Ancestors Legacy is a great real-time strategy game that really stands out. I’m not sure how historically accurate the storylines are, but each faction’s campaign is well-written, fun, and engaging. The missions are cleverly designed, gradually revealing different parts of the map as you progress through objectives adds a strong narrative flow to each level.
The gameplay mechanics are also a highlight. Stealth and ambush tactics actually make a difference, and environmental modifiers like weather and fog of war add meaningful variation and depth to combat. I haven't encountered any bugs that disrupted my experience, which is always a big plus.
One mechanic I especially liked is how units lock into combat. It punishes poor macro-management in a way that feels fair and encourages more strategic thinking, something that sets it apart from other RTS games like Age of Empires.
While I’d love to give it a perfect score, I believe there’s always room for improvement in any game. So for me, Ancestors Legacy earns a solid 9/10. It's a must-play for any RTS fan.
fun
I came , I saw , I axed. 8/10 would try to conquer fellow men again
Dead game
6/10
这游戏优化是真的烂啊,我现在都换成5070Ti了还是那个奶奶样
For anyone wanting the quick summary:
- Funny as a concept, not so funny excecution. Slow gameplay to the point you're probably missing AoE2 and at least having some functioning army and faster combat. 4/10 overall
Now for the long story:
As much as it pains me to say this, I can't recommend this game. I played through the first campaing and most missions felt the same: survive till you get to your max army and then try to slowly push through your enemies (which, by the way, outnumber you heavily to the point that sometimes it just feels unfair (and this is normal difficulty, can't imagine it on hard)) and try not to lose too many vet units or combat will be even worse.
There's no reward for the player on planning an engagement. Only 4 unit types and 3 get mixed on the melee with little to none chance to move them around once engaged. Yes, there's flanking and some skills but compared to other games it sucks.
Came back again after giving it a couple of years and played another campaing. On the first mission you're already given 3 objectives to push, they attack you one after another while you are given minimal forces and just your main building. Really? Not even some cache from the sidequest on the village you take before launching this? Or just let the mine, lumbermill and farm structures as some kind of prize (they're 30 wood in total, less than what one cache would give you). My dammed reward for clearing those locations was -wait for it- not having to clear them with AN ARMY, while before I had to do it with just one hero and an NPC which I didn't get to control either. Totally god tier level design there
The only good aspect of the game were the visuals and the music, but for games like this I prefer to stick to company of heroes 2. At least there I have some tactical choices to make and not just get on a meat grinder that's slower than a slug.
Helfen, Wehren, Heilen
Pray for our Order in which God has assembled us.
Gladly I obey and go where duty calls - to confront destiny, sword in hand. In the face of adversity, a true knight rises. In the face of adversity, a true knight rises. Warriors are shaped by the battles they fight, and their honor is forged in the fires of combat.
Nice.
Fun for a few hours, here or there. The campaigns quickly turn into a slog, and I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way judging by the completion rates on the achievements. As I write this, only 30.7% of players have finished the first campaign which serves as the game's tutorial. Less than half that (14.3%) have finished the next campaign, with the numbers continually dropping from there.
I think part of this is because the game is a little more difficult than most RTS games I've played, even on the easy difficulty setting. The player is forced to act quickly and multitask to have any chance of success, and the usage of the tactics that the game teaches you is highly encouraged, although unfortunately they aren't that effective or easy to use in my experience. When you can pull off something smart like using an archer squad to bait enemies into the open away from the main army so your infantry can wipe them out quickly you'll see good results, however it takes a while to get rid of every enemy squad using such methods.
The game is pretty well polished as a whole, at least in 2025. I'm unsure what the state of the game was at launch, though that doesn't really matter now. I had intended to make this a negative review before retrying it as my first attempt in December 2022 was less than enjoyable, however after playing for almost three hours today I really can't find anything to criticise too much. I can't really find anything to praise either, this is a very okay game over all. I'm still a little on the fence and I don't know how much longer I'll play it, but I do recommend it at a deep discount. I picked up the complete edition bundle, and that's what I suggest you do as well.
F- - Game play . rather run my face along a belt sander then put any effort into this
The best part of this game for me is the soundtrack, it's make my blood boil and enjoy play this medieval RTS. I really suggest you to buy this game if you love strategy and man management. This is one of my favourite Medieval RTS game so far. I hope the devs make some game like this again in the future.
Brilliant game highly enjoy it well worth the price
Loved the gameplay, music, and story lines. Bit different and kind of a refresher from the other RTS games I'm used to.
Good graphics, good storyline, good voice acting and sound effects.
The combat seems a bit like mobs melee smashing together and one mob or the other wins out. There are some tactics that can be helpful, like flanking, out manourvering, enfilade fire with archers (need to avoid friendly fire), and some unit abilities. But My experience has been, generally try to seek what ever advantage you can in the battle, and retreat, replenish, heal and jump back into the fray. Can try use traps and tricks but ultimately the stronger mob wins the melee. Burn down some buildings, capture, exploit and continue.
Not the pre-modern war tactics game of the total war series, more advanced combat mechanics than age of empires. Base building is very limited. Overall enjoyable.
Main storyline tells of Viking conquests and exploits and conflicts. If you did not already have some understanding of this historical period you might learn something and go on to learn more about it elsewhere.
Zooming in to watch the melees is ok.
Play wih Vikings is funny :)
abandoned concept
terrible mechanics. awful pathfinding and unresponsive controls. Units do not respond to commands and bigger units get stuck on bridges. this game should not have been a full release i feel like i playing a beta. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. total war does the same thing but way bigger and better.
insanely rough, very jank, terrible voice acting, mechanics that don't work, and it takes a quarter of a century to kill one guy even if you attack from behind with 5 people.
INteresting game
Hands down one of the most fun strategy games I've played in recent years. The only downside is the UI, which after a few hours you start ignoring its barebones state and even enjoy it. The tactics, the simple yet at the same time complex strategy elements offer a great deal of fun. I just wish there were more maps, factions and game modes, not really one to care for story campaigns so I just play skirmish. An endless mode where defeated AI would be replaced by more AI would be a lot of fun for example.
But still, the base game is so much fun, definitely worth the money you spend on it.
GODD
Fun game for when you got no one online to play with or you just want to chill. Build an base and army RTS.
Once you've played with each factions units and full unit tree, the game gets very repetitive very fast. However, the campaign is fun, so you'll get 25 hours out of that. Skirmishes are where this game fades, ironically. RTS usually shine in skirmish mode.
5/10
Great Game and a really good RTS. I liked the stories and pseudo quests during campaign gameplay. All the units are generally quite balanced, except for the Arab grenadiers. They are just OP af. Lots of action, lots of resource control, lots of domination and destruction.
Though as the campaigns persisted, they became like weirdly anti-Christian. I mean, I know they did terrible things, but so did literally everyone ever at the time. Its not like Pagans and Muslims were much better, but it really drew this point home. And this is coming from a gay athiest.
Anyway. I really enjoyed this game and anyone who enjoys those squad based RTS's like Command&Conquer or Battle for Middle Earth, you will really like this game.
Fun for a couple of hours, but quickly becomes plodding, and tiresome: every enemy squad halts your progress and battles are slow. It's just not fun, even on the lower difficulty settings.
not bad
As with all Destructive Creations games, it's a decent concept that looks very good on the trailer and then is a slog to actually play through.
This is a Hollywood'esqe COH clone set in the middle ages. If you like point and click rock-paper-scissors then you might enjoy. Nothing tactical or strategic to be found on any meaningful level. I found it rather mindless, and a slog to get through the first couple viking missions. Voice acting was pretty bad. Felt like I was playing a free phone game.
As an RTS fan I am disappointed:
- 4 nations campaigns with 2 leaders in each nation, 5 missions per each leader + 5 missions for saracens (DLC) = 45 missions - sounds great but they are so short that you don't really feel any connection with the story (it is over just after start)
- difficulty is ridiculously low (and I was playing on highest one)
- very little variety of units (like 2-3 infantry, 1-2 shooting, 1-2 horse, 1-2 siege), it is rather rock-paper-scissor strategy game
- limit of units in game to 10 + food requirement - I mean I start building an army and its already maxed out
- I feel like an attempt to make medieval company of heroes but on much smaller scale - it might as well be a mobile game
The pros though:
- I liked the music
- I liked the fact, that campaigns were historically rooted
Got me bored around 4th map into the campaign, there aren't many units to choose from and the combat strategies are very limited. The upper limit of 10 squads makes resources extremely useless too. Can't find a reason to keep playing.
"Ancestors Legacy" is a real-time strategy game focused on medieval warfare, featuring beautiful graphics and immersive environments. It introduces engaging concepts like squad-based tactics and melee combat, with a strong storytelling and diverse factions enhancing game-play. However, despite its appealing elements, the game became boring after just five hours due to uneven pacing and repetitive missions. The lack of variety in objectives and clunky UI detracted from the experience. While the game shows potential and craftsmanship, it ultimately struggled to maintain player engagement over a longer period.
Great game love how you can zoom in on the fighting action and see it unfold with cool moves knocking each other down alot of single player missions to play 100% get esp if on sale and you like RTS games alot of fun
I loved the first few missions and the story of the campaing, but afterwards the unpolished gameplay becomes obvious and will just ruin your game everytime.
Plus: Story is sometimes interesting
Minus: Gameplay itself - its a rush game.
- rush to objective or get defeated by AI spaming 5 units then 10 then 20 and so on (player has 10 max).
- upgrades of units have limited to no effect.
- experience has zero impact.
- hiding, flanking, charging into the rear has no effect.
- "technology" upgrades has no effect other then you can now recruit a unit which has zero difference to unit you already had.
- archers are completely useless for player - they can do friendly fire and nothing else. My level 4 archers with accuracy bonus managed to kill my hero surrounded by 3-4 units (20 soldiers) without killing ONE enemy soldier.
- formations are completelly useless (spearwall will do nothing, shieldwall against archers has no effect)
In the end, its all the time the same, rush and sprint to objective, charge your units against AI, rinse and repeat in the next mission.
The game itself is not worth the asking price - tops is around 5€ - anything more is sadly not worth it.
Fire game cant lie
Very fun, love this game
One of the best historical strategy games on Steam. Reminds me of the game Praetorians but better. The campaigns are really well done.
This game does not get enough credit in my opinion, I wouldn't rank it among the very best, but it's almost there. It tries to be different and manages to do so in an interesting way, which is no easy feat, I think that some of the mechanics they came up with are seriously good and creative. The single player is well done. I'm giving the campaigns another shot after dropping the game a bit too quickly the first time around and it's cool so far. I am still not a fan of the heavy RNG in the game. I used to hate the idea behind the squads getting caught and glued to random fights I have not intended to start but I then realized it is pretty well implemented, although it still sucks that sometimes archers that are far away and have no reason to panic sometimes run erratically towards the enemy with no reason when given an order to retreat.
To clarify for those who don't know, you can't move units once they are engaged in battle, the only way to disengage is to retreat, it's a headache to get the hang of at first, but once you do, it adds an interesting layer of tactics and planification to the battles. My complaint was about RNG that comes into play again in this mechanic as you don't have control over where your troops will retreat unless you send them all the way back to the base, that leads to some chaotic situations that can feel unfair, but in single player if worse come to worse you can just reload a save. The thing is I think that the devs are capable of making a truly great RTS, as I have played and enjoyed both War Mongrels and 63 days, and while those are not proper "RTS" in a traditional way, they still hint at the developer's sense of creativity and potential to make a really great RTS game. And so does Ancestors Legacy in many ways, but unfortunately I think it's not there yet.
I don't usually do this but here's some quick feedback as I have many other little gripes with the game and I really want the next attempt at an RTS if there is one to succeed more :
- The UI is perfectible, especially the color scheme for formations, although the blue color favors immersion as it's quite discrete, it's very hard or sometimes downright impossible to see clearly especially when the troops are in foliage.
- Graphics have that blurry effect and even in the highest resolutions there's that flickering on some textures, especially when there are light sources such as fire behind them, it feels like constant flashing lights, on the armors and weapons for example, that is annoying in the long run,
- Combat is too RNG heavy.
- It's made worse by the fact that there's a lack of information and details given to the player regarding unit stats etc, overall it's not as clear as it should be how strong exactly our units are at any given time, their weaknesses, the impact of upgrades on them, etc, it wouldn't have hurt if all of this was more detailed with more precision.
- This lack of information is present also in other areas, while there is a great deal of quality of life stuff and a really well thought out introduction campaign with lots of attention to detail regarding teaching us how to play, the status effects icons have no description, the elements around the squad banners (icons over them ) lack a clear explanation, and for me at least, they are not as intuitive as devs probably thought they were... enemy field of view, range of awareness, are approximative also, and just part of a guessing game that could have been avoided, those are the examples off the top of my head...
- The Rock Paper Scissor formula, while an okay design choice, could be a bit more nuanced. Giving more attributes to units in a way that gives them more nuanced roles and allowing more versatility could add more variety in player choice, playstyle, and skill expression, which in turn could be a great way to add depth and an element of surprise/unpredictability to the game while reducing the reliance on RNG at the same time.
- Personal : Not a fan of the overly emphasized brutality in the game, although I can understand this artistic stance as the thematic lends itself to it enormously, I mean while it may be a selling point for some, I don't think it is for many, and I dare say probably most, and it can put off quite a few players who otherwise like the game.
Hope this feedback is useful.
Two thumbs up!!
nice game
The game looks great, but unfortunately the game play lacks polish. The economy is essentially useless. The AI throws so many troops at you its all you can do to keep up on a good day (by the way, I've only played on easy and still find this game to be incredibly difficult). To win, you simply ignore the side quests and rush the objective. Subsequently, that takes all the fun out of it. The difficulty ramp is extreme and the difficulty itself will make you sweat... on easy. I really want to like this game and I keep finding myself coming back to it because it feels like it has potential, but it really, really needs some polish. The best I can do at the moment is hope the developers are paying attention to the reviews and fix the difficulty and game play issues.
Game play: Mediocre? You can hide in bushes and "ambush" but it doesn't change much form just rushing in. There appear to be upgrades but earning them is quite difficult and the longer the mission goes on, the more AI overwhelms you. To be frank, it's a sweaty game.
Story: Good, but ruined by the sweaty game play.
For $5, it's worth a try. I would not pay much more than that for this game. It feels like all of the effort went into graphics.
miao
I was expecting primitive gameplay for some reason. I was surprised at how fun this game is, and how your battlefield tactics really matter. The developer paid attention to unit utility and interaction. It is not a game about numbers of troops. Type of troop, troop placement, and tactics really matter. Highly recommend this one! If it is on sale for $20 or less, GRAB IT!
its awesome
so much fun.
its viking Company Of Heros... its a good game but lacks depth, its a little slow and clunky to play. IDK after a few hours i was just board with it.
Good,it was better if it was an option to control a character when you give zoom on a squad ,like on Men at War
Gameplay, atmosphere and the campaings are well enough. It's definitely one of the best strategy games I've played so far. Its historical campaigns make the game playable so long. There are some mistakes or non-true points in the stories but it is not a big deal. There are some bugs that I had to load game again for a few times. Squads are not so crowded like in the Total War games or so few as in the Age of Empires games. It is a good mixture. The game both frees the player in tactics and provides immersion through the linearity of the story. Shortly, it is an above average game. 7.8/10 It would easily be 8.5/10 if there wasn't any bugs
If you like the Age of Empires campaign mode then you should fairly enjoy this.
It feels like a very simplified version of AoE, I mean very simplified! Especially when it comes to base building and troops. As of such, replay value or skirmish mode is not great.
