Memories of Celceta isn't the best Ys game but it's extremely underrated. The fixed-camera 3d games (Seven/Celceta) are both really underappreciated imo. The gameplay is extremely fun and the story is good, there are complaints about the abrupt ending, but honestly to me it's not nearly as egregious as some people say. It still feels like a complete story, there is just no afterward/goodbye like in some of the other games.
Don't skip this OR Seven when playing the series. I played them both last because everything I read had me less excited about them as others, but I had just as much fun with these 2 games as I did with the rest of the series.
Normal is way too easy though, if you play this after Oath/Origin, don't start on Normal or you'll be bored pretty quickly. Shame about the difficulty being all over the place in this series, I really wish I started this on Nightmare. Guess I'll be re-playing it soon

Japan's infamous amnesiac is at it again on yet another adventure. This dude really needs to stop doing drugs and forgetting everything. The story is more or less the same as any other Ys adventure and the combat is exactly what you expect from the series.

Maybe some see the repetitive nature of these games as a bad thing but I like that there are some series you can count on for sticking to what they do best. If you enjoy action RPGs then you will almost certainly love this!

Good game overall with excellent story (for 99% of the playtime) and vivid characters. Battle system is mostly fluent as well although I never used guard for the entirety of the game (I used dodge only). Exploration is cool and intriguing and the environment and music add perfectly to game-play immersion.

Nevertheless, let's get to the frustrating parts that I have encountered.

First, the video of the game freezes often (like around once per hour) while the game is running on my device. The audio, game mechanics and UI are still working while the video freezes so I can save the actual game state with the right sequence of keys). The only method to fix the video is to close the game window and restart the game. This is very likely not a performance issue of my device as my fans are not roaring and the temperature is not fuming, and the freezing and crashing occur no matter how high or low I set my game performance settings to be.

There are also a number of softlocking bugs that I have encountered.
One is on the sprinting section on the Tower of Prominence. Reaching certain areas of the map resulting in the character in control being stopped by an invisible wall and unable to move in front or sideways while the sprinting animation plays. Releasing the sprint key causes the sliding down animation to play but the character is stuck in place. This can only be solved by reloading a save.
The other is at the golden section of Iris. Upon exiting one of the portals after finishing the monsters inside, one of the characters of the party is visually inside the portal with a perpetual walking animation and the game ui is non-functional when this happens. It is only solved when I exit and restart the game and change my party and the order of doing the doors.

Furthermore, the last section of the game after the penultimate boss feels really underwhelming. There is an epic build-up of story scenes and an entire long map section dedicated to reaching the final boss, which is extremely unimpressive and not really difficult either compaired to other boss fights in the game (even the duel with Duren in Comodo feels more challenging and impressive). The final boss only has one stage, lasts less than 2 minutes, and does not leave room for any exhibition of "the power of friendship" of the playable cast to be the polar opposite to the epic mood. After that there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in terms of an epilogue and Adol do not even see and talk to his teammates again AT ALL. This feels really outrageous for a story-rich JRPG with good characterisation of its characters. because any player will undoubtedly want more stories at this point and the game says, "No unfortunately".

Hence, it is unquestionably a good game, but one with gameplay issues here and there, and an absent ending.

The gameplay, combat and dungeons are great. The characters are funny. One of my favorite Ys games. The story however is just ok.

Love jrpgs with a big focus ob exploring unknown areas. Ys memories of celceta is so much fun to me. Combat is fine. Not amazing but decent. Music is as good as you expect from an ys title. Story and sidequests are fun.

Do you like Sekiro but instead of flowing combat and dynamic fights you just parry one move and win? This is the game for you!

6/10 game, better than many, far worse than it's predecessors. In comparison to other Ys games? Garbage. Just a generic anime action RPG with boring combat and a forgettable story. At least the music is still good.

Cool game that's a bit of a slow burn for the first half. Story gets set up for a while but once the game opens up and you have freedom to explore and have fun, the game is peak.

If you are a fan of the Ys games, just go ahead and buy this or play it if you've already bought it. The gameplay is satisfying, the characters offer diversity of play style, and the dungeons are mostly OK. You might need to a guide from time to time, but it wasn't super frustrating or anything.

If you are new to the Ys series and have never played on, check out VIII, IX, or X for a more modern experience and come back to earlier titles like this one if you find yourself wanting more.

Ys: Memories of Celceta may not have been the best one. I played it on hard since I heard it was not very challenging.

Its gameplay is excellent, but its extremely poor balancing (the later characters are like leagues above the starting party), poor difficulty pacing (enemies later on fall into two categories: huge hp pools or huge damage.) by the end of the game you will find enemies who have a big HP pool but can barely damage you or normal HP pools but somehow deal 400+ per hit out of your 1500-2000 hp.

Just Guard and Perfect Dodges come back, this time way easier to use the guard part. Nothing much to say.

The weapon upgrade system is kinda wack. Not in a bad way but feels like an after thought.

The bosses were all quite uninspired with not great movesets. I can't remember a single memorable boss... Just like in Seven. But this feels worse, because many attacks seem to come out of nowhere. The normal enemies early were fine but later on they started having attacks that also come out of nowhere without any kind of buildup or animation...

The characters: You play as 6 characters. They all appear on the store page so its not spoiler.
Adol: The protagonist with only 1 sword this time instead of the usual 3 types. He is overall fine and consistent.
Duren: The new martial artist instead of Dogi. He is fine but his normals despite being faster than Dogi in SEVEN, his skills are not great as they have either buildup or move him all over the place.
Karna: The first girl of this game, and another Aisha from SEVEN copy paste ranged character.... blegh. I don't like how range characters feel on Ys. She is too safe to play but her skills are very bad compared to Aisha's.
Ozma: The worst character in the game. Slow to attack, bad skills. I only used him for the dungeon he was in and forgot he existed because I couldn't stand how he played. The only thing I can say positive about him is that he can do 2 attacks while swimming.
Calilica: Upgraded Duren, cute girl with a giant magical mace. Has good aoe skills. And the Thunder Summon skill that summons 3 small drones that attack when you do is really good.
Frieda: The absole best character in the game, being slash like Adol she has long reaching fast normals, strong aoe skills and ranged.

This game also lets you play without Adol in the party unlike in SEVEN, which is welcome in case you wanna level other characters.

The OST was also kinda mid for an YS game, which isn't bad, as its good but not great or amazing.

The story only interesting point is how it connects to Napishtism and Adol's backstory and reason for exploring.

As for the voice acting, its whatever. Both japanese and english do good perfromances. however I don't know why they even bothered to have voice acting when barely anything is voice acted. Random dialogs are voice acted but not the important ones, the final boss revealing the plan? The final encounter? no voice. This feels extremely half assed, Felghana was the last game where they tried voice acting. I'm not asking for every single dialog to be fully voice acted but you don't just have voices for 2 full dialogs and then suddenly mute the character it just makes it feel cheap vs just having text.

Good game overall.
Just not great, which by Ys standards thats not bad at all considering the previous games were very good. It definitely feels a bit half-assed compared to the previous Ys games as if it was rushed.

This is the third Ys game I have played so far and I have yet to be disappointed. I am trying to play them in order so far I have played Ys 1 and 2 and now Celceta. Minus one or two little issues like getting the map fully explored, even though it looked like it was completed I have not had much trouble with the game.

Some achievements I am surprised I didn't get like all of the gathering ones and destroying all objects. I don't see any I have missed, but then again after the first Ys game I knew there are going to be achievements across this series I just will not get. Only the first one will I have hit them all. It is surprising to miss ones like that though.

Overall I find the game to be pretty fun and it does have replay value for achievements (if that is your thing) group setup challenges, or if you just want to play it again at a higher difficulty. The music again like all of the Ys games was enjoyable the story wasn't too bad, nothing spectacular but nothing id have to run and tell people all about. I do feel like I could go back one day and play this again since it has this old yet newly polished feel to it. I enjoy Adol and cannot wait to see more of his adventures. I am astounded it took me so long to find out about Ys but so far there has not been one bad game in the lot. Money well spent. ^_^

one of the best RPGs

A really fun ARPG
The combat is solid
The story while nothing amazing is pretty fun to follow and enjoyed the characters
On normal its pretty much on the easy side
The 2nd half was rush or weirdly paced
Overall its pretty fun

One of my life best decision was dropping metaphor and playing this Magnum opus

While I much prefer the elemental weapon combat system in Naphistim, Origin and Felghana, the world map and exploration in Celceta felt like a step up for the series, not that I minded its previous incarnations. This games overworld map is a little more open, but still a far cry from something like Zelda.

The graphics are a step up as well and a very welcome change that makes everything look more slick.

The soundtrack in this one had a number of memorable, energetic tracks as well.

Combat is the same as Ys Seven, button mashy party system that is serviceable but kind of dull. Like in Ys Seven, jump has been replaced with dash. You use your dash and block to evade in combat.

As always with these Ys games, I end up holding down the fast forward button on the dialogue, as it is anime writing and drags on a bit. Like every Ys game, it's heavily story driven but IMO not the worst of its kind and does lend itself to the epic/grand feel of the adventure.

Great action rpg!

Good game. Won't write a proper review til later but:

Story was REALLY captivating, sucks that the ending was so abrupt that it felt like they ran out of money and couldn't find any loose change under the sofa to even try to make an ending. I loved the characters, the world building and all-- but it doesn't matter if you just slap a THE END after accomplishing a Lord of the Rings ending. I have NO IDEA what happened during the after-events of the game or what happened to the rest of the group.

Combat was decent, I think it was my least favourite element of the game. I just parry spammed like sekiro for most end game bosses and just attacked til boss died.

I do recommend the game tho cuz I loved the adventure. The side quests were all fun and a lot of them made me laugh. The characters were great and the forest that the game was based around had a lot of depth! The music was good too.

Personally not Falcom's best (I've played YS 1 to Oath in Fehlgana so far) but it does certain things very well.

Pros:
1. In my humble opinion this game's side quests are 2 notches above many other open world jrpgs on the market. I don't know why. They're just wacky sometimes and give you funny options where other games could just implement auto-path and you probably would be fine for almost every side quest.

2. Karna is hot

Cons:
1. This feels alot more repetitive than Ys1, OiFehlgana, and even Origins somehow. It's kinda a A-B, B-C, C-D with story beats that don't really veil the video gamey progress, at least for me.

2. Normal feels very easy. Bosses felt pretty trivial compared to the dark souls lite the chronologically former games were.

3. You don't JUST play as the fast red DOOMGUY guy cutting through enemies with the power of goddesses and anime on his side. Likely a personal con but any character slower than sonic doesn't feel satisfying to play for me in a Ys game. You can just play as Adol though, and not focus on certain character's skills, unless you have OCD like me.

Fun game, Map completion can be annoying and some puzzles are a stopgap in a amazing game. 8,5/10

It's Ys so it's good.

the Climax was fantastic, with a fairly strong narrative overall. Gameplay is quick and enjoyable, and some of the setpieces look quite nice despite the dated graphics

Play using a controller or you will end up opening inventory and stuffs in the middle of a battle.

- So fun to play, rating 95/100

This is the sequel to Oath in Felghana... and it isn't near as good despite the engine upgrade. It is still a fantastic game, more rpg-focused than Oath to be sure - and this is one of the earlier implementations of the "party" system where if you hit monsters with the wrong party member suffer around 20% normal damage until you switch characters - personally I never found that aspect fun and they continued this system into modern Ys (8+). The different characters are pretty fun but modern Falcom has always had difficultly balancing the game around it in a way that makes it as fun as the original action games.

Unlike Oath which is more straight action, this game is more about mapping out stuff and leans in a bit more in the RPG side - that map will get you obsessed with 100%ing it.

Pros
+ Characters look great graphically. Bosses are mixed bag, but even those never look bad.
+ Large map to explore. Make sure you hug all the walls to complete it
+ Lots of chests and harvest locations to collect and map out
+ Decent game feel and combat is often fun. Not as good as Oath as forced characters switching is great.
+ Skills are great (even if they take too long to master)
+ Good enemy variety and bosses are unique and fun with a few exceptions
+ None of the chests or map/harvest completion are missable, which is good since some of them are really tricky to find. Pretty much everything with the map is a positive in general, except for having to hug all the walls for 100%.
+ The port is pretty solid. Falcom was originally a pc-first company, and this was the around the time they switched to being console-first, so this is a port. Played 44 hours so far and never had a crash or hang.

Neutral
= This is a remake of Ys IV from the PC Engine, which this remakes pretty much every song from. However, the original OST of the PC Engine version was almost always better. The Oath OST was better, but that was from a different Falcom era.
= Flash guard/dodge are very acquired tastes, and to be honest I never really liked them. Once you do new game+ in nightmare mastering these will be required. Flash dodge in particular stops everything on screen for a couple seconds which, while fun at first, will get old fairly quickly.

Cons
- There's no way to "run" on the map, which later will get annoying. You get an item that lets you move slightly faster in the late game, but with that they gave monsters special attacks when you use the item to slow you down (like lizards knocking you down with their tongue or monkey kings yelling and stunning you when you "run" with the item).
- Combat isn't as tight as Oath, and the bosses aren't as tightly designed. Also if you expect the final boss to be anywhere near as epic as Oath you'll need to readjust your expectations... a lot.
- "Some" bosses only become vulnerable at completely random times, and by that I mean I just ran around once for 10 minutes which wasn't exactly fun.
- Companion AI is often bad, frustratingly so once you get into higher difficulties. This will make you rage once you do nightmare.
- The story isn't great, relies on a lazy trope, and doesn't kick into gear until about 80% into the game. Even then, its nothing to write home about, and it isn't the epic somewhat dark story of some Ys games.

Great gameplay as always, as one can expect from a Ys game.
Good characters too

Pros:
~The gameplay is pretty fast-paced and more than just a buttom-spammer
~Weakness system encourages you to play with more than just MC smashing everything
~Each character has a distinct playstyle so you can suit your needs
~Storyline is pretty interesting, I like the history-driven exploration

Cons:
~The music is good. Usually that's a pro, but Falcolm tends to produce exceptional music tracks, so falling short of that is technically a con
~Some characters are just way stronger than others
~Enemies respawn way too fast, some might like this but I don't

Overall:
It's a decent game. Not really my cup of tea, young me would've loved it but I really enjoyed the story elements. I think it's worth it on a sale
