A very fun, turn your brain off game. You still need to think, some of the bosses can be really punishing otherwise, but you don't really need to think too much about the plot. You are a shark, a human hurt you as a pup, and so you respond reasonably by destroying the local ecosystem and become Florida's most wanted individual. Overall, a reasonable crashout...
Awesome comedy game, slight issues with graphical lag in some areas after long periods of use.
this is super fun the ending is sad but also cool i really love the mutations i HIGHLY recommend for people above the age of 13 or so because of swear words and gore
As much as I like a good space game, I also love a good underwater one too. This game checks all the boxes for me. I enjoyed it thoroughly, all aspects of it. It had a great balance of action, exploring, collecting and admiring. A beautiful underwater world with many different environments to hunt in. Runs great and graphics are awesome. I really was rooting for the sharks on this one. Many side quests to help rank up quickly and apply some really neat upgrades. This game has a lot of aspects that remind me of other games. A little bit of GTA, Strange Brigade and other RPG free roam type games. Overall a good quality game that I got for dirt cheap on sale.
Game play loop is enjoyable at first however it quickly becomes repetitive.
The different shark parts seem diverse and interesting to begin with before you realise the best builds are just each "set" of said parts, causing a complete lack of diversity in play style.
I expected the DLC to be a stark change, to offer something more that the base game didn't, however i was beyond disappointed when i realised my expectations were way too high.
I should also note that although i wasn't playing all of the content, i was giving everything a fair go, and even so my hours should speak for itself.
Its not a bad game however for £40, its horrific.
Try and get it on sale, when its below £10, and then its not too bad.
Good Game, luv the game mechanics and the story.
Fun gameplay and funny game, the narrator is a trip.
Only downfall is the gameplay gets pretty repetitive quite fast and you can only play as a bull shark.
The base game is good. The story's alright, the graphics are gorgeous, the voice overs are funny but get repetitive and stale quick. The biggest drawback is that this game is nowhere near worth the asking price - $20 for the base game, I could see but nothing more than that. Other reviewers mention the same thing - price is too high.
Now where the game REALLY drops it and why I gave it a negative review - the DLC. They add 1 new area, with no real story, re-hash of the same enemies (but with helicopters), and increase the level cap from 30 to 40. Well you don't really need the increase of the level cap; by 30, hardly anything can touch you, especially with the upgraded evolutions. The DLC adds new evolutions that, while glowy and cool, don't mean much - you can still get everything done with the base game evolutions. And where it absolutely SUCKED: the laziness! You finish the new area, upgrade your new evolutions in ~2-3 hours. But then the "story" takes you all the way back through all the zones of the base game only this time, you swim here for a quest, fight the same 1 or 2 "boss" enemies over and over and over in each area, and the rings - My God, the rings. They paid a programmer to sit down and place Superman 64 style "follow-the-rings" quests and slapped it in the DLC.
Overall, I enjoyed the game. I did, it's a great little time waster. I just finished hundreds of hours on BG3 and this game was just what I needed - a brainless time waster. But for the price, and the insultingly useless DLC to boot, pass.
Buy this game on sale, don't touch it otherwise, and by sale, I mean less than $10 for game and DLC.
This review is not strictly negative. I recommend getting this game on sale, but I would NEVER pay more then maybe $15 USD for this, DLC included.
Maneater is a game made by the same studio that brought you Killing Floor 2, a game I dearly love. However, this game does not hold the same level of quality, nor does it justify it's whopping $40 USD price tag. If you want more details, read below. If you want the short version however, here it is: The game runs like crap (crashes, stuttering, etc), the gameplay is decently fun but is also highly repetitive, audio design is amazing except an annoy narrator that talks to you the entire game, and the story is awful.
Going more in depth, I'd like to cover the performance issues first. In almost 13 hours of play, I had this game crash 3 times. I have had extremely frequent stuttering, and on occasions outright freezing. The game is terribly optimized. Fish often despawned in front of me because I entered an area that had an event, and because of the terrible optimization the game would've crashed if it loaded in the event and the fish. So the fish just vanish. Flickering clipping issues in certain areas is also an issue I've had.
The gameplay is extremely simple. You are a shark. You can bite, lunge, dodge and use a special "mutation" ability later on. If you bite something, it takes damage. If it's smaller than you, you hold it in your jaws and thrash it around until it dies. All enemies follow this format, except boats. For boats, you either have to do the above format, or eliminate every human on board it. It's not a bad loop, but chomping down on your 1000th fish or your 200th boat isn't exactly thrilling gameplay. Navigation is also awful. This game was not designed for precision movement. Your shark will auto lock onto whatever fish or other creature is closest to the center of your screen. Did you want to jump out of the water to get on land? Too bad, a fish was on the corner of your screen, get flung backwards to lunge at it. Also you have to fight on land, and controlling a shark on land is freaking awful. With the repetitive button presses for this game, I'm 90% sure I gave myself arthritis a few years earlier just from these 13 hours alone.
The audio design is where I'll give some major credit, exceeeeeeept for the narrator. I hated him, so I went into the audio settings and put his audio down to 0. Except that did almost fucking nothing. Other than having to hear his dumb voice for 13 hours, everything else if stunningly well executed. The screams as your shark eats people, the music and combat sounds underwater, all of it just screams of love and care. Genuinely the best part of this game is the audio if you can ignore the narrator.
Graphics are just strange. On one hand you have these gorgeous underwater areas with amazing lighting and murky textures. On the other hand you have the god awful abomination that is any area above the surface. It legit goes from modern graphics to some cartoony sandbox from the PS3/XBOX 360 era. I'd be more inclined to give this a pass if all the stuff they made wasn't unoptimized as heck, as stated above.
And the story is just... strange? If you want me to care about the characters, maybe give them screen time? The main villain gets some audio logs type lore from optional side objectives, but overall I don't know the character enough to care why he's the villain of this game's story. Maybe, at most, 30 minutes of the game was story content? The rest was just missions that tell you to go here, kill this, and move on. Boring.
Overall, if you want to turn your brain off for an evening or two, this'll do you fine. But it's not worth the asking price and it's certainly not deserving of high praise. Just overall a massive disappointment for me.
I love this game. Took me a little over 13 hours to 100% the game (my 3rd playthrough in total but it's my 1st on steam) including the Truth Quest DLC. Not super long, but this also wasn't my first time playing the game so I skipped a lot of the story and kind of speed-ran some parts. Yes, this game is a little janky sometimes. It has strange bugs (like enemies being thrown hundreds of meters away when you attack them) that are never going to be fixed and lags uncontrollably in some of the Truth Quest content, but I don't really care. It's just fun to swim around as a big shark and eat everything. The gameplay loop is repetitive, with only a handful of unique objectives (eat people, eat big fish, destroy boat, etc.) but I did them all multiple times and I had a great time. The creature design is overall decent (not bad, per se) and there is a pretty good amount of variety in the different fish you encounter. The evolution designs are really great in my opinion, with each having a cohesive theme that runs through every body part, and subjectively, I think they all look great. Also, some of the special enemies like the electric great white among a few others have really great designs as well. The map is fairly large, with a decent range of environments like swamps, cities, and the open ocean. Unless there are some other shark games that I missed in the past 2 decades, there is literally no other game like this available. I would have put hundreds of hours into this game as a kid if it was around back then. If you like sharks, or the ocean in general, this game is definitely worth checking out, especially at its sale price, but honestly I would have no problem paying full price for this game.
I totally underestimated this game when I bought it. Straight up joyful sharky violence with a surprisingly good story. Just the right duration of gameplay without overstaying its welcome, satisfying learning curve, gorgeous handcrafted environments and some solid humour.
This game was well worth the money and time. I had so much fun playing this game and killing time as well. It's a super simple, hilarious and fun game that Lots of people could enjoy. The world is extremely well made and the game mechanics are super smooth and fluid. If you choose to play with the commentator/narrator you'll have a very good laugh throughout the game with some of the outrageous and unhinged they say. You play as a shark devouring everything you can and evolving and growing to such a large size it's hard to put down. You also have different evolution parts too choose from to change the gameplay a little from limbs made of bone to even border line lightning strikes.
The DLC is also worth the money as well, It adds another section to the game with more perks and limbs to unlock in a much more difficult and aggressive environment for those who want to keep fighting strong enemies and become even stronger themselves.
This game put simply is like a culmination of goat simulator with a splash of doom. An overall fun game, if you like causing chaos, exploring an aquatic world you'll most likely enjoy this game.

I already love any game animal-related and this is an amazing example of what a "shark video game" should be! This is genuinely one of the most fun I've ever had with playing video games and being a completionist, it was quite fun to 100% it as well, the DLC is very worth it in my opinion (if you already liked the base game). Never played anything like it!!

in prologue basically you'll see everything. Boring and repetitive missions.
Open world as a hungry shark what more could you ask. Very fun just a lot of grinding for everything.
Combat Mechanics takes a little while to get used to, especially the auto targetting.
Exploration becomes a bit mindless towards the end.
Other than that, a great 10-12 hours of fun.
Thoroughly enjoyed messing beachgoer's days up. The progression from baby shark to behemoth whale-eating monster was fun from start to end. Plenty of quests/challenges/bosses to take on, lots of objectives scaling in difficulty. I would say the game does a great job presenting harder enemies early game to give that satisfying payout when you can easily take them down later on.
Only critique I would say is once reaching elderhood, the game clearly reaches its ceiling. You figure out by spamming attack you can pretty quickly take down enemies especially if you've buffed your shark all the way to max. Not a con if you enjoy the thrill of getting overpowered revenge in an ocean that once haunted you. I wish there was an option to 'reset' the playthrough at the end and become a baby shark to experience growing up in a different area of the map, since once the story is finished, that's pretty much it.
Still 10/10, got 20 hours out of a pretty cheap experience (bought on sale for $10).
This game was very fun. If you want a game where you can chill and take your time to explore in between intense violence and boss fights I highly recommend it. 8/10 had a great time.
It's stupid, its dumb and its fun. Gets repetitive after a bit but you dont really need much gameplay variety when you can play as a huge shark fuckin shit up.

Really really did enjoy this game, was a ton of fun to turn my brain off and just chomp anything and everything. Such a shame that that the game crashes constantly and freezes every 2 seconds seems to have been at least three years now based off reading some forums, not really sure what the issue is but I crashed on the last boss fight about 42 times... Makes it really hard to recommend the game even though it's so good. If you can deal with the potential of having the issues I and many others have had then it's worth it. Easily would be a higher rating if the crashing and massive lag wasn't a thing.

Good game, but crashes every once in a while. If the autosave hadn't prevented the crashes from harming my progress, this'd prolly be a negative review. Would appreciate it if they added an icon that pops up whenever the autosave triggers.
It was a really fun and interesting game and I loved the experience.But there is one problem in this game sometime the game keep crashing after a few minute.

I really enjoyed a lot about this game. The storyline was fun and engaging, but there was plenty to do and see in between completing story bits. Controls worked like a charm (I have an XBox controller). Chomping and smashing things to bits was EXTRA satisfying.

Game's pretty fun. It's the best shark simulator I can find on the market.
It was fun RIGHT UNTIL the last 2 sectors. Then the game kept crashing over and over.
Beefy AMD build. so its definitely the game plus i saw a bunch of people saying it was happening for them too.

slightly repetative, but super fun game. It does not stretch it's playtime overly long, so the gameplay is fine for the short duration of the game. 100% it in roughly 17 hours. Would not pay full price, but get it during a sale and you wont regret your time as a badass shark.

So I bought it on Steam and it doesn't have that problem, WORTH IT.
Finished the game a while ago (including dlc) im still yet to come back a 100% the game i remember when the game first came out watching thegamingbeaver play it and i was like whoa i have to get this game it looks so cool.

This game is awesome, it has a decent amount of gameplay with or without the truth quest DLC. The story is awesome with the DLC, without the DLC it isn't as good but still an amazing game. Also the graphics are really good. I am honestly kind of sad i beat the game and there is nothing else to do, will a maneater 2 come out?

The dialogue and characters are enjoyable the game play is entertaining but grinding infamy for the 100% was about 5 hours of my life i wont be getting back. Which is why only a 7.5 and not a 9. It cant be a 10 just because of how repetitive the game play is with very little deviation. I would say get it when on sale its a good game but it is NOT 40$ good.

I finally 100% the game, I feel like I need more...more I tell you ! throw some more DLC ! I cant get enough of the narrator ! LOL I enjoy the game a lot even if the story line and controls are all over the place. All I can say was this game was fun and simple !
