I can see why so many love this game. It is a melancholy game. And, romance is secondary and can be turned off in the options. So, be warned. I am highly impressed and have enjoyed the 2 routes I have finished so far. I went onto the next game to finish the specific character's stories and found that amazing as well. You do really need both games for the full story. Edo Blossoms is the next one.
Is it only the first half of the story, yes. You kinda know that going in if you read the description, reviews, or look up the "before you buy" information you would want to know. If you are unaware of this fact before reading this, the second half of the story is in Edo Blossoms which is also available.
A classic otome game that I think ever otome game fan needs to play
One of the best VN games ever. Perfect if you just want to fall in love and cry or something.
Looove this game, there's so much extra content than in the anime (obviously, i suppose), and i feel so warm and fuzzy playing. The characters are so likeable. Only gripe is I wish Chizuru had more of her own independent journey, though i guess that would defeat the whole point of it being an otome game. 10/10

I played the original game before I played Kyoto Winds and Edo Blossoms. And I also watched the anime before playing these two.
Hakuoki has been my favourite otome/shoujo/josei for the longest time, and I'm just really happy to always have more of it!

historical visual novel packed full of politics and agony that just happens to have hot samurai men what else could a girl ask for???
I've played visual novel-que games for years before my first major title since my otaku awaking as a teen, mainly those online pay-as-you-go ones--My Candy Love, for example. Hakuoki was one of the ones that really sparked my love for this genre of game. Now, I haven't played all of the men's routes yet, but what I have is AMAZING. If you are just getting into vns or you're looking for an easy, fun read with an interesting story and hot men, this will be prefect for you.
I'm obsessed with these guys...period.
I recommend this game because it has very strong points, and Hakuouki as a franchise is definitely worth it, but it has issues that really take away from the enjoyment.
The issues
- Well it's only half of a game. I think it was a mistake to split the game in two, because in this first installment you are left with a lot of unresolved plot threads, unanswered questions, and an ending so open it doesn't feel like an ending at all. (Because it's not ; it's the middle of the story.)
- It's not an actual PC port. I'm glad to be able to play on PC, but the UI shows only the original commands and does not adapt to keyboard, mouse or controller. You have to figure out the controls yourself. If you play on fullscreen the image will probably be blurry because PC screen resolutions aren't supported. Play in windowed mode if you have this issue.
- While it's good to have an English version, the translation is terrible. Speech is overly interpreted (making it unnecessary vulgar and misogynistic) with a few sentences being complete inventions, some are just plain wrong (they mean the opposite of what is said), there are typos (missing letters, missing words, misspellings)... A lot of sentences don't feel very natural in English either.
The good points
- The game is very good at making you feel emotions. Even just the prologue will make you nostalgic for a time a place you don't even know yet. Everything tugs at your heartstrings, from conflicting loyalties to reticent betrayals to tragically unbreakable friendships... I think it's the game's strongest point.
- The music is great, and its use greatly enhances the gameplay. The headquarters music will feel like home to you. The complete silence will impart how scary a scene is. Another stong point.
- The voice acting is amazing, with great voice actors <3
- The illustrations are beautiful, especially the CGs.
- Despite the high number of routes and several mandatory events, each story is very different and each character fulfills a different fantasy. There is definitely value in playing all the routes, even if a character does not interest you at first.
- The game teaches you an incredible amount of things about the bakumatsu and the Shinsengumi, which is nice if you don't know anything, and great if you're already a fan of either.
All in all more good points than bad, but be sure to play Edo Blossoms too in order to get the whole story !
i love dating anime men
I wanted to do a good amount of routes before making a review and this is it: I really like the game, especially when they have the 2nd game out to continue on with the story and choice of guy! Each one is slightly different OR A HUGE difference on information about you and who you are! (I forgot the girls name you play but hopefully you get it) I like the art a lot and the story! I say if you like stories building up and getting to know the guy before romancing this is for you and I think you should try it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this one for a couple of reasons.
The art style is fantastic, the soundtrack is great and the story goes from intriguing to wholly captivating at a reasonable rate. This games story starts out seemingly mellow and slowly turns deeper and more mysterious and I found myself having trouble walking away (Needless to say, I lost some sleep through this story, oops).
Naturally, you have to play through all the routes to get the entire story, but since each character is unique (both good and bad quirks) it never really gets dull.
I found myself enjoying the camaraderie and banter amongst the guys enough to feel like part of the group, which is unusual for me in most games, but it was a welcomed bonus enjoyment. I got to care for the groups fate more than the individual romantic relationships, meaning the overarching story is better than any of the person-to-person stories.
Character note: For real, some characters are quite abusive towards the main character, to say the least. Granted, none of the male characters in this game are unscathed, they have been through and seen some s**t, so psychologically their behaviours make sense. Doesn't make it okay though.
It does however add a lot of depth to the characters, which is good.
Unfortunately the main character is by far the weakest one in the entire game. She is literally incapable of doing anything else besides being supportive (and even then she has no idea how or what to do) and getting dunked on unless someone else steps up to protect her. She is by far the most annoying and most forgettable part of the entire game..
The overarching story is a very bitter sweet one, after all the setting is a historically grim era of war and conflict. Naturally, certain things hit me straight in the feels which made this game an unforgettable experience to me and I found myself saddened when it ended. But eventually all good stories must come to an end. (This one happens to have a continuation in Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms, yay)
The overarching story is captivating and fantastic! The romance routes for some characters is meh, others are okay but I've had better. For the price tag (8,19 euros as of writing this) I can easily recommend it. The soundtrack is great too!

Sometimes you have to indulge yourself and replay that trash otome game from your early teens.

I enjoyed playing this a lot.
I didn't play all routes/ unlock all different endings yet but overall game was quite nice.
