Alien swarm is a very interesting and enjoyable game, I found the gameplay elements enjoyable and the story fun to go through which makes it a likely game for me to go back to sometime in the future.
7/10 Fun for me and hopefully for others.
All in all, it's a fun game. The controls can be a bit confusing, but the most important controls are easy to get the hang of. Basic controls (moving and shooting) are easy, but the complicated stuff like hacking and healing is harder. The music and voice acting is well-done, as is the sound design. Sometimes it's hard to believe this is on the Source Engine, but it is, just a different perspective than you might be used to. (Then again, so is Dota 2, but I don't play that.)
Since this game is free, I recommend downloading it and practicing with bots first, then go online and play two games with humans to get your Team Fortress 2 hat. You're bound to get a few fun achievements along the way. I'll probably return to this game again in the future; it's not too shabby.
2021 edit: I've learned that one map counts as a "game" for the achievement. Most people, I think, quit out after they've completed the first two missions of the Jacob's Rest campaign, since by that time, they've gotten the TF2 hat. But you should keep playing! To get the full story, you need to play all six of the maps of the Jacob's Rest campaign. (I wish I knew why it was called that. Maybe the PDAs you can read have lore bits?)
Alien Swarm is an excellent game with loads of potential, but I must highlight that there is an even better and newer version available named Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop. It is also free and accessible on Steam. While both games are essentially the same, Reactive Drop offers numerous improvements, including additional campaigns, updates, PVP mode, and continued support. If you are a fan of Alien Swarm, I highly recommend giving Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop a try. You can check my review here.
Now, returning to the original Alien Swarm, it's a prime example of how a fantastic game can be left to decay over time. Despite this, it still provides a pure, enjoyable experience, especially when playing with friends. Although there is only one official campaign, the community has created numerous fan-made campaigns that enhance the game's replayability.
However, it's essential to note that the player population in Alien Swarm might be relatively low. This is due to the significant draw towards Reactive Drop, which offers more content and features, leading players to migrate to the newer version, which as I said, is pretty much the same game.
Also, Alien Swarm is one of the games that will never stay in your Steam library if it is not installed. Ask Valve why. Definetely has something to do with the fact that it is free to play, but as you might know most games stay in your library even after uninstalling, no matter if you gave money for them or not.
For achievement hunters: the game features 66 achievements, including some speed-run challenges. I'm uncertain about their difficulty and how feasible they are to obtain given the current player population. Additionally, keep in mind that, as mentioned earlier, the game does not remain in your library. This makes it more challenging to showcase your 100% achievement completion to your real-life friends. I might be trying someday to complete the game 100%, and then I will come back with my experience.
In summary, Alien Swarm is undeniably fun, and I encourage trying it out, particularly for the official campaign and the fan-made content. But if you're seeking a more updated and enriched experience, don't hesitate to give Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop a shot, as it builds upon the foundation of the original game and provides a superior gameplay experience.
Good graphics, low lag (and look at me running a windows 8 HP laptop at about 14 years old.) and lotsa boom bangarangaloonytoonaboom.
This game is one of the best games out there for top down shooters. Very comparable to Helldivers but even more exciting because it brings along with it a very high level of suspense and "oh crap" moments which all happen in a split second whereas with Helldivers you sort of see that coming. I absolutely love this game and the level up system designed to it. I haven't tried it but I'm going to see if I can't play this with my playstation 4 controller and mouse and keyboard and team up with my wife and kill some aliens together. If I can't please please make that an option I would easily pay 20 dollars for this game to be full up and if it had around 30 or more levels I would pay 60. Absolutely Brilliant!
this game is old but that does not stop it from being a very bad ass game. i used to play it like 4-5 years ago and its just as good as it used to be but the only problem i had is that it won't go over 1280 x 720 i think it was but pesides that you got nothing holding you back

It's fun to play with friends. It's literally impossible to beat without the help of 2 friends, so teamwork is key, especially the mission where medics are important. No spoilers.
If you are looking for an action shooter with team cooperation where mindless running will get you killed this is a game for You. On most dificulties the games enemies coming in waves enforce cooperation. Fireing lanes start to matter and even when you are not on point but securing the back You feel like Your job matters.
The game offers 8 marines to pick from. A pair of each of 4 archetypes. The medic, whos main role is to heal any damage and cure infestations. The Autogunner whos there to push the group forward or to set up supressing fire defending the group. The demolitions marine is best suited to dealing with heavier targets with the use of flamethrowers, mines grenades fire traps and the mean end of a shotgun. Finaly theres the technician for those who want to make the missions easier by welding doors and hacking security and objectives.
Individual skill is rewarded with all of these archetypes without the loss of sense of benefiting from the teamwork of entire group.
The setting pays hommage to classic movies and games of the alien franchise yet remains its own kind of alien style with a bit more arcade look. The topdown camera gives a more tactical feel for the gameplay in comparission to first person. Each marine has his own quips and oneliners, and character.
Since its free i cannot see how you wouldnt recommend it.
Great game. I personally found the missions repetitive when I played through it again, though this would be less of an issue playing with friends. Progression is great and the weapons and gadgets are awesome. Strongly recommended co-op game.

A top down shooter with online features with a variance of weapons, characters, and enemies? This has it all and is really good with it. Although not the most actively played game by valve, this is definately worth your time when you hav friends aroudn who'll play it with you. playing on the online seervers will be quite a challenge. because of the lack of communication.
very good coop game, especially with 3 of your buddies via Headset. The first three difficulty levels (easy, normal, hard) are a walk in the park, the 4th (insane) is very challenging, even for experienced gamers and the last one (brutal) is not possible to win. You have to pick your weapons carefully for and communicate in several situations to survive as a team. Funny debriefing map, nice atmosphere and low system requirements.
8/10 points in my opinion; particular with regard, that it's free on steam
Highly recommended to play with mates as a 4 co-op, particularly as it is a free game. Requires considerable team-play, communication, and understanding of the games mechanics to progress. Maps and monsters are well made. Would happily pay money for this.
This is one of those rare game's that you can replay without it feeling dull the second time. And weapon progress is nice and seen its f2p you have to try it its really worth your time.

This game, while small, is a great game from Valve that's like a top down version of Left4Dead except with alien bugs. It runs on the Source engine and enables people to make their own maps which is a plus. I like how weapons are unlockable but the default weapons still can stand a good chance against enemies on higher difficulties. Overall, it's free and I can't think of a reason not to buy it! Valve sure knows how to cater it's fans with free little gems like this game.

Best piece if freeware on steam, period. A great game o play with friends online, it is almost ridiculously fast paced and intense, almost unplayably difficult on onslaught for newbies. I am wowed at this game, absolutely brilliant game
