Could have been very good - even great - Panzer General follow up with neat additional features, but the main campaign is impossible to finish due to bugs.
Not recommended.
IMO this game, or at least the idea of it, is better than games like PanzerKorps and other copy-pasta oversimplified Slitherine wargames, primarily because it actually models officers for its "units". It adds a lot to immersion, and makes you feel like a commander of men and not mindless drones.
The ability to customize your units with attachments et al also adds to the feeling of units being "alive" and unique instead of clones.
However the developer gave up on it too soon. Should have expanded on this formula with sequels and DLCs. And of course, improved production values (UI, graphics etc) which are quite atrocious.
We need more wargames like this one.. Tired of so many wargames and military strategy games ignoring the role of Individual leaders - officers, captains, generals et al, which is a fundamental and decisive element of warfare.
It's hard to go wrong for $3! This is very similar to Panzer General, and has a fairly easy learning curve. It isn't going to set the gaming world on fire, but I have seen far worse!
If military war gaming is your thing without bogging down in micromanagement this is a good one
Didn't enjoy this game at all, I really wanted to like it being a massive fan of panzer corps. I would't waste you time with it, panzer corps does everything better.
Decent game in the old Panzer General vein of hex based wargaming with (during the campaigns) a set of core units that can be enhanced, improved and gain experience (or get blown up if you are careless), as well as giving you extra units to control in most missions during the campaign.
Their is a brief set of tutorials to give you a basic overview of how to play (plus a pdf manual in English and German if you really want to go there), a somewhat introductory campaign with the British of 5 missions, then a decently sized German campaign of 20 missions going from the Afrikakorps introduction to the theatre following history at first, but then more speculatively eventually on to Suez, if you keep winning anyway.
During the campaigns there is a nice range of victory conditions - with the normal victory just taking the appropriate locations usually, then a brilliant victory which requires a more varied approach - some require a second location (or set of locations) to be taken as well, or for the enemy to be completely decimated (set amount of strength points destroyed in game terms), or even things such as protecting your Italian allies or clearing key minefields to allow supply lines to pass through the area, etc. A third layer of victory conditions is OKH favour, which requires a third objective to be achieved, if you do it gives you tokens that can be cashed in for extra resources/units to be made available to you.
Overall it is a nice update on the PG theme, although it would be nice if had a larger range of missions/campaigns to play through.
Got this one on sale for 3 Euros and for that small money I really got much game.
Basically it's a Panzer General/Panzer Corps clone (turn based hex field strategy game) focusing on the North Africa Campaingn of WWII. Missions play rather fast (somtimes in only 11 turns). Mechanics are similar but to some extend also different from Panzer General/Panzer Corps. I like the idea of upgrading my units to divisions and the associated modification options. Playing this one you have to approach a bit different than in above mentioned games, so it's not 100% the same.
Dislikes are that the graphical presentation is rather outdatet, the more or less useless tutorial missions, the missing troop diversities and that the game has some minor bugs.
Alltogether it's an entertaining (but rather short) strategy game if you like Panzer General/Panzer Corps, altough don't expect it to be as captive as those mentioned games. I recommend to buy it on sale.
This game won't launch, have 400 other games that do....
I love Panzer General and Panzer Corps. I don't like this game.
The units move like funny comic objects in a style some games use as a main visual stylistic device for object motion, and I hate it. The battle animation is good: Instant mayhem the millisecond you click on the enemy unit.
The rules and the logical structure outside the game map are good. But it could not convince me and I cannot really pinpoint why. And I don't want to play it again to check out why. Maybe it is not evil enough for a war game. It feels like a happy little cute war game for big children. (although the game mechanic clearly is not for casual gaming and instead rather complex, I know...)
It is an okay software procuct. You have to test it for yourself. I bet some people will really like it.
But please allow me to not recommend it to anyone :(
Great game!
This is really a meh for me, as the game has some really good features totally offset by some big cons. It is worth it if found for around $7 or so, but I definitely would not pay more than $10 for it/
Pros:
-Brigade(50) and Division(100) size units
-Ability to attach support companies to units to specialize by adjusting certain unit stats
-The leader system that allows spending resources to get different level leaders
-These three add a really nice dimension and strategy layer to the game
-'Fresh' new missions that are not just the same old Afrika Corps missions we are used to (those are there too)
-I like that the infantry of the different countries actually wear slightly different uniforms.
-Battle predictions and results are better implemented than similar games of the genre
Cons:
-The Engrish in briefings is TERRIBLE, so the point where sometimes it is hard to know objectives
-There are a lot of small bugs. Units will randomly not be able to attack for a turn, OKW favor points system broken and they don't always show up, units will be 'damaged' but will not lose any strength, etc.
-The 'AI' is a complete moron
-The user interface is bad. A LOT of wasted menu space, inconsistent tooltips, minimal unit action options, it is impossible to know how to use unit special abilities without digging through hints and instructions pages
Like I said, the game is a fun enough way to waste a few hours for a few bucks, but it doesn't hold a candle to Order of Battle or Panzer Corps.
I have 37 hours of play at the time of this note. Enjoyable play at that.
The game is $5. People drop $20 on a 2 hour movie.
Its a fun game.
It needs more attention granted, but what else gives you a work weeks worth of fun for $5?
Play this until your bored and then graduate to Panzer Corp. Now there is a game.
I am writing this review because the negative reviews the game has received of late are really not deserved. This is not a modern graphics intensive game, but anybody buying the game should have realized this.
The game is a more detailed and granular panzer general type game and IMO it is done very well with some creative game design that adds more 'realism' and unit and army customization along with a more complex and rewarding combat system. I have always wanted to see a game like this made and thus far am very happy with the results. I am not that far long, but if the designers decide to make more games in this series (and I hope they will), I would be a happy and willing buyer.
Anybody who liked panzer general or panzer corps but always wanted more details and customization will likely enjoy this game. Some people may not be able to deal with older graphics, but most wargamers don't and won't care. Anyone who decides not to buy based on graphics or interface is missing out IMO, this is a very fun game.
Was hoping for a decent turn-based wargame when I bought this. I'm a big fan of Panzer Corps, and Panzer General before that but didn't expect Army General to be the same but did expect something in a similar vein. Army General takes an age to load for no obvious reason. Once it loads I can't comment too much on the gameplay as it fell at the first hurdle. The units are way too small, making the game unplayable. How could the developers not realise this and at least provide an option for different scales? I check for updates occasionally in case the developers have corrected this glaring oversight but it looks like they stopped supporting it once it was released. Very poor.
Play won't launch. No refund or explanation. Steam provides no support. Company website likewise lists no e-mail for support.
its ok game a little overpriced i would wait untill on sale if you can But the games allright
