Desciption of the game was amazing. Opening cinematic was exciting. Actual gameplay consists of waiting 90% of the time for the rounds to start, and then waiting 5% of the time for enemies to leave their spawn, and then 5% shooting the enemy point blank while they slowly attack the objective. Turrets and other weapons are essentially redundant due to their limited utility.
I wanted to like the game as much as the videos glorified it, but I just cannot even recommend the game even on sale.
Game is a hard pill to swallow; the moment I booted the game I realized 2 great flaws with it.
-Game CANNOT be played offline! CLIENT BASED SERVER! meaning if the DEV decides to shut it down you will be unable to even access the game!
-Antivirus exception is real! Don't really want to troubleshoot a game when I boot it up the first time. And I don't really want to disable my AV just to find out what makes the game tick!
Don't get me wrong the game is enjoyable to an extent but only if you had someone to play with. And if you can skip the fact that you:
-Can't jump over your barricades (EVEN WITH JUMP BUTTON!)
-Are playing a game made that feels and sound like halfmade UNITY content
-See mindless AI running about
-Loot box progression unlock (INGAME not real money!)
-Lack wave prep options/pause/forward
-Have extremely limited tutorial
-Don't single player OFFLINE!
TLDR
If the DEV wants to shut down the server, you are unable to play the game again.
Save your money, go buy a beer or something to snack on.
The gameplay is pretty good.
The problem of that game, is the progression is in lootboxes, which can be ok, but those lootboxes are generated by the developers servers.
The single player, also connects to the games servers. Meaning you can not play the game once the developers close the servers, as it happened in Battleborn or Darkspore before.
Add a few threads on main page saying they have "server disconnect" issues after bosses etc, plus 0 presence from devs, and 0 players online, and it looks like a trap.
A game that can be closed any time.
I own almost every game in the genre, and for example, Fortified or Orcs must Die (or sanctum or 12.300 others) can be played now or in 5 years.
They do not require to connect to servers to create lobbies even for single players, or to give you the random loot boxes that contain the upgrades for the game. So even at 55% discount, costing 5e, its a big risk, so I refunded.
Maybe if it ever is sold for 1e or so, and the servers are still up, it will be a safe purchase (as in, get some time played without caring if they close servers)
Bought this about a week ago and ended up refunding it. It seemed to have a lot of potential while I was playing through the tutorial. But after playing 2 missions back to back that stopped spawning enemies on wave 6 and 10 respectively. (Making them uncompletable). I decided it was a little to buggy for me.
Band Of Defenders is a FPS + Tower Defense hybrid. You have a base to protect, you can set up barricades, turrets etc. You have to survive a set number of rounds to win. In last round a boss shows up, you kill him and it's over. I summed up the whole game for you. There isn't much variety here. It can be fun for a few hours but that's it. There are glitches that force you to quit the game. Sometimes enemies stuck on spawn, sometimes in last round boss never comes. It hasn't been updated since release, so it is abandonware. You also gain loot crates and unlock new stuff but it is too grindy. If you are looking for a FPS + Tower Defense hybrid game there are better alternatives on Steam.
lol this game is FREAKING AWESOME the more I play it the more I love it,
seriously (not sarcasm) this is easily one of the best games on Steam,
takes fps 'skill', has all kinds of upgrades and weapons and turrets and barricades to get, all kinds of strategies to try out and test,
has solo and multiplayer etc etc
-Easily- one of the most under-rated games on steam, and maybe one of the biggest 'hidden gems' I ever played in my whole gaming life.
Anyone down-voting this either came in with massive preconceptions about the game or was expecting something else, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this game other than it's too short (lol),
and has tons of awesome things going for it.
Shame on people for not giving it a chance or whining about stupid stuff when they play it (like "I'm not getting items fast enough!!!11" or "it's too Hard WAAAaahhhHHHHHhh" etc )
------
I've had more fun in the first hour of this than playing Monster Hunter World for 30+ hours
(I'm not even joking)
This is the perfect example of a game that's simple looking, simple to play, and simply 'fun' in the process,
MHW is the perfect example of the opposite, all kinds of fancy graphics, fancy mechanics, deep layered gaming systems,
but so awkward and convoluted you're just trying to find that moment when you're actually 'having fun' and it rarely comes..
This game relies equally on your fps 'skill' and the items you get --And-- the strategy you take laying things out,
part of the fun (and 'confusion' when first trying it out) is playing and getting your items from chests as you level up/get xp etc,
many people don't realize obviously you're supposed to 'suck' when you start out, if you don't have that silly " I Want to Win No000WWWwwWW!!! " attitude then give it time and you'll get cool stuff as you play,
getting new and better items drastically changes the gameplay and fun you have as things such as " I don't have enough time to build between waves " nonsense, as many items actually help increase the rate which you do things (such as 'repair' tables that allow you to instantly repair damage to stuff instead of having to hammer at them multiple times),
and in fact makes the review of Mack the Worth-A-Buy guy (who I think is great but I do -not- agree with his review of this game) pointless,
cause his big gripe is 'lack of time' to build but honestly if you use the fast-hold-the-mouse-button mechanic given to you (plus the items that speed things up) it's actually quite reasonable, and in fact adds to the fun and 'tension' of the game.
Tips - -
- do not lay things out unless you can completely 'surround' an object (like a turret etc), otherwise they will just go to the opening and bust the turret.
That simply means don't build anything for the first few waves, that will allow you to have more money and time (later waves give more time and money to build) to built a turret and surround it completely with upgraded blocks.
Doing so will mean that turret will easily survive and from there you just strategically build more turrets etc.
- Do not forget you can create 'barricade' lines (of blocks) straight across the map to prevent enemies (especially bombers) from reaching your base!!
-- Another important tip - you can build healing kits and grenades, useful for preparing for bosses etc.
----
Basically, this game is one of those rare finds (especially nowadays) that doesn't have polish or mega funding, but is a good idea and relatively well executed and is actually 'fun' to play,
It's like those xbox 360 games nobody told you about, you thought looked 'cheesy' in the pics, but you took a chance, bought it, and were pleasantly surprised to find it was one of the most fun games you played in a long while.
Definite thumbs up, it's sucks to think it's one of those really fun games that will take forever to find people to play with cause nobody knows about it lol,
(as for me I'm gonna buy it for my friends cause that's the best way to both support the devs and find people to play with lol)
Give it a shot it's a lot more fun than most Triple-A cr-p nowadays..
: P..
(excuse my language, lol.. )
This is the definition of a great, fun idea with poor execution. Read the community hub before buying! So many players upset with the developers. I shouldn't have purchased this and immediately have requested a refund.
Pros:
Lots of fun, cool ways to setup base fortifications
Cons:
Zero multiplayerbase
Very difficult to solo play even on easy mode
No mouse speed control (it feels very slow by default)
Really DUMB AI
I'm sorry to leave such a bad review, I was genuinely excited to try this game but it's really not worth even $15...
This game was a total surprise. An impulse purchase at a friends suggestion as we love co-op games. This game is so much fun to play. We had a blast. You get to unlock more perks, weapons and costumes as you gain experience. The maps are fun and the different difficulty levels mix things up. Despite the negative reviews it's a lot of fun even on your own.
first of its not a bad game but I was hoping for more gameplay the last update was 6 months ago and it only has content for about 20 hours if you think its enough for 14 € ok have fun with the game thats all i have to say. PS thx for reading have a nice day
If this had more players I think this would be a more fun game. Even giving it that, this tower defense game doesn't quite hit home. I would prefer more opportunity to work on the base building aspect of this, but it's over in no time flat. Since there's no other players around, it doesn't add up to much defense before the match begins. The potential was there but it didn't take off.
Awesome idea... but really glitchy. You can't pick a level so you just get put into the same map over and over again. The items are cool, unlocks seem pretty common (maybe a bit stingy), guns are fun. I played 6 missions got the desert level 3 times and the crossroads twice. The second time I got the crossroads some of the enemies just dissapeared. Since I couldnt kill them I couldnt beat the level so I had to leave and get no experiene for my 30 minutes of play time. Even with this game breaking bug if you made the levels so I can pick which one I want to play, I would come back for more.
I refunded because the game offers not much...
The content is just so small, yes there is fun to be had but its just not as good as other cooperative games on the market, like killing floor 2 or recently Deep Rock Galactic..
This game is therefore average in fun and in content, i dont recommend.
If the devs seriously re.thought the game i would give it another go, but now its not a good one, to me.
With 40 players online in 4 different difficulty brackets you're not likely to find a game. Playing alone is not very fun as you don't have any time to build anything. give us unlimited time to build and think about shit, along with JUMPING and this game is good in my book. Not great, but it would be good. As it stands it's pretty childish. Also, reading the comments from the developer with sarcasm and contempt for the customers was a real let down. Unprofessionalism may be expected from a group that just reuses the same old Unity crap. GG
Very Fun Game
Co-Op based game with weapons Defences and Cosmetics.
Basically killing waves in order to survive and win Rounds until finally facing the BOSS!!
Its fun but repetative with regards to its main objective which is basically killing waves and building defences.
Cosmetics are kool and graphics are Awesome!!!!
Currently the planned endgame is gonna be a mode called Endless Mode
Basically seeing how long you can survive in endless rounds.
I like this game and will recommend it.
However do not expect much more from this game as anything game changing is classed as " Too Complicated"
Quite frankly there is nothing more planned from what i was told so there ya go.
4/5 Gameplay
5/5 Graphics
5/5 Cosmetics and Weapons
2-3/5 Longetivity
I liked the concept of the game but the actual gameplay itself was terrible. The game mode was either too hard or too easy but it all felt like this game was released a year too early, so full of glitches and confusing options and controls.
Maybe I'll check back in about a year. There wasn't much I could have done differently to make this game more-enjoyable.
This game has potential but it really isn't there yet. Tastes like early access. I mean, one of the game modes is literally not available yet. I mean - why? This is a fully released game right?
The guns and sound effects just feel so unsatisfying. Like placeholder sound effects. The voice acting is uncomfortably bad. However, I do thank them very much for making it an option to turn off character speech. They say the same 3 things (poorly) over and over and over again. After one round of this I was losing my mind.
I played about 3 rounds and felt like I'd experienced the whole game. Only thing I didn't get to enjoy was the endless grind for loot box items. This set up doesn't add enough to the game for me or long term enjoyment.
I expect they will improve over time, but for now. Its a pass unfortunately.
Initial Reaction:
The Good:
I like this game a lot - really fun co-op with friends. Small community which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. You can share weapons you craft with friends which is pretty cool. The game has a lot of potential and I'm excited to see where the developers take it. I like that you can instantly reorganize your defense between rounds (if you misplace a turret or wall, there is an "undo" option which can be used immediately or in any round after).
The Bad:
That said, it takes way too long to unlock useful items in this game - they should probably swap the model and make it so a win gives a USEFUL item and a level up gives a cosmetic. I've put in 30 hours and I still don't have level 2 or level 3 tower barricades. At level 29, I need to win 3 solo hard-mode games to earn an arsenal unlock... and I have about 35 items left to unlock. That's pretty crazy for a RNG based loot grind... Also, you don't get as much exp for playing solo.
It takes too long to upgrade turrets and walls (9 swings of the wrench when you have ~30 seconds between rounds). Also, why can't I jump on my barricades or overtop of them - what is the point of jumping? It takes 15 seconds to craft a mine... Crafting should be instantaneous in a game with limited time between rounds - or you should provide an option to delay the start of the round until we are ready and defenses are built.
Hours Played:
I've got about 30 hours so far, it's pretty fun. Easy is very easy, I usually solo on Hard and play on Apocalyptic when I have 3 other friends to chill with.
Price: 10/10
Thank you for not making us pay for lootboxes - an automatic 10/10. I've paid less for lunch... I think the game has great fun per dollar ratio.
Loot: 9/10
I like how there is separation between cosmetics and actual in game earned gear. They are clear that cosmetics do not affect your characters stats in any way. Lootboxes are fun when you don't have to pay for them. They do seem to take some time to earn though and it can make it a grindy experience - this can be frustrating if you want a better weapon because you can't simply go and buy a better weapon, you have to get lucky and win it!
Defenses: 7/10
It feels impossible to herd enemies in the direction you want, which I feel is imperative to this genre. It would be nice to be able to force enemies to walk in certain directions to maximize turret power. Right now, the turret shoots them and they smack the turret until one of them wins.
Turrents have no depth, you place them and upgrade them. If your turrets are destroyed, you lose due to the amount of enemies that spawn in the later rounds. I like that barricades around the turret absorb damage when the turret is shot directly.
Gunplay: 7/10
It's fun to shoot stuff, but there's room for improvement here. The different weapons are really neat... I just unlocked the Shotgun and it is deceptively powerful vs the big Trolls - it's really saved my bacon a few times! Admittedly though, It does feel a bit lame to be shooting at hordes of enemies with a pistol in the first round, I think you should be able to buy weapons before the first wave.
When you're actually hitting your target you don't feel like the bullet strike really matters. You can't impede them by shooting them, it just subtracts from a health bar and there is no register that you're hitting on your crosshairs like other FPS. There is no stagger which feels weird when you use powerful weapons like the shotgun. Crowd control effects on weapons should probably be considered by the development team. Right now the only way you can crowd control is to aggro the enemies and let them chase you around while your team mates deal with the other threats.
Overall: 7/10
Should you buy?: Yes
A lot of fun for 9 bucks.
Best Features:
1: Lots of content - Maps, cosmetics, guns, seems like this game has lots of stuff on launch and room to grow. I'm always excited to see what I unlock.
2: UI is clean - I was surprised by the polish of the user interface.
3: Teamwork is required - if you don't build correctly or pay attention to the map you will lose. That's a good thing for these types of games!
Top 3 Improvements Needed:
1: Definitely not enough time between waves. I feel incredibly rushed to do my repairs and build my turrets. It shouldn't take more than one hit to repair a wall or a turret if this is going to be so limited.
2: Needs to be a different strategy than spamming tesla turrets.
3: I'm doing most of the work with my guns and not with my turrets, not sure if that is intended or not - because the turrets are way more expensive than the guns. Maybe this is a lower difficulty thing, if so I'll update the review later.

Conclusion
I love these indie games that are goofy yet fun to play. The cheap price allows you and a couple of friends to pick it up and fight hordes of brainless enemies whilst building defenses in stupid locations. Bosses are classic bullet sponges, but each have "creative" abilities. Although this tower defense formula may get boring, there is a cosmetic and weapon lootbox system that will keep your interest for a bit longer.
7/10
Bought this game because I love tower games and of course its INDIE. There is a build and repair phase between each wave, and you can craft weapons you've unlocked on the fly. This is fast a paced action, great with teams, the crafting and chest rewards are a nice perk for beating each match, as you advance and unlock more loot and level up. Last wave has a boss fight. Takes serious team work to beat the harder levels.
I think this will be a huge hit. Sound effects are fantastic, graphics are smooth and great FPS even on epic settings.
Love the voice acting, and the start of the game has a nice quick tutorial. Within 30 mins I think i unlocked 20 Achievements. The in game voice chat is a nice bonus.
So far so good. I'm really digging this. To be completely honest I'm usually a solo gamer but I like how this is set up with the building aspect, the little fort you and your team mates can trick out with turrets, barricades, etc. etc. The gameplay and controls are well done as well as the graphics and it doesn't take some monster game machine to run. I was playing it on my work computer which is only rocking a GTX 1050 2GB and everything was great, I already know it'll def run like a gem on my gaming PC. Great job guys! glad I happened to stumble upon this in my game queue literally 2 hours before it was released. :)
