a SWEEZY GUNNER 2.
Developers like Windybeard are rare, they should be more supported and right now Windy beard is the only Developer for me, where i like EVERY Game, and i play Games for over 30 Years.
So if you like heartblood created Games FROM Gamer FOR Gamer, this one (and others from Windybeard) are for you.

Thanks for reading. :-)

I recommend Dreamstones on sale to fans of brickbuster games or someone looking for a unique mostly chill game. It is a unique cartoonish brick busting RPG with city builder elements and a lighthearted text narrative driven story, which I completed in ~20 hours. Here is what you need to know:
+Game is mostly chill with its vibe & music when you are not focused on the last stage of a level trying to get the last few required blocks (nightmare cubes)
+As a brick buster, over time there are lots of active and passive abilities that modify stats or cause certain things to happen. It seems the different types of powerup capsules have an equivalent active ability can be earned or unlocked.
+TONS of things to unlock. As you beat levels, you unlock new store items, new buildings for the city, and new abilities. When building, upgrading a building, or beating a boss, more levels unlock.
+Purchase prices of weapons & abilities seemed fair over time, especially when using gold earning passive abilities in the early game.
-Settings can only be accessed from the top level menu and cannot be accessed after clicking "Start Game" nor when clicking pause.
-Graphics settings are limited to windowed mode, and some odd choices of scaling options other than fit screen. Given that my display is 1080p by default, but the default video size goes beyond my monitor, its as if maybe the game is made for 1440p or something? This "fit screen" type option doesn't downscale resolution very cleanly.
-On certain stages at certain levels with tons of objects (1 out of 20 levels?) FPS dropped below 60. There were a handful of times during my entire playthrough a few frames were even skipped alltogether, like a stutter or something. My i5-3570K,GTX1060, and 24GB RAM should meet recommended spec.
+After the 2nd world, I was optimistic that I could 100% the game, but each world since then was a harder welcome challenge, especially with monsters in the different worlds. I beat the game at 85% complete according to in-game stats.
?Bounces were largely predictable, and came with a learning curve for sure (like figuring out which way a bounce of the sides of the paddle will go), but there were a handful of times during my playthough where a ball could get stuck in a circular bouncing loop between 3-5 unbreakable blocks. To resolve this either you have to use an active powerup that alters the path/bounce, rely on a monster to intervene, or restart the level.
?Level variety was just right with the first 3 worlds but the fourth world felt samey near the end, and the last world started feeling samey about half way through.

Nope. Dont buy it. You'll be disappointed and frustrated. Initially I thought this will be a cool break from more serious titles. Although I didn't like the graphics and the story was so boring I stopped reading the dialog windows - I liked the idea of progreesing thorugh leveling up your paddle and collecting items and new skills. And even though leveling up doesn't really change anything (you get slightly "stronger" and you earn a bit more coins) i was going to play it. Just to relax and get that feeling of accomplishing something while playing casual game. But when your game is based on bouncing the ball, YOU SHOULD AT LEAST CODE THE BOUNCING CORRECTLY! Not only the paddle is bugged (especially with rapid movement) and often when you should hit the ball, it gets under the paddle or is suddenly pushed perfectly horizontally which is unrecoverable, but also the bouncing is random! What, are we back in eighties? Who thought it's a great idea to add some randomness to the angle of the bounce? Breakout games should be about precision and accuracy, which is impossible when ball goes in unpredictable way. And yes, the paddle should bounce the ball in different angles, but NOT RANDOMLY! In the past, on 8-bit computers the randomness was required to prevent the situations when ball got stuck in the infinite bouncing loop between the paddle and the wall. Today you should have control over the ball's movement by hitting it with the different parts of the paddle, and the angle should depend on that position (ball should go straight up when hitting the middle of the paddle and go almost horizontall when hitting the edge) without any randomness added to that! This spoils any fun, as you're just moving the paddle with hope that this time the ball will go where you want it. It was very frustrating. Go buy Shatter, it's way way better!

Really love the new update. Lots more kick to the drops and it provides a lot more fun on each level. If you like beautiful unique art and enjoy jump in/out gameplay then you will enjoy this game.
It's a breakout style game, where you must use your paddle to bounce balls into particular special blocks. It also has a little town building mini game, and RPG ELEMENTS! Very unique take which adds depth and more fun to the game.

It's a game I jump in for a wee bit when I need to just destroy something. Lovely sound effects when you get a nice streak going.

Great work and I defo recommend checking out other windy games if you love the art style and unique take on game mechanics.

Great stuff.

I really do enjoy Windybeard games. I think the mechanids they add, freshen up your 'tried and true' genres. GEO was a lot of fun, but had its issues, but at the end of the day, was a great indy game.

Dreamstones is no different. It has a lot of value on a tried and true genre, with plenty of fun differences. I would've left this review a LONG time ago, if one simple change had been made. And that change came in the latest patch "No more death penalty for pausing"

I'm a person who watches movies/TV shows/audiobooks/talks on messengers. If a game has a pause feature, I'm going to use it while I do those other things. So when this game penalized me for needing to pause a few times throughout a match (If I was talking to someone and waiting for them to reply) and basically needed me to re-play that level to max my score (which is valuable in this type of game.) Then I refunded it, only to re-buy it later at a discount.

With that out of the way, now that the pause feature is fixed, I will happily say that this is an enjoyable take on the pong genre and a lot of fun. It was worth it to me at full price, but I was only upset about the very strange pausing ability. Now with that fixed, it's totally worth full price again with no need to buy it on sale. Totally worth the asking price.

After following the full development cycle of this breakout gem, I decided to pick up the gloves and play it through. The content itself is deeper than it would first appear, so I really encourage everyone to grind through and see the complete story unfold. Dreamstones really delivers where it should, retaining the classic breakout gameplay while literally building a world and continuity on top, ensuring that the content keeps a fresh feel on every gaming session.

Yes, the game does provide a major challenge at times, leading to an enraging frustration (that could lead to accute broken fingers due to the induced wall punching), but this is then again completely fair and ties in perfectly with the nature of the retro classic and in my personal opinion testifies of proper and well balanced game design, as the feeling of penalty is always a direct consequence of a player's action.

A proper sense of "fair defeat" is rare in modern day gaming and it is trully a brave move to march in against the stream of player-pampering. Indeed, it is presently commonstay for players to feel invincible, making it hard to accept they are being outsmarted by a game. In conclusion, I would thus like to congratulate WindyBeardGames for creating a captivating, audiovisual masterpiece with proper and responsive gameplay.

10 / 10 would recommend to play !

PROS: Nice looking environments to smash apart and interesting enemy designs. I also liked the rpg-ish feel of gaining new weapons and abilities.

CONS:
Each level having multiple stages which seems cool at first until you get stuck on one particular stage and have to replay them all over and over. (with balancing changes you're less likely to get stuck but there is still a chance for rage-quitting)

Plenty of different abilities to find but the active ones all share the same global cool-down making it almost pointless to try and strategize by mixing weaker, quick recasts with stronger spells with a huge cool-down.

EDIT: Since I first reviewed this game the dev has made some much needed changes to balancing. Some cons remain and I've left them above but overall the game feels much more fun to play. Some levels are still quite challenging but now it feels like it's more about your skill and quick reflexes and less about cheap game design. (The ball no longer goes right through the paddle when hitting it with the edge for example)

Changed my review to positive thanks to the changes. Good for those like like brick-breaking games with a challenge.

I wanted to love this game so much. I love those "block-breaker"(Breakout) games and I really like a lot all of the stuff around this game like citybuilding etc. even if its simplistic.
There is much more love in this game than in most of those breakout-clones out there but there are 3 problems and two of those kill the games for me.

1. The small problem is that its often frustrating to save your ball in last moment because ball is kind of glitching through your paddle.
2. That maybe is a reason for the bigger problem: the ball-speed. Its not challenging at all. Its so damn slow (maybe because it would lead to that glitch-thing more often). Its kind of hipnotical slow.
3. Levels are easy and kinda boring. There are some really nice ideas in some levels but through the slow playstyle it never feels really cool or like you achieved something after that.

Just to make it clear again: there are a lot of good things in this game but I was really bored most of playtime.
If you never played a "breaker-game" or usually dont play games or maybe you are searching something for your child, than maybe you still can have fun with that game. With some more speed or action inside the levels this game could be really cool.

Whimsical art, check.
Great soundtrack, check.
Block-breaking Arkanoid-type gameplay, hand-designed, not procedurally generated, check.
Powerups, lots!
XP, leveling up, better weapons and unlockables, yes, yes, yes, and yes.
Passionate developer that supports and loves his work, oh yeah.

This game is an example of what can be produced by love of the art.

I haven't had as much fun with a game in a long time. Highly recommended. Don't miss this one.

An gorgeous, funny and enjoyable Breakout-style, with RPG-elements, game that does an awful lot right and will keep you entertained for hours.

There's a genre mixing group of games out there that take enjoyable arcade games and combine them with the story and depth of role-playing games. It's a type of game I feel has yet to find it's genre-defining entry, and while Dreamstones isn't quite there, it's definitely a major step in the right direction.

Firstly as a Breakout game it is as good as any, though it suffers from the same faults I find with other Breakout-style games, for example getting stuck on the final block can be frustrating, as can being put in a situation where the ball is impossible to reach, though anyone who has played a Breakout-esque game will be aware of these issues, issues that are fortunately often fixed by some of the spells and power-ups.

Both active and passive spells are equipped to your weapon, which in-turn determines how much damage your ball does when it hits certain enemies. Active powers are useful, giving you a chance to destroy more blocks, from a simple dagger being fired up to a spell that splits the ball and more, these are great for hitting those last few blocks and completing a level and you can have up to six of them equipped, unfortunately they share a cool-down so while the dagger only takes twenty seconds to recharge, some abilities can leave you waiting over a minute before you can use another. I feel the game would be more enjoyable, though easier, if each skill had separate cooldowns.

Passive abilities can cause you to have an extra life, receive more gold or do more damage, these too are equipped to your weapon, which means you have to decide what effects you want equipped before you start. Unfortunately this means some abilities, like receive 10% more gold are ones I feel I won't use unless I have spare slots. I believe it would have helped towards the feeling of progression if these were permanent upgrades once you had unlocked them.

Outside of the block-breaking meat of the game there's somewhat of a story and even town-building, if any part of the game needs more depth it's this, the buildings are well drawn and add to a Kingdom Score but little more than that, there's citizens to save but saving them doesn't unlock anything other than helping you get slightly closer to 100%. The story, characters and dialogue are genuinely entertaining and only left me wanting more.

The art-style is gorgeous, the music awesome and everything about the game has character, though it can be hard to tell exactly what the ball will hit as the background and foreground blend seamlessly, even so it's a good looking game and there's easily more than enough content to keep you playing for several hours.

There are a lot of levels and new mechanics are introduced regularly enough to keep the game fresh and the monsters and bosses make for rather unique and, most importantly, fun experience.

All in all fun and worthwhile gameplay makes for a title that has a few minor issues and could do with a little more depth in places but overall and fun game that is well worth the price of admission, with many hours of varied content and as entertaining as any similar game.

If you're looking for a Breakout-style game with a unique twist then Dreamstones is a must.

Its just a bat and ball game right ? .... WRONG
All you have to do is clear the level of bricks right ? .... WRONG
Its not like its hard to complete a level right ? ..... WRONG

Hmmm your not making sense how can a bat and ball game be hard ?? its not like the bricks shoot back at you .... do they ?

Forget everything you think you know about bat and ball games, this game starts out like your typical bat and ball games but each level adds new mechanics until your playing a completely different game. each level you complete gives you a dreamstone which opens up more buildings for your world those buildings in turn open up new pathways in the 5 worlds you visit. even when you think you've finished a world a new building will open up a new pathway. even when you kill the world boss you will be going back to that area to find new items in treasure chest that you didnt see before.

This game also adds a power-up system giving you various strategies - do you give you weapon more damage to kill the monsters quicker or do you apply the money collector giving you extra money to spend in the shops.....

Weapons Monsters Coins ???? wtf this is a bat and ball game....... you still dont get it yet do you....

ITS NOT JUST A BAT AND BALL GAME

Just try it you wont regret it.

An interesting take on the classic breakout format, pushing a colouful world with a big progression system containing twists such as RPG-like elements and active abilities. The world itself has a relaxed feel, and doesn't take itself too seriously.

If you enjoy block-breaking, looking at pretty colours or progression in general, this is probably a good fit.

After 2 hours I can safely say I'll be coming back to this soon enough.

The detail is amazing, from each animation to the sound, the OST is there and you notice how good it is by its subtle nature.

It's not just another breakout clone, you have to think of where blocks are trapped, what each blocks characteristics are and be warey of those trapdoors and portals as they sneak up on you.

There is not much more to say that the price I paid is well worth a punt at a classic game re-vamped!

Breakout game, brought into the 21st century. Nice graphics, nice sounds, nice music, and above all, fun... fun like its the 1980s... Its painfully stressfull beyond belief, but this makes you want to play more and prove to yourself that you're not a failure like your uncle juan used to say.

The game will bring you hours of fun and you will get your monies worth (over 200 levels). And the story... the story is just heartbreaking, but I won't spoil it for you.

The game is filled with many customising assets/powerups, to allow you to play to you own style.

The most impressive thing is that this game is made by one person (which is hard to believe, with all the effort put into it). But you can tell how much love and blood has been put into it, and it pays off with this beauty of a game...

My advice is you will probably get more fun out of this game than you would out of a AAA game. And its easy to pick up and play at any time... so you can feed the kids without worrying...

oh crap... dinners burning... brb...

**Edited to add a bit more depth to this review**

This is an ok game. It's not something you'll find yourself playing for hours on end, engrossed in the game, but it's allright.

It has some nice art assets and I love the sound design and music. It gives you a very relaxed vibe. I like the forethought in how the teleporting doors operate. When two doors are placed in such a way that it could cause an infinite loop of the ball just teleporting between the two, the ball will instead exit at an angle, preventing this from happening. I also really like the concept of the game: building the town and rescuing its residents.

But then, I also have some issues with that mechanic. In every game I've played over all these years, when you upgrade a shop you get more things to purchase from that shop. Not here. Instead you get points added to your Kingdom Score. Get a high enough score and you'll get a chest that might have better gear in it, or something else to purchase in the shop. However, the first time I saved my money to upgrade the shop to get a better weapon to help clear the levels and saw that it didn't do anything, I had that "Oh. How disappointing" feeling. Not a big issue, just not what I expected naturally.

The biggest issue I have is how often the ball will hit inside the paddle instead of on its surface, and be deflected down instead of back up like it should. There are also levels where I'm getting 25fps or less. Neither of these things should be happening.

The "Cloud Bound" area is a good example of why I can only say it's an ok game. It's a 3 stage level. Things are fine for the first two levels but then fall apart on the third. This is where the low frame rate starts. I've also had the ball hit a fly without registering the hit, and had it stuck in an endless bounce between the top left tree and top left corner.

Then there's the center area. You end up with a U shape made of unbreakable blocks with 5 Nightmare Stones that you'll need to complete the level. What will happen when you try to get them is that the ball will bounce off one tip of the U, over the gap, bounce off the second tip and never touch the stones inside. I can clear the first two levels in less time than it takes to get those 5 stones. And don't you dare drop the ball either. Even if you completely clear the first two levels of everything, if you drop the ball once, your score gets penalized so severly that it's impossible to get the necessary score for two Dreamstones. And remember how the ball will bounce down sometimes ...... yeah. Makes the entire run feel like a waste of time.

So overall, I like the game well enough and think I'll eventually complete it despite the things I experienced, which could be patched out. It's also impressive what was done with such a small team. Also appreciate that the developer cared enough to read my original (much shorter) opinion. I'll certainly be looking at what comes next from him.
