Fast and yet strategic, Fallen Legion Rise to Glory actually caught me by surprise by it's "minimalistic" interface yet mechanically deep gameplay and beautiful presentation despite my wrongful expectations.
Basic gameplay is very easy to get into; button masher style game where one button corresponds to commanding a party member to attack, while also building combo bar to unleash their specials. But later on enemies start to get stronger and/or numerous and have to mind your parry timings. All this is presented with an approachable learning curve however, and the timing is rather lenient, so you'll eventually get there.
Aside of the satisfying gameplay you also have an amazing soundtrack and visuals accompanying your entire adventure. Pretty amazed how much production value it has. You're also offered lots and lots of choices that affects not just the battle you're on (creating a little roguelite-ish experience), but also the entire story; and even secrets; allowing some fresh view of the same tried story of two emperors fighting for the throne.
That said, as an RPG where you expect some kind of power progression, whatever progression you have felt rather minimal, and equipment pieces in form of gemstones can be rather tedious to grind since you have to do one stage completion to get them and even then whatever effects they have are randomly generated. Characters only level up (or actually, evolve) through story events, and even then they're locked behind choices, so you can easily screw your playthrough. The mechanical combat system is not without it's faults, as sometimes combat can get rather messy with enemies scoring chains of attacks and you can only parry once in a while; trying to get back your footing can be difficult. Enemy variation is also an issue, resulting in a repetitive feeling. Playing in short bursts is recommended.
Overall the whole satisfaction comes from the anticipation of what happens next from your series of choices and the good feeling of scoring perfect blocks of increasingly tricky attack behaviors. After all, only the truly skilled one can become Emperor.
Fallen Legion is heavily focused on real time defensive reaction; specifically in the form of perfect guard. You'll need to focus on the enemy animations to judge when is the exact time to start blocking to trigger it. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys that kind of mechanic.
I will also mention that I did not find it very easy to play this for long stretches of time at each sitting. Since you really need to be on point and alert, I found it somewhat exhausting.
This game has tons of potential... but its kind of wasted; One of those cases where I wish steam had a neutral recommendation.
Story seems interesting, and the oposing points of view are fun... but translation seems janky (Octavia being called THE octavia constantly for one)
But the thing that most irks me about this game is how its entirelly built around you parrying enemy attacks and avoiding damage... but 90% of the time you cant even see the enemy attacks because of screen effects, unclear animations, or blending into the background.
This wouldn't even be such an issue if timing wasn't extremely tight, no space for you to be even one second early or late... or if enemy spells werent a thing; Spellcasters are often in the back where you cant directly hit them, and sometimes even hitting an enemy will not stop their spellcasting, with some spells just being downright impossible to block.
You also cant hit enemies out of their attacks 90% of the time... but they can hit your characters out of their attacks, the timing issue is made even worse by enemies sometimes attacking in quick sucession, to the point where getting a perfect guard against the first will leave you open to the second enemy anyway, due to a small cooldown period for your guard.
The presentation is also, sadly, really cheap and detracts from the story, everything is presented as your character auto running to the right, never stopping, even villages, with your decisions being very vague cards that are usually one word, with you only finding out what you actually picked later, when it comes back to bite you.
Despite all that, the story seems interesting and gameplay can be fun in the very very rate times it clicks (usually when you're fighting a boss or other such enemies that you can actually learn the patterns off... and dont constantly cast spells you cant stop at your back roll.)
Sadly its too late for me to get a refund now, so I'll likely try to finish it, but yeah, I'd recommend only getting this one if its on a big discount, knowing what you're getting into.
Edit: oh, and be warned that loading screen text just downright has spoilers, it also has overall world lore mixed in... so yeah.
Picked this up on a sale long ago and forgot about it in the libary. Should have left it there. It's a classic example of why Indi games are total hit or miss for the right/wrong person.
I only gave it like 15 minutes of my time and left. Terrible controls, super hectic, I died in the introduction mission because I kept pressing wrong buttons. The game has voice acting only for one sentence and then goes back to written text only. Can't mouse click on things, can't skip the stuff you already watched after dying. No thanks.
Won't refund, but will not buy from this developer again.

Shame it doesn't have a turn-based mode like VP, this game would have garnered a lot more attention to players like me who miss VP.
I can't appreciate the character specials because I am busy watching the enemy timing to block, if you don't block you get a grade that tells you, you suck.
And in the later levels if you don't block you die.
It's a huge plus though that they've updated the game even though it probably didn't live up to their expectation.
Definitely get it with a sale(I don't think it deserves the full price it's asking), you may enjoy the fast paced gameplay, you'll definitely enjoy the art.

Felt fresh in its presentation/gameplay style, is fast paced, linear, and upbeat through and through. Can't say that I care for the writing, but the combat and choice system that's tied to some secrets are pretty good. Parrying may be a little difficult to do when the battles get chaotic for some folks, but I love spastic and chaotic games so no problem here. I will say that for those seeking a super casual experience, be weary as it may take a little getting used to parrying if you're not good with timing based mechanics.
Lastly, I love the art style. That's it.
bad controller, bad translate, too much bug on this game
Without a doubt this game was a pleasant and enjoyable surprise! While it was obviously apparent that the title had similar styling and game-play flow to something like "Valkyrie Profile", the challenge and combat balance proved to be of sufficiently stiff level. Make no mistake, even on the default difficulty setting before any NewGame+, this game can be HARD. After having completed both story paths it's become apparent that besides the aforementioned NewGame+, there's a One Life Mode available with options to upgrade your party members to their highest potential. The narrative is pretty deep for a game of this 2D style. The devs even include a nice card based bonus system that adds some flavor to the story that has you making decisions that shapes the unfolding tale. Sadly, these decisions don't lead to vastly different endings for both characters. As for the audio, the soundtrack is sparse in terms of the number of distinct tracks, but absolutely brilliant. There are certainly some adrenaline pumping tracks on here when fights get dicey. The game also has some voice acting that is generally well done and in keeping with the fantasy story on show. To elaborate, the game's lore has many words some which seem Celtic in tone and spelling which,when pronounced, coincide with the real world Welsh (the male Laendur's voice actor brings this out well I think) and Irish (probably what the accent the female voice actor playing Cecille was going for). A very fitting and appreciated bit of effort in my opinion.
All in all, this is a great game to come out from what I assume is a fledgling independent game studio. A meaty and substantial product presented in a small package and one that's clearly been made with a lot of passion. At the very least this little gem should be broadcast a bit more as more people need to try it out with the caveat that for new players starting out, the early levels can prove to be incredibly challenging.

No Mouse support. All actions and menus are controlled with keys. Enter is F, Cancel is D but you use this also for the attacks of the party members. The game requires quick hacking of several keys in order to controll the actions of the party members. Too fast for me to enyou and use strategie. No pausing, no slowing down of speed possible.
This is a pretty good fix of VanillaWare-esque Valkyrie Profile. I'm surprised it flew under the radar for quite some time. I was pretty sure people were looking for similar titles for the above mentioned game.
Well, that's out of the way. Let's talk about the game.
Fallen Legion+ is packed with 2 sides of the story. You have the (not)Tactician, (not)Robin of the Rebellion and other side of the (rally)spectrum, There's the princess of a deteriorating empire.
I've only played Flames of Rebellion but I think I've played enough to give a review.
Gameplay wise, it plays almost exactly like Valkyrie profile. Exception being there's no turns so if you're coming from VP, you'll tend to have a habit of going apeshit which is bad most of the time since combat is real time. You would want to pay attention to your enemies because guarding is a thing. When you attack, you cannot guard immediately since they are stuck in their attacking animation. So attack sparingly. Plus points if you manage a perfect block which nulls damage, gives an extra AP which is a godsend on slow exemplars AND staggers the enemy that you blocked. You are also rewarding for your hard work with a combo meter which increases your damage the more chains you do. All in all, simple mechanics with high reward if you get good.
Art direction is pleasing to look at, since it's very reminiscent/inspired of Vanilla ware's art style. I can see whoever the art team are that they have good taste. The music is also giving me Valkyrie profile 1 vibes with its wild tracks to it's energetic-mellow tunes. In other words, It's very good. Especially, Golden remains.
My only complaints with the game is that there's this bug where some projectiles are invisible, like spectral gash and the wasted potential of adding other characters. Could've been a nice addition of have side exclusive exemplars like for Flames of Rebellion, Antoinette or Bryn.
TLDR, All in all. It's a very underrated game right now. It does not deserve the mixed status it has right since most of the game breaking bugs from it's rocky launch of been mostly patched. Please consider buying the game. It's slowly becoming one of my favourite games.

The game play is good, but has too many bugs , sometimes the game freeze after defeat the monsters, has some wrong text description (Zulfiqar skills desc. show as windchester, etc) hope to fix those bugs
Great game untill you get stuck with invisible enemies that cannot be attacked or your hud vanishes or any other game breaking technical bug.

+ No grinding, this game is skill based. So you must learn the enemy pattern and some enemy have tricky pattern!
+ The artwork so HD, I like the art style and the direction.
Nice fresh gameplay and mechanic, BUT, because of that you must give more forgiving tutorial at first. I even doesn't know what i am doing at first and must repeat first chapter 3 times. for example this game more like timing than rush, please introduce block mechanic, and some combo mechanic at first. Some bug occured when i finish 3rd chapter, game stack but music still playing.

I'm a fan of Mintsphere and played Trigger Knight long ago. They had said that will realease Trigger Princess as their next game but it's appeared they change the title AND I WAS LIKE FINALLY ITS HERE, AFTER MANY YEARS OF WAITING, THE GAME IS HERE.
Darrel and Xanthe do an amazing job bringing life to the characters. Whoever directed this, great job!!! Got this on PS4 and again on Steam cause why not I ain't got no VITA but my laptop is portable.
Definitely recommended! Lots of frantic action, split-second guards, diverse enemies, skills, combos, boosts, cancellations, one-shots, mass wipes, restarts, read again, 'lots of action'.
No direct control over character movement, but full control over attacks and positioning. Little custimization in shape of gems (three at most), and a way to influence heroes' growth. Very indirect and totally obscure but nevertheless quite pleasant.
Hidden skills, New Game+ with Even More Punishment™, S-ranks to obtain, etc, etc.
All with beautiful graphics and nice music score. And there's even a nice dramatic plot (pretty transparent but nice to follow).
And the iconic system of choice with some immediate benefits, and obscure and totally unforeseen consequences.
it's been a long time i haven't play an RPG like this,
truly a Valkyrie Profile successor, fucking love this game

Wow! I didn't think I would end up playing it this long in one continuous session but it was really addicting.
The game itself plays completely different than what it might look like. There is an interesting zen-like rhythm to it that is actually quite relaxing when you get into it. Blocking took me quite a bit to get used to. But it worked out pretty well. The story narrative is interesting, and I enjoy how it doesn't disrupt the game play, and actually alters it. Art style is awesome and the voice acting is great too. It's one of those games you really need to sit down and just invest some time. It grows more complex with the item collection and challenges. One life mode, I haven't dared to play yet and honestly, have no idea how anyone is able to do it. This game is pretty damn challenging.
