Somehow missed the fact there were no choices from the store page. This, plus the clueless MC and occasionally obvious foreshadowing made me want to punch a large hole in my computer and also rip my skin off.
Other than this, overall art and writing are on point!
Worth playing if you hate yourself or if you like kitty cats :3
I liked the game. A vn with a twist that at times it seemed very predictable.(i was able to predicate it) but still was a bit surprised because why would you forget someone you are close to/love/care about. Still left some unanswered questions for me.
Saw the twist coming but hoped that I was wrong, felt physically ill after making it to the end. 10/10, can't say most games have done that to me.
Absolutely visceral writing.
This VN plays on emotions that most like to ignore, and the game makes you feel as if you're descending into depravity alongside the protagonist.
10/10, would flirt with eldritch horrors beyond human comprehension again
This game was definitely disturbing. I'm still in shock after finishing it because what the actual fuck. Deadass felt like I was gonna throw up.
Writing was amazing and kept me engaged all throughout. It being a kinetic VN was no issue at all and I actually prefer it that way. This game totally knocked it out of the park. I loved the darker themes, the banter between characters, and the fact Robin is such a fucking doormat. Like good god man, could you be any less of a piece of shit?
I love how he was written. His guilt yet lack of true care towards his family as he elopes with some young girl was not only awful in it's own right, but the way he consistently makes horrible decisions makes you feel a whole load of things towards him as a character. Pity, anger, disappointment, disgust, sometimes even guilt on his behalf. The writing for Sally was also great. The way she was written really showed how much she hates him, but also how she still has a soft spot and still truly loves him. It also built contempt for her very quickly and showed why Robin hates her. I hated her from the start but felt worse and worse for that as the plot continued. Soon, all I could feel was pity for her. The setup for the story was good, nothing felt too repetitive to read and soon I was pretty hooked on the plot and excited for more.
There's fanservice, and it was pretty good both art and writing wise. Robin's unfaithful behavior and enabling his increasingly toxic side relationship was surprisingly fun to watch unfold and it only made the fanservice better, especially as the writing made things feel more and more risky.
Buy the game. Indulge in it. It's worth it.
This VN stuck with me. It's spooky, it's electric with passion, and it's well written.
Neat little short visual novel game. Ending got me pretty good, didn't expect it.
Sweetest Monster was probably one of my favourite narrative experiences of all time. It was so unsettling and yet I couldn’t stop turning the digital page to see how it would all end.
This story deserves to be completely unspoiled, so I can’t say much about. However, the set up and whole theme of the story seemed quite similar to The Song of Saya. Let me tell you, this story disturbed me so much more than Saya. Robin, the protagonist, has no psychiatric conditions (other than depression, maybe) and no delusions. He has a family. The stakes are high and there are no excuses. Where Saya goes for shock value with the visuals, Sweetest Monster is upsetting to the core through the writing and the relationships between the characters. There is no happy ending.
On top of the fantastic writing, the art is great! It’s got an anime-ish aesthetic, but everything’s a little desaturated and uncanny. I have read the sequel, Sweetest Monster Refrain, which is not on Steam. The art there is even better! (by the same artist)
I recommend this visual novel to all that can stomach it. If you think you might be sensitive/triggered by dark themes, I’d encourage you to look at the content warnings before you buy it. If you have a strong stomach and heart when reading fiction, don’t spoil yourself as it’s best going in blind. Just go for it! You won’t regret it (at least in terms of writing and art quality… I can’t tell if you’ll regret upsetting yourself lmao)
