You can take down enemies using different tactics and also you have a lot of bonecharms which you can craft into one so that you can use them as you see fit. But they haven't gave much of a thought on the Original Game+ mode.
Still fun!
The worst Dishonored game, frustrating level design and powers, inconsistent AI and buggy game play make the game bad
Dishonored: Death of the Outsider is, without a doubt, one of the most frustrating and unnecessary sequels to a beloved game series. What began as a fresh, exciting world of stealth, intricate choices, and freedom of play in the original Dishonored quickly devolved into a disjointed, uninspired mess in its third installment. As a follow-up to the already lackluster Dishonored 2, Death of the Outsider completely fails to capture the magic that made the first game such a standout title.
One of the most baffling and egregious decisions in Death of the Outsider is the forced narrative direction. The game’s central premise revolves around the need to kill the Outsider, a character who was once a mysterious, morally ambiguous figure. The Outsider’s role in the original games was one of subtlety and depth, giving players the freedom to interpret his influence in a way that suited their playstyle. But in Death of the Outsider, this complex character is reduced to little more than a plot device for a forced Deus Ex Machina-style conclusion. It’s a lazy and disappointing turn of events, one that robs the story of its original intrigue and thematic richness. The game pushes you into making the choice to eliminate the Outsider—no matter how you feel about it, no matter what you’ve learned or experienced throughout the series.
This narrative decision isn’t just frustrating; it feels downright disrespectful to the lore that Dishonored carefully built over the previous entries. The Outsider, once an enigmatic force of nature, is reduced to a target that must be eliminated, stripping away the mystery and the moral complexity that made him so compelling in the first place. Players are essentially railroaded into a one-dimensional storyline that feels forced and unnecessary, removing the agency that was such a hallmark of the series.
Gameplay, while functional, does little to redeem the experience. You play as Billie Lurk, who, despite being a new protagonist, lacks the depth or character development to make her engaging. The powers, which once felt like a meaningful extension of your character's identity, now feel like a clumsy retread. The introduction of "Void powers" isn’t enough to hide the fact that the gameplay lacks the freshness and creativity that made the earlier games so enjoyable. Stealth, while still the central mechanic, feels like it’s been shoehorned into an uninspired story, leaving little room for the player to approach problems in the diverse, organic ways that made the first Dishonored such a breath of fresh air.
The level design, which was once praised for its complexity and freedom of approach, is notably more linear and uninspired. The environments lack the rich detail and interconnectedness of earlier entries, often feeling like empty, soulless backdrops for a story that doesn’t deserve them. Death of the Outsider tries to replicate the "multiple paths, multiple outcomes" mentality, but it fails miserably to offer the same depth of choice or consequence that made the first Dishonored such an outstanding game.
Ultimately, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider is a sad, forced conclusion to a series that once had so much promise. The decision to kill the Outsider is emblematic of the game’s biggest problem: it throws away the series’ core strengths in favor of a shallow, predictable storyline. The forced Deus Ex Machina narrative, the lackluster gameplay, and the botched characterization leave the game feeling like a cheap cash-in rather than a meaningful continuation of the series. This installment feels like an afterthought, and in many ways, it ruins the legacy of the Dishonored series.
Pros:
Gameplay still offers some basic stealth and action mechanics
A few interesting powers to experiment with
Cons:
Forced narrative that undermines the series' lore and character depth
The Outsider, once an intriguing figure, is reduced to a plot device
Uninspired, linear level design
Lackluster new protagonist with little character development
No meaningful choices or impact on the world
In short, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider feels like a betrayal to fans of the series. The forced narrative, dull gameplay, and overall lack of creativity make it a hollow experience. This is not the conclusion that Dishonored deserved, and it’s a shame that this game marks the end of what could have been an extraordinary franchise. Avoid this one at all costs—Death of the Outsider doesn’t just fail to live up to the standards set by its predecessors; it actively drags the series down.
Great Dishonored gaming as always :D
I gotta say. Between Dishonored 2 and DOTO this one is my favorite. Now I might be alone here but honestly I had a lot more fun playing through this game and cannot wait for my next run.
I really tried to like Dishonored 2 but there are just a lot of design decisions that hold it back. The Clockwork and Stilton Manor are cool on their first playthrough but offer little in replayability on subsequent playthroughs. Especially if you ghosted them once as their ghost pathways are so much faster than anything else.
DOTO has more open level design which plays to the series strengths. It also doesn't have any targets you have to take out, so you can decide for yourself if you want to kill or spare them based on your own views.
The shining star are the additional contracts in each level (except the last one).
They are a treat for someone like me as I never play with objective markers on. So I actually have to think about each contract scout out locations and find a way to fulfill the contract. It is great and honestly the way it was meant to be played imo.
The final level however is pretty weak and I will probably not replay it except for the alternate ending and the ghost/clean hands achievement run. It is just similarly weak in design than the rest. It is just a corridor with very little openness.
They have also removed the Chaos system. Which I am not opposed to. Dishonored 2 already only incorporated the Chaos System in a pretty shallow way that only counted kills towards chaos and didn't care for any other action you took.
Most notably Dishonored 2 had almost no variance between high/low chaos except with the number of bloodflies in any given level. So the implementation here would have probably been pretty shallow anyway.
I also really like the protagonists abilities. Though they are more limited in scope they make up for it in depth. They combine really way and facilitate a more methodical playstyle. The runes are also out and you cannot upgrade your abilities. But I actually don't dislike it. This gave the designers the option to fully take advantage of Billie's kit. something Dishonored 2 missed the mark on.
"Dishonored: Death of the Outsider" is a fitting standalone conclusion to the acclaimed stealth-action series. Developed by Arkane Studios, the game offers players the role of Billie Lurk, a compelling and morally complex protagonist, as she seeks to eliminate the enigmatic Outsider. The narrative is rich and thought-provoking, exploring themes of power, divinity, and redemption. Gameplay stays true to the series' roots, with a focus on creative freedom and player agency. The new powers, such as Displace and Semblance, streamline the experience by encouraging experimentation without the need for mana refills. The removal of the chaos system allows players to approach missions without feeling penalized for their choices, whether stealthy or lethal. Visually, the game maintains the franchise's signature art style, blending steampunk and gothic aesthetics. Karnaca, the setting, is beautifully rendered, offering a mix of vibrant environments and eerie undertones. Overall, "Death of the Outsider" is a tightly crafted, atmospheric adventure that serves as a satisfying sendoff for the series, even if it doesn’t reach the depth or complexity of earlier entries. Fans of the Dishonored universe will find much to enjoy, while newcomers might appreciate its standalone accessibility.
Only worth playing to conclude the series story, otherwise the other 2 games are better.
A lot shorter than either Dishonored or Dishonored 2. Has some new abilities and whalebone charms. For some reason they updated this game in January, 2025, which is real dedication for such old titles
I caught this one as a Steam sale item and I'm glad I finally finished it. It serves as a bookend for the D1 and D2 games and provides a bit of a finale to it all. It was fun and nice to see a new set of powers after trying out Corvo, Emily, and Daud in previous games and DLCs. This installment felt even darker than the previous two but then again we are dealing with a truly weird cult and the death of a god. It's a bummer that we probably won't see more Dishonored games but if you enjoyed the first two you should take he time to finish the story. It helps bring a sense of closure.
Same price as dishonored 2 for a glorified DLC with only 1 super noteworthy mission
One of best game, mecanics, story and all the stuff are incredible
Darker and sparer than 1 and 2, worth playing alone but better if you have played the first two to understand the characters and how the world works. Michael Madsen does a great job on the VO for Doud; may be some of his best work.
Not as good as the first 2, but is definitely a solid, fun game.
Didnt hit as hard for me as 1 and 2 but its still Dishonored and its still fun
kind of unbelievable what you get for a DLC. thing's jam packed with stuff to see and do.
easy recommend. if you like Dishonored, it's more of that
was confused the whole time why the MC had both arms. figured it would be part of the story. it wasn't lol i just never did that one mission in D2 where she regrows her arm
A solid spin-off DLC that introduces several interesting gameplay abilities to the mechanics of the second game, along with a new standalone storyline. It delves into the conclusion of Daud, the Outsider, and Billie Lurk, and seemingly, unfortunately, the Dishonored series as a whole.
Many fans may have mixed feelings about how the Outsider, as the central figure of this expansion, and his lore were presented. However, I believe the developers did a good job of clarifying many questions about the Void and its Prisoner. The finale ties these explanations together in a logical way. Whether you like this approach or not is debatable, but it was executed competently, and I personally was satisfied.
What’s saddening is that it’s already been eight years, and it seems unlikely that we’ll see a new installment in this series. And recent news about Arkane Studios doesn't add a lot of optimism too. Still, this DLC is both good and, most importantly, engaging. 9.0/10.
The game is the same as Dishonored 2, feels more like a DLC then a separate game. Would be the same rating as Dishonored 2 but giving it a lower rating due it being too short, should just be a DLC for D2. Story-wise loved the spin-off and conclusion to the story, overall an amazing franchise. 7/10.
A good extra note for the Dishonored franchise. All the praise I have for Dishonored and Dishonored 2 applies here, save for some of the depth of abilities we saw in the first two, although the few but broadly-useful powers Billie gets is a refreshing change of pace. I'm glad we got to see the rest of Billie's story in the same way we got to see Daud's in the Knife of Dunwall from the first game, and getting a little more of Karnaca was also nice. As long as you understand this is a big DLC—not a small game—you should enjoy it bunches.
Dishonored: Death of the Outsider is the follow up game to Dishonored II. Set right after the end of Dishonored II, players will get the chance to play as Billy Lurk as she seeks out her old friend and mentor Daud and joins him in his quest to end the Outsider. This game primarily uses the same gameplay as Dishonored II with the addition of a few new abilities as well as the removal of the chaos system. There is only one big choice in this game, and that comes at the end. While at first I took a bit of an issue with the loss of the chaos system so unique to the Dishonored games, I found it easy to overcome this change with interesting storytelling that makes a Dishonored game so good. Players will get the chance to still be as merciful or chaotic as they wish, it will just not effect the state of the world. Will you kill the Outsider or is there another way?
This game can best be described as a HUGE DLC for Dishonored 2. If you enjoyed that game and want more, get this for sure. If not, try that game first. If you did not enjoy Dishonored 2, do not get this game.
Death of the Outsider offers new and creative mechanics, as well as giving the option to use the abilities from the previous game if you prefer them. The story, characters, and environments are as quality as the previous installment. I really enjoyed both.
I think people critics the game too much. The 1st and 2nd was like top A this 3rd one is a bit stale i think the story writing is a bit stale gave it 6/10. Like the new looks and upgrades just a bit disappointed on how ez altough a bit challenging the game is. although I would like a continuation of the game itself I understand the closure gives and ending towards the game storyline. I kinda had hoped they brought Emily and Corvo Into this as well but i get it its the sidecharracter storyline so Still thumbs up from me
Assuming that we are not going to get a new Dishonored game in the future, this is the end. And I can not say that it is a grand finale for me. It is not that gameplay or level design are flawed - on the contrary, bank robbery is brilliant. I just feel like after Burial at Sea DLCs to Bioshock Infinite, when the main story raised too many questions. Shortly: can not fully understand the motivation to kill the Outsider. At least we can avoid it, but the whole idea feels wrong for me.
But I still recommend to play it to anyone, maybe Arkane will get some money and make us a new immersive sim!
An interesting story with actions that I've not seen in other games. You can play it the way you want - in the shadows, a killer of only baddies, or as a slasher of all who get in your way. The game did stop a couple of times but I was in the same spot when it came back.
A pretty decent game with retro futuristic theme. takes place in a coastal city of Karnaca , you play as an assassin fighting to fulfill your mentors last wish .
The game it self is mostly based on stealth , to do your task without being seen or dropping any bodies , but well you can raise hell as there are plenty of alternative ways to achieve your goal in every mission .
short game though , it should have been a DLC to the second installment of Dishonored .
this game is just good in every way. absolutley love the stealth. Though the clockwork soldiers in the bank mission is a bit too dificult for me. they are just too fast for me to dodge or block. But with practice i could probably beat it. my conclusion- pretty good.
Nice graphics. Good story. Challenging but not too difficult. Nice ending.
very good graphics
Allows for creativity and just a general fun time
Some definite improvements, nerfing some of the most OP skills and introducing contracts. However no level's design really approaches the creativity of Clockwork Mansion, and recycling of levels both in this game and from the main game stings when it's already so short.
8/10
yea its a short outing and really does more for the gameplay than the story. It does tied up a bunch of plot stuff to mixed results. I got this in a bundle at a steep discount so I dont feel too strongly about this entry. Oddly enough even though its the same world as D2 I had a bunch of issues this time around, more so than D2, restarts fix them but you know, eh
Some abilities are reworked and you get a different toolset which was fun to mess around with since a lot more forgiving on that front but you can tell it started off as DLC considering how limited your options often are.
More dishonored is never a bad thing. This one has actually been surprisingly pretty damned good, on par with dishonored 1&2. The missions are long especially if you aim to do all the contracts as well. It's a no brainer if it's on sale! Also, runs like a dream compared to dishonored 2. Edit: Some of the best missions in the entire franchise, in perhaps the largest maps. 9/10
New enemies, powers, and weapons make this dlc (it's a short game, really) feel unique. The tone is darker, and it leans into the more interesting parts of the first two games' stories. Arkane's last great game, in my opinion.
I don't know how much we should have allocated to this DLC - as a separate game, it's not that big. But in general, it is a good addition to the story of a well-known secondary character who played an important role in the plot of the games. I recommend it, 8/10
Great game. the play through is wonderful, the graphics are beautiful, and the story is captivating.
The best DH campaign and it's not even close
Not as good as 2 but still fun. I think the new powers are really cool once you get used to them. I like the focus on bone charms and the hook mines are cool.
Not playable. Music shuts off and then the game crashes a couple of minutes later.
The first one was fun this one is alright. its just the inventory is very confusing like wtf is a hag pearl and why do i not have a volcanic gun when i just had one before i loaded in this time? Why is the health elixir not in my hotbar? just alot of things that make this game tedious. I would recommend for your dishonored fix but if your new to the series no.
Great game,Maybe a little shorter than I had expected, but I just love the Dishonored franchise,10/10
It really pains me to write this but i would avoid this one, if you really must know what the ending is, youtube exists.
What this "game" (overweight DLC) attempted to do was quickly wrap up commercially unsuccessful D2's plotholes and close Daud's and Billie's Storyline, unfortunately, not only did they rush the story, they also rushed the characters, removed about 75% of all powers (which is like, the main reason people dig this franchise lmao), removed the crossbow and pistol to give us a shitty gun arm to tie in with D1's Knife of Dunwall and finally tried to craft a coherent plot for an overweight DLC (They didnt even close Billie's story and asked a cheap author to publish dross, turning Billie into a fucking time cop for some reason (yes, im not kidding)). I expect this whole mess to be retconned when Arkane gets to D3, removing the Outsider might seem like a good idea at the time but im willing to bet money they now bitterly regret it, Dishonored without the Outsider raises difficult problems of narrative and gameplay (although Deathloop did solve them somewhat well so we'll see).
For what its worth the Dark vision Billie gets is nifty, however every other power is just... i mean theyre just really cheap knockoffs with drawbacks added for no good reason, making the game more tedious and lenghtier than needed. The gun arm thing is frankly useless, ive used it maybe 3 times in the whole game, why should i ever worry about spotting or stealth when chaos is gone? Who cares, have a million grenades thrown from a roof, cheers! The hopper grenades or whatever that replaces stun mines is a downgrade, stuns were invaluable in D2 to avoid spotting and disable clockworks, although tje bank level would probably become easier with them. The whole cult narrative is built up for three quarters of the game and then dropped like a dirty diaper into the proverbial memory hole bin, ive played this game for over 15 hours, and i can't even remember the name of the cult or what its members call themselves, the boneless? Something like that, who cares, theyre just a placeholder to pad out the last level, in order to slow your progression to access the greatest letdown of this game yet: the ending.
I understand that one of the writers for the game had been hired of off twitter for this DLC, and did write some interesting things about The Outsider's role which I had also come to understand (Her name is Hazel Monforton, she's actually a Doctor in Literature and her tweets can be found screened on the wiki, go read them!) However. Every Dishonored game requires powers to work, theyre what makes them. Removing The Outsider completely breaks any attempt to make a third one. I also strongly disliked the de-mystification of the Void, and having the Outsider's physical body stuck someplace, turning the Void in just any other old place. Why? Why do this? By that point i was so jaded by the whole ordeal I had breezed through the last mission in 15 minutes to get to the end and was utterly let down so i just pressed mouse5 and ended it. Safe to say I will probably not return to this game, ever.
every single dishonored game has changed the way you play in a major way and i love that.
It's basically a Dishonoured 2 DLC. A bit of a cash grab really. It's set in the same location as D2 which I think was a missed opportunity to explore some other place in The Isles. But again, 'twas a cash grab so that makes sense. I guess revisiting some of the places Corvo went in D2 was cool (a before and after sorta). You play as Megan from D2 who's actually Billie Lurk but you already knew that. Some different abilities which are a bit poo honestly but once you beat the game once, you can play NG+ with the original ones which is cool. You can talk to rats. That's cool. It's a bit short (12 Hrs) compared to D1/D2 (30 Hrs). It's Dishonored so if you like Dishonored then buy it because it's more of the same but I wouldn't pay full price for it since it's DLC sized (let's say £5-£9.99 quiditch tops). Performance was a bit trash though that's all I'll say.
It's more of the same, and I mean that in a good way. It's the familiar Dishonoured gameplay that fans know and love, and that's exactly what I wanted.
Death of the Outside streamlines the gameplay of the previous Dishonoured titles. There are only three void powers available and black market customisation is limited. It has a decent story with significant lore implications. The level design is predictably great, with the "Bank Heist" being amongst the best in the series. It's maybe too short for a stand alone game – there are only five missions.
As with all the Dishonored games - an absolutely amazing mood and ambiance! Brilliant and unique artwork. Fantastic world-building. And most of all, the game is so much fun, and everything works perfectly. No half-finished, full of glitches crap like what blizzard and other greedy studios would rip you off for these days.
they messed up this game royally opposed to the first 2 games. for the difficulty factor they exchanged quality of level design for quantity of enemies. for the stealth players they went and recreated the famous "blink" in a lazy and crappy way
they slept on the level design, as in the levels are too linear, there is only one way through the level and that is through the mass of guards, no more rooftops, no more balconies, no more air ducts, just a guard infected square and barren buildings on all sides
these new "powers" leave a lot to be desired, they don't help the stealth player get through unnoticed, nor do they allow the action player to get creative. most of the loot and equipment is just copy/pasted from the second game so there aren't even any new play styles to explore
It is nice to be back in the world and lore of Dishonored. Great game.
Like a lot of other people (maybe you), I'd played Dishonored and Dishonored 2 and loved them, but had Dishonored DOTO in my library for years without giving it a go.
I finally have and its been well worth it. The gameplay is more streamlined and smooth than ever before, and thanks to the regenerating mana, my stingy ass finally has been able to make use of all the powers without feeling guilty about wasting mana. The impersonate power was easily my favourite, that's one which I wish was in the earlier games. The weapon selection has been slightly altered and I enjoyed playing with hook mines.
My biggest criticism is that some parts of the levels felt like they didn't have too many choices. Like all Dishonored games, this game makes use of branching paths to objectives, but its definitely more linear than the other entries. For example (mild spoilers), if you wish to enter a certain building in the game, the only option (I could find) was knocking the door and pretending you were someone you were not. I looked around for a while for secret roof entrances, or basements, or windows, and I looked inside too, but I couldn't find any other ways. In earlier games, there would likely be 2 or 3 paths in.
Also, the honour system is gone, which is something I didn't realise until I got to the very end. That's fine with me, I played mainly non-lethally the whole game anyways.
The game was a little bit too short but i really loved it. Beauteful drsign and nice gameplay.
